Un nez sur des notes de fruits noirs, épices

En bouche, on a un vin avec des tanins fondus, de l'onctuosité et beaucoup de finesse. Sur des arômes de cassis, prunes, myrtilles, les épices (poivre en grains, réglisses), l'élevage est maîtrisé à la perfection avec légèreté. Une belle longueur en bouche avec une finale sur des notes fumées et noisettes torréfiées. Une merveille.

Un beau Saint-Emilion Grand Cru qui en a encore sous la pédale et qui ravit déjà nos papilles avec gourmandise et bonheur. Je vous le recommande. Un gros coup de cœur.

A nice length on the palate with a finish of smoky and roasted hazelnut notes. A wonder.

A beautiful Saint-Emilion Grand Cru which still has something under its belt and which is already delighting our taste buds with delicacy and happiness. I recommend it. A big favorite.

Hemp insulation from Cavac Biomaterials driven by the decarbonisation of buildings

A pioneer in hemp-based insulation, Cavac Biomaterials is investing 27 million euros to triple its production capacity. The new factory is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2024.

Cavac Biomaterials[1] wants the statements of the detractors of bio sourced materials to be treated as lies. With “only” 2,000 hectares of hemp cultivated in Vendée[2] and Deux-Sèvres[3] by 250 producers, the subsidiary of the agri-food cooperative Cavac of La Roche-sur-Yon[4] still holds some in reserve.

“We have 200,000 hectares of potential cultivation and will increase our hemp plots to 6,000 hectares within 12 months. Something to look forward to in terms of resources,” says Olivier Joreau, president of Cavac Biomaterials (60 employees). Its Sainte-Gemme-la-Plaine[5] factory, that transforms 15,000 tonnes of flax and hemp straw per year into insulating materials, has reached saturation point.

A new 12,000 m2 factory is being built in Sainte-Hermine[6], tripling its capacity. It will increase the Vendée-based cooperative's production of bio sourced insulation from 150,000 m3 to 450,000 m3 per year. The result is around thirty hires. The investment represents 27 million euros.

“The sector has no problem keeping up with the development of demand,” says the manager who is also president of the AICB[7], the association that represents French manufacturers producing materials for the construction market from plant biomass (wood, hemp, flax, straw, grass, etc.), animal biomass (sheep wool) or recycling sectors (paper, textile).

Certified products

The president anticipates a doubling of the sector's capacities within three years (excluding the wood sector used for structural materials).

“In recent years, bio sourced materials have become increasingly popular among building professionals under the new RE2020 thermal regulations[8] and the climate resilience law[9],” says the manager. Now benefiting from certifications that remove the obstacles to their use in construction, the sector is in constant development. According to the AICB, the overall market share of bio-sourced insulation has almost doubled, from 6% to 11% in less than ten years. For example, one in five lost attics is now insulated with bio sourced insulation.

Multi-outlet plant

A pioneer fifteen years ago, Cavac biomaterials intends to remain at the head of the race. Its flagship product Biofib'trio[10], an insulating sheet combining hemp, linen and a polyester fiber binder, is recognized as the brand of bio sourced insulation in France.

The Cavac subsidiary, which made 23 million euros as of June 30, 2023 (+10% versus 2022), also markets its hemp fibre in the form of technical fibre on an increasing number of markets, such as automotive industry, stationery, construction and public works. It represents 35% of the crushed straw and 80% of the turnover. The remainder, the hemp is calibrated and resold in bulk or in bags to make concrete and hemp blocks, mulch and animal litter.

7 septembre :

Visite de Trondheim, où St Olav est le saint patron de la ville, un peu comme St Denis pour Paris. Une grande, belle et moderne (suites aux nombreuses restaurations) cathédrale en son adoration domine la ville. Par ordre de priorité: on fait une lessive, on visite cathédrale et château, puis le quartier historique à moitié sur pilotis. En continuant vers le Nord on visite des gravures sur roches de rennes d'il y a 6000 ans. On bivouaquera dans un parc en abritant d'autres.

8 septembre :

Petite ballades dans le parc pour apercevoir ces gravures: renne, ours, homme sur ski, oie.

Puis route vers le NNNord, avec 3 N majuscule. On passe le parallèle 66°33 (a.k.a. cercle polaire arctique) à bord d'un ferry symbolisé par un globe qu'on aperçoit sur terre. Au désembarquement (débarquement ?) il pleut et nous dînons sur une aire de jeu avec table pique-nique à l'abris. Nous dormirons dans la voiture, allongés cette fois, après avoir baissé les sièges arrière. Mais avant cela, on regarde sur le portable le match d'ouverture de la coupe du monde de rugby: France - Nouvelle Zélande, avec des bières. On dormira bien après la victoire des bleus.

Journ��e un peu gâchée par la pluie qui nous cachera les beaux paysages qu'on était sensé voir en longeant la côte.

9 septembre :

La météo est toujours médiocre et les paysages toujours cachés. On s'approche néanmoins du glacier Svartisen pour apprécier des langues de glaces sur fond gris.

L'après-midi la météo change et laisse place au soleil. On monte sur un pont au sud de Bødo pour observer le Saltstraumen, un phénomène générant des tourbillons marins "géants" (les plus importants au monde dit-on) suite aux remplissages et vidages d'un fjord pendant les marées à un passage étroit. Je révise par la même occasion mes cours de mécanique des fluide.

Pour finir la journée, Micha a repéré une double plage rattachant une presqu'île sur le continent et nous nous y dirigeons. Apres 1h30 de marche pour 2km à vol d'oiseau, on accède finalement aux Bahamas et on n'y pique même une tête. Compte tenu de la latitude, l'eau est chaude: 11°. Bien plus chaude en tout cas que les lacs de glaciers. Évidemment on est seuls. On dormira au parking accédant à cette plage avec une belle vue sur la côte, les îles et plages environnantes.

10 septembre :

Belle météo prévue, mauvaise météo subit. C'est ainsi qu'on se retrouve après 750m d+ sur un sommet, le Steigtind, dans la purée de pois. Mais au moins nous apercevront des rennes et Micha ramassera 3kg de champignons. L'après-midi ne restera pas gravé dans les annales puisque nous faisons de la route touristique jusqu'à la presqu'île de Kjerringøy sous un ciel gris épais. J'y ferai une sieste pendant que Micha part photographier un phoque aperçu dans l'eau (oui, pas au sommet de ce matin). Nous dormirons à 200m du campement de la veille après avoir manger plein de cèpes tout frais.

Bilan rando: 10km, 750m d+

Non pas que la motivation me manque pour décrire cette journée pluvieuse, mais elle peut se résumer très simplement en 2 lignes:

“Roger of Hoveden: The Last Days and Death of Henry II, 1189, from The Chronicle.~

In the year of grace 1189, being the thirty-fifth and last year of the reign of king Henry, son of the empress Matilda, the said Henry was at Saumur, in Anjou, on the day of the Nativity of our Lord, which fell on the Lord’s day, and there he kept that festival; although many of his earls and barons, deserting him, had gone over to the king of France and earl Richard against him. 

After the feast of Saint Hilary, the truce being broken, which existed between the before-named kings, the king of France, and earl Richard and the Bretons, (with whom the said king of France and earl Richard had entered into covenants, and had given sureties that if they should make peace with the king of England, they would not omit to include them in that peace) made a hostile incursion into the territories of the king of England, and ravaged them in every direction.

On this, the cardinal John of Anagni came to the before named kings in behalf of our lord the pope, and sometimes with kind words, sometimes with threats, exhorted them to make peace. Moved by his urgent entreaties, the said kings, by the inspiration of the Divine grace, gave security that they would abide by the decision of himself, and of the archbishops of Rheims, Bourges, Rouen, and Canterbury, and named as the day for a conference to be held near La Ferte Bernard, the octave of Pentecost; on which the before-named cardinal, and the four archbishops above-mentioned, pronounced sentence of excommunication against all, both clergy and laity, who should stand in the way of peace being made between the said kings, the persons of the kings alone excepted.

On the day of the conference, the king of France, and the king of England, earl Richard, the cardinal John of Anagni, and the four archbishops before mentioned, who had been chosen for the purpose, and the earls and barons of the two kingdoms, met for a conference near La Ferte Bernard. 

At this conference, the king of France demanded of the king of England, his sister Alice to be given in marriage to Richard, earl of Poitou, and that fealty for his dominions should be sworn to the said Richard, and that his brother John, assuming the Gross, should set out for Jerusalem. 

To this the king of England made answer that he would never consent to such a proposal, and offered the king of France, if he should think fit to assent thereto, to give the said Alice in marriage to his son John, with all the matters previously mentioned more at large, more fully and more completely than the king demanded. 

The king of France would not agree to this; on which, putting an end to the conference, they separated, mutually displeased. However, the cardinal John of Anagni declared that if the king of France did not come to a complete arrangement with the king of England, he would place the whole of his territory under interdict; to which the king of France made answer, that he should not dread his sentence and that he cared nothing for it, as it was supported upon no grounds of justice. 

For he said, it was not the duty of the Church of Rome to punish the kingdom of France by its sentence or in any other manner, if the king of France should think fit to punish any vassals of his who had strewn themselves undeserving, and rebellious against his sway, for the purpose of avenging the insult to his crown; he also added, that the before-named cardinal had already smelt the sterling coin of the king of England. Then closing the interview, the king of France departed thence, and took La Ferte Bernard, and then Montfort, and next Malestroit, Beaumont, and Balim.

After this he came to Le Mans, on the Lord’s day, pretending that he was going to set out for Tours on the ensuing Monday; but when the king of England and his people seemed to have made themselves at ease as to the further progress of the king of France, he drew out his forces in battle array, for the purpose of making an assault upon the city. 

This being perceived by Stephen de Tours, the seneschal of Anjou, he set fire to the suburbs. The fire, however, rapidly gaining strength and volume, running along the walls, communicated with the city; seeing which, the Franks approached a bridge of stone, where Geoffrey de Burillun and many with him of the party of the king of England met them with the intention of pulling down the bridge; on which, a desperate conflict took place, and a great part of the armies were slain on both sides, and in the conflict, the before named Geoffrey was taken prisoner, and wounded in the thigh; many others also of the king of England’s army were taken, while the rest immediately tool to flight, with the intention of betaking themselves to the city, but the Franks entered it with them.

The king of England seeing this, and being in a state of desperation, contrary to his promise when he came, took to flight with seven hundred of his knights. For he had promised the inhabitants of that city that he would not forsake them, giving it as his reason, that his father rested there, as also, the circumstance that he himself was born there, and loved that city more than all others. 

The king of France pursued him for three miles; and if the stream which the Franks forded had not been very wide and deep, they would hare pursued them as they feed with such swiftness, that they would have been all taken prisoners. In this flight, many of the Welch were slain. 

The king of England, however, with a few of his men, got to Chinon and there took refuge within the fort. The rest of the household of the king of England who were surviving, took refuge within the tower of Le Mans; immediately on which, the king of France laid siege to the town, and, partly through his miners, partly the assaults of his engines, the tower was surrendered to him within three days, together with thirty knights and sixty men at arms.

Marching thence, he took Mont Double by surrender of the castle and its lord. For the viscount of this castle had been the means, indeed, the especial cause, of this catastrophe; for, lying in ambush, he had, armed, fallen upon Geoffrey, the earl of Vendôme, who was unarmed, and had wounded him so seriously, that at first his life was despaired of, though by the grace of God he afterwards entirely recovered from the effects thereof. 

The king of France was the more vexed at his acting thus, because the before-named viscount had strictly bound himself to the king of France, by a promise that he would injure none of his people either in going or returning, or annoy him while engaged in the siege of Le Mans. The king departing thence, the castle of Trou was surrendered to him, together with Roche l’Eveque, Montoire, Chateau Carcere, Chateau Loire, Chateau Chaumont, Chateau d’Amboise, and Chateau de Roche Charbon. 

At length, on the sixth day of the week after the festival of the Nativity of Saint John, on the day after the feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, the king of France came to Tours. On the Lord’s day next after this, Philip, earl of Flanders, William, archbishop of Rheims, and Hugh, duke of Burgundy, came to the king of England, who was then at Saumur, for the purpose of making peace between him and the king of France. 

The king of France had, however, sent him word before they set out, that from Chateau Saint Martin, whither he had betaken himself by fording the Loire, he should make an attack upon the city. Accordingly, on the ensuing Monday, at about the third hour, applying their scaling ladders to the walls on the side of the Loire, which on account of the small quantity of the water, was much contracted and reduced, the city was taken by storm, and in it eighty knights and a hundred men at arms. To their great disgrace, on the one side, the Poitevins were planning treachery against their liege lord the king of England, and on the other the Bretons, who had joined the king of France, and had obtained from him letters patent, to the effect that he would never make peace with the king of England unless the Bretons were included in the treaty. 

Accordingly, the king of England, being reduced to straits, made peace with Philip, king of France, on the following terms:

  "Upon this, the before-named king of France and king of England, and Richard, earl of Poitou, with their archbishops, bishops, earls, and barons, about the time of the feast of the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, held a conference between Tours and Arasie, where the king of England wholly placed himself under the control and at the will of the king of France. 

The king of England then did homage to the king of France, although at the beginning of the war he had renounced the lordship of the king of France, and the king of France had quitted all claim of his homage. It was then provided by the king of France that Alice, his sister, whom the king of England had in his charge, should be given up and placed in the charge of one of five persons, of whom earl Richard should make choice. 

It was next provided by the king of France that security should be given by the oath of certain men of that land that his said sister should be delivered up to earl Richard on his return from Jerusalem, and that earl Richard should receive the oath of fealty from his father’s subjects on both sides the sea, and that none of the barons or knights who had in that war withdrawn from the king of England and come aver to earl Richard should again return to the king of England, except in the last month before his setting out for Jerusalem; the time of which setting out was to be Mid-Lent, at which period the said kings and earl Richard were to be at Vezelay. 

That all the burgesses of the vills, demesne of the king of England, should be unmolested throughout all the lands of the king of France, and should enjoy their own customary laws and not be impleaded in any matter, unless they should be guilty of felony. The king of England was to pay to the king of France twenty thousand marks of silver; and all the barons of the king of England were to make oath that if the king of England should refuse to observe the said covenants, they would hold with the king of France and earl Richard, and would aid them to the best of their ability against tile king of England. 

The king of France and earl Richard were to hold in their hands the city of Le Mans, the city of Tours, Chateau Loire, and the castle of Trou; or else, if the king of England should prefer it, the king of France and earl Richard would hold the castle of Gisors, the castle of Pasci, and the castle of Novacourt, until such time as all the matters should be completed as arranged above by the king of France. 

While the before-named kings were conferring in person hereon, the Lord thundered over them, and a thunderbolt fell between the two, but did them no injury; they were, however, greatly alarmed, and separated accordingly, while all who were with them were astonished that the thunder had been heard so suddenly, seeing that no lowering clouds had preceded it. 

After a short time the kings again met together for a conference, on which a second time thunder was heard, still louder and d more terrible than before, the sky retaining its original sereneness; in consequence of which, the king of England, being greatly alarmed, would have fallen to the ground from the horse on which he was mounted, if he had not been supported by the hands of those who were standing around him. 

From that time he entirely placed himself at the will of the king of France, and concluded peace on the terms above written, requesting that the names of all those who, deserting him, had gone over to the king of France and earl Richard, should be committed to writing and given to him. This being accordingly done, he found the name of his son John written at the beginning of the list.

Surprised at this beyond measure, he came to Chinon, and, touched with grief at heart, cursed the day on which he was born, and pronounced upon his sons the curse of God and of himself, which he would never withdraw, although bishops and other religious men frequently admonished him so to do. 

Being sick even unto death, he ordered himself to be carried into the church, before the altar, and there devoutly received the communion of the body and blood of Christ; and after confessing his sins, and being absolved by the bishop and clergy, he departed this life in the thirty-fifth year of his reign, on the octave of the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, being the fifth day of the week; after a reign of thirty-four years, seven months, and four days. After his death, having plundered him of all his riches, all forsook him, so true it is that just as flies seek honey, wolves the carcass, and ants corn, this crew followed not the man, but his spoils. At last however, his servants returned, and buried him with royal pomp. On the day after his death, when he was being carried out for burial in the Church of the Nuns at Fontevraud, earl Richard, his son and heir, came to meet him, and, smitten with compunction, wept bitterly; immediately on which the blood flowed in streams from the nostrils of the body at the approach of his son. His son, however, proceeded with the body of his father to the abbey of Fontevraud, and there buried him in the choir of the Nuns, and thus it was that he was "among the veiled women as one wearing the veil."

The prior provenance of one of the first medieval manuscripts to arrive in Philadelphia

A late-fifteenth-century manuscript at the Library Company of Philadelphia contains an unpublished devotional text in French, the Traictie des VII fruis de tribulacion or Treatise on the Seven Fruits of Tribulation, written by a member of the Celestine order, an offshoot of the Benedictines founded by Pope Celestine V. The manuscript itself contains a single, heavily damaged opening miniature representing a kneeling layman in prayer before Saint Michael, Saint James (or possibly Saint Roch), and a bishop saint. The unidentified coat-of-arms below it has been erased and crudely re-drawn, frustrating our ability to identify the figure represented in the scene above. The preceding flyleaf contains a later ownership inscription, perhaps dating to circa 1600, also in French, that has unfortunately been partially effaced and rendered illegible, though the somewhat earlier, elaborate, late-Gothic penwork below it is clearly readable as “L’an mil cinq cens et trente huit,” or, the year fifteen-thirty-eight.

The manuscript is of special interest to Philadelphians because it once belonged to the pioneering bibliophile William Mackenzie (July 1758–1828), who bequeathed the little book to the Loganian Library, later the Library Company of Philadelphia, in 1828. As Edwin Wolf stated, at the time of his death, Mackenzie possessed “by far the most valuable collection of antiquarian and modern books up to then gathered by an American.”[1] The diminutive Traicitie des VII fruis can be found in the first Catalogue of the books belonging to the Loganian library, published in 1837. But the manuscript’s rather unusual title has facilitated the identification of this very volume in a Parisian auction catalog of 1785 (De Bure, Catalogue des livres rare et précieux de M. …. [d’Hess], Paris, 7 March 1785, lot 35).

This was the sale of Joseph-Louis, Baron d’Heiss, the ambassador of the Palatine Elector in Paris. According to a recent Christie’s sale catalogue the Baron “ruined himself through extravagant book acquisitions and was forced to sell his library in 1781 for 100,000 livres to Antoine-Rene d’Argenson, marquis de Paulmy (1722-1787), founder of the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal…. Able to pay off his debts, but bereft of his library, d’Heiss began to collect again, and in the next few years formed a second library, which was dispersed in his anonymous sale by de Bure.” Throughout the multiple sales of his collection, detailed here in an excellent blog post by Jean-Paul Fontaine, he preferred to remain anonymous, noted only as “M. le Baron d’***,” though his identity may have been an open secret to those in the know.

We do not know how rapidly Mackenzie purchased the manuscript following the sale, nor if he knew anything of its prior provenance. Little is known about William Mackenzie’s life, aside from his book collecting, though he apparently did not travel much beyond Philadelphia. The publication that accompanied a 1995 exhibition held at the Library Company, entitled William Mackenzie: America’s First Book Collector, provides some further information,[2] as does the entry in the American National Biography, which recalls that:

The dispersal of hundreds of monastic and aristocratic libraries during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars created an unprecedented opportunity for collectors such as Mackenzie, who were able to acquire a far greater amount of much older and rarer material on the open market than had previous generations. While few sources for Mackenzie’s purchases have been identified, it is known that he bought at local bookstores…. Trade between Europe and the United States had resumed in 1784, so by the following year the acquisition of such a book would have been feasible, though presumably an intermediary was used…. It is likely that he had a European agent looking out for his interests.[3]

Whether Mackenzie acquired the book directly from this sale via an agent in Europe, or through the intermediary of an American bookseller such as Thomas Dobson (1751–1823), is difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, the Library Company manuscript represents an extremely early example of an (admittedly modest) object from a major European aristocratic collection being purchased by a New World collector, preceding the large-scale American interest in medieval manuscripts by a century or more.

14 avril 2019, C'est maintenant officiel. Ces mots signent la fin de mon aventure chez Vans et sans vous mentir, c’est assez étrange comme sensation.

En ayant refermé derrière moi la porte du 1334 rue sainte-Catherine, je n'ai pas juste dit au revoir à un endroit: malgré les cinquantaines de paires qui s’empilent, d’aussi loin que je me souvienne, la seule chose qui a marqué mon image sont mes paires de Vans. C’était une évidence pour moi d’accepter un poste et d’y laisser mon empreinte. Ce n'est pas seulement une semelle, ça représente tout ce j’ai pu aimer, vivre, partager et tout ce que je suis, une partie de mon identité. Mais voilà, nous sommes à l'abri de rien et tout ce que j’étais n’est plus tout à fait ce que je suis. Bien sûr aucun souvenir, aucun endroit, ni personne ne me quittera vraiment. Cependant, avec le changement vient le besoin du renouveau, d'un nouveau départ. Suite à un arrêt de travail, j’ai décidé de quitter ma seconde famille. Une décision difficile mais voulue. De cette absence, je n’ai jamais pu dire au revoir à mes collègues, à cet endroit, à ces dernières années et surtout à mes amis. C’est la raison pour laquelle j’écris ces mots. Je garderai proche de mon cœur les personnes que j’ai rencontrées et elles se reconnaîtront. Sachez que Je pars fière de l’impact que j’ai pu laisser au sein notre équipe (8108): j’ai fait de mon mieux pour vous déléguer tout ce que je pouvais, tout en essayant de vous inspirer chaque jour. Et je suis persuadée que grâce à cela vous avez jamais abandonné. C'est maintenant à vous de montrer de quoi vous êtes capable. Si j'ai cru en vous, c'est qu'il y a une raison.

Quitter vans, c’est quitter la personne que j’étais.

Je me suis longtemps dit que le futur était tracé si on savait ce qu'on voulait, quand tout d'un coup tout est devenu imprévisible. Je ne savais plus ce que je voulais. Je me suis longtemps dit “je veux faire ça”, “je dois faire ça” et “je rêve de ça” pour finalement rien vouloir de tout “ça”. Tout a longtemps été idéalisé, puis tout à disparu. J’ai d’abord paniqué de voir tout se décomposer en mille morceaux, mais aujourd'hui j’essaye et m’efforce de ramasser ces morceaux, petits à petits, pour mieux les mettre à leur place. 

Peut-être faudrait-il toujours espérer le pire, pour mieux se reconstruire et en faire quelque chose mieux ? Mais la principale raison est que j'ai toujours pensé que j'étais forte mentalement (ma famille et mes amis vous le diront), mais j’ai aussi appris que rien ne nous évite l’éventuel épuisement psychologique. Je n'ai pas eu un parcours facile pour des raisons de santé et même si ça été un obstacle toute ma vie, j'ai quand même appris à grandir avec et à me dire que les choses arrivent pour une raison. Mais dernièrement j'ai réalisé que mon unique obstacle ne pouvait être que moi. D'aussi longtemps que je me souvienne, je n'ai jamais eu peur, peur des échecs, d'être blessé, d'abandonner ou d'être abandonné, mais vous savez quoi j'ai toujours ressenti cette boule de feu à l'intérieur de moi. Et J'ai merdé, elle était bien là pour une raison: je n'ai fait que taire la douleur, tout ce que j'ai pu ressentir, le bon comme le mauvais jusqu'à qu'il n'est plus rien. Sous une pierre, se cache de l’or.

Alors s’il vous plaît, si vous souffrez de dépression sachez que ça ne détermine pas qui vous êtes. Notre corps construit parfois des boucliers pour nous protéger du monde qui nous entoure. Il est important de prendre du temps pour vous et de ne jamais abandonné. On entend souvent « its okay not to be okay » mais la vérité c’est que ça ne l'est pas. Il ne faut pas avoir honte et parler, car même si certaines choses ne sont pas claires, c’est seulement en grattant votre roche que l’or scintillera à nouveau. Nous sommes tous importants et méritons plus qu’un simple « okay ». Le faux bonheur reste la pire des tristesses. Sachez que je n’oublierais jamais tous ces moments, ce qui ont cru en moi et tous ce que cela a pu m’apporter. Cependant, Il faut savoir construire sa carrière autour de votre vie, pas sa vie autour de sa carrière. Vous ne pouvez pas passer votre vie entière à tenir la porte aux autres et être en colère ou triste parce que personne ne vous en a remercié, parce que personne ne vous a demandé de tenir cette putain de porte. Alors, vivez votre passion, battez -vous pour vous-même, essayez-vous, trompez-vous et recommencer. Priorisez ces choses qui améliorent votre qualité de vie. Soyez fier de vous et n’oubliez jamais ce qui fait battre votre cœur.

April 14th, 2019, it is now official. Those words mean the end of my adventure at Vans and without lying, it is a very strange feeling.

While closing the doors of the 1334 Saint-Catherine street behind me, I didn’t only say goodbye to a place; despite the 50 and more pairs that are piling up, as far as I can remember, the only thing that marked my image are my pair of Vans. It was evident for me to accept a position for this brand and to leave my mark. It is not only about the sole, it represented everything that I loved, lived, shared and everything that I am, a part of my identity. But alas, we are aren’t safe from everything and everything that I was isn’t exactly who I am anymore. With that said every memory, place and person will always be a part of me. However, with change comes the need to renew, to a new beginning. Following a sick leave, I decided to leave my second family. A wanted but difficult decision to take. And with that I never had the chance to say goodbye to my colleagues, to that place, to those last years and especially to my friends, which is the reason why I am writing these words. I’ll keep close to my heart the people that I’ve met along the way and they’ll recognize themselves. Be sure that I’m leaving proud of the impact that I left on our team (8108): I did my best to delegate everything I could, in the means to inspire you all everyday. And I am quite sure that thanks to it, none of you ever gave up. It is now to you to show what you are made of. If I believed in you, then there was a reason for it.

Leaving Vans, is leaving the person I was. I’ve always told myself that the future was written in stars if we knew what we wanted, when all of a sudden I didn’t know what I wanted, all became unforeseeable. For the longest time I was driven by the “I want to do that”, “I need to do that” and “ I dream of that” to finally not wanting to do none of “that”. Everything has, for so long, been idealized and then everything disappeared. First I panicked at the sight of it all, crumbling into a million pieces, but today I’m trying and fighting to pick the pieces up, little by little, to better fit them at their place. 

Maybe we should hope for the worst, to rebuild ourselves and make something better? But the main reason is that I always thought I was mentally strong (friends and family could attest to that), however I’ve also learned that nothing escapes the inevitable psychological weariness. I never really had the easiest path due to health reasons and even if it was an obstacle my whole life, I still managed to live and grow with it, and to tell myself that things happen for a reason. Recently I realized that my only obstacle in life, could only be me. As long as I can remember, I was never afraid of anything, afraid of failure, afraid of being hurt, of giving up or others giving up on me. But you know what? I’ve always felt I had this fire inside of me. And I messed up, it was there for a reason: all I did was suppress the pain, everything I could’ve felt, the good just like the bad until there was nothing left. Inside the rock lies gold. 

So please, if you ever suffer from depression know that it doesn’t make you who you are. Sometimes our body and soul creates these walls and barriers to protect us from the world that surrounds us. It is important to take time for yourself and to never give up. We always hear “it’s okay not to be okay” but the truth of the matter is that it’s not. We shouldn’t feel ashamed, on the contrary we should speak about it, because even though some things aren’t clear, it’s only by scratching that rock that the gold will shine through and sparkle again. We are all important and deserve more than a simple “okay”. The worst sadness is a false happiness. I will never forget all those moments, those that believed in me and everything that it has brought me. Yet, we need to start building our career around our life and not our life around our career. You can’t live your entire life holding the door open for others and be upset or sad when no one thanks you for it, because no one has asked you to hold that goddamn door. With all being said, live your passion, fight for yourself, take chances, make mistakes and try again. Prioritize those things that make your life that much better. Be proud of yourselves and never forget what keeps that heart beating.

Aujourd’hui, par cette belle journée anormalement chaude et ensoleillée de février, nous avons décidé de nous éloigner un peu plus du Moulin. Le département du Lot est traversé par 2 rivières, au nord la Dordogne que nous connaissons bien puisqu’elle coule à 5 minutes de notre maison et au sud le Lot que nous connaissons beaucoup moins, arrosant la préfecture du département, Cahors. Direction donc le sud vers Bouziès, a un peu plus d’une heure de voiture, qui constituera le point de départ de notre ballade. La route est sinueuse mais passe à travers les superbes paysages de Causse qui caractérisent le relief karstique propre à notre région, roches calcaires apparentes, bosquets de chênes et murets de pierres délimitant les parcelles.

Arrivée à Bouziès, après avoir photographié le superbe et incontournable Château des Anglais, nous prenons le sentier balisé empruntant le chemin de halage vers Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, village labellisé parmi les “Plus Beaux Villages de France” et ayant également obtenu le label “Village préféré des Francais” de l’émission télévisée éponyme de Stéphane Bern. Le sentier borde dès le départ la rivière et longe la falaise. Celle-ci a été creusée à partir de 1845 sur 300m pour permettre le passage des chevaux afin de permettre aux gabares ou bateaux à fond plat, de remonter les courants chargés de marchandises locales. Les produits chargés étaient plutôt des vins de Cahors, des prunes s��chées mais également les productions des tourneurs sur bois et plus précisément des robinets de tonneaux à vin. Ensuite le chemin traverse des champs, puis se transforme en sentier pentu en direction de Saint-Cirq-Lapopie érigé sur un piton rocheux dominant le Lot. A cette période le village est en hibernation. Peu de touristes sont présents et on peut admirer ce magnifique endroit avec ses petites ruelles, les ruines de l’ancien château, ses petites places pavées, ses restaurants et boutiques de produits régionaux, sans oublier son point de vue vertigineux sur le Lot. 

Puis retour vers Bouziès, cette fois-ci en prenant la route également peu fréquentée à cette période de l’année. Celle-ci surplombe le chemin de halage et la rivière qui coule en contrebas. Encore une vue panoramique extraordinaire en ne pas manquer pour clôturer cette belle randonnée.

Today, on this beautiful unusually hot and sunny day in February, we decided to move a little further away from the Mill. The Lot department is crossed by 2 rivers, to the north the Dordogne which we know well since it flows 5 minutes from our house and to the south the Lot which we know much less, watering the prefecture of the department, Cahors. Heading south towards Bouziès, a little over an hour by car, which will be the starting point of our trip. The road is winding but passes through the superb landscapes of Causse which characterize the karst relief specific to our region, apparent limestone rocks, groves of oaks and low stone walls delimiting the plots.

Arriving in Bouziès, after having photographed the superb and the must-see  Château des Anglais, we take the marked path following the towpath to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a village labelled among the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and having also obtained the label "Favourite Village of the French" from Stéphane Bern's eponymous television show. The path borders the river from the beginning and runs along the cliff. This one was dug from 1845 on 300m to allow the horses to pass through in order to allow the barges or flat-bottomed boats to go up the currents loaded with local goods. The products loaded were mainly Cahors wines, dried plums but also the production of woodturners and more precisely wine barrel taps. Then the path crosses fields, then turns into a steep path towards Saint-Cirq-Lapopie built on a rocky peak overlooking the Lot. At this time the village is in hibernation. Few tourists are present and you can admire this magnificent place with its small alleys, the ruins of the old castle, its small cobbled squares, its restaurants and shops selling regional products, without forgetting its breathtaking view of the Lot.

Then return to Bouziès, this time taking the road which is also not very busy at this time of year. It overlooks the towpath and the river below. Another extraordinary panoramic view not to be missed to close this beautiful hike.

2350 kms en 14 jours.

3 parcs nationaux : Mont Tremblant, Fjord Saguenay, chute de Montmorency.

4 parc régionaux : Forêt de l'Ouareau, parc de la Rivière Moulin à Chicoutimi, parcs Mont Royal et Jean Drapeau à Montréal.

Une multitude de petits parcs municipaux. Des lacs et des chutes par centaines.

3 îles : île d'Orléans (Québec) , île Saint Hélène et île Notre Dame à Montréal.

Des paysages d'immensité.

Des monuments aux architectures très diversifiées. Une bonne immersion dans la culture du pays grâce aux visites mais aussi au logement en " Couette et café" (Bed and Breakfast).

Conduire :

Une voiture automatique, puissante, maniable, à la pointe de la technologie (connexion du tableau de bord avec toutes les applications du téléphone) et très confortable (sièges chauffants). Par contre, comment peut-on encore faire des voitures neuves qui consomment autant : 9 L /100kms? 😭

C'est très facile de conduire au Québec car ils ne vont pas vite. Les limitations ne vont pas au delà de 100 km/h, elles sont d'une grande précision et adaptées à toutes les situations.

On pense avoir toutes celles qui existent 😉

Ici on a le temps de profiter du paysage. Il vaut mieux raisonner en temps plutôt qu'en kilomètres...

Si quelqu'un sait ce que cela veut dire ?

Les Québécois :

Bien plus serviables et respectueux des autres que les Français. Cela commence dès les premiers mots échangés avec le sourire : "Bonjour, vous allez bien ?" On sait bien que c'est une formule de politesse mais c'est très agréable. Tout est formulé de façon à ne heurter personne.

Attention, la police peut verbaliser les gens plus facilement que chez nous s'ils ne respectent pas les règles.

Il est interdit de fumer à moins de 9 mètres des restaurants, administrations et lieux publics (comme les arrêts de bus).

On comprend mieux pourquoi on ne trouve pas de détritus au bord des routes.

Montréal est le seul endroit où nous ayons vu des saletés dans les rues.

Les Québécois sont TRES inquiets pour leur pays à cause du manque de main d'œuvre dans tous les domaines. C'est essentiellement dû à la démographie mais le covid n'a pas aidé.

Normandie :

Être Normands est plutôt un atout auprès des Québécois francophones parce qu'ils nous considèrent comme de lointains cousins. Ils connaissent souvent Honfleur avec Champlain, Dieppe avec Vauquelin et Caen pour d'autres raisons.

Les animaux :

Des centaines d'écureuils, les animaux du zoo de Saint Félicien, des oies sauvages, des hérons... Des baleines !

Mais aucun ours, raton laveur ou orignal à l'état sauvage.

La langue :

La première chose à savoir, c'est que le Québécois parle fort. Il faut parfois élever soi même la voix pour avoir une conversation avec quelqu'un au restaurant.

L'accent est très variable. Il fait sourire et il faut parfois se concentrer avec certaines personnes mais les gens sont compréhensibles...

Le Québécois est un mélange du Français parlé par nos grands parents (voire arrières grands-parents) et d'expressions anglaises traduites mot à mot (pour la conservation du Français). Cela donne de drôles d'expressions dont nous avons fait une petite liste :

- Aller au bout de son courage.

- Vous en avez pour un quart d'heure. (pour un bon moment)

- Elle est habillée en bonhomme carnaval

- Ils ne jouent pas à shifumi mais à Roche papier, ciseaux

- J'en ai jusqu'aux tétons : J'en ai ras le bol.

- Eau régulière pour de l'eau du robinet

- Je vous fais le réchaud de café : je vous ressert du café

- Courir la chance

- Il a un point de vue bien campé

- Barrer sa voiture ou autre chose : fermer

- Faire son numéro 2 : faire la grosse commission.

Je me tords le cerveau à trouver une solution.

C'est du jus de lavabo : c'est du jus de chaussette

La nourriture :

Elle est à l'image de la population, cosmopolite. Ils sont en avance en ce qui concerne la nourriture vegan.

La poutine : il vaut mieux éviter celle des restaurants de chaînes, celle des restaurants plus gastronomique est bien meilleure.

La bière est une institution. Chaque petite ville a ses microbrasseries. Elle se boit en pinte qu'elle soit en fut ou en canette.
