Agnolo Bronzino - Maria (di Cosimo I) de' Medici, 1551
(English / Español / Italiano)
Maria de Cosimo de' Medici, also known as Maria Lucrezia, was born on 3 April 1540 in Livorno, Italy. She was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de' Medici, and his wife, Leonor Alvarez de Toledo. Maria was the first of eleven legitimate children of the marriage.
From birth, Maria was brought up as a true princess. She lived with her parents in the Palazzo Vecchio, where she received a thorough education. Among his tutors were Pierfrancesco Riccio and Antonio Angeli da Barga, and he is said to have been fluent in Spanish, taught by his mother and various teachers.
At an early age, her marriage to Alfonso II of Este was planned. However, the marriage never took place because Maria contracted malaria and died on 19 November 1557 in Livorno, aged 17. Her death was a devastating blow to her family.
A beautiful portrait by Agnolo Bronzino remains of Maria when she was about eight years old. This portrait is preserved in the Uffizi Gallery and is one of the most solemn, emphasising the dark colours of the costume and the background.
Her remains are buried in the oratory of the Fortezza di Livorno. Despite her short life, Maria is remembered as an important figure in the history of the Medici family and her portrait remains a masterpiece of Renaissance art.
Maria de Cosimo de' Medici is a tragic figure whose life and death left an indelible mark on her family and on Florentine culture. Her story is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of family in Renaissance society.

I just have this super soft spot for characters who went through traumatizing events, but the goodness in them never really left. They should be hating the world that brought them so much loneliness and pain, but they didn’t let the lingering darkness inside them fully consume them.
As I grew up, I learned to appreciate more of these characters because it’s just so easy to fall into despair and hate everything. It takes a strong heart to stay kind despite everything that’s happened to you.
To Leon Kennedy, who continued to protect and save people despite being traumatized by the events of Raccoon City and unfairly had his bright future taken away from him.
To Clive Rosfield, who shouldered the responsibility to save his world from its eventual ruin despite initially falling into despair for failing to save his hometown and brother.
To Aerith Gainsborough, who helped save her world from destruction despite being treated as nothing more than a lab subject at a young age, and seeing her mother die right before her very own eyes.
To Gintoki Sakata, who continued to protect anything and anyone dear to him despite losing his teacher and his place—his home, leaving a hole inside his heart.
Thank you for reminding me to be kind despite everything.

Letter from Claude-Antoine Prieur to Louis XVI on the importance of having a unified metric system in France
[The letter is dated April 1790 and included a copy of Prieur's Mémoire sur la nécessité et les moyens de rendre uniformes, dans le royaume, toutes les mesures d'étendue et de pesanteur]
"Sire,
The reputation that your Majesty has gained through his passion for sciences and the protection with which he has constantly provided them inspired in me the desire to offer him a work I have done on the necessity and the means to bring all measures of France to uniformity.
I beg your Majesty to honour me for a moment of his attention, not much for some special merit concerning my work, but above all for the high importance of its content.
It is a great and beautiful idea, the one of giving to a great people a common and invariable measure, and, even better, to make it universal. Today, the difficulties related to the lack of precision in the procedures have been overcome; what is left is just a few prejudices relegated to the classes of ignorant people, of whom the triumphant voice of reason will dismiss the prestige.
France, England, the United States of America have addressed the matter not only in their own countries, but they are in open agreement to achieve an identical result.
Savants are rather convinced of the effectiveness of this operation for the advancement of science; but how much it will reveal itself useful in easing commercial relations, from the simplest exchanges, which people’s daily needs require, to the greatest speculations!
From this double perspective of science and commerce, the States of your Majesty maintain a distinguished position among civilised nations. After all, wisdom, moderation, in a word, all the virtues of your Majesty, suggest on his part an aspiring desire towards the noble glory of being included among the benefactors of humankind. May I be allowed to say that this is a fortunate occasion to add a new benefit to those that your subject already owe you: the reunion of your Majesty with other countries to procure the same measures would be a big improvement and a favourable wish for the happiness of the people; nothing is more appropriate to strengthen in them the bonds of fraternity and concord like the sweet influence of Philosophy.
Respect has set limits that I am not entitled to go beyond. Nevertheless I thought to let truth arrive to the ears of a prince, who, because of his greatness of spirit, has always proven himself worthy of listening. To touch the heart of your Majesty, it is undoubtedly sufficient to mention a useful purpose: it will be even more touched to know that the probity, of which the operation in question is significantly the custodian, will put an end to the activities and tricks of the scoundrels.
I have persuaded myself that my disinterested homages would not be unpleasant; I am, with the utmost respect, your Majesty’s most humble and obedient servant."
— from G. Bouchard, Prieur de la Cote-d'Or, Pices Annexées, p. 458 - 459

WOAH! WOAH! WOAH! An actual bed scene? In Final Fantasy? This is a series where sex is non-existent/entirely offscreen. Sure, there’s Cloud and Tifa’s night under the Highwind, or Tidus and Yuna’s really long kiss in the water in FFX that people think was a metaphor for sex or that technically Wakka and Lulu had to have had sex in order to make their baby; but even then, those examples were more chaste than titillating.
Though, to be fair, this does more apply to basically like 95% of all JRPGs in that, even if they do have romance, it only goes as far as kissing (which even then it’s still pushing it) and for the majority of the game it will remain teasing romance or the interactions remain platonic. For specific examples, the Tales of games (which a number of games do have romances in it), after 28 years and 17 main title games, there are about only 3 kisses in the entire series (Tales of Symphonia 2, Tales of Arise and technically Tales of Graces but only in a side quest and it was an accident). Fire Emblem, despite the S-Supports, Marriages and having children as part of the gameplay, has no mentions or allusions to sex whatsoever (though it being a Nintendo game definitely plays a part in that). Even Persona, the series famous for its romance options and does go out of its way to explicitly allude that your romantic partners do go all the way with your player character, keeps the scene entirely offscreen and some players still find it ambiguous. And, on a final note, there’s Trails of Cold Steel 4 where there is a point in the game where main character Rean does in fact have sex with his chosen romance options (note: NOT any of the ones that are his students) but it is kept ambiguous except for these 3:
I think the JRPG that really pushed it to that level of explicitly sexual (but still keeping the sex scene offscreen) would have to be Xenogears.
Yeah, that’s about as explicit as JRPGs go. I know this does count as a rant, but this doesn’t make me mad; it’s just something I noticed that kinda bugged me. Though to be fair, I think Japanese media in general (other than specific media) does go out of its way to keep sex out of it.

The Portrait of Isabella d'Este, Leonardo da Vinci around 1500
Il Ritratto di Isabella d'Este, Leonardo da Vinci 1500 c.
(English / Español / Italiano)
Isabella d'Este, during a stay in Milan in 1498, saw Leonardo's portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, which he showed her. Isabella was won over by the master's hand, so much so that she wanted one for herself. A year later Leonardo fled Milan because of the victory of the French and turned back to Mantua. Isabella took advantage of the opportunity offered to her by fate, and what is more, she had the beautiful idea of pitting Giovanni Bellini against the genius Leonardo. So, she asked both artists for a portrait of her and between the two she would choose the more beautiful one. Isabella's intentions were unsuccessful, Leonardo produced two preparatory drawings and nothing more. Incidentally, one drawing was given as a gift in 1501, while the one now in the Louvre is identified with the one Leonardo took with him when he went to Venice. On the drawing there are small holes along the garments and a hand, which leads us to think that the Florentine master was ready to transfer the guiding dots onto the support that would later house the painting. The Portrait of Isabella d'Este is a preparatory drawing executed in charcoal, sanguine and yellow pastel on paper measuring 63 x 46 cm by Leonardo da Vinci, dated around 1500 and kept in the Louvre (Cabinet des Dessins) in Paris.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
