Being an artist and creator is a funny thing. When I did this drawing a few months ago, I thought it was awesome. Big bold text and the letters fit together pretty well...but now, several months later, I see sooo many imperfections and just want to fix things about it. This is honestly a real lesson in confidence and the exact reason why I haven't posted in months. I do a drawing and then proceed to spend too much time online comparing my artwork to other artists. By the time I want to post it, I feel like it's not good enough and no one will like it or even care. What I really should be thinking is that THIS IS ALL FOR FUN. I don't make my full income doing lettering, and no one pays me for 99% of what I post. I just do it for the joy of sharing pretty things with the rest of the world. Sorry for a long caption, but I'm really just trying to remind myself to draw and share for my wonderful friends and family on IG. Hey look! This year I’ve been trying to keep up with a bullet journal / calendar and it’s a LOT of work, but so much fun! This is my lettering for the month of October. I also do a page for each week, so someday I’ll also have to share what those look like too. It’s just so satisfying to look back on! Also, drawing fall things is my favorite. Pumpkins always turn out so cute and plump with lettering! P.S. I’m working with the University of Utah’s Lifelong Learning program to plan a workshop on lettering for bullet journaling and I’m sooooo excited! Holy moly friends. I am feeling so many warm and fuzzies and encouragement after all the comments and love on my "confidence" drawing. It's so wonderful to get so much positive feedback after being in my head for so long. You all are SO wonderful, and I feel so grateful that there are so many amazing people in my life to help keep me on the positivity train. Super excited to share one of my favorite signs I’ve ever got to make! This little guy is one of a big group of food menu signs made for @hopkinsbrewingco! They’re working with the amazing @saltlakeletteringclub to hand letter all of their beer and food signs! This has been such a fun project to be part of and this restaurant is literally one of my favs in sugarhouse. I was especially excited to get to do the sign for my absolute favorite thing on their menu, buffalo cauliflower! GUYS. This is literally the best buffalo cauliflower around. Seriously, go try it! Three weeks ago, i became an aunt for the very first time! My little nephew Gannett was born at a whopping 4lbs. 13oz. He may be tiny, but he’s a healthy and adorable little guy! 👋 Hello friends! I’ve been taking some time off from posting to Instagram for the past couple months and it’s been a nice break! I honestly haven’t had much mental space to take the time to photograph and share things. The reason I haven’t had much mental capacity to keep up with Instagram is partly because I’ve been in the midst of transitioning to a new job! It feels surreal, but I had my last day at Pluralsight on Friday, and start my new job as a product designer working with my buddy @nov.august in a week and a half! It was an incredibly difficult decision to leave Pluralsight and all its wonderful people, but the perks of the new job are amazing. I’m going to be working fully remote with the Danes (@theadventuredanes) as my coworkers. I’ve also got a ski pass and flight benefits, so I’ve got big plans to eventually take advantage of all of that! As for the next month or so, I’m just going to be enjoying some more quiet time and try to slow down a bit! I’m finally getting around to sharing this sign I made for @hopkinsbrewingco a few weeks back! The wonderful @saltlakeletteringclub has been working with Hopkins Brewery to make a bunch of amazing signs for all of the beers they’re brewing! Thanks to a little collaboration between @saltlakeletteringclub and @hopkinsbrewingco I was able to create this little sign for one of their new beers! It’s so fun to see my work up and visible in real life, and I’ve really enjoyed making signs lately. It’s been a whole week since I’ve posted anything here and it’s not even because I don’t have anything to share. I’ve been feeling a little bit of comparison overload lately. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Instagram and how I’m sharing my lettering. I find myself getting a little frustrated that my account really hasn’t grown in the past year or so, and I’ve been conflicted about whether I really should care or not! Part of me knows I really shouldn’t be bothered by it because it’s really not my full focus, but the other part really wants to see it grow! I put a lot of work into all these drawings and Instagram really is a place where we creatives go to find validation for the things we create. It’s kind of crazy to think about it as putting myself out there, almost “asking” for likes, but that’s kind of what we’re doing right? Anyone else feel this way? More fun with this @sakuraofamerica paint pens! I tried to blend the metallic with the flat color and it produced and interesting result in some direct light. Turns out the metallic doesn't really mix with the flat. Luckily, it's hard to tell in this photos. Also... blocky serifs are my new favorite.
