Do you have any recommendations for TTRPGs that emulate JRPGs well, or have a very JRPG-like setting? I find the unself-conscious mixing of fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk elements that's commonplace in JRPGs very appealing, as well as the inventive combat and advancement mechanics (for reference I am playing the first Trails in the Sky game right now and I am enjoying it very much).
You've got several distinct questions there, though you may not realise it, and I'm going to tackle them in order.
First, with respect to emulating JRPGs and JRPG-like settings at the tabletop, it's hard to go wrong with, well, actual tabletop JRPGs. While English localisations of Japanese tabletop roleplaying games are admittedly thin on the ground, there are a few of them out there, including official translations of Double Cross, Golden Sky Stories, Ryuutama – Natural Fantasy Roleplay, Shinobigami, and Tenra Bansho Zero, as well as the odd partial fan-translation, of which Meikyuu Kingdom and Nechronica are probably the most notable. (No direct links to the latter two because fan-translation is technically piracy, though I'm sure you can chase them down on your own if sufficiently inclined!) There are a lot of cultural assumptions about what an RPG is and how it ought to work that aren't going to come across in an Anglophone author's attempt at genre emulation, so you'd be well served to go straight to the source.
(I vaguely recall that there are also a couple of Japanese indie RPG authors self-publishing their works in English via itch.io, though it’s late and names escape me at the moment – if anyone reading this can point us in the right direction, please do!)
Second, with respect to emulating the steampunk science-fantasy settings that Western fandoms often associate with JRPGs (though they're far from universal within the genre – their apparent prevalence is more a reflection of what gets localised than of the genre as a whole), the above-cited Tenra Bansho Zero will give you that in spades, though it's also one of the most rules-heavy entries on that list. If you have a specific desire to play in a game where the party consists of a cursed samurai, a child mecha pilot, a Shinto MiB, an oni Jedi knight, and Robocop, that it'll do.
If you'd prefer something less crunch-heavy, or more American-style in its game design approach, you might alternatively have a look at Anima Prime. It's not a localised title, but its lighter and more familiar approach may be an easier sell for your group than dropping Tenra Bansho Zero's seven hundred page rulebook on them. Aesthetically, it sits somewhere near the RWBY-meets-Final Fantasy XIII intersection.
Finally, with respect to emulating the combat of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky specifically, that’s a tough one – I don’t think any Japanese tabletop RPGs with proper grid-based tactical combat have workable English localisations at the moment, even taking fan-translations into account. In terms of non-localised games, I’d probably go with something like Valor; it’s basically an anime-themed Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition clone, but then, most games that focus tightly on grid-based tactical combat are to varying degrees these days – D&D4E is extremely good at what it does, the protestations of certain vocal grognards who don’t approve of what it does notwithstanding.

Some fun RWBY lore I just remembered: This was ONLY covered in RWBY: The Grimm Campaign (a tabletop RPG campaign that the creators of the show livestreamed), but Ruby's and Yang's Uncle Qrow is actually famous.
He has fans around the world.
Nobody in the show who doesn't know him personally ever seems to recognize him.
He is the Tony Hawk of Remnant.
Beautiful.

I say your Atlas Inter Universal Template and I love it! It reminded me of a concept we had in a RWBY Tabletop RPG server we had to playtest Paradigm's rulebook: each game master had their own universe and the main plot was people having the ability to travel between them. Have you ever played any RWBY TTRPG games before, with dice rolls and character sheets? (It's the best!)
No I haven’t played any TTRPG games yet!

Is "creative soulmates" an applicable term?
I believe so, even more so when I refer to a player at my RPG table who is also someone I write fanfics with. Well, as you can see, this is another post about the magic of the tabletop RPG. Two weeks ago, I mastered yet another origination session, and this time it was for my remaining player from the old table. I must remember that it was she who convinced me to go back to GMing through a recap of everything that had happened the other time and, above all, with new ideas for her character. We changed a lot, starting with a new homebrew race that encompasses creatures with animal characteristics (our inspiration came from the fauns of RWBY) and with that, also came a new goddess... But, that's my thing as DM. Let's talk about her as a player. She always surprises me with how demanding she is with her characters, I always thought her character at the other table was amazing, but she felt inconsistent in some ways and so I helped her. We worked together on establishing new attributes, including multiclassing her previous class (she's coming with a spellcaster that I already broke in the source session) and that tied in perfectly with the new BG she wrote. Before, a deserting soldier who constantly fled from the oppressive empire that forced her to enlist, even if it meant leaving someone important behind. Now, a soldier victim of a war for no reason, who needs to fight PTSD while wanting to return home and find who she left behind... But years have passed, new domains have been established and things have happened without her knowing. The current character is much denser than the previous one, which makes her connection with the Raven Queen extremely important (after all, she has issues with destiny and, mainly, with another domain of the goddess). I tried to encompass all of this in her session, starting with a dream in which I worked on the concepts of the "thread of fate" and also the Japanese legend of the "red thread". We went through years and years of lore, covered with images that didn't say much, with symbolisms that made sense to her as a player... We talked about heavy topics, such as psychological aggression, violence (torture), trauma, grief... And all this taking place in a dream, traveling along a black and white forest road that began with fire and ended at the river. We closed the cycle of that character's life while another one began... And she woke up to the sound of the voice of an NPC that we had already seen in previous sessions. Her character, a soldier, allowed herself to be taken care of her whole life and decided, on her own, that she needed to act. Of course there are MANY things in this character's BG that I haven't even addressed, but I'm really happy to have the player back with me. And here comes what I put in the title of this text: the connection I have with her is only explained through the brevity of soulmates (Platonic, I must say). She is incredible, as is her character and, most importantly, the NPC we both fell in love with. A cutscene-only NPC, unnamed, looking at the moon through a telescope. A high elf enchanted by the stars who tries to reverse time to find those who left her behind... One day, I left my player and friend behind, but she defied fate and insisted on bringing me back. All I can say is thank you: thank you for letting me roll the dice with you again.

OC sketches/concepts from 2020
The first two concepts are from a RWBY self insert/oc/dumb warrior baby that I made for a RWBY tabletop rpg with friends (Which is dead and buried before it could even begin). And yeah sorry I love Ozpin and all of his wasted potential (Same could be said for every RWBY character though). Her name was Leontius (Not to be confused with my other oc with the same surname, Cain Leontios 🙂, yeah), and though we were supposed to make students back then, I always viewed her as a graduated huntress. Her sword is traced from Zero's sword from Drakengard 3. edit 29/08/2023: I decided to alter her name as to not confuse her for Cain. I gave her the provisory name 'Roza', but I might change it. (I wanted to name her something related to rusalochka, but I don't want to misuse the tag that could be used for the wonderful russian animation) Also fun fact; we were supposed to roll a D100 to have a special ability, and I got Spring Maiden ...😀 wtf
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And these girls are concepts for a idol management/dating sim parody game in which I am not sure I'm ever going to do. Still, I really like them.

After many years i have finally finished a drawing. And of course it's my RWBY DnD group at a fair that hasn't happened yet... I started this like. Months ago... I deadass had all the lineart done for like, most of the thing. Then while trying to learn a new way to color and finishing with details I just kept getting more and more ideas that required me to make something like the little Beowolf targets which I love. Where are my Grimm plushies, RT? That idea is FREE

Hey, what are y'all gonna do on the Max & RWBY podcast once you run out of show to talk about? Like, once we enter another hiatus or the show has just ended. (My two cents: there's a pretty good fan-made RWBY tabletop RPG out there...)
Ok do people REALLY want a D&D podcast with Max & RWBY panelists because I can't tell if that's an actual common opinion among the people who listen to the podcast or if it's like the same two dudes leaving comments on every episode

Okay yeah I’m really into the RWBY Grimm Campaign so far
It helps that the episodes are not very long - one reason I couldn’t get into most weekly tabletop RPG shows was because each episode is, like, 3 or 4 hours of uncut gaming and I was always hesitant on making the time investment (the exception is The Adventure Zone since each episode was about an hour long), but the episodes in this show so far have been pretty engaging and easy to follow
Also the characters are great and I love them. They have collectively one brain cell and in a game where actions are determined by a dice roll it just paves way for some great comedic moments
Anyway stream the Grimm Campaign

Hey, can I get some recommendations for a tabletop RPG that could support Pokemon-style gameplay? Managing multiple ‘characters’, factoring in random encounters, building up a story rather than solely being about combat, etc. Thanks!
Sure thing.
If you’re in the market for a rules-light option to ease into it, you might have a look at Pokéthulhu 3rd Edition. It’s admittedly a parody game – as the title suggests, it’s about taming various miniature Cthulhu Mythos beasties – but it’s a very solid one, and it does more with less mechanical heft than most “serious” examples of the type. Notable for having one of the very few tabletop RPG combat systems that’s well suited to running one on one duels.
On the flip side, if not everybody in your group is interested in playing a trainer-type character, you could check out Anima Prime. Its core competency is really more Final Fantasy XIII than Pokémon, but it will handily support trainer/summoner type characters alongside RWBY-style weapon masters, battle wizards, and such. The big drawback is that it may be more combat-centric than you’d like; it frames scenarios as a connected series of tactical set-pieces, with freeform RP scenes serving mostly as a way to recover resources between fights.
(The preceding two recommendations have free versions available. For everything below this parenthetical, you’ll have to pay.)
If you’d prefer something less indie and more traditional, you might look into MajiMonsters. This one will give you type matchup grids and crunchy move-lists and everything you’d expect from a full-featured tabletop Pokémon clone. Far warning, though: it’s very much not a pick-up-and-play game. In terms of its learning curve it’s about on par with the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons, so unless you’re interested in making Pokémon-style games your group’s main focus, it may not be worth the investment.
In terms of forthcoming games, if comedy style body horror isn’t a turn-off for you, you might check out Mortasheen, which is just wrapping up its crowdfunding campaign at the time of this posting. (Full disclosure: I’m a backer.) The linked Kickstarter page will give you the full sales pitch; it’s created by Tumblr’s own @bogleech, so if you have any questions, they’d be best equipped to answer them!
Finally, I’m going to throw in a rec for Monsters and Other Childish Things. I suspect it’s not really what you have in mind, as player characters are limited to one monster apiece, but I’ve had more fun with its monster creation mechanics than I have with any other game in the genre. It’s also a good one if you want some serious relationship drama to go with your monster taming, as the monsters literally feed on relationship drama to power themselves up.

Bumbleby Fic Links
Forty-four fics and 115,451 words later, I went and figured out how series work on Ao3. And figured I should create a reference post to stick in the Umzamo Index.
General Bumbleby Index on Ao3: If you want to read everything RWBY that I’ve written, this is what you want. Especially if you want to read things in chronological order.
Game Nights at Beacon Academy: watch RWBY and JNPR (and technically Sun at one point) play all kinds of games, from tabletop RPGs to wargames to card games to video games. They’ve got a lot to relax from, okay?
Bees and the Beach: See Yang in a bikini. See Blake in a bikini. See Tai in a... wait a minute.
Bees in Bed: SNUGGLES FOR THE SNUGGLE GOD. (Angst for the angst throne.)
The Weissian Conspiracy: See sad Bees. See Weiss think. See Weiss scheme. See happy Bees. Good job, Weiss.

This was really nice. I like how it does sound like a good melody while at the same time exhibiting some of the pattern-defying nature of the tune. 🙂
I think you miiiight have jumped to conclusions from an ask that simply asked you if you could list the Traveler’s cape and civilian names. Miiight have. Also, I’m pretty sure most of them where refered to by their civilian names in previous arcs.
It’s certainly possible.
It’s not so much that I jumped to the conclusion as that the ask opened my eyes to the possibility of it, which I hadn’t considered before. From there, I had to reevaluate things and consider how things would change if it turned out I had gotten the two mixed up. Ultimately I think I’d prefer for Cody to be Ballistic, but I’m still not sure either way (even with this ask heavily implying it’s Luke).
As for names, most of their names did show up (all the more reason for an ask about matching names to capes being kind of odd if it wasn’t trying to set me thinking of something), but I can’t recall Ballistic’s being one of them. But you know how my memory can be.
That smurf song you posted definitely says “dab dab dab” several times, despite the video being uploaded to YouTube in 2009, and the song supposedly being from 1978. So that’s suspicious as hell.
I… think that has to be the bits where it actually says “tramp, tramp, tramp på en smurf” (“stomp, stomp, stomp on a smurf”).
Either way, now we’re all forced to consider the concept of the Smurfs dabbing, so thanks for that. 😛
“Dragonberry” was Scarfgirl’s old character on City of Heroes, a MMORPG with a superhero theme that no longer exists. I know you’re not reading the chapter comments, but if you ever go back to read the early ones, you’ll see that quite a lot of the early readers were City of Heroes players who had an interest in superhero fiction. That’s why Scarfgirl’s art is signed “Dragonberry”, because it’s how people knew her back then.
Ah, interesting. Fun to hear a little about the fandom’s early history. 🙂
I’ve had many names, myself. Once upon a time I used to make a different name, if not more, for just about every site I was on. One of the names that stuck with me the most was Elementarion, which I used in the game Godville and a few other places (not every Elementarion that comes up on Google now is me, though), because I found long-time friends while using that name.
Though for some reason I wonder why 😛, nobody seemed to want to type it out every time they wanted to mention me. I’ve been called almost every short form of Elementarion there is. El was the most common (made watching Stranger Things kinda odd the first time around, even though I’d long abandoned the name), but I’ve been called Ele, Elem, Eleme, Elemen, Element…
A couple other highlights I remember were Hiatus (in a browser game I don’t remember the name of), OldHeavens (NewGrounds) and Barbute (ArmorGames).
It wasn’t until I came up with Krix Jace, later Krixwell Jace, that I started stabilizing my name.
1. Do you think people ever submit misleading questions just to fuck with you?
Some, probably. And that might be a good thing — if there are some asks that deliberately imply things that are wrong, it makes it harder to trust accidental implications of things that are right.
2. Have you ever noticed that Danny and Eidolon have never been in a scene together?
Hmmmmmm 🤔
Still no Travelers interlude… do you still think you’ll get one, or has this dashed your hopes?
Ahaha
Yeah, no, I’m counting this as everything I asked for and more. 😛

K6BD ask
My favorite part is the Master of Aesthetic saying “she is an idiot, and a loathsome schemer!” and YISUN is all “YEP, YOU GOT THAT ONE RIGHT 😀 😀 :D”. With Aesma standing right there.
YISUN is the type of person who has “precious trash babies” in every fandom they’re in. 😛
I feel like you all need to know, even if you don’t care about MLP:FiM, that the final episode of the show proved us all wrong.
The show’s resident Skitter is not Queen Chrysalis, the villainous, scheming ruler of a hive full of insect ponies.
Nor is it Twilight Sparkle, the mainest character and socially awkward brainiac who leads a team of five other main characters and always does her research if she can.
No, because of this one episode, it becomes clear:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s Rarity.
Okay, that’s just a joke, Twilight is still the best fit among the Mane Six, but Rarity using spiders for her fashion did immediately make me think of Taylor.
Twilight – Taylor
Applejack – Brian
Rainbow Dash – Rachel
Rarity – Lisa
Fluttershy – Alec??
Pinkie Pie – Aisha??
(Spike – Shatterbird??????)
K6BD patron comments
1. “What happened to Hansa” is addressed in the Prim story so that’s still out there if you want to know.
Ahh. That would explain why it was left unexplained in Aesma, aside from acting as a noodle incident if you haven’t read Prim.
2. As you observed, the word “demon” has appeared very rarely in the comic, outside of epic title drops & an instance where drunk Allison used it in place of “devil”. It’s used in some of the bonus texts but without a clear definition. Can you speculate further on what it might mean?
The priests seem to call Aesma a demon in the sense of a being of evil, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a definition that’s relevant to the comic’s title (and what appears to be Allison’s “name” in some sense, though the Demiurges do seem to have misinterpreted other parts of the prophecy and Zoss didn’t unambiguously use it as a name). It may be more about inner demons, Allison killing her fears, doubts and insecurities as she grows into the role of a king/queen of the cosmos. Six billion might be hyperbole, in that case, but still.
Alternatively, the prophecy and name might actually refer to Zaid, who could easily end up being the final villain of this thing even if he’s not actually Zoss’ intended successor. In that case, “six billion demons” might refer to humans, if Zaid gets really nasty with his own species. We know very little about Zaid’s base personality beyond “kinda sleazy boyfriend”, so a lot of developments are plausible on that front.
Though there are other parts of the prophecy, as well as illustrations, that do fairly clearly indicate Kill Six Billion Demons is Allison and will be flanked by White Chain and Ciocie, so it referring to Zaid is unlikely.
3. I think the author once said that there are still Aesma-worshippers active in Throne. What do you think they’re like and what would she think of them?
(Somehow the flesh sellars come to mind.)
Well, clearly they’d be Slytherins, if they understand her teachings. Aesma might treat them as ants, if she were still around, but bask in their adoration.
4. Kalpa — a Hindu / Buddhist concept meaning a really fucking long time. Besides in the story you just read, the term has also appeared in the comic at least once so far.
Good to know. I think I kind of just assumed it was Throne’s equivalent of a year, however long it might be.
5. Panopticon — a prison design envisioned by philospopher Jeremy Bentham, allowing all prisoners to be observed from a central point.
