Episode 002: Punish Them! The House of Fortune is the Monster Mansion

Season 01 - Episode 02

Original Air Date: March 14, 1992

Fortune tellers gain devoted followings. But they also mind control you. Sometimes it’s best to not know what’s coming. 

This is one of the episodes that was completely removed from the original English dub. I guess they thought that 1995 American children were not ready for the concept of fortune telling. Plus, you know, that scene with Umino and Haruna. You know the one I’m talking about.

My Anonymous Canadian Friend said: “I never realized until this post that ep 2 of sailor moon wasn’t English dubbed, because as a kid i saw it in french once, so it has always "existed” for me.“

I guess the French and French/Canadian are more accepting of the occult than Americans were at the time.

Haha. Look at Usagi. She’s so agile when she’s clumsy.

Are back-alley fortune tellers really this popular in Japan? And look at Jadeite. Totally inconspicuous.

I love that when Umino confesses his feelings for Usagi to Naru, she straight up laughs at him. Girl, that is going to be YOUR boyfriend pretty soon.

Naru is a vampire!

Umino is a delusional fool; though he did design his own handheld video game in 1992. That’s pretty awesome.

When the fortune teller in the alley tells Usagi about his competition and points directly across the street, she stares blankly at his finger for a moment before realizing that he was pointing. Usagi, you lovable dolt.

Then, when she finally sees the place, she calls it gaudy! Usagi’ll read you to filth!

This is the first time we see Motoki! So dreamy…. for a cartoon character.

Sailor V has to fight baby Godzilla.

Usagi is basking in the glow of sitting next to Motoki, and Luna is just staring at her. The anime really made Luna a creepy buzzkill. Love it. 

Is it a common practice in Japan to flip your shoes to make a decision? Or was this just an excuse to throw a shoe at Mamoru? Most people don’t need an excuse to throw a shoe at Mamoru, at least at this point in the series.

The Many Faces of Usagi, Part Two: Angered Embarrassment

And now we meet Usagi’s dad. He’s a rare sight in the anime series.

Expelled.

So the youma for this episode, Balm, is standing outside of the school collecting the energy from Umino and the other jerkwad kids. Yet the day before, she had a TON of customers. Why is she personally collecting the energy from just Umino and his loser friends? Why not larger groups of people? Why not stay at the store and collect the energy of the people who come to you? BECAUSE THE PLOT DEMANDS IT.

Once again, Usagi stops something bad from happening with crying. And then, when Naru tells her it’s okay, she immediately stops crying and feels better.

I’m sure anyone reading this will quickly discover my love for Usagi. She’s such an amazing and well-rounded character. And I absolutely love that in this episode, her second outing as Sailor Moon, she has forgotten her transformation phrase. If I had been given super powers activated by a special phrase, you can bet I would NEVER forget that phrase.

"What’s worse than old men being envious of youth and popularity are those that think nothing of people’s feelings.” Usagi, what the hell are you talking about?

The youma, Balm, reveals her true form.

The cards controlling the kids and taking their energy apparently control every action they make, down to walking. When Tuxedo Mask hits Balm with a rose and she’s distracted, Umino and the others can’t move at all.

Oh, I see, Usagi. Couldn’t remember the simple phrase that gives you MAGICAL POWERS but you remember Tuxedo Mask, the adult man you saw in disguise from a distance at night once.

Usagi’s greatness… she forgives Umino immediately. Granted, she’s one of the few people who actually knew what was going on. But still!
