     He glances to the person at the table beside his and whispers, "Hey, how... how is it?  Is it okay to eat?"

There's a bit of a story to it, but he doesn't find the need-- no, not the comfort nor the trust to simply tell her. It's strange, even when he's so aware of her status.

        The more he thought, the more he realized she wasn’t completely accurate — he took no joy in keeping this pretense. It was simply necessity, one that he had kept up with so long that he had almost forgotten it was not real. This facade had become a part of him, his new reality.

        “'Okay' is hardly a thing one pretends to be — if I were to purport a better state of mind, a more grandeur lifestyle than what exists for me — would I not be better choosing something far great than simply 'okay'?”

                                                                                       Perhaps he did enjoy it — just a bit.
