Mrs. Hudson attends the first ever birthday party in 221B.
January 6
The fact that Epiphany and Sherlock’s birthday fell on the same date, should surprise no one. He’s quite smug about it himself, like the drama queen he is. I’m inserting an eyeroll right here! This is me a tiny bit inebriated with one glass too many of Tawny Port. No matter, it’s been a lovely day…
My Sacher Torte turned out to be perfect. The sponge had just the right consistency, the apricot jam I bought was exquisite and the chocolate glaze appeared shiny and rich. Sherlock almost drooled when he saw it.
“Happy birthday, Sherlock,” I say after I hand the cake to John.
I go over to hug him, and he embraces me for a long time, whispering his thanks, and finishes with kissing my cheek. His eyes are more green than blue today, and they shine bright. He’s happy, I realise.
Molly comes straight from the airport, a curtesy of Mycroft apparently, which Sherlock scoffs about, but only out of habit it seems. There’s no trace of hostility, and Molly brings a gift that makes Sherlock beam inappropriately.
“You got your hands on his ears!” Sherlock exclaims when he’s unwraps and opens the small box.
Molly blushes furiously and looks utterly pleased with herself. Her blush deepens when Sherlock kisses her cheek and thanks her more politely than I’ve ever witnessed him do.
“Perhaps wait with those until the party’s over?” John suggests mildly with such fondness in his voice, it almost makes me blush too.
“Of course, John,” Sherlock agrees softly, though I can see he aches to examine whoever’s ears Molly has gifted him.
***
After my fourth, or was it the fifth glass of port, I take my leave. Molly accompanies me downstairs to collect Tim. I’ll miss him, but in the long run, I think he’s better off with Molly. I’m too accustomed to live alone, and Tim’s onslaught on my furniture is something I can do without. Besides, what I saw before I descended to my flat, made it quite clear that my taxing days are over.
I turned to close the door to 221b behind me and right there, in front of the fireplace, John cupped Sherlock’s face in his hands, while Sherlock’s hands were secured around John’s waist. Just before their lips met, I heard John’s whisper, and it made my heart swell with affection for the two men.
“Happy birthday, my love.”

Red Bull BassLine 2023 - besties, get ready for “Mira’s tennis experience - part 3”
long story short: last year's edition was better.
don't get me wrong it was really good this year, but i think last year's was better (and 2021's edition was better as well).
line-up 2023 was: Andrey Rublev, Domi Thiem, Jurij Rodionov, Fábián Marozsán, Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Zverev. obviously, i had my difficulties with a part of the line-up.
what was really sad was that 4 out of the 6 players left before the event was over. Andrey left after his last game, Tiafoe, Marozsán and Rodionov left before the break before the final, which means only the finalsts Domi and Zverev stayed until the very end.
Autographs i got an autograph from Domi - which i'm very very proud of!! 🥰🥰 but for most kids it's it wasn't very easy to get an autography. Andrey didn't do any (same for Marozsán), Rodionov only did like 5 autographs, Tiafoe didn't want to get up from his chair to write autographs...so he asked you to throw the stuff you wanted to get signed at him (works for all the tennis balls, doesn't work for pictures/photos, posters, etc. but he didn't really care), Domi and Zverev were the only ones to write LOTS of autographes after their final.
Andrey It was Andrey's birthday yesterday, so Domi and the whole crowd sung "happy birthday, dear Rublo" before their match <33 in Austria we say "laut, falsch und mit Begeisterung" when people sing something very enthusiastic but it doesn't match the notes 😂 and he got a "Sacher-Torte" a typically Austrian cake. They wanted Andrey to eat or at least taste it and while Andrey was discussing with the presenters if he wants to do it or not, Zverev cut the cake, put a piece of it on a plate and handed it over to Andrey. But because there were no forks Andrey had to bite off??? it was a bit of a chaos 😂 BUT I HAVE A VIDEO OF IT!
During Red Bull BassLine there is a DJ playing music almost during the whole event and Andrey was singing along almost the whole time. personally i think his best performance was during Friday by Nightcrawlers and Riton.
Domi Domi looked so happy when the crowd was cheering for him when he entered the arena <33 his tennis was quite good, a few mistakes but some BEAUTIFUL long line back hands 🥹 i've never seen something more beautiful (and i've seen Carlitos play live). and he is so unbelievable beautiful in real life 💕 his smile is so so cute, i honestly can't 😭😭
Zverev i was honestly so annoyed by him the whole evening bc he knew exactly what to do and to say that the crowd would cheer for him...at the end he stayed until almost every fan had an autography etc, he was the last to leave and of course ppl loved it 😒 and his tennis was really good yesterday. very high serves speed, lots of aces and he moved good on court 😒 it was disgusting.
Tiafoe, Marozán, Rodionov and i know i sound ignorante now or like i don't care about the others but...i don't know what to say about the other three 😂 Tiafoe looked happy to be here, but his tennis wasn't that good, he made a lot of mistakes, played a bit too fast and lost his matched really clear. Marozsán seems quite nice but he didn't do anything...his tennis was nice but he didn't interact with the crowd or the other players. And almost the same for Rodionov, he said he was very nervous to play this kind of tennis-event with such different rules and all that stuff (and his puls was the highest of all six during playing (Zverev had the lowest))

Watching the latest video of Max Miller's Tasting History on sachertorte I felt that the story told from its creation to Max trying the original, however true, makes for a funny little parable.
A young Franz Sacher is pressured by the prince and chancellor himself to make a cake that must compete with the elaborate, artful and downright baroque tortes and pastries of the time. But being so young and untrained he instead bakes a simple chocolate cake with an almost obscenely bare and undecorated chocolate glaze – a symbol that this cake shines not with its glamourous appearance but with its taste. A folktale-like story about the earnest simplicity of the working class outliving the hollow superficiality of the aristocracy; one that the city of Vienna, as well as the Café Sacher prides and advertises itself with today.
Nearly two centuries after its creation, the original Sachertorte served at the Café Sacher boasts a near-inedibly solid chocolate glaze. By chasing the perfect featureless appearance that made the torte famous, the Café has opted to include egg whites in the glaze to create a smooth matte surface in sacrifice of the actual eating experience. The hollow superficiality of baroque maximalism merely replaced with the hollow superficiality of contemporary minimalism.

National Sacher Torte Day
The #SacherTorte is a famous Viennese cake invented by Austrian Franz Sacher in 1832. It is the most famous chocolate cake in the world.
The original recipe consists of a chocolate sponge base with two thin layers of apricot jam topped by chocolate icing. It is commonly served with unsweetened whipped cream while the exact recipe is kept a secret, it is speculated that the magic lies in the chocolate icing consisting of three types of dark chocolate that are produced by German and Belgian manufacturers particularly for this purpose.

An eventful and busy day for a certain landlady.
January 5
It’s been another eventful day. My hand is steadier tonight, due to said events. Sherlock’s playing a piece I’ve heard before. Probably something played at the New Year’s Concert from Vienna. A Strauss waltz, I think. It’s beautiful. I must say I prefer it when he plays like this rather than assaulting his violin.
Tim has, as mentioned, changed his mood alongside mine. He was quite considerate and cuddly when my bad mood struck, but now he’s found a skein of yarn to fight with. I haven’t the heart to scold him about it. It’s not that I’m in need of it anyway. I can’t remember the last time I knitted.
John surprised me just before lunch, and that was the end of all the ache my body and mind had bestowed me with the first days of this year.
“You know what day it is tomorrow?” John asked me when we sat down at my kitchen table with a cuppa.
“Of course, dear. It’s Sherlock’s birthday. And Epiphany, but I guess it’s the former you’re referring to,” I answer cheekily.
John chuckles and blushes slightly. He clears his throat before he comes forth with his request.
“Indeed, Sherlock’s birthday, Mrs. Hudson. And you know that he normally doesn’t celebrates it, but…”
John trails off, seeming uncertain on how to continue.
“Go on, John,” I urge him.
“Well, it’s a bit different this year, I think.”
The blush gets deeper by the minute, and I find it adorable.
“I…uhm…well…I want this year to be the start of something new, you see. Nothing big, he wouldn’t want that. At all. Just the three of us. Maybe Molly, Greg and Mike as well, but I haven’t asked them. Mycroft…I think he…”
“Maybe next year,” I say, hoping to be helpful.
“Yeah,” John breathes and seems relieved.
“Do you want me to bake something?” I ask innocently, knowing that’s exactly why he’s come down here.
“Would you mind?” he asks a bit anxious. “I know you’ve been…”
“Nonsense, John! There’s nothing wrong with me. Not anymore at least. That Austrian chocolate cake would do nicely, I think,” I say and start to scribble down a shopping list.
John inhales sharply and looks at me with awe.
“You know how to make the Sacher Torte?” he asks incredulously.
His perfect pronunciation astounds me, but I guess it’s Sherlock’s doing. I can’t help but roll my eyes at him. There are so many things John doesn’t know about my past. Sherlock too, for that matter. I’m tempted to test my Austrian accent on him but decide against it. Best not give him a heart attack on top of everything.
“Leave it to me, dear,” I tell him.
***
My second visitor today was Sherlock. What he had deduced about John and his plans for the next day, didn’t surprise me one bit. I wonder if he knows how attuned he is to John and his every doing. Perhaps not consciously. By now, I guess it’s out of habit. Natural. Like breathing, which he finds so boring. I can’t help but smile at his childish behaviour. My precious boy.
“What can I do for you, dear?” I ask when Sherlock walks into my sitting room.
He doesn’t bother with knocking today, knowing that I’m mostly back to my normal self.
“I hope you granted John’s wish about tomorrow,” Sherlock starts.
When he opens his mouth to speak again, I hold up my hands to stop him.
“Of course, I did, Sherlock. Why wouldn’t I? Honestly, my dear, sometimes…”
I huff and beckons him to leave so I can start baking his cake. He takes my hand, brings it to his lips and kisses it tenderly. It brings tears to my eyes and when he thanks me in his most sincere tone, I spot a bit of moisture in his eyes as well.
