Higashiyama district and Kiyomizu-dera

There is a lot to say about this day. First of all, the Higashiyama district is this huge neighbourhood that has a lot of food stores, toys, souvenirs, food, sweets, restaurants, Japanese delicacies, museums, temples, shrines and food. Especially free food samples. That is always important.

I actually don't remember eating anything that day despite all the food I could have bought there, eating was never on my priority list, my friends can confirm that.

I liked Kyoto because you could get anywhere in a matter of minutes. We got on a bus on Kyoto Station and after 20 minutes we got off the bus and found a way to the street that lead to the Kiyomizu-dera. On the way there we saw an old man doing some noodles for the Udon we were going to eat later.

It's easy to get lost if you don't have a map and there is a lot to see so it's better to plan ahead.

Most temples are located in the mountains so eventually you'll have a panoramic view of the city below and it's always nice to spot the Kyoto Tower afar. (On the photo below).

The entrance to the temple costs ¥600 and you can ring a bell and stuff, it's pretty cool. I saw a monk chanting uninterruptedly and it was pretty awesome. A friend of mine said that there is a part of the temple where everything is dark and you have to follow a handrail to a opening in the ceiling that shows the sunlight. After that you walk out of the temple and go to a water fountain to throw some water in yourself. This is supposed to mean the rebirth of oneself. 

It's pretty easy to loose track of time walking in the trails and streets and it is really easy to slip and fall a flight of stairs so please be careful, you probably won't have a bunch of Japanese kids asking if you're okay and giving you band-aids to make sure you are going to be well. (I honestly almost cried when that happened). They're cute.

Climbing down the mountain you can see a lot more alleys and streets that lead   to other stores and more restaurants and museums and food stores, all very traditional and a bit expensive.

If you think this is Buddha you are absolutely wrong. The statue above is a homage to the Unknown Soldier, a entity that represents all the soldiers lost in the battlefield that were never found. You pay a ¥200 fee to get inside and that's about it.
