A Game of Thrones - George RR Martin : Prologue, Bran I, Catelyn I
This is one of my favorite series of fantasy novels, ever. It's well-written, masterfully plotted... basically all the things that you've heard about George RR Martin's series is true. That said, there are some problematic things about the series, though moreso in the show than in the novels.
Let's get started, shall we?
Prologue
The prologue was really hard for me to get through the first time I read this book. While it is good writing, it also follows a pretty good form of Waymar Royce being an asshole and asking Gared, his senior officer of the Night's Watch, questions about the dead wildlings he saw. I wish we'd seen the scene through Gerad's own eyes instead of getting it in the form of a Q&A like this. Also, it does set the tone for the novels to come, but the White Walkers don't show up again until later. It seems stand-alone and a bit out of place with the first half of the novel.
As an aspiring writer, I probably would have triple-thought this chapter until I ended up ending a part or something with it. I suppose that's why GRRM is a famous author and I am not.
In any case, it does set up some intrigue and puts a sense of foreboding over the series for the first handful of chapters. The appearance of the White Walkers here is utterly terrifying (not that they aren't terrifying at any turn), and it does a good point of burning the image into our mind. In terms of narrative, this does what it is meant to; later, when the White Walkers become a threat, we wouldn't have really understood it if not for the prologue.
In any case, Walker!Waymar kills Will and Gared runs off. He'll make an appearance in the next chapter, and becomes our ties to the Starks of Winterfell.
Bran I
The strange weather of Westeros is never really explained, is it? We all just accept it, but I'd be interested to know the depth of what it actually means to be winter or summer. Because apparently, summer has lasted nine years at this point according to Bran (who is seven). So I'm wondering if it's nine solid years of summer? Or just really mild winters thrown in there? Inquiring minds want to know. Also it's a bit silly that I care so much.
So Bran is witnesses his father, Eddard (Ned) Stark, deliver punishment to a deserter of the Night's Watch. It's Gared, in case that wasn't clear. His Valyrian steel sword named Ice is used to execute the man, and he tells Bran all about their proud northern heritage and how he believes that the man who passes the sentence should also carry it out.
Also, if you're ever in doubt that Theon is a dick, don't be. This is but the first sign of his immense assholishness.
Anyway, Ned is wise, and he and Bran ride to catch up with Bran's brother Robb, his bastard brother Jon Snow, and Theon. They've found a dead direwolf. Apparently direwolves are the size of ponies, and this one has puppies. She's dead, of course, and all the men are scared because she was gored by an antler.
We don't know it at this point, but the direwolf is the symbol of House Stark, and the direwolf here has been gored by the antler of a stag, which is the sigil of House Baratheon. We'll learn more about them later, but it's worth noting that some heavy-duty foreshadowing is going on in this scene.
There are five puppies initially, enough for each of Ned's trueborn children. He agrees to let them keep them only because it is the symbol of their house. As they are riding away, Jon Snow hears whimpering, and finds an albino pup that has crawled away from the others. He keeps it for himself.
So all the Starks now have new, giant wolves as pets. That's pretty metal. Plus the direwolf cast acts as the best supporting characters in this entire series, in my opinion.
Catelyn I
I like that the Stark words are 'Winter is Coming', don't get me wrong. It's very fitting. However, it makes it extremely difficult to comment about the ending of autumn without sounding ominous.
Catelyn is a Tully originally, but now she is a Stark: Ned's wife and the mother of five of his children. The religion in this novel is very interesting, to say the least; of all their problems, religion seems to be the least of them. The Northerners keep their Old Gods and the rest of Westeros keeps their Seven, and then later... well, suffice it to say that Westeros doesn't share the same trend that our real world does where so many wars are fought over religion.
Also, Ned might want to rethink his ideas that the Others have been gone for eight thousand years. He's woefully underprepared for what's really going on beyond the Wall.
Catelyn goes into the Godswood, the place of worship for the people that keep to the Old Gods, to tell Ned that Jon Arryn is dead. They have some history, Ned and Jon Arryn (so much that he named his bastard son after him, apparently), but he has another connection; Jon Arryn was married to Catelyn's sister Lysa. More, the king (Robert Baratheon) is riding to Winterfell for Ned.
He's bringing with him his wife, Cersei Lannister, both of Cersei's brothers, and the two princes and princess. There is already a grudge between the Lannisters and the Starks, and this is chapter two of the whole series. This bodes well.

My life is unrecognisable compared to what it was - 'Game of Thrones' has opened doors that were never there before. But it can be dangerous to see it in those terms, I think. It's best to take it as it comes and work as hard as you can, and hopefully the other things fall into place.
