DISCLAIMER:  This headcanon references a headcanon from my Mamoru blog, as my Mamoru headcanons strongly influence my portrayal of Helios.  The details of Helios’ appointment as guardian and his life during the Silver Millennium will be ignored for interactions with any other Mamoru, as I don’t want to put my headcanons onto someone else. These details are just for my own reference of my portrayal of Helios!
                              *     the aspect of setsuna being a fragment of pluto is a personal headcanon of mine!
When Queen Calyce had learned she was with child, she was approached by the court Seers who foretold of a great power being bestowed upon the yet unborn prince.  The Seers warned that, while he would be powerful, he would face challenges that could very well lead him to ruin without the proper protection.  While the Golden Kingdom rejoiced the news of an heir’s imminent arrival, Calyce and Aethlius began to make preparations in the hopes of strengthening their son against the turbulent future that awaited him.  Along with appointing a new edict that would enlist four sons of four prominent families in the royal court, the king and queen began working in tandem with the court magicians to create a fail-safe protection for the power their son carried in the terrible circumstance that the four heavenly kings failed in their protection.
As the Golden Kingdom celebrated the coming arrival of their beloved prince, the most trusted of the king and queen worked silently in the capital of Elysion.  They created a place hidden within the folds of immensely powerful magic, a mirror realm of their capital in which to hide this protection of their beloved son, and they called it Elysium.  This place would house a chosen guardian to bless their son with the ancient magicks of their land, the magicks that allowed the spirits to roam untouched despite the world around them.  After the birth of Prince Endymion, the search for an appropriate guardian began for several years before finally ending with the discovery of a young court magician in training named Helios.  Helios was three summers younger than their beloved Endymion, and at the tender age of only seven, he was selected as the one who would be bound in the ways of the old fay folk to a willing creature of the spirit wilds.  Helios accepted the role he was given, an honour that was not his to decline, and was sent into the wilds to see which mythical creature would bestow its blessing onto him.
Helios was chosen by the pegasus and was forever changed—his hair became white, his eyes a brilliant red, and the markings of the pegasus displayed prominently upon his forehead.  Helios was granted two young magicians that were designated as Endymion’s Maenads, with the express duty of acting as a final line of defense should someone enter the realm of Elysium.  When the Golden Kingdom began to fall to Beryl’s rebellion, Helios could do nothing more than enter his prayer stasis while the Maenads stood guard, watching as their people were slain and their beloved prince fell to a woman’s jealousy... and as Sailor Saturn dropped her glaive, Helios and the Maenads were frozen in time, as the mirror realm could only reflect the memory of a long dead kingdom, leaving them locked in the ghosts of the past.  They stayed for centuries, unable to age or change, forever praying over the prince who lived several lives before he finally found his princess again.
So intricately bound to Endymion as he was, the Maenads were not shocked to see Helios die when Galaxia killed their beloved prince.  They continued their duty of standing guard over Elysium despite their duty having failed, even as the beauty of Elysium began to decay and rot around them, and they remained even when Usagi threw herself into the Galaxy Cauldron.  They remained even as Helios manifested in a shower of white light and feathers, hand to his chest in confusion as he expressed the feeling that a piece of him was missing.  He spoke in hushed, awed tones of the guardian of the Galaxy Cauldron’s voice declaring that, as Endymion was given a chance to live again, so too would he be given new life.
Much like Sailor Pluto *, Helios could not leave the realm of Elysium for any extended period of time, as it was his duty to remain there for as long as Endymion would live.  It was thus that the Galaxy Cauldron did for him as it did for Pluto, allowing his true self to remain spiritually present in the prayer chamber of Elysium while a fragment of himself was “reborn” as a human boy on Earth.  He would finally be able to age again and experience life for the first time, though he was warned that this could not last forever.  A fragment cannot live forever—eventually, over time, Helios will find himself growing weaker and weaker until his physical body “dies” and he returns to himself in Elysium.  While Helios had been given a gift in the form of a chance at life, he’d also been cursed in the same way that Usagi and Small Lady had been, touched by immortality due to the complex bonding of himself to the Golden Crystal and his own lack of a star seed.
Thus, the boy known as Helios awoke to the sight of his prince’s astonished expression, his hair and eyes reflecting that of a Japanese boy instead of an Elysian touched by the pegasus.  Mamoru had swiftly assumed guardianship of the young priest—an odd reversal of their roles in Helios’ eyes—and worked tirelessly to provide the boy with an identity of his own.  He called him Miyamoto Yukiharu, his fourteen year old distant cousin who had no other family left following the tragic passing of his parents, and eventually Mamoru enrolled him into junior high school.  Life as a normal boy was strange, every day allowing him something new, and it had taken Mamoru months to not only curb Yukiharu’s formality toward himself and Usagi  ( he still found Yukiharu calling them prince and princess )  but to also explain even the most basic of advances in technology to him.  His introduction to snapchat had been a treat™ that Mamoru would never forget.
Much like the sailor soldiers, Yukiharu is capable of transforming for battle if the need arises.  It’s a relatively subtle affair, a wordless prayer prompting a simple wave of light passing over his features to reveal his white hair, priest robes, and the mark of the pegasus upon his brow;  however, this change allows Helios access to his own power, bridging the gap between his true self and his physical form for the duration of his transformation.  Helios is undeniably a support archetype on the battlefield, as his abilities are centered around shielding others from harm and healing their wounds, but he has some other useful abilities that he hadn’t previously—namely, the large white wings of the pegasus sprouting from his back that allow him the power of flight.  Helios often uses this form alongside Chibiusa when duty calls, as he wishes to protect her from anything that would harm her.
