N.F.L.’s Rapid Embrace of Gambling Creates Mixed Signals - The New York Times
"Since the Supreme Court struck down, in 2018, a federal law that effectively banned sports betting outside Nevada — a prohibition once backed by the N.F.L.’s commissioner, Roger Goodell — the N.F.L. has embraced the gambling industry. It has forged partnerships reportedly worth nearly $1 billion over five years with sports betting companies, and permitted a sports book to operate inside one of its stadiums. Now it even has a team in Las Vegas, which the league shunned for decades because any affiliation was seen as a threat to the integrity of the game.
Yet the embedding of sports gambling so quickly into the culture of the league has resulted in jarring contradictions. The N.F.L. is pushing to popularize and benefit from sports betting while still guarding against the potential pitfalls that it long condemned. While the league donates money to promote responsible gambling, its broadcasts are peppered with advertisements for sports betting companies. The N.F.L. is part of a growing apparatus that encourages casual fans to regularly place wagers on games, while punishing league employees — most notably players — who might do the same...."

Rtc, but it’s a classic painting part 1/?
Noel
Monique would’ve been all beaten up, but Noel is the one to receive the damage…
This is inspired by a St. Sebastián painting, who was ordered to be killed by arrows for converting his fellow Roman soldiers to Christianity. Also, As a protector from the bubonic plague, Sebastian was formerly one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. In Catholicism, Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, pin-makers, athletes (a modern association) and of a holy death.(Wikipedia lmao)
I chose him as Noel because he was also said to have cured a woman of her muteness, and, y know, Noel is practically mute about himself if he isn’t Monique. Furthermore, “the most romantic boy in town”, struck by cupid.

For the first time in many years, Monique Toutant thinks she might be able to buy herself some better groceries and some new clothes.
As a longtime social assistance recipient, the 62-year-old Quebec City resident is used to pinching pennies, buying the strict minimum at the grocery store and saving for months for every purchase. She calls it "everyday stress." [...]
Toutant, who can't work because of acute rheumatoid arthritis that prevents her from sitting or standing for long periods, is facing a little less hardship after her monthly cheque rose to $1,548 — an increase of more than $300 — at the beginning of January with the launch of the Quebec government's basic income program.
The program, aimed at 84,000 Quebecers with a "severely limited capacity for employment" such as a chronic illness or mental health condition, will provide an increase of more than 28 per cent for a single person, the government says. Just as importantly, they will also have the ability to earn about $14,500 a year in wages — up from $2,400 a year — and have up to $20,000 in savings, all without losing benefits. They will also be able to live with a partner who earns a small paycheque without seeing their benefits clawed back.
Strict eligibility criteria
Anti-poverty activists are praising the program as a good step toward helping people meet their basic needs — but say strict eligibility criteria exclude many of the province's lowest-income residents.
Jean Lalande, a spokesperson for a welfare rights committee in Montreal's Pointe-Saint-Charles, said the program addresses some of the problems with traditional welfare, which discourages people from taking steps to improve their situations by cutting benefits as soon as someone tries to get a job or save money.
However, he believes it should be offered to all of those on social assistance, including those earning the minimum welfare amount of $770 per month — who sometimes spend 80 or 90 per cent of their income on rent. [...]

HoB - dying to hear your thoughts on KP’s latest purchased puff piece in People Magazine. Apparently it’s The King who is ‘limited’ while Willy has picked up all these extra responsibilities and wouldn’t you just know it, Saint Cathy isn’t fully cleared to work yet?
Apparently her and her doctors are ready for glam event appearances. Regular public-facing duties not so much. How much longer are the media going to run interference for the fact that she’s basically quit?
Also- it’s disgusting how gleefully they’re looking forward to the King’s death for the “biggest job of their lives” when they can’t even do their little job.
It really is a case of:
This has to be the most anodyne & ridiculous EXCLUSIVE! article.
As she closes the year with her heartwarming Christmas carol service, Kate Middleton is looking ahead and navigating a new reality. The Dec. 6 service, attended by her husband Prince William, 42, and three children — Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 — was her fourth since 2020. But this year’s event at Westminster Abbey carried added poignancy. It marked her biggest public outing since completing chemotherapy in September after a grueling year defined by health struggles. “I know how hard it would be to do something like this, putting yourself out there when you may not be feeling 100 percent,” Jenny Powell, a community worker from Abergavenny, Wales, who was among the attendees, tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. Kate, 42, in a festive red Alexander McQueen coat and sporting her signature blowout, appeared her usual composed self as she and her family, holding hands, walked down the aisle in front of a crowd of 1,600 guests. But Princess Kate’s nearly yearlong journey with cancer has brought a profound change beneath the familiar exterior. In a rare and candid moment, British pop star Paloma Faith, who performed at the event, asked Kate how she was doing. “I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had,” Kate said.
Riveting EXCLUSIVE! paragraphs.
And how exactly did People magazine, which is an American publication, get that quote from Jenny from Wales? Did Monique Jessen just happen to bump into Jenny from Wales last Friday afternoon and ask Jenny her opinion on Kate's life? Or was it Simon Perry who sat next to Jenny and got her personal scoop on everything.
Jenny Powell, who helps people with disabilities in her town of Abergavenny in South Wales, tells PEOPLE, "It was like saying, ‘We do acknowledge you.' " Since the COVID pandemic, Mrs. Powell set up a group, The Gathering, to do craft-making, provide sensory spaces, offer cooking opportunities and partake in bingo. “In our group, everyone understands everyone else,” she says. At Kate's Together at Christmas concert, the royal placed a letter on each seat that summed up the theme of love and kindness. “It was a gorgeous letter,” Mrs. Powell says. “It really showed her appreciation of what we’re all doing. It was quite touching and brought tears to my eyes." She continues, "These things that I’ve been doing have impacted the lives of people I’ve been supporting, but knowing that the royal family is aware of these little things is lovely.” Mrs. Powell recalls the steel drum band playing and servers handing out mince pies at the event, as well as a “kindness tree," which was positioned near the door. There, helpers handed out red labels and pens "so you could write a note to hang on [the tree] before you went in," she says. When Princess Kate, Prince William and their three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — arrived, “They looked so happy together," Powell says. “It’s been a hard year, but she put that brave face on and she looked absolutely gorgeous," she adds of Kate, 42, who recently completed chemotherapy after her cancer diagnosis.
Well, well, well...looks like Jenny from Wales had A LOT to say to an American media outlet in an EXCLUSIVE! magazine story.
But then back to the original EXCLUSIVE!
As Kate continues her recovery, she’s confronting the looming responsibilities of her future role as Queen. Following Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022, William and Kate found themselves on the brink of the roles of King and Queen. When William’s father, King Charles, 76, revealed his own cancer diagnosis in February — treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer remains ongoing — that position came into sharper focus. Additionally, Queen Camilla, 77, was recently forced to step back from several royal engagements as she battled pneumonia, a further reminder of the family’s vulnerability. “It has been a hell of a two years for them,” Camilla’s son Tom Parker Bowles told The Daily Telegraph. “The older you get, the more conscious you become of mortality, especially with illnesses and the rest of it.” Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith adds, “Although the King is carrying out his duties with typical determination, he has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment. As a result William has been taking on more responsibilities, and he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected.” Adds an insider: “There’s a sense of calm before the storm. They are next in line for the biggest job of their lives, and of course, Kate’s health has taken priority, but it’s also allowed everyone to take a step back and figure out what’s important right now.”
"A sense of calm before the storm."
Oh, is someone expecting a big scandal or something? Charles quite obviously isn't dying anytime soon, so why even use that phrase? Is Kensington Palace expecting to shock us all with a photo of William and his beard on the Christmas card photo?
It's pretty clear that there is no actual information in this article, which is amazing because it's so obviously KP sanctioned pr.
The transition to the throne will inevitably come, though it remains a complex and carefully considered path. “It is something the institution is always mindful of,” says a close source of how plans are frequently updated. “It is an institutional preparedness.” The source adds, “Their circumstances will eventually change. Given what the future holds, it would be very sensible to build back slowly and prioritize family time.” The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children are set to spend Christmas at Sandringham with King Charles. There they’ll participate in the royal family’s celebrations and — hopefully — join in the traditional walk to and from church.
"The transition to the throne will inevitably come." "Their circumstances will eventually change."
The sun also rises tomorrow, but we don't need a magazine to tell us that, do we?
Yes, why is Kensington Palace doing a holiday EXCLUSIVE! in an American magazine right before the holidays? People magazine is essentially Publicists' Weekly. It has been for decades, which is why the writer at CDAN has always referred to it as "kneepads."
Not a very Christmasy photo for a magazine with the date of actual Christmas on the cover.
Interesting that they chose this photo and not one from the actual Christmas service that happened last Friday. The photos from that would have been unquestionably available to People's editors.
But still, why does Kensington Palace want to remind everyone--everyone in the USA--that Kate will be queen one day? The big font of KATE'S NEW REALITY could be interpreted so many different ways, but Kate should have been preparing to be queen from the moment she married William, not the holiday season of 2024.
Oh look! US Weekly is getting in the Christmas spirit with Kate on the cover too!
And with an old picture?
Again, was there something wrong with the photos from last Friday? Did Kate not look festive enough with the black bow against the bright red coat dress?
Hello! magazine in the UK also is using the same photo as US Weekly.
I find less fault of a UK magazine having Kate on the cover at Christmas time than American publications.
However, neither of the photos of Kate are current ones. Interesting. Again, some editor did not feel like using the photos from last Friday. Did the kids not walk up the stairs at the Abbey in the right way or something?
Oh, yeah, and Vanity Fair decided to repeat the People mag talking points:
“I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had,” Kate said.
That was the only thing Kate said about "her year" while she was at the her Christmas concert last Friday, yet the KP comms team has swooped into action to build a full-fledge story around it.
They even got Kate a spot on the short-list for Time magazine's Person of the Year.
The Princess of Wales made international headlines this year and stirred a conversation about privacy and health for public figures. In January, Kate Middleton was hospitalized for two weeks for a “planned abdominal surgery” and Kensington Palace said she would be out of the public eye until Easter. But after conspiracy theories circulated online in March about Middleton’s whereabouts, the royal put the rumors to rest by revealing that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In September, Middleton announced that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment. Middleton was previously on the TIME100 list of Most Influential People in 2013, and one of the runners-up for Person of the Year in 2011.
You know what's NOT mentioned in that paragraph?
The 2024 Mother's Day photo that was killed by photo agencies around the world.
A moment that revealed Kensington Palace to be an absolute dumpster fire in handling a crisis.
A moment that caused hundreds or thousands of tiktoks, videos, cartoons, think pieces, stories, comments and jokes.
Say it with me now, "Isn't that convenient?"
Because all of these magazines are part of the great whitewash campaign of 2024 and--soon to be--2025.
It's a pr campaign to prevent anyone from looking behind the curtain and realizing they're living in The Matrix when it comes to believing what is officially being said about Will & Kate and all their obvious problems. One splashy "nothing to see here, please disperse" pictorial in the magazines.
It's pretty obvious that there are problems if the Wales family can spend 30 hours filming a video of Will & Kate frolicking on a beach and in the woods together, yet can't issue a normal Christmas card photo the weekend after Kate's Christmas service. It would have been the perfect photo to go with all of these magazine spreads, but it has yet to be released.
Am I to assume that KP isn't going to release it until the kids are out of school? And why is that? Because William will be on vacation for another three and a half weeks so he can go hide from the media?
The kids started school in the fall on 04 September, and Kate's video was released on 09 September. Didn't have a problem releasing that video of Will & Kate fondling each other in the woods and on the beach when the kids were in school.
Is it that Will & Kate will need to have a special conversation with their kids after the release of the Christmas card? And that's why they have to wait to release it until the kids are out of school? Just like when Kate sat on a bench and told the world "cancer had been present" but couldn't tell her kids about it until they went on a month long break?
Interesting parallels.
How hard is it to release a Christmas card when Kensington Palace has released so much visual documentation of Will, Kate, and the kids this year already?
Asking for a friend...

All you have to do is go fast enough and long enough.
- James Garner, Grand Prix (1966)
The cult classic Grand Prix (1966) was an ambitious journey into the soul of elite motor racing, Grand Prix even on today’s viewing manages to find the heartbeat of Formula 1 deep within the majesty of roaring machinery.
Several top drivers are in competition for the 1966 Formula 1 title. Among them is American Pete Aron (James Garner) of the BRM team (and formerly with Ferrari), who is fast but prone to mistakes. At the Monaco race, Aron's refusal to give way causes a serious collision with his teammate Englishman Scott Stoddard (Brian Bedford). Stoddard, who races in the shadow of his deceased brother, is injured and misses several races, His headstrong wife Pat (Jessica Walter) is fed-up with loving a man living on the edge and leaves him while he is still in hospital. Meanwhile, Aron is fired from the BRM team for reckless driving.
The Ferrari team are BRM's closest challengers. Veteran driver and two-time champion Frenchman Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand) is still the fastest man on most days, but he is starting to lose his motivation. Sarti is stuck in a loveless, distant marriage with businesswoman Monique (Genvieve Page), and starts a relationship with American journalist Louise (Eva Marie Saint). Sarti's team mate is young Italian Nino Barlini (Antonio Sabato), who lives the fast life on and off the track.
Aron hooks up with Pat, is hired by the fledgling Yamura team financed by tycoon Izo Yamura (Toshiro Mifune), and finally finds his winning form. Stoddard returns to racing despite the pain of his injuries, and more determined than ever, goes on a winning streak. With Sarti and Barlini also picking up victories, all four men enter the final race of the season in the hunt for the coveted championship with plenty to lose on the line.
Director John Frankenheimer creates a three hour masterpiece celebrating both the men and the machines involved in the international pinnacle of motor racing. Large segments of Grand Prix consist of action from races at the legendary Monaco street circuit, the dangerously fast and incredibly scenic Spa in Belgium, Zandvoort in Holland, Clermont Ferrand in France, Silverstone in England and the final showdown at the imposing Monza in Italy, with its intimidating steeply banked corners.
Other than playing with split-screen imagery, Frankenheimer uses no tricks, and just mounts his cameras at every possible angle on the cars, capturing the pure raw speed, incredible danger, and classic beauty of racing in the mid 1960s. This was the era of rudimentary safety protocols, with drivers facing the risk of serious crashes, injury and death at every corner. The visuals are stunning, with the cars blasting at top speed past unprotected poles, trees, spectators, and structures.
Whenever the cars are running, Grand Prix is one of the best studio efforts of the '60s. The film only stalls when it's off the track, which is where more than half of this three-hour epic takes place. Grand Prix is an exhilarating celebration of men addicted to the thrill of racing with an unknown destiny, speeding into magnificent madness.
