Mulerider Softball Reloaded as Fall Practice Gets Underway
Source: https://muleriderathletics.com/news/2021/9/28/mulerider-softball-reloaded-as-fall-practice-gets-underway.aspx
MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Nationally-prominent Southern Arkansas Softball's 2022 National Championship quest has begun as fall practice opened up for eighth-year head coach Jason Anderson's Muleriders which reloaded with some of the country's top talent. It is a new look squad for Anderson who has led the program to its most successful run to date which includes back-to-back-to-back Great American Conference regular season titles, five-straight trips to the NCAA Central Region Tournament and a pair of World Series appearances which saw SAU finish in the top four nationally both times. Despite the newness of roster, the program's goals remain the same: chasing that elusive national championship. Seven junior college transfers and six four-year transfers, including four from the Division I ranks, make up the newest crop of talent that has been re-harvested in Magnolia. "I am so excited about these transfers we were able to bring in to add to our great group of early signees and returners," noted Anderson. "This group has been working together since we got back this fall, and as we have now moved into team practice I am really seeing what a special group we have." Sabrina Anguiano Riverside, Calif. | SS/UT | Rogers State University >>> Anguiano joins Anderson's squad after playing in 46 games for MIAA-foe Rogers State which won 34 games and advanced to the league's tournament title game. This past season, Anguiano recorded 37 hits, five doubles and four homeruns, while scoring 27 runs. Defensively, she recorded 66 assists and 56 putouts. The California native was named the MIAA Hitter of the Week on May 4 and was a member of the MIAA Softball Honor Roll. Brianna Everett Paragould, Ark. | C/UT | Three Rivers College >>> Everett, who earned first team All-MCCAC and first team all-region honors at Three Rivers College, hit .429 and slugged .776 in 50 games for the Raiders this past spring. The Arkansas native hit 16 home runs and 11 doubles, totaled 74 RBI and scored 39 runs. Defensively, Everett recorded 87 putouts and 37 assists. Uchenna Jong Loy Amsterdam, Netherlands | IF | Bossier Parish CC >>> The 2021 NJCAA Region XIV Player of the Year, Jong Loy brings a lot of power to Magnolia. An All-Louisiana Collegiate Softball Team selection this past spring, the Amsterdam native hit .521 with 27 home runs and 84 RBI as she helped lead BPCC to a 45-7 record overall and a deep run in the Region IV East Tournament.   Dylann Kaderka Keller, Texas | RHP | Grayson College >>> Behind an NJCAA-leading 31 wins, Dylann Kaderka earned NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year honors as well as 2021 NJCAA Softball World Series Most Outstanding Pitcher recognition following the spring campaign at Grayson College. Kaderka fanned 212 batters and generated a 2.28 ERA in 202.0 innings pitched. She received All-America First-Team honors from both the NJCAA and NFCA, was an all-region and all-conference performer in addition to be named the NTJCAC Pitcher of the Year. Gracie King Winnsboro, La. | INF | LSU-Eunice >>> King comes to Magnolia after two years at LSU-Eunice. In 2021, she hit .344 with 56 hits, including a dozen home runs to go along with a team-leading 55 RBI. King played in all 56 games making 48 starts and recorded a team-leading 114 total bases. Along with 27 walks and six hit-by-pitch, the run-producing bat orchestrated a 1.151 OPS and helped the Bengals win 34 games last spring. Sara Mayes Lufkin, Texas | C/UT | Angelina College/Trinity Valley CC >>> A two-year player at Angelina College, Mayes made the move to Trinity Valley after AC canceled sports this past spring. A power hitter, Mayes hit .500 with 38 hits including eight home runs and 34 RBI in 25 games for the Cardinals. She struck out just three times in 91 plate appearances and totaled 66 bases with 25 runs scored. In her final year at AC, Mayes helped send the Lady Roadrunners to the NJCAA DI World Series title game with a game-tying two-run home run, one of 11 blasts that season, in AC's 15-13 win over Central Florida. Jade Miller Plano, Texas | OF | Utah Valley >>> Miller transfers to SAU after a year and a half of action at Utah Valley of the Western Athletic Conference. In 61 games for the Wolverines, Miller hit .322 with 59 hits which includes a dozen doubles, three triples and a home run. She scored 34 runs and registered 19 RBI. Miller's previous stops include Arkansas, UDallas where she set the single-season hit record with 61 as a freshman, and Grayson College where she earned NJCAA first-team All-American honors in 2019 after hitting .473 to go along with 13 doubles, 18 home runs, 59 RBIs, 67 runs, and 18 stolen bases. She recorded 39 hits, 19 RBI and scored 13 runs. Defensively, she registered 224 putouts with 142 assists. Additionally, she tossed 2.0 in the circle for the Cards this past spring as she made the first two pitching appearances of her collegiate career. Kiana Pogroszewski Ephraim, Utah | RHP | Bossier Parish CC >>> A second-team NJCAA Region XIV East All-Conference selection this past spring, Pogroszewski posted a 17-0 record for BPCC in 22 starts totaling 105.0 innings pitched. She carried a 2.60 ERA as a sophomore and tossed ten complete games with 96 total strikeouts. Baylie Thornhill Baton Rouge, La. | RHP | LSU/Ohio >>> A three-time all-district performer at St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, Thornhill made stops at South Alabama, LSU and Ohio before landing in Magnolia. The right-hander, in her final year for the Bobcats in 2020, appeared in 14 games with eight starts in the circle where she recorded three complete games, two saves and picked up a win in 55.1 innings pitched. She fanned 36 and allowed only eight hits. Destiny Vasquez Norwalk, Calif. | RHP/UT | Lee University >>> A two-time California Junior College Pitcher of the Year, Vasquez earned All-America honors while at Cypress College in 2017. Two years later, she was named Orange Empire Conference MVP and garnered all-state honors at Fullerton College. Vasquez transferred to Division II Lee University of the Gulf South Conference and in a shortened 2020 season, she won six games, struck out 76 batters, and owned a 2.10 ERA in 70.0 innings pitched. Sydney Ward Paris, Ark. | RHP | Crowder College >>> As a sophomore at Crowder College, Ward posted an 11-1 record with the fourth-most strikeouts in all of junior college softball with 237. She owned an 11.9 K/7 rating, posted a 1.26 ERA and tossed 11 complete games in 139.1 innings of work. Ward earned All-Region XVI first-team honors and was named to the Region XVI All-Tournament team following the Roughriders' runner-up performance in the tournament. Ward helped Crowder post a 47-8 record in 2021. Anderson added, "There is so much talent top to bottom and the team chemistry is outstanding. We will continue to grind this fall and do what we know it takes to continue to compete at a National Level…Team 24 will be ready to continue the tradition of winning that is synonymous with Mulerider Softball."

In every Hollywood era, there’s no shortage of headline-making romances. From Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall’s legendary passion, to the birth of Brangelina on the set of an action flick, these are the most scandalous love affairs in entertainment history.
1988’s Dangerous Liaisons may have been the film that forever typecast John Malkovich as a conniving villain, and during production, there were some real-life parallels going on behind the scenes. While Malkovich’s character was trying to seduce Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, the two actors began an affair that would cause the end of Malkovich’s marriage to Glenne Headly. After their split, Headly apparently called Malkovich, quote, “the root of all evil.”
Although Malkovich and Pfeiffer’s affair ended shortly after it started, it was a miracle it even began, according to Malkovich. As he later told Rolling Stone,
“It’s hard to believe Michelle Pfeiffer ever said hello to me. Not that she’s not memorable, God knows. But I sort of blocked it out. What I’m trying to say is, when I think of the other person, I don’t think of me as involved with them. They’re uncorrupted by me. As if they were never troubled by my existence.”

Kitchen Islands With Beds? Indoor Yards? 4 Hot New Home Trends Too Good to Be True
iStock; realtor.com
If you’re a homeowner who takes pride in staying on top of interior design trends, you’ve no doubt been busy lately. High-end kitchen island? Check. Living wall in the living room? Sure thing! And you’ve most certainly got a Chip and Joanna Gaines-inspired farmhouse sink or shiplap lurking somewhere, too.
Sorry to break it to you … but those trends are très passé. The rest of the world has moved on, and they’re decking out their homes with way hipper stuff than that.
Relax, your friends at realtor.com are here to help! Just feast your eyes on four of the hottest, hippest home trends we’ve seen lately.
Kitchen islands with beds Kitchen island with bed
iStock; realtor.com
Kitchen islands have been getting bigger and more souped up than ever. This so-called “hub of the home” can now incorporate sinks, ovens, breakfast bars, charging stations, and far more. But let’s be honest here: All that kitchen multitasking can leave home chefs feeling pooped. And alas, if there’s one thing kitchen islands lack, it’s a place to lay your head, much less your whole body.
But that’s about to change with the kitchen island’s newest accoutrement: a sleeping bunk!
That’s right, thanks to a stowaway mattress incorporated just underneath the counter, now you can take a power nap as you wait for your pasta water to boil. You can lounge longitudinally while you slice and dice onions. Guests who hover around your island can now really kick back with that glass of merlot, or just crash for the night if they’ve had one too many.
This may explain why this home feature has popped up in the kitchens of party-hard celebs including David Hasselhoff, who says, “In the past, I had to choose between staving off hangovers with sleep or a bacon cheeseburger. But now, I can do both at once!”
Indoor yards Fun for the whole family!
iStock; realtor.com
For years, we’ve all been bringing the indoors outside, with outdoor kitchens and fully decked al fresco living spaces. So get ready to flip the script. Are you wishing you could enjoy the great outdoors from the comfort of your couch? Well, now you can, by rigging up your home with an indoor yard. In-floor irrigation systems now enable homeowners to go beyond a few potted plants and have wall-to-wall grass beneath their feet—all without the hassles of inclement weather, nosy neighbors, mosquitoes, or other outdoor annoyances.
Due to the added privacy, indoor yards have really taken off with celebs, including Angelina Jolie (“It’s so natural and earthy”) and even Barack Obama, whose Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Bo, “were confused at first,” he admits. “Although these indoor lawns are rigged with drainage systems so canines can relieve themselves inside, I had to ‘house train’ them again, only in reverse. They eventually caught on, particularly once I installed a few bushes.”
Wall-to-wall wallpaper Wallpaper wall-to-wall
Getty Images
From florals and metallics to textures, the wallpaper trend is truly taking over. But get ready for the next level.
Although many choose to paper an accent wall, this hot new trend sees paper covering not only the traditional four walls, but also the ceiling, floor, furniture … sometimes even pets and family members!
Celeb fans include Kim Kardashian West—who might like to bare all when it comes to her wardrobe, but wants her walls completely covered at home. Kicking hubby Kanye’s minimalist style to the curb, the reality star supposedly has designers scrambling to order rolls upon rolls to paper the 15,700-square-foot Los Angeles estate she and Kanye bought for $20 million in 2014.Reportedly, their kids, North, Saint, and Chicago, have pajamas and bedspreads that match the wallpaper in their rooms.
“It can be a bit dizzying sometimes, and it’s frankly even hard to find them now,” Kardashian West admits. “But it’s worth it. Now I never have to ask, ‘Does this go with that?’ ever again.”
Farmhouse furniture straight from the barn Hay, ya!
iStock; realtor.com
The modern farmhouse style has been all the rage since Chip and Joanna Gaines‘ show “Fixer Upper” hit the airwaves and developed a devoted following. They have their own home line at Magnolia, Target … yet some think those aren’t quite farmhouse enough.
Enter their newest venture: real farmhouse furniture, straight from the barn to you! Think: hay bale coffee tables. Side table butter churns. Manger beds. Of course, Chip and Jo have incorporated these elements into their own home too. Just ask Chip: “We swapped our regular alarm clocks for a rooster. Since there’s no snooze button, he really gets us up!”
So if you love living on the very cutting edge of design, you’re probably eager to incorporate these into your home. But before you do that, maybe check the date on this article first.

Refuge
Description: Molly escapes a hoard of attacking vampires and finds itself in the care of a kindly priest, but something seems off about him. Written for JanAUary prompt #9 - Vampires. Setting: Vampire Priest AU Ships: Molly x Wolfwood (Trimax) Warnings: Descriptions of death, blood, pain, and injuries Dividers
Tumblr media
Molly felt like its legs were about to give out, and if not its legs then its lungs. A burning pain radiated through Molly's calves, chest, and back. It was freezing cold, its nose tingling, its fingers starting to feel numb. How long had it been running, and how much longer could it keep running?
Several hours earlier, Molly had set out with a group of other refugees from a nearby town, headed on their way to May City. It was a long journey, especially on foot, but the guide had insisted it would be smooth sailing. And for awhile, it seemed like it was, but of course, the fates could turn on a dime. One misstep into the wrong place, one conversation that gets a little too loud, one light a little too bright, shined in the wrong place- and you're caught.
Vampires were an ever lingering threat, one that you had to accept if you planned to leave the safety of whatever small, confined community of survivors you had found yourself in. They were stronger, faster, and quieter than humans could ever hope to be. By the time you caught your first glimpse of one, they'd probably already been stalking you for an hour. By the time you tried to make a move, their claws and teeth were sunk into your flesh. By the time you tried to cry out for help, it would be useless, because it would already have torn your throat out.
They must have been being hunted tonight- as someone in the group had raised their flashlight up to scan the tree line, they had lit up the face of a vampire. Pale skin with black veins showing, milky white eyes without pupils or irises. Soon they could see that behind that one was another, and another behind that. The group was set upon within seconds by what seemed like hundreds of them. Somehow in the chaos of it all, Molly had managed to escape the screaming crowd mostly unharmed. Sure, Molly had felt a stinging pain in its calf and shoulder as it scrambled to get off the ground, but there was no way it was stopping now to inspect itself for wounds. There was no way it was stopping at all until it found somewhere it could hide.
Now it feared it may never find that place to hide. In its panic, Molly had dropped its flashlight and it couldn't see a thing. Not that it would've helped much anyway, the poor thing didn't know this area at all, it had been entirely relying entirely on its guide, who was now likely mush in a vampire's stomach. Even if it were broad daylight, it wasn't sure it would be able to navigate itself to safety. Molly felt ready to cry at the thought of that, how it would almost certainly never seen the daylight again. It missed the feeling of the warm sun on its back, the comfort that being outside in nature had used to bring. The last time Molly, or anyone for that matter, had seen the sun had been months ago now. How did everything go so wrong so fast?
Just when it was starting to feel like crumpling to the ground and accepting its fate, a light in the distance caught Molly's eye. Dim, weak, barely there at all- but just bright enough for Molly to see it. Maybe a candle? Small as it was, to Molly it was like a beaming lighthouse, guiding it safely to shore. A beacon, a beacon of hope. Vampires with their night vision had no use for candles, this meant there must be a safe house ahead.
Molly pushed forward, ignoring the ache in its legs, the burning in its lungs, and the throbbing sting of its injuries. Everything would be okay once it reached that light, that's what it kept telling itself. As it got closer and the building became more clear, Molly could make out a big, white cross above the door. A church. Seeing a church out here was like- well- it was like a miracle. Molly had been told time and time again, that vampires cannot even set foot on hallowed ground.
The church sat at the bottom of a steep incline, Molly nearly toppled over several times in its hurry to reach the base of the slope, scrambling on its hands and knees pathetically by then end but thankfully it managed to reach the door in one piece. It tried to pull at the handle- locked.
It began frantically pounding its fists against the wood, hard enough it was sure it would leave bruises, "Hello? Is anyone there!? I- I need help!"
Molly heard creaking, hurried footsteps, and the sound of the lock clicking on the other side, it sighed it relief as the door cracked open and warm light spilled out into the night. There stood before it a tall, tan priest with dark hair and brown eyes. He looked as if he were about to speak, but he froze before he could, his expression darkening as he stared past Molly into the darkness from which it had come. Pressing a hand to its back, the priest quickly but gently ushered Molly inside the building, closing and locking the door behind it.
Molly immediately turned around to face him, tears finally erupting and rolling down its cheeks, as they had been threatening to do for who knows how long, "Oh, thank you, Father, thank you so much! I was- they- we were-"
He shushed Molly and laid his hand gently on its shoulder, "Hey now, why don't ya sit down and catch yer breath before ya go tryin' to tell me what happened, alright?"
Molly nodded, dropping its exhausted form onto the closest pew, "Do you, uh- could I have some water, please?"
"Of course. Wait right here, I'll go get ya some." He nodded and started toward the back of the building.
"Thank you, Father."
"It's no problem. Now make yerself comfortable, I'll be right back." He looked back for a moment, a gentle smile on his lips, before continuing off to fetch Molly's water.
Molly liked him already. His presence was so comforting, his kind eyes, his voice- that deep Southern drawl that reminded Molly of the pastor at its church back home. If Molly was completely honest, it hadn't ever really been too fond of the Sunday service, the only real reason it attended had been because it had developed a little crush on the pastor. And now with everything gone to hell like it was, Molly found itself missing all of that. Being here made Molly feel some semblance of normalcy again, at least for a moment. And this man was quite handsome too- not that it mattered, he was a priest after all.
Soon the priest returned from the back of the church with a glass of water in hand, "Sorry, I don't got any ice."
"Oh that's alright, thank you, Father." Molly took the glass and within seconds had drank the whole thing down. It let out a relieved sigh, "My throat was so dry, it coulda been a British comedian."
The priest chuckled at Molly's little joke, but his cheerful demeanor quickly dropped as he turned his eyes to Molly's shoulder, "Yer hurt…"
Molly followed his gaze to the injury, wincing when it caught sight of it. What a fool Molly was, thinking it might just be a scratch. It was a jagged, horrid looking thing, blood and dirt caked all around it. It supposed the adrenaline was keeping it distracted before, but now that it had calmed down a bit, boy did that thing really hurt.
Molly looked back up to the priest, his eyes were still trained on the injury and he had an odd look on his face- nostrils flared, eyes raised, lips pressed together tightly. It was an emotion Molly couldn't quite discern, but it didn't look like a pleasant one.
"Have ya got anything for it, sir?"
He blinked and snapped out of whatever trance he had been in, smiling softly, "Sorry, I zoned out there. I was just… thinkin'. I've got a first aid kit 'round here somewhere."
Molly sat patiently as he located a bag that was sat on one of the pews and then rifled around in it until he found what he was searching for. He pulled a little white box from the bag and held it aloft triumphantly, "There we go!"
Molly scooted over in the pew to allow the man space next to it, he sat at Molly's side, the first aid kit in his lap.
"Alright let me get a good look at it…" He averted his eyes awkwardly, "I uh… I hate to ask this, but… I can see that it… seems to be goin' down yer back a good ways there…"
Molly's face flushed at his words, knowing exactly what he was asking without him even saying it, "Oh… ok, uh…"
It hesitated, of course there wasn't anything wrong with it, he was just treating a wound, but the idea of showing so much bare skin to a priest did seem… wrong? Molly sighed and shrugged off the feeling as best it could, it didn't want to risk an infection just because it was embarrassed.
It hissed in pain as it pulled the sleeve of its dress up from its skin and down off its shoulder, then reached to its back and gently tugged the elastic lined edge down to expose the damaged area of its back. Molly turned the other way to allow him access to the wound, jumping at the sudden feeling of the priest's fingers grazing the skin around the wound-he yanked his hand back quickly.
"Sorry, did I hurt ya?"
Molly shook its head, "No, sorry. Just… startled me."
"That's my bad, I shoulda warned ya first…"
Molly wasn't sure it would've helped all that much to give warning, it was on edge about this whole thing anyway. And his hands were so cold, strangely cold, unnaturally cold. They felt cold as ice almost.
"It's okay."
"I'm gonna clean this up now, is that alright?" He asked softly.
Molly nodded and took a deep breath, bracing itself for what was to come. It wasn't sure how bad the damage to its back was, but judging by its shoulder, it probably wouldn't matter how gentle he might be with it, this was going to hurt.
He confirmed this with his words of warning, "Sorry, this'll sting a bit."
"I know."
Despite that though, Molly couldn't help but let out a whimper against the feeling of him running something cold and wet, likely an alcohol swab, across the wound. It burned like hell.
"Hey, shhhh. It's alright. If it helps any…" He paused for a moment and pulled the swab away from Molly's skin, "With some of the blood cleaned up now, it looks better than I thought- I don't think its bad enough to need stitches."
"Well, that's a relief…"
Molly shuddered, a cold liquid ran down its back and shoulder and then a few swipes with a dry rag. It felt the priest hold what must be a large stick on bandage over the area and press it gently into place, repeating the process on its shoulder.
"Alright, it ain't the best, but it'll keep the wound from gettin' anything in it and messin' up yer healin'. Yer all patched up now." Molly felt his finger hook around the elastic of the dress and ease it back up over the now bandaged injury.
"Thank you, father." Molly sighed, pulling the sleeve back onto its shoulder and turning back to face him, its cheeks still red.
"Wolfwood."
"Hm?"
"That's my name. Figured ya oughta know it."
"Oh… Father Wolfwood then. Thank you."
"And… what can I call you?" He asked.
"Molly."
"Molly… that's a lovely name." He was silent for a moment, a dejected look on his face, like hearing that had saddened him for some reason. Molly didn't speak, they allowed him to sit with whatever it was he was feeling until he was ready.
"Ya got more injuries, Molly?" He finally spoke, but the way he said it was less like a question and more like a statement. Like he somehow knew the answer already.
"Yeah… uh… my leg… my leg is hurt too, I don't know how bad but…"
"Well, let's take a look at it."
Molly could feel the pain pulsing through its calf as it pulled it up to rest it on the pew. Wolfwood looked it over, he tried to hide it, but Molly could see him wince and clench his jaw at the sight of the blood. He squeezed his eyes shut and sucked in a sharp breath.
"Does it… look worse than the other one?" Molly asked, a bit scared by his reaction.
"There's definitely… more blood…" He mumbled, he had opened his eyes again, trailing the length of Molly's leg with them, "But- uh- but that… don't mean the injury's worse for sure. We'll… we'll clean it up and have a look, ok?" He rested his hand gently against Molly's ankle, he smiled like he was attempting to reassure it, but the smile felt forced.
Molly watched him closely as he started the process, his jaw was tight and his hands were shaky. He poured alcohol over a large cloth and ran it over the area the blood seemed to be coming from, wiping it away. Molly hissed and dug its fingernails into the fabric of its dress. Well, it definitely hurt more than the other one.
Somehow though, Wolfwood looked to be even more distressed than Molly was, like he was in pain too. It could hear his ragged breathing and watched his intent focus on the bloodied area. The best way Molly could describe his facial expression was to say that it looked like a combination of worry and anger. His grip on Molly's leg tightened, he pulled it in closer to him.
"Hey-"
Molly called out to him, but he didn't break his focus. He brought the cloth up the length of its leg. His grip tightened again. Then the cloth slid down. He squeezed harder again. And then again, and again, tighter and tighter each time he wiped away another streak of blood. He squeezed so tight it hurt, Molly yelped loudly like an injured dog, which finally called him back to reality.
"Oh, good lord- I- I'm so sorry! I don't know what came over me. My mind was… somewhere else. I'm sorry, are you alright?" He wiped away sweat that was beading on his brow with the back of his head.
Molly wasn't sure what to say, it didn't suppose he had hurt it on purpose but… this whole situation was only getting stranger by the second. Despite itself, despite the rational side of its mind screaming at it, it felt compelled to forgive him.
"It's alright." Came Molly's weak reply.
"I really am sorry… but I… it's all cleaned up now. It's not as bad as all that blood made it look. Think maybe some of that wasn't yers?" He smiled timidly and discarded the blood-soaked cloth into a plastic bag at his feet, then pulled a roll of gauze out from the first aid kit.
Molly nodded sadly, "Probably so… there were… there were others with me…"
"I see…" He carefully wrapped the gauze around Molly's leg and pinned it into place with a small metal clasp, "What happened?… If yer feelin' up to talkin' about it now?" He put everything back into the first aid kit and stashed it away in his bag again.
Molly took its leg down from the pew and folded its hands in its lap, "Well, we were… tryin' to make our way down to May City and… a whole hoard of vampires… attacked us…"
He looked shocked, eyes widening, "May City? That's awful long ways away, darlin'. You were goin' there on foot?"
"I was with a group… and… well I tried to tell them it was a bad idea. I- I told 'em May City's too far, we- we'd never make it without a vehicle but-"
"Did… anyone else from the group get away?"
"I… I don't think…" Tears were pouring from Molly's eyes again, "I don't know. I'm so sorry, I just don't know. I ran- I ran and I- and I kept running til I found you. I just- I just left 'em all there- they're all dead. They must be. I don't even know how I survived, I-"
"Hey, hey. It's alright now."
Molly tensed up as Wolfwood suddenly pulled it into a hug and rubbed its back softly, "I'm sorry that happened to ya, but yer okay now. Yer safe here."
Despite its better judgement once again telling them how strange this was- it had only met this man less than an hour ago- Molly couldn't help but relax into his touch. There was just something about him, even despite the peculiarities in his behavior, that made it feel so at ease- so at home. Molly rested its cheek against his shoulder and cried. It didn't know for how long, time felt wrapped and distorted, but it sat there and cried into his shoulder until it couldn't cry anymore.
"Ya oughta get some rest." He whispered, he released Molly from the hug and held it away from him by its shoulders.
"I- Ok. I guess so." Molly couldn't deny it, it was feeling quite tired. The last bursts of adrenaline from its escape must have finally drained from its body, and now it was left in a husk of burned energy.
"I know it ain't the most comfortable thing in the world, but I can let ya sleep here. I got a blanket if ya want." He shot Molly a sheepish, apologetic grin.
For a second as he smiled, molly saw a flash of his teeth, and something looked off. It thought for a moment it had seen… a fang? And that only made Molly realize that this was the first time it had even seen a glimpse of his teeth. Normally that wouldn't bother them so much, but thinking back on it, it was almost like he had been purposefully avoiding opening his mouth wide enough for them to see them. And the way his face had changed when he had seen all that blood all over its leg. And how tight his grip had been on its leg.
Molly thought for a moment… was he….? Was this priest actually…? No. He couldn't be. This was all just the result of paranoia. Molly was just still worked up from earlier, and how silly of them to panicked because he hadn't shown it his teeth- what an odd thing to focus on. Its not like Molly had opened its mouth wide and let him inspect its teeth the moment they met either. Besides, they were in a church. He couldn't possibly be here if he was one of them, could he?
"Ya alright?"
His voice snapped molly out of its thoughts, it sighed and smiled back at him, "Yes, sir, I'm alright. Sorry. Uhm… anyway, that'll be fine. I just appreciate ya lettin' me stay here."
"Well, of course. Can't send ya back out there, now can I?" He patted Molly's head as he stood up from the pew, "I'll go fetch ya that blanket."
He went again to the back of the church, but Molly noticed that, while he had left his bag with the first aid kit behind, he took the bag with the bloodied rags and alcohol swabs. Molly tried to tell itself that it was still just being paranoid, he was probably just taking them to discard them elsewhere. But things just weren't adding up, there was something very abnormal about this priest.
Molly shifted uncomfortably in the pew, awaiting his return, why was it taking him so long to collect a blanket? When he finally did return, he had a pile of plush, folded fabrics in his hands, on top of that sat a pillow.
"Ya lucked up, I had an extra pillow too!" He said cheerily.
"Thank you, Fa-"
Molly's eyes widened and it froze, as Wolfwood leaned down to hand them the covers, it saw something unmistakable, something that definitely hadn't been there before. A little smudged streak of something red by the corner of his mouth.
"Somethin' wrong?" His voice sounded colder this time. He knew it had seen it. He knew it was starting to suspect him.
"Uhm… no, Father. Sorry. Just… pain when I moved, that's all."
It wasn't sure he was buying their lie, he stared back at them in silence for what felt like an eternity. Then he smiled, resting the stack of covers in Molly's hands. He leaned back up, hands clasped behind his back. It hadn't noticed before but standing upright at his full height, he loomed over Molly like a massive redwood tree.
"Ya need anything for it? I can see if I got some pain pills for ya?"
His tone had shifted once more. Once again he was cheerful and polite, but now it felt like there was something extra hiding behind that tone. Something vaguely threatening.
Molly shook its head, "No, I'll be fine. It's not that bad."
"If ya say so. But let me know if ya need anything else, ok?" He turned away from them again, "I've got some work to do, get yerself some rest now."
"Ok… Thank you, Father."
He left without another word, disappearing into the back room again and Molly was alone in the otherwise empty church, it sat unmoving in the deafening silence. It shakily laid the pillow down by the arm rest of the pew and stretched out, pulling it's legs up onto the pew and spreading the cover out over its body. Tired as it was, it wasn't going to be able to rest at all.

Clawed fingers dug into the cracks in between the weathered old stones of the well and drug the strange creature up toward the surface. On any other occasion, it would lie in wait until the sun had fallen behind the horizon and all of the little villagers were in their beds, but it had learned well the people's routines. On this particular day, all the humans would scurry into that big building near the edge of the town, their houses would be empty, and so their kitchens, full of lovely cheeses, breads, and pastries, would be completely unguarded.
It cautiously poked its head out just above the well's ridge, scanning its surroundings. There didn't appear to be a soul in sight and so, with all its might, it hoisted itself quickly up over the stone wall and onto the ground. When it adjusted itself, its eyes immediately caught sight of the big building in front of it.
Well, big was an understatement, it had never seen another building quite as large as this one. It supposed that was because this building was very important to the humans, that's the conclusion it had come to from watching them bustle into it like clockwork once every seven days. Sometimes it watched them go there on different days too, but it never was so full as it was on this day.
It hadn't quite figured out what this building meant to the people, and it had to admit, it was quite curious. It scratched at its own hand anxiously as it thought- would it be alright just to take a quick look inside? It would have to find some sneaky route, it couldn't let the humans see it, no, it knew well enough by now what happened when it let a human see it. It never meant any harm to the people, but even so, the humans didn't like it, and so it had resigned itself to stay out of their sight.
The creature crawled across the wet morning grass toward the big building, really taking in the sight of it. The stone work was intricate, very detailed, especially so compared to the bland houses of the villagers. A big black wooden door with gold trim and fancy patterns carved into it, and a symbol above the door. Well, that symbol was in many places on this building, actually, and it had also seen that symbol dangling around the necks of some of the villagers, so it must be very important as well.
Crawling around to the sides of the building, it began scouring it to find a place of entrance. It craned its head up, and it spotted one, an opening near the roof. It stood, careful to make sure it wasn't poking out in front of the windows- those things looked different here- all colorful and with images of people and that symbol on them- but that little trick wouldn't fool it. It could make out the shapes of the people inside and it knew that likely meant that the people could see it's shape too. It gripped at a gap in the stones of the building and began to climb. It carried itself up, higher and higher, clinging to tiny crevices and footholds. Luckily, it was quite limber-bodied and its hands were sticky, so it managed to reach the opening safely and squeeze itself through.
Inside, it found itself high above the people, in the rafters of the big building. It was so much farther to the ground in this building than it was from the ceilings of the people's houses. It could hear soft murmuring from below, it looked down at the humans sitting in long rows. They recognized most of them; the little twin girls who played at the edge of the forest, the elderly woman who sold cheese in the center of town, the young blonde man who loved to visit the bakery, and the sweet brunette who worked at the bakery. They all seemed so nice, and it wished it could be friends with them, but it knew better than to approach any of them.
As it examined the crowd, a voice rung out above the murmurs- to welcome everyone yet again. The creature turned to find the source of the voice and was met with a strange sight, a tall man in all black clothes stood on a risen platform at the front of the room. They had never seen this man before.
As the man continued to speak, the creature listened intently. The words he spoke were not unfamiliar to it, it had been taught quite a bit by a kind old woman a very long time ago, and what she hadn't taught it, it had picked over time. Words he repeated, like "God", "The Lord", "Angels", it had heard many humans speak them before. Despite that, it was never all too clear what those things were, only that humans revered them, loved them, and felt too that they were loved in return.
The man's speech didn't help to clear anything up, only solidify what it already knew about these things. It had hoped what he said would help it understand these concepts, but it supposed since the humans already knew what they were, he didn't feel the need to explain them. It wasn't as if he was aware this strange beast in the rafters could hear him too.
Despite how unhelpful the speech might have been to it, as something that didn't even know what a "God" was, it continued to listen to the man in black speak about it. It had become utterly entranced by his voice. He spoke with such passion and such kindness. His voice was unique, it was nothing like the hoarse croak of the mother in the blue house, who scolded her young son for eating too many sweets. Nor like the shuddering boom of the man who lived in the brick house, who didn't seem to like anyone very much at all. The man who visited the bakery spoke very sweetly too, but his voice wavered, like his was uncertain of himself at times. No, the man in black spoke with a tone laced with comfort and friendliness, but also with confidence. He spoke in a way that said that he greeted people with a smile and open arms, and that he was unafraid to do so. It was reminded much of the kindly house pet who waited outside the yellow house and had once let the creature run its fingers through his plush fur.
It took a good long look at him, standing there behind the podium, addressing the villagers. He had such lovely hair, not too far in color from the clothes on his body. It began to wonder if his hair would feel as soft as the fur of that animal, and if maybe he would let it run its fingers through his hair as well. No- that was an absurd thought. Humans were never quite so friendly as the animals. And how silly an idea, to think a creature like it deserved to graze even a single hair on his head.
Its claws dug into the wood of the rafters as it watched him down below. It thought of how it would like to meet him. How it would like to see his face up close, to put its hand on him, to hear him speak to it. What would it sound like for him to address it personally? But how would he do that? These humans, they seemed to have words they used to address each other personally, words they called names. From what it had gathered, the blonde man's word was Vash, and the brunette at the bakery's was Milly. But the creature didn't have one of these words. That old woman, she had never given it one, perhaps she didn't feel the need to. But then how would the man in black address it? It wondered too what his was, and how it might address him.
The creature had become so lost in thought that before it knew it, it seemed whatever event this was was ending. The man in black's voice rang out, dismissing the crowd, wishing them a wonderful and safe Sunday. Sunday. It had heard that word from the old woman, but never had much context for it. It assumed now that must be what they called this day that they came here. Curiously, it watched as the people filed out of the building, several of them stopping to speak to the man in black on the way out. He stood by the door, shaking hands with them and nodding. They spoke quietly, it was so hard to hear what anyone said and that was infuriating.
As the building became nearly empty, the creature noticed that the man in black and Vash had lingered inside the building. Vash approached the man and struck up a conversation with him. It could hear the man in black's boisterous laughter at whatever had been said and it smiled, it was a very lovely sound. It tried best it could to make out what Vash was saying, weeding through his commentary, hoping to find that one word it was looking for.
And then- there it was. One word that stood out over the others, one it had never heard before.
"Can I ask you something, Wolfwood?"
Wolfwood. Wolfwood. So that was the man in black's name. Wolfwood. It repeated it over and over in its mind, as if studying it. It wondered how the word would sound coming from its mouth, but it quickly banished the thought. Its voice was hoarse and stilted from lack of use, the people were not fond of it. It had used to speak more, but after the tragic passing of that woman who had cared for it when it was just a small thing, it no longer did- it no longer had a need to. It still remembered, with great pain, the last time it had tried to speak to another human. The shrill cry that broke the misty morning air as the girl had run to get her brother. She had come dragging him back, by then the creature had hidden out of sight, and she described its voice to him- "like a scary, old witch!" she had said.
No, surely Wolfwood with that beautiful voice of his, would not want to hear its voice. Surely, he would be just as mortified as that girl had been. Yet, it still couldn't help but daydream about it. Perhaps if it spoke more, its voice would become nicer to listen to, but it feared being heard before then. Perhaps it could practice somewhere far away from the people. Yes, that was a good plan.
So, with the goal to speak to Wolfwood in mind, it carefully scuttled across the rafters and back to the opening in the roof. It slid down the side of the building and slipped into the woods. It surveyed its surroundings to ensure there weren't any wandering villagers, it took a deep breath and tried its hand at speaking.
"Wu-Wol-Wolf….wu- Wood."
As it suspected, it didn't sound right. It heard the sounds, it could replay them in its mind, but making the sounds was entirely different- especially after not speaking for so long. But it would keep going. It would keep going until it could easily say full sentences again. It was going to speak. It had to start small, but it was determined to find a place among these humans.
