As Thanatos' child, Mel is inherently cursed and has suffered great amounts of abuse and lack of affection throughout her younger years.

There was a turning point in high school - a great event that I won't get into at the moment that changed Mel's mind about life and well - everything. She vowed to LOVE so openly, so wholly.

And it's an infection of sorts, she brings it to all her relationships - even the people she kind of dislikes. While Mel should symbolize death - as her own person, she brings a open arms kind-of love that is so warm and open, most people fall prey to it.
