    SABURO RECOILS THE MOMENT her request is given, anxiety coiling in the pit of his stomach shifting into what feels like an endless cavern for an all-too-long pause— perhaps it’s a complete overreaction, but he’s always been followed by a lingering worry about how others perceive him, and most of it is internal anyways. Truth be told, he hadn’t even been going to touch it, just taking a closer look, but the assumption leaves his nerves running high as he can’t help but wonder if she’s already starting to hate him for it.

  “Sorry-” He says quick once he catches his breath, taking a clear step back this time. “I wasn’t going to touch it, but...it was wrong to approach without asking, anyways.” While far from an exclamation, his voice is undoubtedly frantic. “Your work, it’s...interesting, but I shouldn’t bother you further, I’ll get going.”

"Please do not touch that." Her voice, though quiet, soft-spoken in volume, holds hidden authority. She does not need to make threats but her things will not be touched. She does not even have to turn to face the offending party; she can hear the footsteps, knows the model building on the table is eye catching enough to warrant curiosity.

"The glue is not dry yet," the architect continues, voice gentle if not monotonous. "If you destroy my project before it has a chance to dry...I shall be quite...cross."

SABURO HOLDS HIS TONGUE on the initial response, an ingrained instinct that he only moments later ( remarkable for him, really ) realizes he doesn't have to follow with Kenta at all. His expression is mostly concern as they round the nearest corner— he isn't... embarrassed, not as much as he would have been in the past ( it was never them, they know that by now, but for someone often in front of audiences, Saburo never did well with eyes on him ), but he is still generally reserved, and going somewhere else seemed the best option for now. Especially when they reacted so passionately to someone taking issue with him.

"It shouldn't be, you'd say anything on your mind while sober, too." Teasing, and he doesn't even have to fight off the thought that Kenta may take it the wrong way after he says it. Saburo manages a small smile, finds their hand and squeezes it. "I... appreciate it, but I think I'd rather you safe, too. ... How much have you had?"

      SABURO DOESN’T RESPOND IMMEDIATELY, instead biding his time on an answer as his gaze stays fixed on...well, nothing in particular. If he locks eyes with Kenta, they’ll surely expect a quicker response out of him, and he knows damn well that the moment he pushes himself to speak and utters what he knows will be the WRONG thing to say, he’ll regret it instantly. So he takes a moment to think, ignoring any lingering fear that this will also put Kenta off, too. 

                Normalcy has never exactly been an OPTION for Saburo. Honing in on any sort of skill ( natural or otherwise, enjoyment has never mattered ) and becoming the best in one’s field has always been the main priority in his family, his schedule filled day and night with efforts to rise to the top in something he doesn’t even particularly LIKE. It’s gotten him places, he can’t really deny that— he wouldn’t be at Hope’s Peak without it— but that doesn’t fully quiet underlying wishes to choose his own path sometimes. That isn’t possible, though. 

   “In my experience, rarely anyone.” He shakes his head, finally looking towards Kenta. “Isn’t that why most of us are here? They don’t admit normal people into Hope’s Peak, and the ones they do, well... they don’t seem like they want to be that way, either. Being normal isn’t allowed when you’re always striving for talent, so it doesn’t make sense if someone here insults you for it. They aren’t normal, either.”

KENTA HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE FORWARD TYPE— that doesn't surprise Saburo anymore... in a sense. He would say it's in the same vein as expecting their chaos, the knowledge that something is going to happen is negated by the unpredictability of it all. Just as that, Saburo can tell himself their flirtatious remarks or actions will happen all he wants ( he invites them! They are together after all— Kenta just knows he's easily teased ). The lack of surprise will do nothing to lessen Saburo's reactions.

So when Kenta takes his hand to greet him for their date, gingerly lifting it to their lips to place a gentle kiss upon his knuckles, Saburo already feels himself melt. Such a simple gesture, yet it makes his heart jump with anticipation anyway— something hidden within the gentleness is what tugs at his heartstrings, never before Kenta had he been handled with so much consideration, given the choice to surround himself with someone who makes him feel alive. "Ah— hello to you too," He responds with softened gaze and a pull of a smile on his lips ( a lighthearted comment back doesn't even make him nervous about saying the right thing anymore... ). "I've... been looking forward to seeing you today."

HE DOESN'T WANT TO ANSWER, glancing downwards as if the action might make him smaller, less noticeable. He doesn't have answers for a lot of things about himself, but Saburo does know this. "Most of them, I suppose. Being a musician... it was never my passion, but it brought success, so that's what I decided to do." Though he leaves out the part that shows it was never a DECISION at all, choice was never one of the factors, Saburo's life is not to be dictated by himself, his family made it clear from the beginning, that is how things have always been. "I do it... because it satisfies my family... the last thing I want to do is disappoint anyone. I... think about that a lot, outside of playing as well... I don't... I'm not going to ask anyone for reassurance outright, but I do want to avoid any missteps in the first place..."

SHE DOESN'T KNOW THE HALF OF IT, yet her presence and words are slightly calming. Saburo appreciates that, at least. He shouldn't— CANNOT— even consider telling her the real reasons. Admitting that the vision adorned front and center to his chest isn't quite a vision at all, that it's all a ruse to please the forces that make him endure every ounce of pain the delusion puts him through... it's too defiant to ever end well. If it ever got back to his family that Saburo told a soul... he doesn't want to find out what would happen. But he's running out of excuses for the air stolen from his lungs, the coughing fits that dare to interrupt performances, the blood choked up in secret.

Deidre doesn't know any of that.

"I don't know if I've ever played my cards right..." It would be more accurate to say Saburo has never played his own cards, really. "I... guess I wish it was easier to know what the right way is... I don't know a thing about myself." He's spoken too much already, she was trying to comfort him and he's ruining it by spiraling further. A breath, and he smiles— a last ditch effort to conceal what he's admitted, yes, but nothing about it is fake, he really does appreciate Deidre's words. "Thank you, though. That is— ah... comforting to say. I... I'll keep it mind, for when I can try." He hopes he does get the chance...

   SABURO DOESN’T SEE ANYTHING NOTABLE ABOUT THE MACHINE itself, that is until Daichi points out a detail that he WOULDN’T have thought about— brows furrow with sudden confusion, and although he doesn’t appear overwhelmingly appalled, Saburo quickly questions WHY they would have jumped to that sort of conclusion. “Well— strong enough or not, why WOULD anyone try and do that? That... only seems like it might hurt someone, or worse. I’m... sure it’s just an observation! But still...”
