My Top 5 Anticipated Anime Spring 2017
After a pretty dismal season for new anime, with only the good Tanya the Evil and the great Classicaloid for me to really look forward to each week, it seems like we’re finally getting underway with the good stuff for next season. And it’s here where we first get our really big name sequels, coming straight out of the gate on the 1st of April . But I’m always up for something new, and we have some interesting original stuff and new manga adaptations coming out as well.
I’ve frankly not been looking forward to a season since…well, I started watching current stuff. A year ago. Let’s just get on with the list.
5) Alice & Zouroku
Between things like new DanMachi, and new Berserk and next-gen Naruto, as well as new series such as Clockwork Planet and Armed Girl’s Machiavellianism, this appears to be a very action heavy season. Which is all well and good, but I do like something each season that is slightly away from the norm. Thankfully this caught my eye; it appears to be a nice, quiet series about a little girl with reality-warping powers who escaped from a test lab and is now living with a grouchy old man.
I know that might not seem like the nicest of synopses but frankly that is exactly my jam; supernatural mystery, character drama and a lot of opportunity for really cute and really heartwarming scenes; think something along the lines of Gunslinger Girl or Rozen Maiden. It looks really pretty as well, although I swear the art style is exactly the same as the one used for the Alien 9 OVA. I mean yeah, the studio is the same, but the mangakas and the stories in general seem completely different.
Ah well, it looks cute nonetheless. I don’t know enough about the original story or any of the other pedigree to be more excited for this, but on premise alone, this looks like a nice breath of fresh air at the very least.
4) Anonymous Noise
One thing I’ve never really watched in my few years of anime is a proper music show, which frankly I think is a major bad on my part. I’m not talking about things like K-On or Love Live, but I mean proper music shows like Kids on the Slope, Your Lie in April or Sound of the Sky (all of which have gone on my list very quickly). This will be my first one, although there are romance and high-school elements mixed in.
Normally I wouldn’t have given it a second glance, but the PV and the art style caught my attention. This looks nothing like Alice & Zouroku; it’s pure teenage emotion, screaming into the microphone; really raw, powerful looking stuff. The show itself is by Brain’s Base (who were behind Baccano!) but the art style is like something completely out of Clamp; harsh angles and lanky character designs which I actually sorta love. Again, I don’t know how good the people working on this are, but certainly for the series compositor I’ve heard great things about Arakawa Under the Bridge, Flying Witch and Noragami, so I’m cautiously optimistic. As slice of life romances go, it should be a darn sight better than Orange turned out to be.
3) Re:Creators
Now this is something I’ve been looking forward to since it was announced. From the striking poster to the fact that the creator of Black Lagoon is heavily involved, I thought it sounded absolutely awesome. There’s one problem at the moment…
…I have absolutely no idea what it’s about. I’m serious, this is the synopsis:
“Humans have created many stories. Joy, sadness, anger, deep emotion. Stories shake our emotions, and fascinate us. However, these are only the thoughts of bystanders. But what if the characters in the story have "intentions"? To them, are we god-like existences for bringing their story into the world? Our world is changed. Mete out punishment upon the realm of the gods. In Re:CREATORS, everyone becomes a Hand Shaker…I mean, Creator.”
See what I mean? Okay in all honesty, the creators look competent, the animation is by Troyca who made Aldnoah.Zero look far better than it deserved, and from what I can glean from the PV it looks like a really interesting premise; basically a battle royale between all sorts of different genres, from mecha and high fantasy to neo-samurai, magical girl and sci-fi dystopia. Even if it is bad or trashy, it should still be immensely entertaining, but given what an utter travesty Hand Shakers has been, I’m just the tiniest bit wary.
2) Attack on Titan: Season 2
It’s been four years…but we’re so close to seeing it again.
If Sword Art Online was the show that properly introduced the ‘blockbuster anime’ we see every year, then Attack on Titan was the show that cemented it. If you’re any kind of an anime fan you’ve almost certainly watched it, and love it or hate it, it’s certainly been immensely influential to the fandom. I’m in the former category; the original series had its flaws in characterization and the general blockbustery traits that plague most modern media (see one of my other rants) but it was a phenomenally thrilling ride from start to finish and the story’s only just getting started. I’ve thankfully managed to avoid most of the story spoilers up to this point so I’m thoroughly looking forward to where the show’s going to go from here.
But as much as I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time, it’s not my number one.
1) My Hero Academia: Season 2
My Hero Academia may not have been the most popular show last Spring, and it was largely overshadowed by shows such as Re:Zero, but honestly it was a fantastic introduction to a unique world with colourful characters and a lot of room for development. It remains one of the few shounen shows I really enjoy (in fact I think only Seven Deadly Sins surpasses it), and with the introduction out of the way, it’s time to get stuck in with some proper plot. More specifically, a tournament arc!
‘waves hand excitedly’
Like with AoT, I haven’t been following the manga, but the more I’ve heard of this story in general, the more I like the sound of it. It is the MCU to Attack on Titan’s X-Men; it may not have the depth or seinen factor which I absolutely love when done right, but there is absolutely no argument to be made against pure, unadulterated fun when it’s done as amazingly right as this is. It’s an incredibly tough call, but my most anticipated anime of the coming season has to be My Hero Academia Season 2.
Let’s just hope that I’ll actually be able to WATCH my most anticipated this time.
‘sends accusatory glares at Netflix, who is still withholding Little Witch Academia’
Other Potentially Interesting Shows
Berserk (2017) – Due to the fact that it’s a strong season and the fact that the 2016 version was merely ‘okay’, I won’t be following this live, although I will check it out again at a later point.
Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho – High fantasy by White Fox. If you liked Re:Zero, you’ll probably like this. Frankly I’ve had enough high fantasy for the moment after Chain Chronicle
Clockwork Planet – I was so tempted; I love clockwork/steampunk scifi stuff, but with everything else and the fact that the plot was a bit too vague, I’m giving it a miss. Hand Shakers has really shaken my risk-taking ability.
Love Tyrant, The Very Lovely Tyrant of Love – Angels have Kiss Notes which cause people to fall in love. One such angel messes up and a guy will end up dying if he doesn’t kiss someone. Looks utterly insane.
Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 6 – Apparently a really popular show. I should probably watch this at some point.
Sakurada Reset – An interesting idea about a town full of people with supernatural powers, including resetting the world. Seems like Charlotte in premise which honestly is a good thing; lots of room for character growth and drama, as well as David Production (from Jojo) doing the series. My worry is the backlog; looking into the creators, they’ve done things such as .hack…and Future Diary…and Aldnoah.Zero…and…Boku no Pico OVAs…yeah, uh, nope.
The Eccentric Family Season 2 – A show about the lives of a family of tanuki living in the suburbs which was supposedly really good, and another one which I haven’t seen.
SukaSuka, What are you doing at the end? Are you busy? Can you save me? – ‘Leprechauns’ fight ‘Beasts’ or something like that; I don’t know, and again, I’ve learnt my lesson after Hand Shakers.

Some Thoughts on Recently Finished Anime
A few shows haven’t quite wrapped up yet, but I just wanted to rant briefly about the ones that did.
Possible spoilers for Sakura Quest, Sakurada Reset, Saiyuki Reload Blast, Netsuzou Trap, Isekai Shokudou, Monster Hunter Stories, Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun
Sakura Quest:
I really liked the ending. Ended up kind of bittersweet, but less of a blow than I thought it could have been. I found the show, overall, to be pretty hit or miss. But when it hit, it really hit. It could actually come off as painfully relateable a lot of the time. I don’t always care for series that are too grounded in reality and hit so close to home, but it certainly does give me a lot of sympathy for the various characters and what they’re going through. Sanae and Ririko’s arcs in particular had this effect on me. The issue being, other times the show was actually kind of boring. There were a few episodes where I was just zoning out so much that I was just letting it play in the background and reading something else on another tab. While I think there are many shows where 13 episodes is just too little, and they need a second cour, I actually wonder if Sakura Quest would have benefited from being a 1-cour series. But on the other hand, then it might have felt too rushed and pointless. I did like how we got to explore all the characters, besides just the main girls. Erika’s arc was actually one of my favorites, and I liked how even characters like the bus driver got some importance.
Since the show is considered a spiritual successor to Shirobako, I kind of feel obliged to compare the two. Shirobako was definitely better, and more consistently engaging. Of course, I think that has a lot to do with Shirobako’s subject matter, which was producing anime. For people who are really into anime, it’s fascinating. Where Sakura Quest had a much more niche focus on the tourism industry. And also fell a lot more into slice-of-life. Nonetheless, I did find Sakura Quest pretty interesting
Sakurada Reset
Oh boy. This show. There were actually times I was calling it Glasslip 2.0 or a slightly-improved Charlotte, neither of which is a complement. But honestly, it’s much better than either Glasslip or Charlotte. It just has a lot of issues. I think I was drawn to this show at first because it was just so mysterious. I’m really a sucker for shows with that kind of atmosphere. I thought it might even be a full-on mystery solving anime. Part of the problem is, I’m not even sure if the show itself knew what it wanted to be. It did have some mystery solving aspects to it. It was also a story about super-powered people (and the actual dangers of it). It was a romance story. I also think they wanted to make Kei the type of character like Lelouch or Light who is super talented and smart and can resolve any complicated situation. And... it was just plain senseless at times. Don’t even ask me what was going on all the time. But, I liked Souma, and I liked that in the end, she kinda, sorta won (except not really). Even the ending was trippy. But oh well. I mostly finished this because I like to complete things. I don’t entirely regret watching this. I enjoyed the romantic bits and there were some cool twists in the second half, even though some of them were resolved way too fast (like when Haruki got reset back to before she met Kei, complete with her hair growing long again. That was a real curveball that I thought was going to be a much bigger issue than it was. But it did get me excited for the next episode)
Saiyuki Reload Blast
I watched this on a whim because I’m a huge Toshihiko Seki fan, and I’ve never touched the Saiyuki franchise prior. I was surprised to find that I was enjoying it a lot. Especially the past-life arc. I love reincarnation plots, and it was really fascinating. Also made me start shipping Goku x Sanzo like burning. So I ended up actually marathoning all of the previous seasons of Saiyuki (except the movie because I could only find it dubbed, though I didn’t look too hard). I actually had no trouble following the plot despite jumping in during the fourth season, but it was nice to see what happened before (despite that there was a ton of filler in the older seasons, from what I’ve read). And ultimately the plot still hasn’t gotten anywhere in over 100 episodes. I’m not sure it’s ever going to get anywhere. XD Although at least it’s made progress, having Nataku kind of remember Goku again in the last episode. And Dokugakuji’s dead. That was plain cruel. Actually, I wish we got to see the rest of the Kougaiji party in Blast. Despite that she seems to be an unpopular character, I actually really loved Lirin. She was super cute. But she only is shown for a split second in this season in a memory. Oh well. Also, Sharak Sanzo is incredibly cool, and I’m glad she didn’t die. I was kind of expecting it because she was so cool.
Netsuzou Trap
I expected this show to be super trashy and bad, so I was actually pleasantly surprised with it. I mean, I like watching trashy bad stuff sometimes for kicks, which is why I picked it up. But I actually found the plot pretty unique and the characters interesting. The episodes were short, but the pacing felt just right. And the payoff in the last episode was just plain sweet. I feel a bit bad for Takeda, though. He was a legitimately sweet guy. But at least he still seems to be on friendly terms with Yuma.
Isekai Shokudou
I like food-porn shows, but this one turned out kind of disappointing to me. In the beginning, it grabbed me, with the inventive concept. But I feel like it could have done more to not become so repetitive. It was just a different person coming to the restaurant each episode and being impressed by the amazing food that exists in the human world. Kind of nice how they would explain about the lives and cultures of the otherworldly beings, but it also made the show feel something like a documentary at times. It wasn’t a horrible show by any means, just a lackluster one that could have done a better job with the great premise it had.
Monster Hunter Stories
I’m counting this because while the show is going to continue for who knows how long, it did wrap up its first “season“. I know this show was listed as 48 episodes from the start, until it was renewed. Oddly, it isn’t even having a season two. Just outright continuing right where it left off, with the finale of the last episode starting off the second arc. I really did enjoy the first show, and in a way I think they should have ended it. I do think they can do some neat things from where they left off, having a team of Riders now, including Cheval. Although I’m not sure why I should care about Nariki, and I’m hoping Ayuria doesn’t stay stuck in the role of damsel in distress for too long. She was one of my favorites in the first season. I see they have a more traditional team of villains now. I’m already calling the blonde guy switching sides, because he looks all angsty in the OP and he’s in such a prominent spot in the new key visual. Well, I’ll have to wait and see.
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun
This was definitely one of my highlights for the season. Being largely slice-of-life, the finale wasn’t so much a finale, but still a good episode. I’ve never been too big a sports anime fan. I picked this one up for Michiko Neya. But fortunately, it’s not really a sports anime. It’s just a comedy anime centered around the members of a soccer team (and their classmates). All of the characters were actually pretty great, and overall, the most memorable episode to me is going to be the manga one, which was just plain brilliant. I do wonder if it’s commentary on the writers part about the annoyance of executive meddling and trying to please the fanbase. But it was funny.
Since I mentioned picking it up for Michiko Neya (who is tragically under-cast these days) Miwa was a fantastic character who was cute and awesome and fun to watch. I still love that she’s actually an otaku. But Moka gives her a run for her money in being best girl, because she’s a stalker with a spiked baseball bat.
I’m super open for this to get a season 2. I’m not sure how popular it was, but it was too much fun.

Sakurada Reset Review
So, I thought about giving a review once I finish seasonal animes, and since I dropped this one (a few weeks ago already in fact) I’ll give a quick review I guess. Not like I have much to say anyway. Potential spoilers regarding the very first episodes.
Synopsis: In the little town of Sakurada, that some asshats write “Sagrada” for some reason, about half of the inhabitants have special powers, be it telepathy, communicating with cats or cancelling stuff. The MC, Kei Asai, has the power to remember everything. He is paired up by some classmate with Misora Haruki, a girl who has the power to reset time to a precedent “save”, but can’t remember herself she has resetted once she did. Together, they will help solve mysteries in Sakurada.
What I thought : The premise sounded kinda cool, especially regarding the actual nature of the powers. Screw pyrokinesy, super-strength and normal stuff, here we can go into reflections (but not out), live off informations like it’s food and stuff like that. And actually, the two first episodes felt kinda sorta promising, but the most interesting character ended up dying. Then it turned pretty dark for a moment, then just... ultra dull. And so many things simply didn’t work. Kei has the emotional capacity of an oyster basically, and Haruki simply hasn’t heard of that concept. So far it’s fine by me, but they *both* have a deep understanding of their client’s feelings and personas, which they shouldn’t be able to do... Plus, it makes a vast collection of cringy attempts to be meta and self-referencing (the McGuffin, Oka Eri doing her best to be the villain and actually stating it multiple times per episode). And it felt like it had no direction whatsoever, most dialogues are pretty empty and feel like they’re just there because they decided to stretch the action of one episode over three of them. Visually, it had quite a few pretty scenes, but it is wasted by horrible CGI at points (especially for the buildings ; they feel even more soulless than the MCs), and I can’t remember much about the music, but it sounded quite fine.
Why I dropped it : You will see some pretty horrible stuff pop in the few days (well, Clockwork Planet’s last episode should be out by now), yet I haven’t dropped them, even though they are way worse than Sakurada Reset, wo why did I drop it? Well, it’s basically because it was so empty and boring. Nothing happened anymore. I couldn’t find new things to say about it when I was watching it. And I have seen scenarios that were pretty much all over the place, but this one just felt like it was actively trying not to go anywhere... I would give this one a 5/10 so far, as it it just awfully, terribly average in some respects ; I mean, I haven’t done this sooner because I kept forgetting about it. It do it now because I remember about doing reviews because of Clockwork Planet. That’s how average and forgettable Sakurada Reset was to me. However, if I hear it gets better later on, I would probably try again.
So, that was my first anime review ever. The following ones should be more complete though, since, well, I have dropped this one, thus I don’t have a lot to say, except that it’s boring. Tell me what you thought about it, or if you think something is missing in my review (but maybe wait for the next review for that, since it will be more representative of what a full-on review is). Also don’t freak out, I will say a lot of horrible things about the next one, Clockwork Planet. It’s just a coincidence, I pretty much loved every other anime I’ve seen this season, buuut it just so happens that those two would follow each other in my reviewing queue.
Also, “meh” means “great” in Middle Persian.

Let’s talk about a very particular anime of this season. Why particular? Because I’m actually understanding 40% of it, if I’m lucky. First episodes were quite… average I guess? The premise was interesting though, but after making me so confused, I was disappointed… in my brain, that is.
Tumblr media
So I decided to just FEEL it, giving up understanding it fully. By the why, by FEEL I mean to try to get the message it wanted to convey, like you did with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (now, don’t tell me you actually fully understood how to fucking PIERCE THE HEAVENS WITH A DRILL, don’t worry, I don’t think this counts as spoiler, just a great quote).
Ok, onto the episode.
After last, quite traumatic, week, we returned to the episodic cases, in which our MC duo use their combination to resolve them. Okay.
Tumblr media
Uhhhh, no wait. Let me say that I dislike episodic shows first, reason being, it seems like there is no story at all… unless they are some big and interesting series, I rarely enjoy them. Mostly because I dislike seeing characters introduced in one episode, to just never see them again.
With that being said, onto episode 5, though I don’t really have much to say. but that I liked it more than the first three, as it was definitely easier to follow (yep, I’m baka/idiot).
Tumblr media
This time, we have a girl trapped in a marble, because she used her own ability unconsciously… I suppose it happens, huh.,
The twist is: our marbl- naaaaaaaah. I don’t really want to report what happened in the episode. Heck, why would anyone wish to read a synopsis?
Random pic I find fitting for this part. By the way, From Haruhi (I think).
(…wait, you really want a little synopsis? Uh…)
Click here if you’re really have so much time to kill and wish to read an half assed synopsis of this episode, I warned you
You really clicked? Dude, you have too much free time.
So, Marble girl has a twisted fix about pure object, thus she follows the rules while also enforcing them to others, gaining the nickname “student monitor”. When she broke one herself though (she was late during first day) she unconsciously used her power, that’s it. Kei is now trying to understand how to solve the problem at the root
Let’s focus on how I felt while watching it (pffff, as if there were more people interested in that), I can only say that I liked a bit the ending (compared to the whole episode), when the girl whose name I don’t remember at all, finally (probably?) was freed from her chains thanks to MC.
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way she cried, made me feel a little moved, but that’s all. In my opinion this episode wasn’t really good or bad, it was “Fine”, thus a 6. I hope to get surprised like last episode again soon…
Something needs to be done about it soon.
Regarding Sakurada Reset (Sagrada Reset) Episode 5, In a Half Assed Way [Experimenting with HTML] Let's talk about a very particular anime of this season. Why particular? Because I'm actually understanding 40% of it, if I'm lucky.
