i can't even decide if i like the aesthetic of the last dinner party separate from the music (which is fine. there are lots of good hooks. the bridge of "nothing matters" is probably the best moment on that whole album. those twenty seconds are awesome. that probably sounds backhanded but i mean that). the fun campy gothicness just kind of feels shallow when it's paired with a lot of really on-the-nose hyper-trendy elements. like wowww you listen to red scare that's crazy. you're talking about the male gaze and shit but i'm not getting how you *feel,* yaknow. i feel like you're just like. stating these things. and they're not intense enough that you can just be blunt and deadpan about it and get the feeling across. i think the reason this kind of gets under my skin is that i like over-dramatic femininity and maximalism and the gothic. i like all those things quite a lot. but i think a lot of trendy things which incorporate those motifs kind of just do it in a way which feels very surface-level, i guess? not saying i really know how to make it work better, not saying i could do better myself, not saying everything has to be For Me. and i do not think this popular social media band is For Me despite how much it wants to appeal to my demographic. despite its aspirations to queer "female gaze" femininity and feminine rage and sexuality it all feels so clean. sparkly. marketable. and that's not how those things feel To Me. which. again. that's a Me Issue. Maybe this is like. the taste equivalent of the uncanny valley. something is coming close to scratching an itch but not actually scratching it. like the first verse of "portrait of a dead girl" is *almost* salcore (in a very different way than i think the songwriter intended) but it falls apart because it doesn't feel like its committing to the bit. like your appeal to something archaic by describing your feeling as "like one of those portraits / Of women protected by a beast on a chain / They look so safe / A guard dog built just for her" but i think making this a simile kind of undercuts it (as well as the use of "they" and "her." there's not enough here to make depersonalization a theme so the third person pronouns don't really work for me). it just distances the listener from the emotion. you want me to live in this glam goth world you've constructed for the album yet you're too scared to really get weird with it. i think i just have to make these things myself but i'm not good at poetry or writing music. i'm not even very good at just bitching about art. i feel so incoherent. can't i just "not like something" and move the fuck on. Abigail Morris' very slight femmestache and unshaven pits are cunty as fuck though. that's awesome. she's so pretty i need to steal her skin or kill myself in front of her or something
