THE PERSONA 5 FANDOM SLEEPS ON THEIR POTENTIAL RELATIONSHIP AS A WHOLE BY JUST SAYING THEY BOTH HATE EACH OTHER

I don’t look at Ryugoro and think of it as an enemies to lovers ship. I look at it as a slow-burn friends to possibly lovers ship (Honestly if they were just shown to be FRIENDS I’d be happy because I like their potential dynamic).Because listen. Despite what the fandom may make one believe, Goro never openly says or hints that he dislikes Ryuji. It’s entirely one-sided on Ryuji’s side and even then, it’s a shallow dislike because all Ryuji has to go off of for not liking Goro is that Goro comes off as vain, spoiled, and an asshole for taking a stance against the Phantom Thieves. Aka, “You don’t like me and my friends? I don’t like you.”

BUT,

please notice the shift Ryuji makes after the engine room fight? Ryuji is the first person to reassure Goro that he is special, the first and only one to bang on the bunker door when Goro sacrifices himself. He’s also the one that excitedly starts offering to teach Goro the ropes on being a phantom thief at the beginning of Sae’s palace, ie: explaining why they use codenames, how they steal hearts, etc.

AND HONESTLY, Ryuji turning his thinking on Goro around after that fight? After Goro mentions his home life, his grades, his public image? Especially that bit with Goro’s mother dying, him being an unwanted bastard child, and Goro’s asshole father? If you think about it from Ryuji’s point of view with his own home life, I can see why Ryuji would suddenly start thinking differing of Goro in that moment (Can i also mention that Ryuji wasn’t there when Goro overshared about his mother dying in Leblanc, and would have no idea of knowing about it until the engine room fight anyway?)

I like writing the two of them as bonding over their shared complexes, Both wanting a place to belong, both being hurt by their fathers and loving their mothers, Ryuji sharing his mom with Goro and essentially getting him adopted into his family, Goro being comforted by Ryuji’s unbounded kindness but when Goro recovers from his own issues he can see the bigger picture and realize Ryuji acts purely in others’ interests, Goro teaching Ryuji it’s okay to be selfish and Ryuji has all the right in the world to be upset for himself, to be angry and to not bottle up all those repressed feelings he’s had since Kamoshida broke his leg. To actually tell Morgana or any of the other PT how he feels and how degrading the way they might speak to him is. They both tackle similar problems in different ways and they’re so similar and could work so well together, and it’s such a shame that their potential friendship is summed up as “They hate each other”.

So TLDR; Ryuji and Goro have a really good potential dynamic for friendship and for romance and a big chunk of the fandom ignores it or doesn’t bother to delve into it, seeing it as a shallow hate-hate relationship.

@sakaamotos Fair. We can't hide him forever, but I suppose that's drama being saved for another time. It does feel weird, considering his new fireteam were supposed to be the two Guardians who were with Mithrax before. They'd probably want to be there if they could, but if they're too far away, that makes sense too.

I guess the whole cutscene seemed silly to me. Like, why didn't saint put up a bubble or wall to protect the Eliksni? Why did the vex have the most extreme case of storm trooper syndrome I've seen in a while? Ikora just. Keeping her back turned to a field of vex to nod at saint and mithrax. It was also a very manageable amount of vex, if either mithrax or saint has primary ammo. How did no one spot Osiris standing in a very blatant spot? All the pauses just to talk to each other in the open...

This is way more musing than you probably anticipated or wanted, but the more I think about the cutscene the more it bugs me lol

Also, WHERE THE FUCK WAS SHAXX?? Crow??? Hawthorne?? The people who would normally be THERE are just missing. I guess the excuse is that some people have to be elsewhere in order to protect human citizens as well, but I wanted to see everyone in action, I suppose.

From what I researched the fountain pen and the pencil case gives out 2 music notes but I think if you have a Justice persona with you it will make it 3 notes, I think I may be wrong with that tho. Ryuji is the best of the “main” phantom thieves. He’s the only one that didn’t really need a moment of “Oh. I should stop letting people trample on me.” You know? He didn’t need a wake up, or a speech on sticking it to the adults, he did it on his own. The moment his leg broke and Kamoshida started kicking him while he was down, Ryuji fought. He never regressed, he kept fighting Kamoshida whenever he could, spitting in his face and immediately jumping to action to help the cognitions in that palace. He immediately sprang to action while all the other PT had to be encouraged to leave their situations, and that’s nothing against them, but it is a point of strength for Ryuji. He’s the one Phantom Thief who had the rebellious spirit in him from the beginning. If it weren’t for the progression where they had to make Akira get a persona first, I honestly would have said Ryuji should have gotten a persona before Akira.

But then to further it? He’s just so caring? He takes so much shit from everybody around him about how he’s unattractive, how no girl could ever like him, how nobody at Shujin wants him around and sees him as a delinquent punk, and he isn’t even safe with the PT either, he gets berated by Morgana, Ann, and Futaba several times, sometimes even Akira if you choose the dialogue options for it. And honestly, how he continues to be so kind to a fault that he becomes a doormat? It kind of hurts. He cares for people that don’t always care for him, and that kind of selfless devotion is what makes him the best phantom thief, not even the best of just the main 8, even if Goro, my favorite is in that running, Ryuji is my favorite character in the sense that he’s the best person. He’s the best of the thieves for his rebellious spirit, he’s the best person for how he cares for absolute strangers he doesn’t know and people who berate him endlessly and hurt him without even a single care for he himself. It’s a large reason behind why I ship Ryugoro because Goro needs that kindness. Ryuji being the guy he is would share that kindness with even people that punch and hurt him and I think Goro really needs it, while Ryuji needs to take a selfishness lesson and learn to stand up for himself, to still be kind but to know when too much is enough and when to withdraw so he isn’t hurt while showing that care.
