Two more articles on US history after this one, so here's the second worst President of the Victorian Age:
Rutherfraud B. Hayes was the President who legitimately did steal an election, claiming it from the rightful winner Samuel Tilden. The irony is not that a Tilden Administration wouldn't have been more brutal, it's that the Bourbon Democrats made a truly corrupt bargain with Hayes that secured his Presidency in the wake of a narrow miss with a brand new civil war in 1877. White Americans agreed that betraying the rights of Black Americans was a price worth paying, and in turn Hayes was the man under which the Republican Party completed its transition from the Party of Lincoln to the party of James G. Blaine, with all that meant for the politics of the Victorian Age and the virtual exclusion of the Democratic Party from the Presidency. By every objective standard his Presidency was a disaster and a point where the American political system failed a test that it has never measured up to since.

Rutherford B. Hayes's election was so tight and close that when he won people believed he cheated somehow. He got the nicknames "Rutherfraud" and "His Fraudulency" because of that.
