The colors of my country, the colors of a bruise with fifty stars to signify that no one's born to lose And the gifts that we've been given come bestowed by tired hands, tied to no known race, religion, nor native of this land And I am falling into a freedom trail high as any mountain range as yet unknown and I am falling into a freedom cheer now celebrating all the many things that I hold dear So I celebrate this freedom and I celebrate my home And I celebrate this fenced in land that we are standing on Oh, I celebrate and celebrate and celebrate again And I use this day to celebrate my thick American skin Meanwhile the fate of all the world is knocking at the door and we say "This is private property! Don't come 'round here no more!" And we are falling into a freedom trail Deep as any goldmine as yet unshown and we are falling into a freedom fear Afraid of losing all the many things that we hold dear The colors of my country, the colors of a bruise, a bloody mess to glorify the red, the white, the blue and this fight that we are fighting I fear will help no future day and only hinder Lady Liberty as she wanders on her way This fight that we are fighting I know will help no future day and only hinder all of us as we wander on our way May we please not hinder Lady Liberty Wandering on her way

For as long as he can remember, Ryan Montbleau’s been a seeker. From the jungles of Peru to the volcanoes of Hawaii, from the beaches of Costa Rica to the streets of Brooklyn, from the backseat of a 16-passenger van to backstage at Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed singer/songwriter has spent much of his life crisscrossing the globe on a perpetual search for meaning, purpose, and understanding. It’s a quest that’s guided him both personally and professionally over the years, one that’s come to define not only his music but his very sense of self. And yet, listening to Montbleau’s ambitious new multi-part album, Wood, Fire, Water, and Air, there is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting still, a recognition that perhaps all those spiritual treasures he’s been chasing for so long were closer than he thought.
“My whole adult life has been this journey of trying to figure out where home is,” Montbleau reflects. “I think I’ve finally found it.”
Set to roll out across four distinct EPs, Wood, Fire, Water, and Air marks Montbleau’s first studio release since putting down permanent roots in Burlington, Vermont, where he recently purchased a house after more than two decades of living on the road. While much of the material here was written in fits and starts over the past several years, it’s clear that the desire for stability was very much on Montbleau’s mind even before he settled on the banks of Lake Champlain, and the songs reflect maturity and self-awareness that can only come from the difficult work of rigorous self-examination. Montbleau is quick to credit therapy for his growth of late, but he sings about more than just himself here, mixing sly humour and deep revelations as he meditates on the ties that bind all of us perfectly imperfect humans together. Taken as a whole, it’s a broad, insightful collection balancing boisterous rock and roll energy with intimate folk introspection, a sprawling, magnetic record all about listening, letting go, and living life.
“I’ve been through a lot over these past few years,” says Montbleau, “and I’ve experienced some monumental shifts in my perspective. The only way for me to write about it was to just get as honest and vulnerable as I could.”
Honesty and vulnerability have been hallmarks of Montbleau’s career since the early 2000’s when he first began performing around his native Massachusetts. In the years to come, he’d go on to collaborate with artists as diverse as Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty, Tall Heights, and Galactic, and rack up more than 100 million streams on Spotify alone. Along the way, Montbleau would share bills with stars like Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ani DiFranco, The Wood Brothers, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Mavis Staples, but it was his ecstatic headline shows—often more than 200 of them a year—that solidified his reputation as a roots-rock powerhouse and an inexorable road warrior. NPR’s Mountain Stage compared his “eloquent, soulful songwriting” to Bill Withers and James Taylor, while Relix celebrated his “poetic Americana,” and The Boston Herald raved that “he’s made a career of confident, danceable positivity.”
That positivity would serve Montbleau well on the long and winding road to Wood, Fire, Water, and Air. Work on the record first began in the summer of 2019 at the gorgeous Guilford Sound studio in southern Vermont, where Montbleau and producer Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Rayland Baxter) laid down basic tracks with a rotating cast of players. At the time, Montbleau had little idea what he was getting himself into.
“I honestly didn’t know what this project was going to be for a very long time,” he explains. “All I knew was that I had a bunch of songs I was really excited about and that I wanted to take a new approach to record them.”
For much of his career, Montbleau had worked fast and loose in the studio, capturing music as raw and organically as possible. This time around, though, he found himself craving a bolder, more fully realized sound, and by the time he finished basic tracking in Guilford, it was clear that his work had only just begun. What followed was a yearlong odyssey of adding, subtracting, revising, and reimagining, as Montbleau and mixer/engineer James Bridges fleshed out the sessions with a broad array of instruments, textures, and colours.
“It took a long time for me to get to a place where I could trust myself enough to stretch out like this,” says Montbleau, who experimented with synthesizers and drum machines and added piano and mandolin to his repertoire for the project. “I’d always kind of deferred to other people’s expertise in the studio, but learning to trust my ears and get my hands dirty with the music was a totally empowering experience.”
As the songs took shape, it became clear to Montbleau that there were discrete themes at work within the larger collection, both sonically and emotionally. Rather than release the entire 15-track record all at once, then, he decided he would unveil the album more deliberately over the course of four separate EPs, each inspired by an element of the natural world. First up: Wood, a rustic, earthy trio of tracks taking stock of just what it means to be human in these bewildering times. Songs like the playful “Perfect” and soulful “Ankles” wrap weighty ruminations inside deceptively lighthearted packages, and the spare, stripped-down arrangements make for an ideal bridge between Montbleau’s earlier work and the more adventurous sounds to come on the album’s second instalment, Fire. Infused with infectious energy and feel-good pop optimism, Fire showcases the rock and roll side of Montbleau’s personality, celebrating the joy and liberation that comes with learning to live in the moment.
“The songs on Fire were a chance for me to just let loose and have fun,” says Montbleau. “They were an opportunity to not overthink things for a change, to trust my gut and follow what felt good.”
The arrival of Water quickly cools things down, though, bringing the music back to Earth with a more sober, meditative quality. Montbleau wrote several of the tracks while doing medicine work in Peru, and the healing, regenerative nature of that trip is obvious on songs like the dreamy “Forgiveness,” which features extensive keyboard contributions from avant-garde icon John Medeski. By the time we reach the album’s final chapter, Air, Montbleau seems to have found peace within himself, coming to terms with the transient, fleeting nature of our existence. “Just know that you are not alone,” he sings on “The Dust,” “and that’s all you get to know now.”
“Even though COVID kind of upended everything with my career, this past year has been a rare chance for me to stay put for a while and focus on what really matters,” says Montbleau, who recently invited his girlfriend and her daughter to move in with him in Burlington. “I feel like I finally have a real family life now, and I’m living on stable ground for the first time.”
That doesn’t mean the hunt for purpose and meaning is over. Ryan Montbleau will always be a seeker, and that’s alright. As Wood, Fire, Water, and Air so beautifully demonstrates, sometimes the search is its own reward.

The Weight Band Performs “Rock of Ages” at the Colonial Theater
By Rob Nagy
Celebrating the legacy of The Band, The Weight Band returns to the Colonial Theater to perform the classic 1972 live album “Rock of Ages”. Lead by former Band Alumn, Jim Weider (guitar, mandolin & vocals), their line-up features Michael Bram (drums & vocals), Brian Mitchell (keyboards & vocals), Matt Zeiner (keyboard & vocals) and Albert Rogers (bass and vocals), fans can expect to hear the classics, “The Weight”, “Up On Cripple Creek”, “Rag Mama Rag”, and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, among many other memorable songs.
“I was at This show in 1971, recalls Weider. “It was the first time I heard The Band with Horns, it was amazing! It was a defining moment of The Band’s musical history! We will do the songs on Rock of Ages and some of the Dylan outtakes. We have a great horn section so it will be a blast!”
“We see it as carrying on the legacy of The Bands Music," adds Weider. "That's another reason we did an original album, these classic songs should be heard. We want to keep this music style alive, its the Woodstock sound we grew up with."
Formed in 2013, The Weight Band has rapidly become a musical presence capturing the essence of the American roots rock and roll. The Chicago Sun-Times declared, “The Weight Band carries on where The Band left off”.
The Weight Band released their critically acclaimed debut album, World Gone Mad, in 2018. The Boston Globe proclaims World Gone Mad "strikes a chord between past & present”. Goldman Magazine praised the release as one of the best indie albums of 2018, saying the group “effectively revives and recreates The Band’s original rustic sound as a successor and keeps that arcane spirit alive!”
Jim Weider, was a member of The Band From 1985 to 2000, replacing the legendary Robbie Robertson. As their lead guitarist, he was a vital creative component in the reconfigured line up. He appears on the albums Jericho, High on the Hog, and Jubilation. Weider has toured internationally with Band members Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm. Drummer Michael Bram splits his time between The Weight Band and Jason Mraz. Keyboardist Brian Mitchell has worked with Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Al Green, and B.B. King. Keyboardist Matt Zeiner has performed with Dicky Betts (The Allman Brothers) and produced and/or written for Jeff Pevar, Melvin Sparks, Zach Deputy, Ryan Montbleau, Jaimoe (Allman Brothers). Bassist Albert Rogers has performed with Dicky Betts, Levin Helm, Garth Hudson, and Albert Lee.
“Everyone in The Band has been supportive," says Weider. "I didn’t want to do this at first but when we did the first couple of shows with Garth Hudson and Jimmy Vivino I said ‘ok, let's do this and people really loved it.’ We want to bring back memories and have the songs touch people the way they have touched all of us in The Weight Band.”
The Weight Band performs at the Colonial Theater, 227 Bridge St, Phoenixville, PA 19460, on Friday, December 27, 2019, at 8:00 P.M. For tickets call (610) 917-1228 or visit www.thecolonialtheater.com

Strangecreek this year was nothing short of pure love and happiness. I went up with my love who played in a few diff bands throughout the weekend, got to see some old favorites and made some amazing new friends as well. Had a moment of home at Ryan Montbleaus acoustic set at Riverworm stage. Ryans music will always and forever be a staple for my Camp Keewanee experience. His music captured my heart at my very first wormtown and now those weird wild woods will always be home. Sunday night sitting in the dirt rolling and watching my man play the keys with his trio at Vernville surrounded by people i love will go down as a time i felt pure happiness and love. ☀💜🌸😊

Ryan Montbleau and Grayson Erhard at Globe Hall
Globe Hall is an awesome restaurant and music venue in RiNo. The historic red brick building has always been home to various taverns and the like. In 2015, Globe Hall moved in and began selling out shows, hosting a huge variety of touring and local acts. The well-worn bar has as much character as the bands that take the stage and the award winning Texas-style BBQ goes great with the cheap drinks. Saturday, September 28th, Globe Hall welcomes the Ryan Montbleau Band and Grayson Erhard.
Montbleau began playing shows in his hometown of Boston in the early 2000s, quickly working his way up to the House of Blues. Joined by Matt Giannaros on bass, Laurence Scudder on viola and backup vocals, Jason Cohen on the keys and clarinet, and percussionist James Cohen, the band went on to release twelve albums. Over the past couple of decades, they’ve built a loyal fan base, writing and performing original music based on love, vulnerability, and strength. Montbleau likes to keep things interesting, collaborating with numerous artists including Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty, Tall Heights, and Galactic. He’s shared stages with Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ani DeFranco, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Mavis Staples and numerous others. For his latest release, Woodstock Sessions, he was joined by cellist Paul Wright and guitarist Tim Harrington of Tall Heights. The album was recorded in front of a live studio audience and features ten songs and three previously unreleased tracks. After a successful national tour promoting the album, Montbleau hit the road again with his band, selling out shows across the northeast in the spring. Now they’re stopping in Denver on a limited fall tour.
Grayson Erhard is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Del Norte, Colorado. His music showcases a heavily technical and complex style of guitar playing paired with airy vocals. He walks a line between performing as a musician’s musician and the writing world of pop, creating a sound that weaves between complement and contrast. Erhard became a viral sensation after sharing a stage with the legendary Stevie Wonder, but the fame didn’t go to his head. Erhard stays true to his small-town valley roots with an authentic, organic sound. His most recent collection of music, EARTHSHIP, came to life in Taos, New Mexico, and was co-written by Bannigrin. It drifts from folky to hard rock, incorporating a percussive fingerstyle previously foreign to both genres. The album features five tracks done with a full band and is accompanied by a stripped-down version of each song to honor the style long-time fans have come to love. Don’t forget to pick up the album and check out more of his work at graysonerhard.com.
This show brings together a really talented and diverse group of musicians guaranteed to impress. Come down for some dancing and drinks! Globe Hall is located at 4483 Logan Street in RiNo. Tickets are on sale now at globehall.com.

Ryan Montbleau has been an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and bandleader for more than a decade, but with his new album I WAS JUST LEAVING, the New England-based artist has truly arrived. Contemplative and richly emotive, the album offers a glimpse into the often-lonesome life of the relentlessly traveling troubadour, a strikingly single-minded existence too often clouded by the blur of constant motion. Recorded at New Orleans Esplanade Studios over four days in January 2016 with producer Anders Osborne and engineer/mixer Mark Howard (known for his work with such icons as Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Neil Young, and U2), the album marks Montbleaus first full length release in the wake of a series of seismic personal shifts. Songs like Bright Side and the touching title track reveal a uniquely blessed artist who has truly found his voice, his gift for melody and a remarkably open-armed approach.
There’s no part of this record that I am unsure of, Montbleau says. All the juice of the last fifteen years is in there. My humanity and my heart are on this record.
Montbleau has been among Americas finest songwriters and performers, earning national attention and a fervent fan following with songs like 75 and Sunny and his breakthrough cover of Tracy Chapmans Fast Car, the latter a Spotify smash with total streams now in excess of 14 million.
After twelve years on the road Montbleau found himself at a crossroads in 2016. Within a very short time, my world got flipped around. My partner was gone, my band of ten years was gone, my friends were all far away. The one thing I had was a career, because it turns out that was all I had worked on. When the dust settled, I realized I didnt really have much of a home life.
I thought all along that I had been building a home but it turned out I was just leaving. Thats where the title of the song and the record came from. So many raw feelings were just aching through me at that point. Eventually they vibrated out through the guitar, through singing. I had to sing these songs.
An artists artist, Montbleau has collaborated with such diverse performers as Martin Sexton, Trombone Shorty, and Galactic. His association with Anders Osborne extends back to 2012 when the New Orleans-based singer/songwriter/guitarist played on Ryans Ben Ellman-produced FOR HIGHER alongside such fellow Big Easy icons as Ivan Neville and The Meters George Porter, Jr. Two years later, Anders and Ryan reconnected on the road backstage at a festival. The seeds were planted for a collaboration.
Montbleaus guitar playing and vocals are both front and center on I WAS JUST LEAVING, with Osborne accompanying on drums, percussion, bass, guitar, and harmonica, each used simply and sparsely for maximum effect. Osborne and Howard built upon that same goal, creating space and capturing rawness by utilizing as many early takes as possible.
Bright Side, the albums first single, is perhaps the song most emblematic of Montbleaus growth as both a human being and artist. At once finely etched and strikingly direct, Bright Side is an ideal distillation of his approach to songwriting, balancing multiple shades of emotional nuance with a fearless, unfettered sentimentality that ultimately leads to a greater truth.
I WAS JUST LEAVING marks a singular milestone for Ryan Montbleau, the moment in which this exceptional singer, songwriter, and performer has blossomed into a fully matured artist.
Ive been planting these seeds for so long and it has all led up to this moment. It feels like finally the fruits of all my efforts are coming out. Im still working hard but theres an ease to whats happening. I have a career that Ive built, that Ive earned. Now whats fun is putting out the best music I can and seeing what happens.
Jason Scaggs is a man with many instruments and many musical influences. If you listen closely you can hear his Appalachian boyhood in Roanoke, Virginia, some raucous Boulder, Colorado flavor and a swirl of Vermont inspiration for good measure. Taking pride in his thoughtful lyrics and unique melodies, Jason's songs are mesmerizing, drawing you into his vision. His songwriting ranges from Folk to Bluegrass to Alt Rock. Smooth transitions from banjo, to guitar, to baritone guitar make for an exciting ride and when coupled with his smooth vocals, his performance will leave you wanting to hear more.

Scaggs is probably most well known for his work in the regionally touring band Jatoba. There he was 1/3 of a foot-stomping, rowdy and dizzying non-traditional bluegrass trio. He is currently focusing on his duo “The Big Empty” (https://www.facebook.com/bigemptymusic/) with Jeff Richardson, also formerly of Jatoba.
