Sam in s8 being like “I get it now Dean. It’s not that you don’t trust me, it’s that you can only trust yourself” re: the trials is equally hilarious and really sad tbh. Like, Dean fully laid it out for Sam with some of the best clear communication skills they’ve exhibited up until this point and SAM MAKES IT ABOUT HIMSELF????

Dean literally was like “hey, I’m gonna do this cause I want to fucking die anyways, and you somehow see a life after hunting and I don’t! And I want that for you! So I’m gonna do these trials and save the world and maybe my life will mean something if I do that, and then you’re gonna go live that dope ass life you think is possible.” And Sam just goes “oh what so you don’t tRUST ME?!” As if 1) this was about him at all and 2) he hasn’t given Dean a reason in the past year to question how much Sam actually cares about him. This man really saw dean trying to do some self-destructive bullshit and went “nope, sorry, I’M the main character. I am the center of attention.”

AND DEAN JUST LETS HIM MAKE HIMSELF INTO A MARTYR AGAINST HIS BETTER JUDGMENT WHILE SAM CONSTANTLY GIVES HIM SHIT FOR NOT WANTING SAM TO DO THE TRIALS LIKE THATS SOMEHOW A BAD THING????? It’s a good thing I am not in the spn universe because I would’ve smacked Sam every time he opened his big rude mouth like smfh, you think you get to make a dumb ass decision and then be mean to your brother because you regret it?! Fuck that, go to therapy you weirdo, and apologize to your brother.

(I’m listening to the motw podcast and they keep talking about how dean’s the emotionally broken one and so does fandom as a whole but like, idk man, Dean’s pretty good at not taking his own bullshit out on other people like 80% of the time when he’s not going through a Perpetual Big Trauma. Sam stubs his toe and is like “damn it Dean why did you put that weapons bag there, god you’re such an asshole” as if he didn’t carry that bag in himself. He do be broken but he’s never stopped to look past John’s inflicted trauma to work on what’s wrong with him just in general lmao)

I keep waffling back and forth the further I get in the show between “Sam truly just doesn’t know anything about Dean as a person” and “Sam’s just doing this because he knows Dean well enough to know that it will crush him.” And I’m not sure where that ven diagram middle part meets, but I think Sam exists somewhere in there at least up until almost s9.

Of course, there’s always the whole thing of Sam projects all his trauma and inner turmoil onto others (usually Dean) and takes it out on them, but fandom is never ready to talk about that.
