i’m pretty sure the answer’s yes but its just gotten to the point i’m embarrassed to ask. shut up

“Just, clarifying question.” He piped again, crunching himself to sit up a bit but the dizziness of the blood leaving his head made him resume the upside down position again.

The young lady nodded at the young page as he passed her by. It was only after he had walked past her that those blue eyes were paired up with a name. One of her dear brother Elrik's friends, one of Sir Hakon's sons. Well, he was apparently on a mission. As was she. Estrid had to run home to give her parents the happy news.

She had been chosen to be nanny to Prince Magni and the Lady Jennifer's children.

His phone finally buzzed with something which Gabriel is ready to be more nothing, but it isn’t and he sprang to his feet while Bernadette gurgled from the tummy-time pillow she rested on in displeasure.

His instinct that something was very wrong, had been very right only now he had something-

He had a location. To do something about it.

He’s almost off to the races, speeding for the door about to throw on his jacket and call to his boyfriend that he was off to find them—

When he halted in his steps with his jacket still half on. no, no. come on, what’s wrong with you?

what happened to planning ahead, dipshit? what kind of fucking plan can you make with a location, people to save, and no other details?

how about use your fuckin head and think about the annoying questions Henry or Josh would ask him, without saying the right answer.

Gabriel runs back to the bedroom closet to find the gun that Josh left behind and showed him how to assemble. He does, clicks the safety on.

Stows it in his jacket, because who knows if he’ll be able to rely on his abilities? plan ahead

i use my powers to scare them into telling me where they are and if fear doesn’t work, ill need to not hesitate to use pain, and then ill just double up on therapy appointments to deal with that-

and THEN once I’m fully in without being caught, i either sneak them out (ideal), use my powers to bust them out with fire (less ideal and also risky), or i’ve already scared the shit out of whoever’s holding them so bad, they let us walk out clean

“..s’nice.” Good to hear they were doing well.

Gabriel didn’t think he was so easy to read, that the reassurance would be offered. But even asking the question, how they all were doing—

after what i did. what are they all living with now?? a community that made him feel safe, and understood

they’d nearly burned for it.

He welcomed the shift in topic, ignoring the topic of blame, because he didn’t think he had anything good to add there,

“It’s good. It’s, really good.” He bounced his knee. “i go stay there too sometimes, it’s..” What did Rue’s parents see, every time they looked at him? the same thing i do sometimes?

“It’s good.” His hands fidgeted in his lap. “We’re, happy. For some reason he wanted me back.” A flash of a grin. because he’s stuck? because of the connection, because i brought him back?

“I keep getting these dreams.

About my powers coming back.”

“—They don’t blame you. None of them.

It hasn’t been easy, but the staff and students know what happened. We’ve rebuilt. They’re alright, most graduated now.”

A pause. “It looks like you’ve rebuilt too.”

A very good thing to see. A relief.

As much as he wanted to rush to the young warrior in greeting, Magni knew it was most important to give the family sufficient space. To let them hold their son and rejoice, fully soak in the relief of this moment.

But in the background.. there were still other things. Jennifer and Gabriel who had vanished. The matter of the memories…

So eventually, a soft tap on the door, and the prince’s tired and worried eyes found Rúne awake in the bed. “Sorry to disturb.” He murmured, but was all relief. He’d already shed his share of tears both happy and sad outside of the room, so.. hopefully he would be able to keep those at bay for a while.

“How are you feeling?” He asked the young man. “I’ve come to ask.. what you remember, of what happened before you fell.

Apologies, again, but it is important.” And urgent that they know.

He listened to what the young man was saying, to his frustration, desperation. None of it was anything that the elder Asgardian could free him from.

“You never should have had to endure this.” He exhaled, knowing that Rúne knew this already. It was too much, and for someone of his age..

What state had all of this left his heart in? To die and come back, and die and come back.

“And I can’t pretend to know what that is like.” The only other person who might, seemed to be the last person that Rúne would want to speak to. “Gabriel might, but..”

So what to do.

“All I know is that to push it down will not make it go away. It will be right there to meet you, whether you are ready or not.”

He watched him uneasily for a while. “Is there anyone you have been able to share these feelings with?” His parents? Friends? Elias maybe?

What he hoped was a solution was instead a pitying look and disappointment. Was there no way to get rid of this?

Difficult when you are young. Yes, everything now seemed a whole lot more troublesome. Why?

“No.” talk to them? “I hear him enough as it is..” he turned his head away, arm coming to drop to his side, before fully turning to step away from the prince. Their back to them now, the rise and fall of his shoulders showed the deep breath the pulled in and the breath he let out.

“I do not know what there is to say. Months of living apart, I have.. my life now. My family,” he paused. “Maybe they were right, my mother and father. This is what they were protecting me from.” The pain, of two people too different from each other.

Was it not so?

He turned back to the prince. “You have lived to know, there must be a way. Surely, someone that came before.. Before you met Lady Jennifer.”

What Rúne was asking him, severing a connection.. no one liked to hear that time was the answer. Better than any other answer, because rather than severing some channel of communication.. it was a little more akin to letting go, wasn’t it? Like falling out of love or learning to live with a loss. 

“I can tell you that it doesn’t do to ignore it.” He sighed, lowered himself back down to sit. 

“I’ve.. lived a long life, Rúne. Of course, there were others before Jennifer.” The prince nodded. He’d loved, and lost. “Perhaps it won’t be of reassurance to know that the connection stays. 

Even after they do, sometimes. Three hundred years later and if I try.. there it is.” He hadn’t shared much of this, but he didn’t think he had to. Some things were allowed to be just for him. He gave a small smile. 

“It goes both ways. But it isn’t painful. It changes. 

You cannot.. try and numb yourself, to this sort of thing. Do you understand?” He asked gently. “Do you recall, feeling him this strongly before it all happened?”

She flattened Rune to the ground and put her hands on his chest, a pulse of electricity arcing between them.

There was no change. A second time and a third.

She looked over at Gabe, just as the pages closed in.

“I don’t know Gabe, I didn’t go to the mountain the last time you went! Please! Those hags mean business. They’re not to be messed around with. You can’t do this again!”

If he remembered…the boy would die.

“He’s gone Gabe.” It came out as a whisper and she reached for Gabe’s hand.

Everything was screaming. 

Everything, his mind his body the universe around Gabriel seemed to stop spinning and cry out that this was wrong, and everything moving so slowly as JJ shocked Rue again and again, and he didn’t move.

He couldn’t hear her, nor the calls from the healers and pages who were fast approaching, and she reached for his hand but just as quickly Gabriel was up on his feet, pulling in air fast. 

the mountain the mountain it was far, it was too- 

and then he laid eyes upon the stables, and bolted. “LJÓTR-” He remembered the other’s voice, calling out- as they raced across the rainbow bridge.

The scene she came upon made her blood run cold. The very thing she'd been working against was playing out right in front of her eyes.

No no no no no "Gabe........what did you do?" she moaned.

It only took her a moment before training kicked in and she was on autopilot. Numb.

She was kneeling down, hands on the blond's wrist to feel for a pulse. "Gabe-" She set her phone on the grass and looked into those anguished hazel eyes. And she gently pulled Gabe's hands loose so she could try and help the young Asgardian.

Their time was up.

Gabe nodded.

He did feel a little gratitude, for her filling the silence. That he didn’t have to speak as much. He wouldn’t know what to say. He never felt less like talking.

“…He loves them, but.. I dunno.” He looked up at her. He hadn’t answered any of their letters. What they had put him through, and the desperate unhappiness he’d seen in Rúne’s eyes that day he found him, the day of the wedding.

“He wouldn’t wanna hurt them.” Not Rue. He was too good. “But they hurt him bad.

I don’t think he knows what he’d say to them.”

He’d heard the other boy’s promise. To go with him, anywhere. 

But he was also aware that his life had already been uprooted, that he’d left everything behind. Gabe wasn’t going to make any choice like this without him. “He hasn’t talked to his family at all, they’re all here.” He shook his head. 

“Gotta see what he wants, right?” He looked up at Moira, a tired smile. 

“You have a whole life ahead of you. Together. There’s no need to make a permanent decision right now.“ she said by way of encouragement. “But yes, would be wise to ask him. You are both part of each other’s lives..”

By now she was just talking to say something, to fill the silence, to get the boy away from the thoughts in his head that she knew could be very damning.

“You think he’ll want to speak to them?“

He wasn’t leaving the party yet, not completely. But a breather was needed, he could tell. So it wasn’t an ‘Irish Exit’ when he ducked out discreetly down one of the hedged paths, to some more secluded part of the garden.

With the sun coming down and casting everything in a mix of golds and even blues, pinks and purples hanging above in the most fantastic kind of sunset, he found himself a mossy stone bench to sit on, one of the smaller fountains splashing behind him, where floated green water, duckweed, and Lily pads.

He heard footsteps,

and there he was again. The silver haired Asgardian passing through, and for a split second Gabriel held his breath in hopes of not being seen. coward.

but something in him goes ahead and speaks without his permission.

“hey.” a nod, a passing greeting. but it’s followed up with, “you leaving?”
