so I am have entirely too much time on my hands at work tonight and am trying to work on a BBKaz playlist spanning PW-era through Roasty Toasty BB-Q. Have any good suggestions? (Note: no VKaz. that's a separate playlist. I... may have too many playlists...)

I basically listened to nothing but Led Zeppelin there are tons of great Led Zeppelin songs and the Beatles but I don’t know what your music tastes are sweet sweet anon.

All riiiight, let’s do this!

How I entered/learned about the said game/show/movie/etc of that fandom

So back in the day when it first came out, MGS was HUGE. Totally unavoidable, on all the best game of the year lists, one of the biggest titles for the console, all that jazz. At the time my gaming interests were intense but very narrow. I’d barely give time of day to anything that wasn’t an RPG. On top of that, I was a contrary dumbass who got hype aversion something fierce, and the funny thing is, for as omnipresent as it was, you could know of it without actually knowing anything about it, so, honest to god, I thought it was some grey dull Tom Clancy-esque straight-faced military thing. So I was really, really slow to give it a chance. 

And then I was in a duct and a guy was calling to talk to me about field mice, and I got the feeling I had been very wrong.

Fave character

Ahh, that’s hard! Liquid’s up there, and so’s Kaz, and Otacon, and random weirdos like The Pain, and Cecile for the total lack of fucks she gives, but it may have to be good old Solid. Can I count the twin Snakes together?

Least fave character

There’s no really horrible ones, but there’s ones like the Beauties who had a lot of potential that never really went anywhere, or Grey Fox, who just isn’t very interesting no matter how the games try. I’m never able to scare up any interest in childhood friend/old buddy characters, because it always feels like it’s assumed we care about them because we’ve been informed we’re supposed to. It doesn’t really work to try to make the audience care when all the reasons the other character cares are offscreen in backstory. Anyway that’s what the cyborg ninja has in common with Gale from the Hunger Games. 

Oh, and Skullface, who was a hodgepodge of okay ideas with some really, really terrible ones. I may have shot him while yelling “TO THE HELL FOR MEDIOCRE ANTAGONISTS!” 

OTP(s)

Snake/Otacon’s the classic, but I also love VKaz, and really I’ll read just about anything.

Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get

BB/V, maybe? Though I’m not sure how popular that is. It’s hard to find a way to get them together in the same place, or even thinking about each other, without demystifying it or defusing the cool parts of them being a double of each other, or making V weaker and less interesting than he really is. I sure can’t think of any, though I’ve been tempted to give it a shot just for experiment’s sake. 

Fave thing about the fandom

That it’s still going, for one thing! You can pachinko the series to death, Konami, but you can’t get rid of us! Also I love when people get weird and creative with the material, like with how ridiculously great Yellowcake is. 

The most despised thing

Alt-right types with MGS icons. Come on, man, how do you miss the point that hard? 

If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be.

Besides, you know, letting MGSV be finished and not hurriedly welded together in a dark tunnel somewhere, for as much as I love Liquid, even if Kingdom of the Flies had made it in (which I’m honestly glad it didn’t), Eli’s role really didn’t add enough to V to be worth the weird mangling of backstory and all the retconning it took to put him in. 

Also, either let Quiet and the other Skull snipers dress less stupid, or make the male Skulls dress more stupid. These half measures are bullshit!

You’re right. I really do need to lighten up, but VKaz is sad too. SOFT but sad. I guess Kaz as a character just makes me.. Sad. I’ll try to be less sad. 

Venom is quiet. That’s the first thing Kaz notices as soon as he out of the Medical wing of motherbase. As soon as hes not fighting off an infection and convincing med staff he’s fine to at least field radio transmissions. Venom is quiet. He’s gentle. There’s something off about Kaz him that he can’t pin down. There’s no point in asking Ocelot, every word out of his mouth is a lie and he makes a crummy partner because most of the time he’s only worried about himself and his own needs.  Snake had been human, most of the time. Their time at MSF had taught him that. People may have seen him as a legend, or a monster, or a war machine, but it was hard to think that when someone spares your life and tells you you’re worth something. But Venom is barely human. His face is carefully trained into something neutral at all times. Everything is a questions. Every decision is fielded through Kaz, who is the commander but that’s not how MSF had ever been

“Kaz what do you think?” “Kaz what should we do?” “Kaz do you need help?”

A stark contrast to the way he had been before. He has a huge quiet presence and more than once Kaz had caught him just staring at the ocean like hes lost in thought but there’s something in his eyes that’s wrong. 

“Boss? Snake? Are you okay?” He asked.

Snake turned to him, the bit of shrapnel cast a strange shadow over the metal deck. He looked Kaz over like he didn’t know what to say. “I dont know. Am I? Help me Kaz.”  

Being on Motherbase is like being in an alternate reality before Snake woke up. The way the soldiers talk about Big Boss like he isn’t even real in that nine year gap when he’s in a coma leaves a bad taste in Kaz’s mouth. He’s trying to train people and rebuild and make them money and a reputation but they’re too busy talking. The recruits look at Ocelot like he’s the sun, because he warps their minds to think whatever he wants. And Kaz, before he got torn apart and lost any and all respect he might have, before he got taken, they used to ask him what Costa Rica was like. Used to ask him what the boss was like and he would say. “Human.I don’t know. My friend. A real interesting guy y’know?”

When Snake finally woke up Kaz was in some bombed out village somewhere and he had no idea how much time had passed. Not until blearily he had been aware of someone asking in the most sincere tone if he was okay. A red prosthetic brushed his cheek and his eyes are shielded blissfully from the bright sun. Something is wrong with the man’s voice but he’s lost so much blood does it really matter. This is for all intents and purposes Snake and he’s finally here to pull him out. He carries him into the desert and carefully sets him in the helicopter, balling up some blankets to rest his pounding head on. Something is off but he can’t pin it down.

And now he hides out in his office fielding reports and crunching numbers. Running the radio and sending people here and there to keep everything running. The 80′s are very different from the 70′s and war has changed. 

The radio buzzes and Kaz clicks it on and slips the headset over his ears. “This is Miller, go ahead.”

“It’s Snake. The stars are bright out here Kaz. You sound tired why are you still working?”

He lets out an exasperated breath and checked his watch. “Did you actually need something? How late is? Shouldn’t you be, I don’t know sleeping or something?”

A soft laugh followed by equally quiet sarcasm. “How late is it there? Can you tell me about Costa Rica? I’m lonely and DD makes a lousy conversationalist.” His voice comes through the headset, something reminds him of the way they used to talk all the time over the radio in the jungle. “I wanna talk to you.”

Kaz takes off his glasses and rubs at his eyes. It is late but Snake sounds so soft. He feels his missing arm burn but smiles. “Yeah I can.”
