🛌
Gilgamesh was morethan human, but he was no god. He needed his sleep. No matter how hard hefought, he would have to rest eventually. They told him as much, though hedenied it.
He slept now. He rolled and whined and curled in on himself, but he did not wake, even when they’d screamed and ripped their sheets andcursed the harlot, the hunter, and the gods. (And then Shamhash had come andreminded them. They’d tripped over themselves, spilling blessings from theirlips with a desperation they thought they’d lost.)
Now, exhausted from little more than emotions, they rolledtheir head to look at him. Their King. Their friend. Their wielder. They couldfeel it. They had a few more hours left. No amount of Gilgamesh’s treasure ortheir determination could change that. To think they’d almost spent thoseprecious moments consumed with rage.
They leveraged what little magic they had left, and dragged themselfto their friend’s side, clumps of clay (a finger, a patch of skin) crumblinginto the covers as they went.
“Gil.” Their voice was hoarse from tears shed. He wasshaking again. Perhaps a nightmare. A dream of things to come. They’d neverseen him tremble like this before- not even when they’d told him they weredying. He only let his feelings show in dreams. They pressed their head to hisshoulder, and closed their eyes, saving what little energy they could for whenhe woke. One last goodbye. A clean cut. The conclusion to their connection.
Would that he’d accept it as they (finally) had.
