Haikyuu!! Idol!AU Girl Group Edition
So, it’s finally here.
DISCLAIMER: References are more K-pop than J-pop and concepts and songs are from groups I am familiar with.
The Group at a Glance
Dubbed as the Nation’s Girl Group. A permanent group formed from a reality competition/survival show (very much like Produce 101/Produce 48), and they were the final members chosen by the viewers.
Though in their case, they wouldn’t just promote as a whole group, but they would also promote at least two different sub-units (very much like LOONA), then there’s also a group with chosen members to represent the whole group based on the concept given (kind of like NCT with NCT U).
They’re a diverse group, and can pretty much sell different concepts earning them a reputation of being like a ‘chameleon’ group because they can adapt rather quickly.
Full of good looking members, all visual material, but don’t be fooled because these girls are dorks and most of the members are very competitive and that makes for a good variety show content.
Has a group Youtube channel where they showcase song and dance covers and also features member of the day vlogs.
 Concepts/Songs:
Overall concept or a whole group concept that best represents them would be WSJN’s Secret. Or I.O.I’s Crush. Though there’s also Twice’s Fancy and Feel Special, but I guess that’s later in their career as a group.
There’s also IZ*ONE’s La Vie en Rose, gugudan’s A Girl Like Me and The Boots, SNSD’s Mr. Mr. and Lion Heart, and Twice’s TT.
Sub-unit songs leaning towards girl crush concepts: gugudan’s Not That Type, Pristin V’s Get It, Red Velvet’s Bad Boy and Psycho, Everglow’s Bon Bon Chocolat and ITZY’s Dalla Dalla to name a few.
Sub-unit songs leaning towards cute, innocent concepts: Apink’s I don’t know, GFRIEND’s Glass Bead and Navillera. There’s also SNSD’s Oh, I.O.I’s Very Very Very, Twice’s Signal and Cheer Up, Red Velvet’s Dumb Dumb and Red Flavor, Twice’s What is Love? for starters.
Other songs: Red Velvet’s One of These Nights, I.O.I’s Downpour, gugudan’s Diary, 2NE1’s It Hurts and Lonely.
More songs that units can do: TaeTiSeo’s Twinkle, Red Velvet’s Be Natural, Sonamoo’s I Think I Love You, Twice’s OOH AHH, KARA’s Step, and T-ARA’s Lovey Dovey. I don’t know. These songs sound fun for them to do.
Girl groups have a wide range of concepts so they pretty much touched most of them. They also have their fair share of covering boy group songs and dances so there’s also that.
The Members (in order of age)
Haiba Alisa – Alisa is the oldest member of the group and serves as sub-vocal, and visual. She’s also the actress idol among the group, and prior to joining the show, she’d been training as a model and actress. The darling onee-san, known for her delicate mannerisms and remarkable sense of style. She’s always doting on her members especially the younger ones.
My reference for idol Alisa is SNSD’s Sooyoung.
Misaki Hana – Hana is the second oldest and serves as vocal and dancer of the whole group. She’s the sub-leader of the whole group and is the leader of one of the sub-units. She’s quiet but a versatile member, and is considered an all-rounder because give her anything, she can handle it. Was already known in some form prior to joining the show because during her trainee days, she was featured in one of her agency’s boy group MV as the leading lady.
gugudan’s Hana is my reference for idol Hana.
Michimiya Yui – Yui is the leader of the whole group, as well as the other sub-unit, serves as lead vocalist and dancer. She’s known within the fandom as the crybaby leader, flustered leader, because much as she tries to keep it in, she’s really emotional and she cares a lot about the members of the group. She’s chosen as the leader even though she’s not the oldest because time and again, during the show’s course, she’s always shown helping contestants, whether they’re in the same group or not, improve and this endeared her to the viewers.
Twice’s Jihyo is my reference for idol Yui.
Suzumeda Kaori – Kaori is the main rapper and lead dancer of the group. She’s one of the girls from her agency to be included in the final line-up. Basically has reverse charm because she’s quiet and sweet when in front of the camera, but when performing, she shifts into a lethal rapper and dancing machine. She’s also a good producer and has had a hand on some of the group’s releases.
Pristin’s Nayoung is my idol reference for Kaori.
Yamaka Mika - Mika is the group’s main vocal. A skilled songwriter as well, something she got from her father who’s a composer. Came from one of the big talent agencies so there was quite a lot of pressure on her to do well, which she did because she has the voice to prove it. The only member revealed to be in a relationship (much to the fanboy’s dismay), but they still support her, since her boyfriend seems to be really sweet and good to her (base from her Insta stories).
I.O.I and WSJN’s Yeonjung is my reference for Mika.
Shimizu Kiyoko – Kiyoko serves as the groups vocal and another visual. The ice queen-slash-winter goddess, as the fandom dubs her. She’s quiet and generally a poker-faced beauty but has some sort of 4d personality, especially when she’s ‘playing’ around with the younger members. The group’s representative to anything athletic, as she used to be part of the track team during her middle school years. The group’s dark horse when it comes to variety shows, because of her witty one liners. Has the most fanboys out of the members.
Red Velvet’s Irene is Shimizu’s idol reference.
Nametsu Mai – Mai is the main dancer of the group, and also serves as sub-rapper. The ‘dance cover diva’ as she’s known, she’s already a bit famous prior to joining the competition show because of her cover channel that has at least a million views on average and had been an instructor in one of the elite dance studios in the country.
SNSD’s Hyoyeon is Mai’s idol reference.
Shirofuku Yukie – Hails from the same agency as Kaori, and serves as the group’s other lead dancer and sub-vocal. The mukbang queen who is always seen eating in the background whether in behind the scenes videos or official videos, but she’s also the group’s chef and seems to be really knowledgeable about nutritional values of food and such.
Yukie’s idol reference is Twice’s Momo.
Amanai Kanoka – Kanoka is the group’s other rapper and dancer, is in charge of the height of the group as she’s the tallest member, with Alisa coming in second. Another representative for anything athletic as she used to play volleyball before she joined and trained to be an idol. Has a cute and undeniable crush on a famous rapper Ryuu, which she cites as her major inspiration (actually his song is what she used for her audition).
Sonamoo’s NewSun is my idol reference for Kanoka.
Yachi Hitoka – Yachi is the group’s maknae and is a dependable all-rounder despite being the youngest, although she’s mostly vocals and sometimes, sub-rapper. She’s the only daughter of a famous designer so she’s somehow known in that particular circle but she wanted to make a name of her own, so she decided to train as an idol. Has a good eye for design and has had a hand in designing the group’s official logo and some of their album covers.
Since I can’t choose, I have two idol references for Yachi: IZ*ONE’s Yena and Twice’s Dahyun.
BONUS:
Tanaka Saeko – I really wanted to include Saeko in the group, but she’s a league of her own and can’t be tamed so I just made her a rapper/soloist that has a girl crush, hip-hop concept/genre from the same agency that manages the activities of the group which basically means collaboration can happen. Elder sister of the rapper Ryuu, and they started out as a duo especially during their Youtuber days, but they both wanted to be able to stand on their own, so they signed independently from each other. Produces and writes most of her songs, and is also a skilled instrumentalist, particularly drums, and is adept with playing taiko.
Think of 2NE1’s CL, as she’s my reference for idol Saeko.
(Saeko-neesan be like: naega jeil jal naga~)
I’d really want their collab song to be 2NE1’s I Love You. I think that would be so rad.
Anyway, that’s it! There are more idol au HC’s here.

Takarazuka (& adjacent) week-end roundup 8.2.19
Hanagumi will be re-staging Haikara-san ga Tooru for Yuzuka Rei’s Grand Theater debut in March 2020. I called this a bottle episode on twitter but no one else thought it was funny
The God of Stars shinko was Tuesday and it looked lit; also based on frequent choice of work-bound walking partners, classmates Maisora Hitomi and Amato Kanon appear to be BFFs. I’m glad they got to lead a shinko together before Maisora is no longer eligible
The Diamond as Big as the Ritz roles were assigned, obliterating my faint hopes that somehow Yuuki Shion had been left out of this small theater run by accident
Asami Hikaru and Asami Rei will be appearing in what looks like the Broadway version of Anastasia, thanks babe for a) doing a big musical for a change b) getting it out of the way before the Olympics
Ok, I swear I’m not even like, trying to be biased here with who makes it into my entirely subjective and undoubtedly incomplete news roundups, but Nanami-friggin-Hiroki just keeps doing stuff, lighting our preconceptions of what you can do with an OG career on fire and throwing them into the ocean. Ya girl literally held a virtual ochakai, dropped a horny music video with thought-provoking lyrics I intend to share at some point, and snagged her own brand new SkyStage segment despite being retired, ep 2 of which appears to be let’s discuss how real men are more disappointing than otokoyaku (submissions open!)
Meanwhile over on the other end of the spectrum, MiyaRuri is a cryptid, sharing news such as “I’m gonna be at a thing at a shrine in Himeji that I think will be airing on this obscure channel only in this one prefecture” exclusively in disappearing insta stories
Poor suffering Tsukishiro Kanato has been announced OUT of Buyokai but specifically IN I Am From Austria, despite the former starting 3.5 weeks after the latter (in all seriousness, I get it, buyo is specifically rough on the back/hips/etc). Last night I dreamed that I ran into Reiko, who had been gone so long her hair had grown past her shoulders and she was fully a Girl. I hope to god that’s not a premonition
Light of my life Kazuki Sora (& crew) danced to Uptown Funk in her Brilliant Dreams
And, of course, the long-awaited TRANSFER ANNOUNCEMENT (here in English)
My ENTIRELY PERSONAL, CORRECTNESS NOT AT ALL GUARANTEED transfer takes:
My stomach is still somewhere in my basement re: Hitoko. That’s... our baby (stop I know I married into Soragumi but 絆!絆!y’all). Taking personal feelings out of it, if they wanted a cleanup hitter of that generation to stabilize gutted Hanagumi in as few moves as possible, they did it. She is and has been the most—tbh, only—surefire, clear-path, absolutely tracked otokoyaku out of all the 96ths and 97ths. She’s talented in all areas, and she’s a Prince Charming type, which in my opinion makes her a chameleon and will allow her ultimately to mold well to Hanagumi’s vibe. She will absolutely give them the support they need. But keeping personal feelings in it... she’s been Yukigumi’s clear-cut future for like at least 7 years. I saw her first ginkyou solo live. I watched her go from scared to scary stage presence. I was so looking forward to her eventual reign. I know this stuff always happens, I know she’s still gonna get it, and she might get it sooner than she would have. But I’m real sad she won’t be getting it where I watched her grow up.
I knew Aasa had no chance if her competition was Hitoko. Now... hmm.
Kiwa is such a WHOOPS, we take that back
I’m not gonna pretend to know what they have planned for Aichan and Ayaki Hikari in Hoshigumi. From what I’ve observed, I’m not sure they’d have moved Kiki in the first place if they had confidence Aichan would make it to top stardom. Even if she’s not Coto’s successor, she’ll probably get all the nibante roles for the time being, and she’s someone who can sell the small theaters until an actual successor is decided upon. This move, out of all of them, makes me wonder if recently something somewhere didn’t go according to plan. I got the impression they offered Aichan the senka option as a courtesy, since at the time there wasn’t really room for her in a troupe; I’d be surprised if the PLAN was to move her out of it again so soon. Plan aside, I like her a lot and I’m glad she’ll be back on a regular schedule.
Only semi-related, back in the day I thought Aichan to Micchangumi would have been a genius move. They caught on a few centuries too late.
Ayaki Hikari (Hitoko’s classmate), someone who will be ken-10 in her first Hoshi Grand Theater and has only ever split a bow, is probably just moving out of the way, and the Hoshi producer liked her and took her. I think she’ll likely get better roles than she did in Hana, but I need to see some definitive proof before I’ll buy that they have any intention of actually pushing her.
Shidou Ryuu I think is also just moving out of the way—this is a 3-person Hitoko ripple effect. Why to SORAGUMI, the last troupe that needs bodies, who knows—although I guess that could always be “the last troupe that needs bodies, FOR NOW”. That said, I didn’t think the company considered Riku specifically someone who needs to be replaced, but if there’s one person in the whole company I had to put in the exact same category of person, it would be Shidou.

More chillis please
Being the person who assumes the landscape of their environment upon entering the room and often designated as kin of the furniture, Yachi is very happy when people speak at her and not to her, so that unnecessary conversations do not occur and everyone can go back to ignoring her as they did before.
Acquiring a retail job runs something similar to that vein.
A retail job in a relatively functional business is great. People still try to be friendly - older people, and older men, which, no - but it's not too unbearable.
She gets a message, one day, while she's getting a one-on-one tutoring session by Yours Truly, Chameleon Expert Man Himself, Kinoshita, on calculus and tactics of evading eye contact. They're revising what she should know, she's confident that going to the job, with these new skills, will maximise her invisibility, when her phone vibrates and seeing as the team shares absolutely zero boundaries, she pores over the message with Kinoshita, who bites into a slice of orange.
"New shift?" He chews, eyebrow lifted.
She's noting that down as a skill that she needs to be taught. Kiyoko-san does it very often and it makes grown men cry on the spot. Yachi can weaponise that and turn it on the creeps at work. It can work for her.
"Hmm," she nods, mouth full of orange slices. Kinoshita slaps a napkin to her face, picks up her phone and types a response out. By the time she swallows the pieces of citrusy goods and wipes herself dry of unwanted orange spit, there is a hovering screen with the line I'm good to go on Saturday. Same time as usual? waiting for her approval from her upperclassman.
"All good, Kinoshita-san," she gives him two thumbs up, because he deserves it.
"I'm going inside to tell Chikara we're almost done. Send it and pack up. We're bullying Ryuu to buy us food," he rises, takes his books with him, and gives her a jaunty wave at the doorway.
She hits send. Working at the bakery in Miyagi central shopping district with the locals is great, but working in busy Tokyo where she will know nobody and the customers will assume she is a speaking brick wall?
Ideal.
She sweeps all her books into her tote bag and sprints after Kinoshita.
-.-
The nature of the bakery franchise she works at is that she rings in all the sales when customers approach her with the baked goods and she restocks when bread is running low. That's the official job description.
Recently the bakery, influenced a little by by multiculturalism and mostly by the owner being completely smitten with the Vietnamese literature teacher with the dimpled smile who passes by their bakery every second day, they also have a banh mi side gig.
According to Suga-san, what the workplace is doing is very similar to Subway, but more Asian. Regardless of the plagiarism of what had been done in food chain stores, this is her job and if she wants to save up for a nicer tablet for graphic design then she just has to suck it up princess and cry her way through the world of earning hard cold cash.
So now she makes bread. Per order of the customers who now have to interact with her, human to human.
It is just as uncomfortable for her as it is for the customers so - equivalent exchange?
Anyways. Now she has Stories. The team sets aside time to provide group therapy for Yachi and the Woes of Being a Slave to Capitalism. It is aptly named group therapy because it is a bunch of highschoolers sitting in a loose collection of volley playing brats and consoling a little blonde girl of her retail hardships.
Today's story, she muses as she runs nose first into Asahi's abruptly stopped back, must be the More Chillis Please episide.
It happens like this -
It is 10 o'clock, she had been there for two hours and made, to the worst of her memory and knowledge, at least twenty individual banh mi. She is righteously outraged by the smell of egg mayonnaise, and if somebody shows up in the store again she will Scream.
Anyways, once the moment of Mandatory Two Hour Fury manifested and dissipated, she settles back into greeting customers, offering her services, and registering sales.
She sees the two boys, clad in similar sports jackets, not a uniform, but it is close enough, on their very very tall and lanky frames.
She is immediately brought back to the sight of Kei and Asahi, except Asahi is twice as wide as one of these guys.
Yachi ties up the package for her current customer, bides them farewell and good luck on their date, and turns to the two boys, her Customer Service Voice already on its routine greeting and question.
"Hi, welcome to Dreamworks Bakery. How can I help you today?"
The slightly shorter boy, with bushy eyebrows and wow those really look like caterpillars, wait until the team hears about this, leans forward, friendly smile fixed across his crooked front teeth.
"Hi there, if you don't mind, can I have one pork roll please, that's cut in half."
Yachi sets to work, doesn't think too much or too hard at why there are two boys and only one bread. She picks up the tongs, considering the viable options -
They are sharing this tiny loaf of Vietnamese bread roll, which, is never going to be enough, even for her, and she eats roughly a sixth of the amount Kageyama eats, so that says Something. Maybe it's just a snack. Who knows
The grumpy boy with the face mask willingly walked his friend or walked with him to this busy bakery to wait for him to buy a small snack, which, Amazing Dedication
She finishes it up, takes the knife to cut the bread in half but wonkily, because she has a healthy fear of knives, you know, as a normal sensible human person would. The boys have been chattering between themselves, the one who ordered constantly bumping into his companion, grinning and tugging on his arm. While from the companion's end there is the long suffering Stop being annoying universal eye roll and sigh combo, it's done with the same degree of exasperated fondness Kei huffs at Tadashi, the unspoken but loud What am I going to do with you, you troublesome creature?
Yachi thinks that everything happening is meant to both be a private moment and a routine, and she shouldn't pry. She also thinks that she is reading too much into this, that toxic masculinity is slowly eroding away with her generation and boys can care for each other deeply without the gross gushing of others around them of Amazing, uwu, yaoi babies.
That had actually happened with Suga-san and Akiteru while they were running an errand so Ew. She's not going to become one of those people.
It's not really a big moment of deep euphoria when the shorter boy with the bushy caterpillar eyebrows slips a hand into the other's pocket, leaning right up into his side, under his retreated chin. It is a cuddle manifesting slowly in front of her eyes, and she pauses in her struggle with the paper bags and her two pieces of bread, to blink and the scene make an Ah sound in her lizard brain.
"Cool," she hums.
"Sorry again, but," Caterpillar Brow leans up against the glass, "would you mind adding chillis onto one half?"
Yachi is already stretching one nearest to her hand open. "Tell me when to stop."
He flashes her another winning smile. "You're so valid."
She grins, sprinkling chillis in the tiny half. After a good half of the bread is covered, and he asks her to stop.
Only for the masked friend to lean forward, tug down his face mask, and speak softly.
"Add more, please."
Because Yachi assumes things, as she does, like a presumptuous idiot, she goes on fulfilling the request and thinking that it's for the masked friend. The masked friend doesn't like ordering so his friend had taken up that responsibility for him and he has the taste bud of titanium which explains the excessive chilli situation.
"Is this," she is afraid to ask, "enough?"
She tries to make eye contact with both boys, but because the Presumptuous Moron Energy is on high visibility that day, the masked companion tugs his mask up and draws out his wallet, sighing softly.
"This one," he jerks his head to his companion, "likes his food to strip off skin when he eats. I hold no jurisdiction over his questionable tastes."
It's all kinds of a wonderful, wonderful plot twist. She accepts the payment and wishes them farewell in a rather mechanical manner, and spends a good half of the day just processing everything that transpired. Everything from the masked friend taking the bread from her and pulling the strap onto his wrist so he can hold the other boy's hand, to them knocking heads as they walk away, the excitable companion speaking onto his neck as they disappear into the throng of people.
Asahi apologises for almost running her over and into a medically induced concussion, but she reassures him that she's fine, I've been the victim of a spike before, Asahi-san, this is like a small shove next to that, oh no don't cry, please, I'll live.
Story time is going to be Lit.

At Last I See the Light
For @akagami-no-rae, for the AnS Gift Exchange! I thought the Tangled references you drew for zenyukiweek were really cute, so I decided to play with what a Tangled AU would look like. I chose this particular scene to make sure I could include all the characters that you requested. I hope you like it! Merry Christmas!
Zen watched irritably as Shirayuki blew on the fire, coaxing its growth. He would have been right beside her, helping, if his first attempt to lift the firewood hadn’t left him gasping in pain and unable to keep his grip.
That didn’t mean he had to like it.
“Okay, that’s done.” Shirayuki stood, brushing off her skirt. “Let me see your hand now.”
Zen held it away from her. “I thought you were going to explain about your hair first,” he challenged. “My hand will be fine.”
Shirayuki glanced to the side, pressing her lips together. “Healing people is my job. I don’t want to you to be in pain any longer.” She sat beside him on the tree. “Besides, it would be easier to show you than to explain.”
Zen laughed at the firm set of her jaw. “Fine, but don’t leave anything out this time.”
Maybe he was crazy, but this girl had already saved him more than once. He placed his hand in hers.
The last thing he expected was for her wrap her hair around it. “Wha--?”
“Please wait,” Shirayuki insisted. She closed her eyes. “Hana wa kirameku mahou no hana...” As she sang, a light shone from within her hair, brighter than the firelight. Zen watched the glow travel down the length of her hair to his hand and felt warmth like the sun on his face. Then the light faded.
Shirayuki unwrapped his hand, checking it for injury with a critical eye before she nodded and released him. There was no sign of the cut.
“Shirayuki...” Zen turned his hand back and forth, trying to make his mind accept what he could clearly feel and see. Finally, he closed his hand and smiled at her.
She relaxed, smiling back with bright eyes.
“I knew you were more than a girl with interesting hair when I met you in that tower,” Zen smirked, unable to resist reveling in that small victory. His smile turned sheepish. “But you were right, I never would have guessed the truth. Have you always known?”
Shirayuki shook her head, looking off into the dark night and running her fingers through her hair. “Ever since I was small, I’ve liked learning about medicine and how to help people. My grandparents encouraged me and one day, they said I was old enough to learn a special song. They taught me how to use the power of my hair, but they also told me to keep it a secret.”
She turned back to him. “And I tried. I only used it when no one else could see, in the very worst emergencies. But--” She bit her lip and closed her eyes. “After they died, people still came for me, wanting my hair and the money they could make from it. Somehow, everyone knew, even after all I’d done to follow my grandparents’ wishes.” Shirayuki bowed her head, hands curled in her skirts. “What good is a healer who can’t even protect herself?”
“That’s a joke, right?”
Shirayuki started, looking up at him. He smiled.
“You’ve not only protected yourself but me, as well.” Zen grinned at her. “If I hadn’t shown up, I have no doubt that you would have gotten free on your own. You’re amazing, Shirayuki. I may have just met you, but I already know that nothing can keep you from your dreams.”
Shirayuki blushed, letting her hair fall forward to hide her face. “Umm...did you...” She twisted a strand of hair around one finger, hesitating. “Did you really mean it when you said your real name was Zen Wisteria?” Her eyebrows drew together. “Isn’t the Wisteria family…?”
Zen heaved a sigh, bracing himself on his hands as he leaned back. “Yeah, they’re the one you’re thinking of. But my brother always has things well in hand, and I’ve never been good at playing politics with people who smile and flatter and never show you their real feelings. I had to leave because...I felt like I had no purpose.” He chuckled, looking up at the sky. “I wanted to do something real, make a difference for people in the world.”
Shirayuki leaned closer, caught up in his story. She could imagine him as a little boy bursting with life and adventure, searching for a place where he could shine.
Zen rocked forward, spreading his hands in front of him. “The servants used to tell me stories about this legendary swordsman, Mitsuhide Lowen. He was the best swordsman in the world, they said. And he only ever used his skills against those who had wronged the innocent and the helpless. I knew that was the kind of life I wanted.”
Shirayuki blinked. “Sir Mitsuhide is a legend? I’ve never heard of it...”
Zen waved his hand. “It’s much more popular up north where my mother’s from. Anyway...” He sighed, clasping his hands together and resting his chin on them. “One day, I went out for a walk and I realized: No one really needed me at home. It wouldn’t matter if I never came back.
“So,” he shrugged. “I just kept walking.”
“Do you miss your home?” Shirayuki asked. She lowered her voice, watching the shadows play across Zen’s face. “Your family?”
Zen’s lips twisted. “I’m sure that my brother is relieved that I’m not underfoot and getting into messes that he has to fix anymore.” He struck a relaxed pose. “Besides, when I can be the hero Mitsuhide Lowen and swoop in to save everyone, why would I want anything else?”
The fire crackled. Zen stood and swept her a bow. “And that’s my cue. I will rescue us from this cold night by getting more firewood. With all the new strength that you’ve given me, Shirayuki.” He held up his formerly injured hand and winked.
Shirayuki leaned forward, wrapping her arms around her knees as he turned to go. He had almost left the circle of firelight before she managed to speak. “I want you to know…! Zen!”
He stopped dead at the sound of his real name from her lips, turning back slowly.
Shirayuki forged on. “I’m glad I met you, Zen Wisteria.” She met his eyes. “Even more than Sir Mitsuhide, I’m glad to know you, Zen.”
His face softened. “Thank you, Shirayuki.” Zen seemed about to say more, but instead he did an about-face and marched determinedly into the woods, cheeks flushed.
Shirayuki felt her own cheeks warm. She stood hurriedly and looked around for Ryuu.
The little chameleon was curled in a hollow in the tree root.
“Sleep well, Ryuu,” she murmured, stroking his back with one finger. It had been an exciting day.
When she straightened up, glancing into the forest, her heart stuttered in her chest.
A man stood there.
Illuminated by moonlight, the stranger held a handful of her hair, letting the strands run through his fingers. “So you must be the girl worth more than a river of rubies.”
Shirayuki backed up, hands going to her hair. “Who are you?”
He didn’t answer, just kept studying the red strands. “It’s not rubies that come to my mind.” His eyes rose, a piercing blue. “Rather, what is left in the wake of a deadly fight.”
Shirayuki shivered. She felt transfixed as if by the stare of a hawk.
“Are you worth that?” He dropped her hair without breaking eye contact. “The lifeblood of those who would fight for you?”
Her mouth was dry. “I-I don’t want anybody to get hurt,” she whispered.
He smirked. “Are you so confident in the abilities of that swordsman, then?”
“Sword--?” Shirayuki involuntarily glanced in the direction Zen had disappeared and the man gave her a smile with too much teeth in it.
Her hands were shaking so she fisted them at her sides. Shirayuki took a steadying breath and shook her head. “Mitsu--Zen isn’t my guard. He’s my friend. And--I do believe in him. He’s the strongest person I know. He’s never let anything stop him.”
His predatory smile dissolved into a cold glare. “He sounds like a convenient ‘friend’ to be your shield against the world. Did you tell him those same honeyed words to lure him to you?”
Shirayuki held her head high. “Zen and I are walking side by side. We chose to follow the same path to our dreams. I won’t let you belittle his choices.”
The man tilted his head to one side. Almost carelessly, he drew a sword and held it up so it caught the light. “And what about your choice?”
The sword flashed and a severed leaf spun through the air. Shirayuki stiffened.
“Will you call for him now? Make him face my blade for your sake? Or come quietly?”
Shirayuki held very still so her voice would not shake. “I won’t just go with you. I’ll fight you. What Zen decides is up to him.”
The man straightened and sheathed his sword, looking otherworldly with the moonlight glowing on his pale hair. “The rumors say that your hair brings life and healing but you should know better. There’s death in that red hair of yours. It will follow you and anyone with you. Think carefully before you decide who that will be.” With that he stepped back, swallowed by the shadows.
Crouched on a boulder, Obi stifled a yawn with one hand. He looked up as the exalted young lord stepped into the clearing. “Finished already?” He leaned down to look at him, but his face was unreadable as ever. “Did you get what you wanted?”
Dark blue eyes flicked towards him, then away. “Not yet,” came the cold answer.
Obi bristled. “I can’t wait forever. I have a master to answer to.” He kept his voice light and playful but he made a show of tossing one of his knives in the air and catching it.
“Then take the girl,” the young lord said dismissively.
Obi sat back on his heels. “Just like that? What about--?”
“I won’t interfere. Perhaps I’ll even smooth your way.” The young lord’s hand dropped to the sword on his belt. “On the condition that you can separate them without harm coming to my brother.” His eyes were cold steel as they met Obi’s. “Even if he tries to stop you.”
So that’s how it was. Well, Obi had faced harder missions. If he had to rely on guile instead of violence, then at least those two fresh-faced kids looked like good targets. “That’s a deal I’ll take, milord.” He gave a careless salute and flipped back into the woods.

you were my new dream 4/5 (skk tangled au!)
ye so now I’ve caught up with ao3 :D
read on ao3
part one | two | three
“So that was the boy?” Fyodor asks, hidden away in the trees, eyeing the redhead skeptically as he watches him converse with Dazai. “Dazai seems surprisingly fond of him.”
Mori smiles, but it's empty of any sort of amusement. “Does he?”
“Yes,” he answers, lips twisting into a malicious grin as he continues with, “and so do you.”
The older man’s smile becomes more stiff. “You don't need to worry about that,” he replies, “I’m a man of my word, you know.”
His smile widens. He turns his gaze towards the pair. “And so am I,” he lies.
Chuuya wakes up to the sound of Dazai’s screaming.
He abruptly sits up, arms flailing as he jerks his body around to see what the commotion was all about, only to gawk at the image of a horse dragging Dazai away by his foot.
“For fucks sake!” Chuuya shouts, scrambling onto his feet to run after them. He grabs Dazai’s arms and begins to pull, ignoring the brunet’s shouts of pain. “Fucking let him go!”
The horse shakes his head, rocking Dazai’s body back in forth due to the fact his foot was in the horse’s mouth.
Snarling, Chuuya begins to pull harder. Suddenly, Dazai’s shoe falls off, causing his foot to slip out of the horse’s mouth and the three of them to land on the ground with a loud thump. Chuuya groans, sitting up and rubbing his back.
The horse blinks at the shoe in his mouth for a moment before neighing loudly and charging at them. Dazai scurries to hide behind Chuuya while Chuuya holds his arms out in an attempt to calm the horse down.
“Hey, hey, easy there!” He calls out, “Woah, boy. It’s alright…”
The horse jerks back in forth, in an attempt to move around Chuuya but he quickly moves with him, blocking the horse’s path. “It’s alright,” Chuuya repeats, and the horse stares at him inquisitively for a moment, gaze moving up to probably look at Akutagawa, who was currently resting on Chuuya’s head, before visibly calming down.
“Now sit,” Chuuya orders crossing his arms. The horse stares at him. “Sit.”
The horse slowly and reluctantly sits down. Chuuya swears it’s scowling.
“Now drop the boot,” he demands, pointing to the ground. The horse shakes his head. “His feet sweat a lot, you know.”
“They do not—” Dazai begins, only for Chuuya to turn back and glare at him.
The horse drops the boot.
“Good boy!” Chuuya praises, reaching up to pet the horse’s nose and under his chin. “I bet you’re tired of chasing this idiotic thief throughout the kingdom, aren’t you…”
The horse nods, the two of them ignoring Dazai’s insulted, “Excuse me?” “Isn’t he such a terrible guy,” Chuuya continues, “Always going on and on about stupid things, making stupid jokes, smiling that dumb smile…”
“I’m right here!”
The horse nods again, more enthusiastically, tail beginning to flap.
“Aw, you’re a good horse, aren’t you…” Chuuya looks down to read the horse’s badge that was connected to his saddle strap, “...Kunikida?”
“He’s a terrible horse!” Dazai exclaims, pouting.
“He’s just a good, hardworking horse who wants to finish his job,” Chuuya coos, smiling as the horse nuzzles his face. “Look at him.”
Dazai huffs, making the horse whip his head around Chuuya and glare at the brunet. Dazai stands up, moving closer and glaring back. Chuuya holds his hands out appeasingly.
“Look, today is an important day for me, okay?” He begins, moving to make eye contact with Kunikida. “Just for today, I need you to not get him arrested, you got that?”
The horse growls.
“Just for today. Then you guys can do whatever the fuck you want,” Chuuya continues, looking expectantly at both of them. At their hesitance, he adds, “Also, it’s my birthday.”
This makes Dazai sigh, reluctantly holding out a hand for Kunikida to shake. The horse reluctantly follows suit. There’s an intense moment of glaring that Chuuya interrupts as he walks between the two, breaking their handshake, eyes wide as he realizes he can see an island in the distance, along with a castle rising tall and proud.
“Is that…” He trails off, turning to look at Dazai.
The brunet grins. “Yes—”
An eager smile spread across his lips, eyes brightening. Chuuya grabs the other’s arm and pulls him along. “Then let’s go, you bastard!”
They make it to the kingdom in no time, beginning to cross the bridge that led to the island. Dazai watches in fond amusement as Chuuya stares up at the kingdom in awe.
“Ryuu, look how big it is,” he hears the redhead mumble to Akutagawa, who is currently perched on Chuuya’s head.
A wanted sign of him is posted on the bridge railing, and he quickly rips it off, shoving it into his pocket. Kunikida huffs at him, while Dazai sticks his tongue out. The horse shoves him against the railing in retaliation. He shoves the horse back, about to throw a punch, before Akutagawa whips around and hisses at them, effectively making them stop.
The kingdom is busy with people, as Dazai expected, filling the air with the hum of conversation. Banners of the kingdom’s flag, a golden sun stitched onto a purple background are hung almost everywhere. He sees Chuuya begin to move forward, only to stop with a grimace, hands reaching up to his hair. Dazai turns around to see people stepping on the trail of red hair Chuuya left behind him, and he quickly helps the other gather it up off the ground.
“I guess we should’ve thought about this,” Chuuya mutters.
Dazai glances around in thought, eyes catching onto a little girl and older boy braiding  an older girl’s hair into pigtail braids.
“How many times are you gonna braid and unbraid my hair?” The older girl huffs, crossing her arms. The boy with light silver hair smiles sheepishly.
“Kyouka really likes braiding now that we’ve taught her how, and besides, your hair is really pretty, Lucy.”
At this, the girl named Lucy flushes. “W-Whatever.”
“Atsushi,” Kyouka deadpans, “you messed up the top of your braid.”
The boy smiles sheepishly as he examines his work. “You’re right…”
Dazai gets an idea. “Excuse me!” He calls out, causing the three of them to look over at him. He holds out his arms, showing off the length of Chuuya’s hair. “A little help, please?”
He swears he sees the younger girl’s eyes sparkle.
The three children get to work, ushering Dazai and Chuuya away from the crowds and sitting Chuuya down. Dazai leans against a wall, watching from a distance.
“There’s so much…” Atsushi marvels, running his fingers through the redhead’s hair. “Your hair is really pretty, sir! The boy exclaims.
Chuuya tucks his hair away from his face, almost looking a bit embarrassed. “Aha...thank you. Just Chuuya is fine.”
Lucy frowns, tilting her head in thought. “There’s so much. How are we going to do this?”
“Multiple,” Kyouka states, “multiple braids in one.”
The three of them get to work, splitting Chuuya’s hair in smaller sections and braiding individual parts. The three of them chatter the entire time, asking Chuuya about his life and what he was doing here.
And Dazai…
Dazai just stares at the way the light shines through Chuuya’s hair, at the other’s facial expressions, at the curve of the other’s lips, at the shine in the other’s eyes.
As if sensing Dazai’s gaze, the redhead turns his head just a fraction, in order to not mess up the children’s work, making eye contact. He gives Dazai a small smile before looking away again.
He goes to get some food,  knowing it will take awhile, Akutagawa joining him on his shoulder while Kunikida stays behind. When he comes back though, the kids have already finished.
He almost drops the bread he bought.
Chuuya’s standing up, looking over his shoulder as he examines his braid, moving his body this way and that to see how different it feels with his hair not restraining him. Now, only a few centimeters of it drags along the ground. Within his braid are smaller, intricate braids, while pink and white apple blossoms,  along with juliet roses and peach blossoms, are woven into his hair. Smaller, light yellow flowers stained with coral are scattered throughout each and every braid, while a lone camellia rests on the side of his head.
“...Aren’t the flowers a bit too much?” Chuuya questions, frowning.
“Of course not!” Lucy huffs.
Atsushi just smiles. “You look really nice, Chuuya-san!”
Kyouka nods in agreement. “The flowers make it pretty.”
“It looks nice, doesn't it, Dazai-san?” Atsushi asks, only to frown at Dazai’s unresponsiveness, gaze still focused on Chuuya. “Dazai-san?”
Dazai blinks, turning his head to stare at Atsushi blankly for a moment before turning back to look at Chuuya. The redhead is currently looking at him with an almost concerned expression.
“Well?” The redhead snaps, crossing his arms, and Dazai realizes that the other is just trying to not look embarrassed. “Does it look good or not?”
“It looks wonderful,” he says, and it sounds too genuine, too real, and not at all like Dazai Osamu. He feels the sudden urge to cover it up, to throw in a jab or joke, but Chuuya’s expression stops him. The redhead looks surprised, eyes wide, a flush to his cheeks as a small smile spreads across his lips.
“You’re more attractive when you’re being honest to yourself.”
“I-Is that so,” Chuuya replies, and his echoed response makes Dazai smile. The redhead turns to the children, placing a hand on Atsushi’s shoulder. “Well, thanks guys, you really helped me out. I hope your day is fun.”
The children all say their goodbyes and gratefulness, Kyouka demanding Chuuya to keep the braid in as long as possible before the two groups part ways.
Dazai lags behind with Kunikida, openly staring at the redhead in front of him. Kunikida nudges him, a knowing smirk on his face, and Dazai just pushes the horse’s face out of his view. The two of them hear Akutagawa’s hiss, and immediately stop to look at the chameleon perched on Chuuya’s head, expecting a scolding.
Instead, Dazai swears the chameleon gives Dazai a very amused smile, and he scowls, shoving Kunikida again when the horse begins burst out in what Dazai assumes is laughter.
“Shuuji?” Chuuya calls out, turning around, and the name sends a million emotions through Dazai at once; he feels a spark of irritation, feels a slice of fear, feels a sense of happiness along with pain and sadness.
But at the same time…he also feels some sort of relief.
“Shuuji, are you coming or what?” Chuuya continues in his grouchy tone.
Dazai laughs, quickening his step so he catches up to the other. “Sorry, Chuuya’s so small I didn’t even see him there.”
“Huh?! Why you piece of shit—”
They spend the entire day walking around the town, walking close enough that they bump shoulders more often than not. Much to Chuuya’s surprise, Dazai actually has money, and he has lots of it. He buys Chuuya fresh fruit, buys him pastries, even buys him a glass of wine with the promise that it'd be the only glass he'd drink.
Just as he’s handing Chuuya his drink, one of his own in his other hand, two guards come into view. The two of them glance at each other, eyes wide, before hastily moving to a place to hide. They move into an alley, slipping into a small alcove and out of eyesight,  trying to not spill their drinks in the process.
The guards walk by without so much a glance in their direction. The two of them remain silent for a moment, turning to look at each other, before bursting out into laughter.
“Little Chuuya,” Dazai murmurs, and the fond tone in his voice is all it takes for Chuuya to forget about Mori, about the satchel, about his insecurities over his feelings. He feels his heart race. Suddenly he’s aware of how close the two are to each other, tucked away in this small space. Dazai moves his drink to his left hand before intertwining his arm with Chuuya’s right, which currently holds his glass of wine. He gently pulls Chuuya closer. “Drink with me.”
“Like this?” Chuuya questions, raising an eyebrow as he stares at their crossed arms. “Isn’t this something only couples do?”
Dazai smirks. “Are you backing down from a challenge?” Chuuya’s smile can only be described as feral. “As if. I bet I could drink this whole glass in one sitting.”
“Hmm? I doubt that little Chuuya can handle that—” Chuuya watches in amusement as Dazai cringes when he stomps on his foot. “Alright, alright—”
They take a drink, and it quickly becomes a competition to see who can finish first, the two of them moving closer so they’d have more arm leverage in order to tip their glass towards their mouths.
Chuuya finishes first, grinning widely as he watches Dazai down the last sip of his drink before untangling their arms. “It seems like you're all talk, you bandaged bastard.”
“Didn't you know that already?” Dazai replies, and Chuuya laughs, dragging the other out of the alcove and back onto the street.
They pass by a stand selling handkerchiefs with the kingdom’s symbol, a golden sun stitched onto a purple background. Chuuya stares at it as they walk.
“Do you want one?” Dazai asks, already reaching into his pocket, and suddenly Chuuya feels a small flash of sheepishness.
“No,” he denies, but Dazai moves towards the stand anyway. “Shuuji, it's fine, you've already bought me so much stuff—”
“Aw, is little Chuuya finally feeling some shame?” Dazai shoots back, grinning flirtatiously at the woman at the stand as he offers her his money. Chuuya scowls at the display, crossing his arms with a huff.
Dazai flings the handkerchief onto Chuuya’s face, causing him to rip it off with annoyance, glaring at the other. He studies the handkerchief with a frown, face softening as he examines it longer, holding it up to compare it to the flags already hanging from every nook and cranny throughout the village. “Thanks,” he murmurs, feeling bad that he’s been making Dazai buy so many things but feeling grateful that the other has done so anyway.
Dazai just smiles.
They soon stumble upon children drawing pictures on the pavement with chalk. “I’ve never drawn with chalk before,” Chuuya muses as he watches. “There wasn’t really any reason to do it in the tower.”
“Do you want to try?” The brunet asks, and Chuuya frowns in contemplation.
“...Isn’t this supposed to be for the kids?”
Dazai shrugs. “It’s a public space, isn’t it?”
Chuuya’s frown deepens, but he relents. “I guess I’ll just do a quick little drawing.”
But Chuuya’s a try hard at heart, and his drawing ends up having a radius of about three feet. It’s of the kingdom’s symbol, the sun created by intricate, swirling designs, along with purple designs branching out around it. When he finishes, his arms are covered with chalk almost up to his elbows. People gape at it as they walk by, giving him smiles of approval.
“I guess I’ll just do a quick little drawing,” Dazai mocks.
Chuuya rubs his chalk covered hands all over the brunet’s face and clothes.
Dazai’s buying them food when Chuuya sees it.
It’s a large mosaic of what Chuuya assumes to be the royal family due to the crowns resting on each member’s head. A woman with strawberry blonde hair stands to the left, dressed in a luxurious peach gown, while a man with dark brown hair stands right next to her. In the Queen’s arms is a baby with fire red hair, blue eyes wide and innocent. Chuuya scrunches his eyebrows as he tilts his head to the side, examining the picture. People move around him to place flowers in front of the mosaic, the amount of flowers so large bouquets are stacked on top of one another.
“It’s for the missing prince,” a voice says, startling him, and he turns to see a young boy with a patch of white in his dark hair, clutching a somewhat creepy looking doll in his hands. The boy smiles up at him sweetly.
Chuuya watches as the boy stares longingly at people placing flowers upon flowers in front of the mosaic. He reaches into his hair to pull out some roses, handing them to the little boy. “Here,” he says abruptly, “take them.”
The boy’s eyes widen in excitement, eagerly grabbing the flowers. “Thank you!” He exclaims, moving to leave them down before rushing away.
Chuuya watches the boy’s receding figure till it disappears, before turning back to look at the mosaic. He frowns as he studies the Prince’s face. He feels a weird sense of familiarity over the image of the royal family, and it unsettles him.
The sound of a violin bursts through the air, snapping him out of his thoughts as he turns to see a trio of musicians beginning to play music. He watches in amusement as he sees a freckled blond boy dressed in overalls begin to dance, the straw hat hanging from his neck flapping up and down from his movements. The boy makes eye contact with him, eyes brightening, and before Chuuya knows it, the boy has grabbed his hands and dragged him into the center of the plaza.
“H-Hey—”
“Don’t worry, sir!” The boy chirps, giving him a wide, reassuring smile as he leads Chuuya through the steps. “Just have fun!” With that, the boy moves to drag people into the center, people eventually joining in on their own will as they see the commotion grow, and soon Chuuya feels himself passed from partner to partner as more people begin to dance, occasionally stumbling over his feet in an effort to keep up. As he begins to learn the steps, he feels himself smiling.
He hears a snicker, and turns to see Dazai looking at him with a teasing expression, a bag of food in his arms. Kunikida is the brunet’s side while Akutagawa resting on the horse’s saddle. Chuuya raises an eyebrow, eyes glinting with a challenge as he motions Dazai to join in.
Dazai begins to shake his head, but Kunikida pushes the man into the circle, causing the man to stumble and drop his food, a woman quickly grabbing his arm and claiming him as a dance partner. Chuuya laughs at the image of Dazai scowling at the horse before he links arms with another dance partner, taking his attention off the brunet for now.
People begin to clap to the beat. Chuuya feels himself begin to sweat. He makes eye contact with Dazai, the other holding out a hand, and Chuuya grins as he moves to link arms with the other. Before they reach each other though, they’re swept away by another partner, and they give each other a knowing smile before turning to focus on their new partner.
Chuuya feels himself get caught up in the music and movement, his braid swinging back and forth as he moves. He spins around, before suddenly he’s face to face with Dazai, the other holding him by the waist as they interlock hands. The music ends, and Chuuya suddenly notices that the sun is already setting—had that much time already passed?
Him and Dazai stare at each other for a moment, and Chuuya studies the faint flush in the other’s cheeks, tired from all the dancing.
“It’s time!” Someone shouts, and the crowd quickly disperses. Dazai releases his hold on him, and the two of them break apart. Chuuya suddenly feels timid, glancing away from the other’s intense gaze.
The realization hits him, causing him to snap his gaze back to the brunet. “It’s time?” He asks the other, eyes widening.
Dazai smiles. “Let’s go get your dream, little Chuuya.”
“A boat?” Chuuya asks, frowning as Dazai holds out a hand to him. He is currently standing in a small canoe, Akutagawa resting on his shoulder. Despite his question, the redhead moves to step onto the boat, though he ignores Dazai’s helping hand, making him chuckle. As he begins to untie the boat from the dock, he glances over at Kunikida. The horse is currently watching them from the dock, looking a little downcast over being left behind. Dazai feels a small smile spread through his lips, as he throws a bag of apples to the other.
The horse eyes the bag skeptically.
“Oh come on, Kunikida, show some faith in me,” Dazai exclaims, “I bought them!”
At this, the horse relents, beginning to eat.
“Most of them, that is~” He calls out, smirking as Kunikida stiffens.
“Where are we going?” Chuuya asks him as he begins to row. He stops for a moment to reach a hand up to Akutagawa, the chameleon crawling into his hand so he can take him off his shoulder and onto a ledge.
“Well, since little Chuuya has been so greedy today I’d thought I’d spoil you some more with a good spot,” he says, making the redhead cross his arms with a huff, though a sheepish expression appears on his face.
“You were just as eager to buy me things, you lying piece of shit,” Chuuya snaps back.
“I never said I wasn’t,” he responds.
By the time Dazai deems them further away enough from shore, the sun has already set. He turns the boat so that it’s parallel to the shoreline, and the two of them gaze at the castle. For a moment, there’s nothing but the sound of moving water, their canoe gently rocking with the small waves. Dazai spends a good amount of time studying the way the moonlight shines on Chuuya’s skin.
He breaks the quiet first. “Why do you want to go back, Chuuya?”
The redhead stiffens, turning his gaze to him before looking away towards the castle again. “There’s a girl who needs me. She’s sick, and if I don’t help her, she’ll die.” His expression remains carefully blank. “And… they are my family.”
Dazai doesn’t respond. He already has inklings of what really is Chuuya’s situation—the redhead is probably being used, is probably having his power exploited, is probably not even Mori’s child at all. He has indications of a theory, of a plan in his mind that he’s not sure how to implement yet. There are just too many coincidences in Chuuya’s situation—having the same birthday as the long lost prince, having matching characteristics, being locked away in a tower where no one could find him…
“What about you?” Chuuya asks, shaking Dazai out of his thoughts, “why do you wanna die?”
“There is nothing that makes me want to keep living,” he answers without hesitation. The smile on his face is automatic.
He watches Chuuya’s blank expression change into concern. Oh dear. So Chuuya really does care about him now. He isn’t sure how to feel about that.
They settle back into silence again. Dazai continues to study Chuuya out of the corner of his eye. The redhead increasingly looks more distressed as seconds tick by, lips twisting into a frown. He moves his hand to poke the other in the space between his eyebrows.
“Wh-What are you doing, bandaged bastard?” Chuuya barks, scowling.
Dazai grins, resting his chin in his palm. “You looked so upset it ruined your pretty face.” He admires the way his words cause the redhead to flush crimson.
The redhead mumbles and grumbles curses to himself under his breath, making Dazai’s smile turn more fond. “Are you worried that the lanterns won’t meet your expectations?” He asks, causing the other to turn his head towards him sharply in surprise. “Because they will.”
“...Then what the fuck am I supposed to do after?” Chuuya questions, catching Dazai off guard. “This is...the only thing I’ve ever wanted. So now what?”
Dazai stares at him for a moment, before releasing a small snort of laughter. “Oh, Chuuya, what a dumb question.”
As expected, Chuuya immediately fires up with anger. “Huh? What do you mean, you asshole?”
Dazai just smiles wider. “Once you get this dream, you get to find a new dream, of course!”
Chuuya blinks, staring at him with wide eyes. Dazai takes a moment to appreciate the shades of blue in his eyes.
“A new dream, huh,” the redhead murmurs, expression softening.
Dazai wonders why the other’s expression is suddenly so bittersweet.
“It’s time, Your Highness,” a blonde lady says softly as she enters the Queen’s room. Kouyou turns to look at her, expression somber.
“Thank you, Higuchi,” she replies, checking her appearance one last time. Her hair was twisted in an intricate knot, her lips painted a dark red. As she stands, she gives the younger woman a forced smile.
“To think that he’s eighteen already…”
Higuchi rests her hand on the older woman’s shoulder for comfort.
Kouyou walks out the castle balcony with an elegant flourish, staring out into the distance as she sees her people crowded together, watching as she readies her lantern.
Before she releases her lantern into the air, she watches the flames flicker behind the paper, the glow reflecting in her eyes. She clasps her hands together, shutting her eyes and mumbling a few quick prayers, before pushing the lantern up towards the sky. She watches as the crowd below her follows, the night becoming lit up by a warm glow as the message is spread throughout the entire kingdom, hundreds of lanterns filling the air.
Kouyou watches the sky and mourns for everything she's lost.
Chuuya feels Dazai’s gaze on him like a flame close to his skin. He’s currently resting his head on his arms on the side of the boat, picking the flowers from Dazai’s palm that the brunet had collected from his hair. He places them into the water, watching them float.
“The flowers really were too much,” he mumbles to himself, only to stiffen at the feeling of the brunet tucking a stray strand of hair behind Chuuya’s ear, gently brushing Chuuya’s cheek in the process.
“Those kids would be quite upset to hear that,” Dazai replies, the burn of his gaze still ever present. Chuuya snorts.
While Dazai’s gaze is intense, surprisingly, it doesn’t bother him. Occasionally, he looks up to make eye contact with the other’s brown eyes, only to feel a burst of something surge through his veins, making him feel warm.
If he only wants the satchel, he wouldn’t look at me like that, right?
As he places a peach blossom into the water, he immediately tenses as he sees the reflection of a yellow glow in the water. He snaps his head up, eyes widening as he sees the first lantern float through the sky.
Abruptly, he moves, almost tilting the boat over as he stands up and wobbles over to the end of the canoe, closer to the lantern. He watches in awe as more and more lanterns begin to rise into the air, rising from the castle, village, and even ships docked away at the harbor. The kingdom almost looks engulfed with them as more and more continue to rise, the sight so wonderful Chuuya’s not even sure what to do with himself.
I'm finally here, he thinks to himself, as the lanterns begin to descend over the water, surrounding their canoe with a warm glow as hundreds of lanterns approach them. He feels Akutagawa crawl up to his shoulder, nudging his neck affectionately, and he smiles down at the chameleon, stroking his back. I’ve done it.
He's finally here, is finally in the place where he's wanted to be all his life, and the emotions he feels are indescribable. He's happy, he's invigorated, he's in shock, he feels like wanting to cry. Everything is all he'd ever wanted and more.
Now that he thinks about it, this whole day, this whole adventure has been unbelievably wonderful it's almost as if it were a dream. He has loved every bit of it: the ruffians at the inn, the thrill of being chased,  the travel through the forest, meeting Kunikida, exploring the town, and Dazai.
And…
And Dazai…
He slowly turns around to look at the brunet, only to find Dazai staring back at him, one lantern in each of his hands. The light of the lanterns make his dark hair and eyes glow bronze. He holds out a hand up to his shoulder, moving Akutagawa to the edge of the boat before sitting back down in front of Dazai.
“I have a surprise for you too,” Chuuya says, grabbing the satchel from its hiding place. He holds it out to Dazai, keeping his head down. “I’m sorry for forcing you through this. Thanks for all you’ve done for me, I guess.”
His words are spoken like a goodbye, something he knows Dazai picks up on. He watches Dazai’s hands as the brunet moves the lantern in his right hand to his left hand before his right grabs the satchel, discarding it to the side. Chuuya’s eyes widen, but he refuses to look up.
“Chuuya,” Dazai says softly, “I never cared about that crown.”
This makes him snap his head up. “Then why did you steal it, you waste of space?” Chuuya retorts, though it lacks any sort of bite.
The brunet shrugs, smiling his ditzy grin. “It was something to do.”
This answer makes him frown. “Then am I just something to do, too?” He bites back.
Dazai pauses. “Little Chuuya,” Dazai begins, “I get bored kind of easily, you know? Would I really spend this much time and money on you if you were just something to pass the time with?”
He scoffs. “You’re unbelievable,” he huffs, though a hint of smile appears on his lips, relief evident on his face. He grabs the other lantern out of Dazai’s hand. “I hate you.”
“Yes, yes, whatever you say, Chuuya.”
They release their lanterns at the same time, watching them float into the air until they were indiscernible from the hundreds of other lanterns. Chuuya turns his body to continue observing the lanterns. He feels Dazai’s gaze on him again, but like before, he doesn’t really mind. This time, he turns his head to gaze back at the other, raising an eyebrow.
Dazai doesn't falter. Instead he keeps looking at Chuuya with the same intense expression, and suddenly Chuuya feels a bit flustered. He isn’t sure how long they stay that way, staring at each  other.
“Chuuya,” Dazai says softly, grabbing his hands and pulling him closer.
“W-What is it?” He says sharply, but the way his voice wavers gives him away. Dazai reaches up to tuck some stray strands of hair behind his ear before moving to gently rest on the back of his neck, and he feels his heart shake as Dazai gives him a small smile before leaning in.
His eyes flutter shut, and he tilts his head up, waiting to meet Dazai’s lips in the middle. After a few moments of nothing happening, he begins to feel a bit awkward. Is Dazai just taking his time or…?
He slowly opens his eyes, only to see that something has caught Dazai’s attention off in the distance. He frowns at the other’s suddenly dark expression. “What’s wrong?” He asks, turning to see what the other is looking at, but Dazai quickly grabs his shoulder, preventing him from seeing. “Nothing to worry your pretty little head over, Chuuya,” Dazai chirps. “I just saw something strange, is it okay if we go check it out?”
Dazai’s already picking up the oars, rowing them away from the kingdom, towards the forest they had traveled through. “Sure,” Chuuya answers hesitantly, though only one imminent thought runs through his head:
Something has gone wrong.
Dazai feels a dark, twisted emotion rise within him as he moves the canoe towards shore, the image of Fyodor, illuminated by the green light from his lantern, eyeing him maliciously from shore burns behind his eyelids. Fyodor had been spying on them, had been following them, had been seeing every moment Dazai spent with Chuuya and it makes Dazai want to stab the man in the throat. A determination to end this quickly surfaces his inner turmoil. He knows Fyodor wants the crown, knows Fyodor hates him for betraying him, and knows that if he gives Fyodor what he wants he’ll probably be able to end this. Though he knows Fyodor probably has about the same number of backup plans whirring through his mind as he does.
They reach the shore in a few minutes. Dazai pushes the canoe high enough onto the sand so that the waves won’t take it away.
“Shuuji,” Chuuya begins, stepping off the boat, voice hinting a warning. “Tell me what's wrong.”
For a moment, Dazai considers telling the other, but the thought is as fleeting as the flap of a bird’s wings. Chuuya would insist on going, but he’d only be a hindrance, a distraction, an obvious weak point for Fyodor to poke at. He barely knows what Chuuya is to him right now, but he does know that if something were to happen, he wouldn’t hesitate drawing his knife.
And he’s not sure if Chuuya would enjoy to see the side of him that has blood on his hands.
“I just need to do something,” he says, reaching into the boat to grab the satchel. The worried look in Chuuya’s eyes almost makes him want to stop his ploy. He begins to turn around, about to move. “I’ll be right back—”
Chuuya grabs his wrist, stopping his movements. Dazai turns around to look at the redhead. Chuuya doesn’t speak, just looks at him with what could be a either a challenge or a faint plea, and he feels his heart shake with something warm.
He gently twists his wrist out of the redhead’s grip, grabbing the other’s hand and giving the back of his hand a kiss. “I’ll be right back, Chuuya,” he reassures, giving the redhead’s hand a faint squeeze.
He releases the redhead’s hand and walks away. Chuuya doesn’t stop him.
“I see that your sense in fashion hasn’t changed,” Dazai chirps as he approaches the black haired man, eyeing the other’s ushanka. “Now, I know how amazing it is to have my attention, but did you really need to be so dramatic about this?”
Fyodor doesn’t take the bait, instead just looking at Dazai expectantly.
Dazai holds out the satchel, but doesn’t make any moves to hand it over. “What did you really come here for?”
Fyodor smiles. “What makes you think I want something else?”
He chuckles. “There are hundreds of crowns to steal from. Even if you wanted revenge on me, there are other ways to do so. So, let me guess, you’ve found a way to forever get me out of your hair, and maybe break me in the process.”
Fyodor tilts his head. “And how do you know that?”
He grins darkly. “Because it’s what I’d do.”
Fyodor’s eyes light up with amusement. “Very well,” he replies. “I want him.”
Before Dazai can even react to the statement, he feels a spark of pain on the side of his head, and everything fades to darkness.
Chuuya continues to stare out into the distance. Mist has started to form over the lake and onto the shore as the air begins to chill, making it hard to see anything past a few feet. Akutagawa nudges his cheek worriedly.
It’s been a while.
“It’s fine, Ryuunosuke,” Chuuya reassures, though inwardly he’s just as frazzled. “He’ll be back soon.”
As if on cue, he begins to see a figure in the distance, and he squints in an attempt to see better through the fog, relief rushing through him. “For fucks sake, you bandaged piece of shit, what took so long? If you left me for good I would’ve tracked you down and killed you.”
The figure comes closer, and Chuuya feels wariness rise within him as the figure’s features become more distinct. Suddenly he realizes that the man was too scrawny, that the man is wearing some sort of hat on his head, that the man isn’t Dazai at all.
As the man comes into view, Chuuya tenses, realizing that it’s the same man Chuuya kicked in the face during their escape from the tunnel. His purple eyes study him with a disconcerting interest.  “You poor thing,” the man coos, “I’m afraid that he did.” He motions his head to the side, causing Chuuya to turn and look into the water.
He watches as a boat slowly comes into view, rising out of the mist, a figure steering it.
“...Shuuji?” He questions softly, feeling himself beginning to panic. “Shuuji!” He shouts.
“Oh? Is that his real name?” Fyodor questions, tilting his head in amusement. “I’m surprised he allowed you two to become so close, though I suppose you still weren’t enough to keep his interest.” He smiles, reaching a hand up to Chuuya’s cheek and forcing his gaze towards him. “Though I suppose you do have a pretty face.”
Chuuya snarls, jerking away from Fyodor’s grip, only to freeze at the feeling of a knife pressed to his throat. “Fair trade, isn’t it?  A crown for the boy with the magic hair… surely people will pay well for the power of staying young and healthy forever.”
Chuuya kicks the man’s kneecap, causing him to stagger, and he quickly slips out of the man’s grasp, beginning to run. He hears the man run after him after a few seconds, and begins to pick up speed.
His hair snags onto a log, causing him to cry out as it tugs harshly at his scalp. He begins to tug at it desperately, the man’s footsteps coming closer, before suddenly a loud gasp of pain is heard, along with the thump of a falling body.
“Chuuya!”
His eyes widen. “Rintarou?” He questions, moving back to examine what happened. He feels his entire body relax with relief as he sees Mori standing there, a tree branch in his hands while the other man lays unconscious on the floor.
“Chuuya,” Mori breathes, quickly moving to engulf Chuuya into a hug. “Are you alright? Are hurt anywhere?” The man questions, moving back to study Chuuya in an almost frantic manner.
“I’m fine,” he replies, “how did you—”
“I was worried,” Mori answers, running his hands through Chuuya’s hair before resting them on his shoulders. “So I followed you, and it’s a good thing I did. Now let’s go, Chuuya, before he wakes up.” He grabs Chuuya’s hand and begins to pull him along.
Chuuya stops, turning around to look out into the water, at the ship slowly making it’s way across the sea. He feels his eyes beginning to burn with tears, and he clenches his fists, refusing to let any fall.
He feels a hand on his shoulder and he slowly turns around, letting Mori see his reddened eyes. “You were right, Rintarou,” he chokes out.
“I know,” Mori murmurs, pulling Chuuya into a hug, “I know.”
Dazai wakes up with a start, eyes immediately snapping open to study his surroundings. He’s tied up onto a ship, the crown securely tied to his grasp, the boat rhythmically bumping into the castle’s harbor.
“Chuuya,” he gasps out, immediately recalling the previous events, beginning to struggle within his bonds. He hears guards begin to approach the boat.
I’ve been fooled.
The guards cut him out of the rope, roughly grabbing him and dragging him along. He struggles in vain. “Look, there’s a boy who needs help—”
“Shut up!” A guard hisses, hitting him roughly in the gut, making him gasp out in pain.
Unbeknownst to Dazai, Kunikida watches the entire exchange from his spot on the other harbor. Eyes filled with worry, turns his gaze towards the sea, eyeing the forest.
Where was Chuuya?

They are not moved to the main section because: 1) Corresponding constellations are generally unclear. This includes Compass, because there's already a Rashinban (Nautical Compass / Pyxis). For now, it is correlated to constellation Circinus instead. 2) In case of Jougi and Choukoku, official numberings are also unclear. 3) Saidan is pretty much confirmed to be the Altar Constellation, but for now it stays on the Unclear Section until official image is released. 2017.03.07 - Column "Owner" has been renamed into "User". - The text "Kyutama Set" has all been updated into "DX Kyutama Set". - Information for Three Kyutama has been updated (order by official number): Washi, Kani, Koguma. - Ouguma has been moved into a separate item with #12. - Information for Three Kyutama on the Details Unclear/Uncomplete Section has been updated (order by possible official number): Otome, Ite, Mizugame. 2017.03.21 - Information for Two Kyutama has been updated (order by official number): Pegasus, Kujira. - Cassiopeia was moved to the main section with a confirmed #38. 2017.03.28 - Information for Aries Kyutama has been updated. - Mizugame, Kujaku and Ex-Aid was moved to the main section with a confirmed #28, #32 and #KR respectively. - Shishi-Kajiki was renamed into Kyuranger and moved to the main section with a confirmed #SP. 2017.03.29 - Information for Koguma (Lesser Bear) has been updated with its confirmed user. - Information for Ouguma (Greater Bear) has been corrected with a confirmed #22 and its original user. - Rashinban (Nautical Compass) and Tobiuo were moved to the main section with a confirmed #19 and #44 respectively. - Cup, Usagi (Hare), Ro (Oar/Furnace), and Tomo (Poop Deck) have been moved from the Not Yet Confirmed to the main section with a confirmed #64, #68, #83 and #88 respectively. - Ho (Sails) and Ryuukotsu (Keel) have been moved from the Not Yet Confirmed to the Unclear/Uncomplete Section. Along with Tomo, these are parts of the legendary Argo Navis. NOTE: This is another massive update! Considering the growing quantity, the overall look for this Update List has been reformatted for ease of reading. Also, until they are confirmed, empty rows on the chart main section have been omitted from the chart. 2017.04.03 - Information for Four Kyutama has been updated (order by official number): Ryuu (Dragon), Rashinban (Nautical Compass), Uo (Pisces), and Futago (Gemini). - Source section has been modified. 2017.04.04 - Information for Two Kyutama has been updated (order by official number): Ryuu (Dragon), Rashinban (Nautical Compass). - Choukoku has been updated into Choukokushitsu (Sculptor) - Five Kyutama were moved from Not Yet Confirmed to the Unclear/Uncomplete Section, because their inclusion have been confirmed via the Ryu Tsueder gadget: Reticule, Gaka (Easel), Rokubungi (Sextant), Hachibungi (Octant), and Choukokugu (Chisel). They are not moved to the main section because official colors nor numberings are unknown for now. NOTE: 11 Kyutama are confirmed to be specifically compatible with Ryu Tsueder from its instruction sheet. You can view this on Wotafa's Review from the timestamp of 13:10 to 16:00. Just like Argo Navis, this constellation no longer exists in the 88 Modern ones. 2017.04.12 - The text "Core" has all been updated into "Change Kyutama". - Information for Two Kyutama have been updated (order by official number): Houou (Phoenix), Saikou (Supreme). - Orion has been moved to the Not Yet Confirmed section because apparently it's a Power Up that utilizes Saikou (Supreme) instead. - Jougi (Carpenter's Level), Compass, and Saidan (Altar) have been moved to the main section because their data have been confirmed. - Tokei (Pendulum), Kaminoke (Berenice's Hair), Argo, and Kerberos (Cerberus) have been moved to the main section with a confirmed #15, # 34, #89, and #111 2017.04.18 - Information for Four Kyutama have been updated (order by official number): Tate (Shield), Tokage (Lizard), Kenbikyou (Microscope), and Ryouken (Hound). 2017.04.25 - Information for Six Kyutama have been updated (order by official number): Rashinban (Nautical Compass), Mizugame (Aquarius), Cup, Usagi (Hare), Ro (Furnace), and Tomo (Poop deck). 2017.04.28 - Information for Two Kyutama have been updated (order by official number): Ushikai (Herdsman), Tobiuo (Flying Fish). - Tokei (Pendulum) has been moved to the Unclear/Uncomplete Section because apparently the numbering was mistaken. - Otome (Virgo) has been moved to the main section because it has been confirmed. - Yagi (Capricorn), Ite (Sagittarius), and Ho (Sails) have been moved to the main section with a confirmed #29, #35, and #86 respectively. - Koto (Harp) and Hato (Dove) have been moved from Not Yet Confirmed to the main section with a confirmed #55 and #58. - Ryuukotsu (Keel) has been given a temporary #87, considering it's part of the three Argo Navis lineup. 2017.05.01 - Information for Two Kyutama have been updated (order by official number): Hebi (Snakes), Kyuranger. 2017.05.02 - Tokei (Pendulum) has been returned to the main section with a confirmed #14. Ryuu Voyager!
Onto Ryuu Voyager, who is super long. Like, it’s not the biggest Zord I have, but it’s certainly the longest.
The Good: Ryuu Voyager is a pretty good example of gimmick accentuation. It’s able to do the same job and take on a very similar form to Shishi Voyager while incorporating legs and having its own transformation. I also like the way it transforms, folding in half in order to take on a humanoid form.
The Bad: Not every Voyager can swap places into certain spots with RyuTei KyuRen-Oh. You’re basically stuck with Ookami, Oushi, or Koguma as legs. You can use Chameleon or Kajiki, but they’re a bit shorter than the other three so they don’t look as good. Also, the ones that make good legs can’t shoulder mount well, as they hit KyuRen-Oh’s shoulders. If you angle the arms, everyone can be used as arms, but you can’t use everyone stock straight.
The Ugly: RyuTei KyuRen-Oh is an extremely boring combination. Even the on-screen costume of it is boring. In fact, I wouldn’t call it a combination at all. It’s more an upgrade for KyuRen-Oh, rather than a merging of the two separate Megazords. If you look at King Shurikenjin and Wild Jyuoh King you’ll see that they incorporate their components very well as well as modifying the face of the starter Megazord. RyuTei-Oh merely becomes a backpack, the only real incorporation being the dragon helmet becoming an unconvincing chest plate.
It wouldn’t have been that unfeasible to have Ryuu Voyager split into extensions for the limbs that hook into the Kyutama slots on Shishi Voyager, then have the usual limbs hook onto those. I would have just been happy if there was a dumb face mask that flips out of the top of the dragon mask and sits on KyuRen-Oh’s face. That alone would have made the combination a ton better. At least it all holds together well.
And worst of all, RyuTei KyuRen-Oh is 8 Zords. Eight. Would it have been that hard to hook Washi Voyager to the back and make it nine!?
Overall, I really like RyuTei-Oh and Ryuu Voyager, but the 2nd Quarter combination is very lazy, not helped by the fact that the 3rd Quarter combo uses none of the previous Voyagers.
