“Saint Peter's Dome, Columbia Gorge, Oregon.” . ©2021 Gary L. Quay Rain is back in the Columbia Gorge a little early this year. It did not make it to Hood River, but I got rained on at Cascade Locks. The West could use a good soaking this year. On the left is Saint Peter's Dome. It's a rock pinacle revealed by the Missoula Floods thousands of years ago. Just A Mere Peephole

     Piranesi designed the piazza on Rome’s Aventine Hill not only with the view of Saint Peter’s Dome in mind, but he wanted to create an experience as well.  When looking through the keyhole on the gate, Saint Peter’s Dome is framed perfectly between the shrubs.

     Saying this, the view would have been just as beautiful through a large picture window, but this is framed for the experience. There is a special quality that comes with crouching down and looking through the keyhole of a large solid gate. A gate that was placed to obstruct a view and path. You are “spying” past the guarded walls.

     Yann Martel once said, “Life is a peephole, a single tiny entry onto a vastness—how can I not dwell on this belief, cramped view of things? This peephole is all I’ve got!”

     Our lives are a mere peephole compared to the rest of the universe; many have come before us and will continue after. For us however, this tiny peephole of a life is all we have. Cramped and congested with the stress each day brings, we still have to love the minuscule existence we each have.

      This peephole does just that. The world offers us the larger picture, but if you remove the clutter, you have a small yet meaningful experience that will forever be etched in your brain.
