Melody

A sweet, soft melody played on the radio; and in front of that, a couple danced gracefully. Their hands grasped tightly above their heads, and one’s hand on the other’s waist. The head of one rested on the head of the taller partner; their eyes closed as they swayed around the large room; slow and steady. Porcelain antiques watched the two danced. The tall one stared into space, rubbing his fingers over the red velvet fabric binding the waist of his partner. He Listened to himself breathe. A dim light flickered, and the taller partner pulled the shorter one in close. Soft murmurs sung along with the song under the man’s breath. His sways became more passionate but still graceful as he rested his chin on the top of the smaller one’s head. His voice began to shake and squeak at the sound of a low rumble in the distance; his eyes squinting tightly as he held the smaller one closer… tighter. Sirens cried and screamed in the distance. The radio went static, and the tall one whispered in a shaky breath;

“Come on… come on…”

A grim orange light peered through the wooden, rotten boards in the windows, casting an almost blindfold-like strip of golden, but somewhat grungy light over the tall one’s eyes. Tears glistened and scattered off his eyelids as he blinked. As the melody faded into pure static, the tall one kissed the smaller one’s pale, chapped lips… who then bent back so far into their own knees - like a ragdoll. Their arms hung like pendulums; but slower, and not so steady. The tall one scooped up the smaller one - in a bridal position. He stepped towards the leather lavender loveseat, beneath the Honeysuckle Bower, and rested his partner onto the loveseat. A white silk sheet was thrown over them, and the tall one kneeled over them; a final kiss shared between the two, though that forsaken sheet separated their lips by a millimetre.

The lachrymose man grabbed a gun, walking out of the room with his broad shoulders tense and his heart pained. His eyes filled with agony looked ahead of him, but his head remained down. Hot tears blurred his vision as he walked into the misty, orange, epochal world… he knew the apocalypse would come.
