"Stay Close to Me" Program Technical Difficulty
While four quads in one program is beyond impressive, it’s no longer unknown; Boyang Jin became the first skater to land four quads in one program last season. Jin’s program included a record-breaking quad lutz-triple toe loop combination, a quad salchow, and two quad toe loops.
Tumblr media
Yuzuru Hanyu, who may have served as inspiration for Katsuki Yuuri, is currently performing a free skate program with four quads as well. Hanyu has performed both the quad toe loop and quad salchow consistently, and was the first person to successfully land a quad loop in competition earlier this year.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, Viktor’s free program is still extremely technically difficult and would be record-breaking in that he performs four different quads in his free skate program. The quad loop is the only ratified quadruple jump which Viktor does not perform in his program, likely because the Yuri!!! on Ice storyboards would have been drawn before its ratification. In other words, the characters in Yuri!!! on Ice are in fact making history – but not at the unreasonable rate at which they first appear to be. The creators of the anime deserve credit for incorporating current events in the figure skating world into the storyline so well.

Something that I really haven’t seen addressed in the YOI fandom is the age differences between the characters, and I think that’s something that plays an important role in the character dynamics.
Of course, the star pair of this show is Victor and Yuuri, both of whom are adults males. This show has thus far placed a strong emphasis on Yuuri’s initial innocence, and the development of his ‘Eros’ through his growing relationship and understanding of love. However, the bottom line is that he and Victor are both adults developing a mature relationship, however new and innocent it may be.
When looking at the show as a whole, there is more than a 10 year age difference between some of the skaters. There are a variety of acts including those which are innocent, sexual, and seductive. Among all this, I feel as though the actual numbers get lost in the mix. Minami, portrayed as cute and childlike and innocent, is actually 17 years old, while Yurio, portrayed as both moody and ruthless, is 15 years old. Yuuri, despite his innocence in his relational ventures, is actually 23 years old.
On the skating rink, they are all regarded as equals when it comes to judging their capabilities and interpretations. At the same time, they’re drastically different. Many posts have been making fun of how grumpy Yurio seems all the time, and his general angst seems to be a point of humor. I think that when viewing him as a world-class skater the audience has forgotten that he is an emotional teenager. Of course he stormed out after he lost, and was barely able to compose himself after being upset; he’s still growing and discovering exactly what emotions he feels and how to handle them.
At 15 years old, Yurio is competing for his country against skaters who are 27 and regarded as some of the best in the world. At 15 years old, he is willing to work himself until he breaks just to gain some recognition against people with a decade more of experience. His emotions aren’t drastic and laughable; they’re tangibly real for a boy of 15 who just won’t stop fighting to get better. He’s being deprived of a normal childhood, and has been pushed in preparation for his skating career. Every waking moment seems to be spent practicing, and that poor boy wants to believe that he’s mature, and that he fits in with the 20+ skaters, but he hasn’t quite reached their level in his emotional maturity.
Similarly, some of the older teens/young adults (such as Leo and Guang-Hong) are behaving as expected of that age group (especially in their respective cultures). They casually use social media as an outlet and expression point, and are exploring emotional maturity in their skating and personal lives. This contrasts very readily with skaters such as Georgi, at 27, who are the center of mature pieces and have skating that reflects such life experience.
The characters aren’t quirky or emotionally unusual- most of them are actually staying quite true to their age group and range of experience. It seems that so many people are forgetting this, because the traditional sports anime is set in a school in which everyone is approximately the same age. YOI, however, is a giant mixing pot of ages and nationalities, which some of these theories and analyzations should start taking advantage of to really delve deeper into the characters and their personalities.
(This is by no means meant to be a serious and in depth analyzation. I’m a casual fan who noticed people making fun of Yurio’s moodiness. I think they forgot that just because Victor is 27 and Yuuri is 23 that some characters are far younger and emotionally different.)
