when you started dating jack in sophomore year there was no denying that he would end up playing professional hockey. and when you were just as serious halfway through senior year you decided you would follow him anywhere; and anywhere ended up being new jersey. jack was playing with the ndtp and you were at johns hopkins studying psychology but when he was drafted it was easy enough to transfer to rutgers. when you got there you were assigned a dorm but started helping ellen help jack look for an apartment. throughout the process jack insisted that you found something you liked too because he wanted you to move in with him. and despite constantly asking “are you sure?”, the two of you found a nice two bedroom apartment halfway between his practice facility and the prudential center but still close to campus for you.

and things were going well. jack was living his dream and you were on your way to living yours. classes were going well and you went to games whenever you could. you were there for his debut and went to dinner with ellen, jim and luke after. and you were there for his first goal in a game against the canucks of all teams. you went out for dinner with his family after that game as well, but dinner was a shorter affair because the team wanted to take jack out to celebrate. everyone understood though and it worked out because ellen and jim got time to themselves while you, quinn, and luke got ice cream at a place near your apartment. at the end of the night you sent them back to the hotel in an uber and welcomed a slightly intoxicated jack back home. “you know i love you right?” jack asked as you were shuttling him to the bathroom. “yeah jacky, i know.” you respond, giggling as he turns to hug you, making the entire process of getting ready for bed harder. “okay good.” he says “gotta make sure you still do after tonight.” hearing that you pause slightly, not having a clue what he was talking about. but you don’t think too into it, assuming he’s referring to being drunk and needy.

but everything comes to light a few weeks later. the devils are on the road in california and after a game against anaheim you keep the tv on in the background as you clean your apartment. jack had texted that he was giving an interview after the game and you wanted to hear it. the game had been good for him, an assist and a goal late in the third that led to a devils win. the interview started normally, he was congratulated on the game and asked about the team; but the question that stook out to you was when the interviewer asked what being in the league had been like so far. his answer? “it’s been really good, it’s like i have a whole new perspective on everything.” as far as you were aware jack’s outlook on life hadn’t changed all that much, but you pushed it aside thinking that if something was really important jack would tell you himself. 

you were mistaken though because the next morning you woke up to what felt like hundreds of texts from everyone you knew. the one that stood out the most though was from pk subban. he had almost adopted the two of you when jack started with the team and had been there for everything you might need. the text simply read “i’m so sorry. i promise we tried to stop him.” sitting up you rubbed your eyes, confused, and scroll through the rest of your messages. they all loosely said the same things and contained the same screenshots. one from nico “he was drunk but that doesn’t excuse it. i’m here if you need anything.” a couple from your friends back home “he was stupid for that, call us asap.” and a couple in the groupchat you had with all of the hughes brothers. luke had seen it first, in the background of someone’s since deleted instagram story and texted quinn to confirm before immediately texting you. the message was simple, a screenshot captioned “jack what the hell?” quinn had responded with something similar and texted you separately to let you know that he wouldn’t choose jack’s side (if that’s what it came to). and jack hadn’t said anything.

for a full day after he cheated jack had no communication with you. no “i’m sorry” or “it was a mistake” not even an “i don’t regret it.” just radio silence. finally, after his third west coast game, on his way to the plane back home he texted “can we talk when i get back?” sighing to yourself you liked the message and went about your day. you weren’t exactly looking forward to the conversation that would inevitably end in a breakup. you had talked to your friends and parents, and everyone said that ending the relationship would probably be for the best. so, taking that into account, while he was on his flight across the country you were packing all of your things into suitcases and storage bins to move into the dorms. your roommate was in a bunch of your classes and when you didn’t initially move in she let you know that the room was always there if you needed a break. 

when most of your stuff was moved you sat on the couch, waiting for jack’s return home. and finally, just past one, you heard his key in the door. you listened as he took his shoes off and placed his keys on the rack ellen made you get. you followed his path further into the apartment via the familiar sounds of his routines until he eventually appeared in front of you. you nodded your hello and motioned for jack to sit on the couch. “so…” he started, trailing off and fidgeting with his fingers. “so?” you prompted, adding “you cheated on me” when jack seemed at a loss for words. “i’m sorry.” jack finally says. “i was drunk and wasn’t thinking. i shouldn’t have.” you nod, expecting him to continue, to say anything that feels genuine but that never comes. “i think we should break up.” you say, not wanting to drag the conversation out any further. jack’s head shoots up to look at you, eyes wide in shock. “what?” he asks. “why?” you almost laugh, “what do you mean ‘why’ jack?” you ask. “you kissed someone else.” at that jack shakes his head “i was drunk y/n, it can’t be that big of a deal.” then you can’t even be bothered to hold back your laugh. “it’s a pretty big deal to me jack.” you say, not getting how he doesn’t understand. “what if i kissed someone else?” 

“that’s different” jack say and you snap. “how the fuck is it different jack? how is me kissing someone else different than you kissing someone else? why is it okay for you to cheat but i can’t even bring it up?” you ask, standing up. “is this what you meant in that interview? is this your new perspective? whatever jack. we’re over.” hearing that makes it real to jack, “what? no, come on, let me fix this.” he says, standing up to face you again. and looking into his eyes you see pieces of the man you fell in love with, but no matter how much you want to cave you know you can’t. “you can’t fix it jack.” you admit, sighing softly, “i wish i could shut this all in the hall closet and drag you back down with me but i can’t. you will always be my first everything jack and i wouldn’t trade it for the world. i think this is gonna be good for both of us, and it’s not like you’ll never see me again. we’ll figure it out eventually, we’ll just be apart while we do it.”

The set's two Dutch films are co-starring Rutger Hauer, and Sylvia at the peak of her career. Submitted for the 1978 Academy Awards — Best Foreign Film, Wim Verstappen's Pastorale 1943 is a war drama centered on the Dutch resistance during World War II, and features also the debut of Renée Soutendijk. Painter turned director Paul de Lussanet’s romantic psychological drama Mysteries, based on the world famous novel by the Norwegian nobel prize winner Knut Hamsun and shot by renowned cinematographer Robby Müller, also stars Rita Tushingham and David Rappaport. Filmed and released right after Sylvia became one of the world's biggest stars as Emmanuelle (1974), Sigi Rothemund's 1974 film Julia is a German sex comedy drama, with Sylvia as a young boy’s first love, foreshadowing her later U.S. commercial hit Private Lessons.

Who was Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg graduated from Columbia Law School, going on to become a staunch courtroom advocate for the fair treatment of women and working with the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project. She was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1980 and appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993.

Early Life & Education

Ginsburg was born Joan Ruth Bader on March 15, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. The second daughter of Nathan and Celia Bader, she grew up in a low-income, working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn. Ginsburg's mother, who was a major influence in her life, taught her the value of independence and a good education.

Celia herself did not attend college, but instead worked in a garment factory to help pay for her brother's college education, an act of selflessness that forever impressed Ginsburg. At James Madison High School in Brooklyn, Ginsburg worked diligently and excelled in her studies. Sadly, her mother struggled with cancer throughout Ginsburg's high school years and died the day before Ginsburg's graduation.

Personal Life and Husband

Ginsburg earned her bachelor's degree in government from Cornell University in 1954, finishing first in her class. She married law student Martin D. Ginsburg that same year. The early years of their marriage were challenging, as their first child, Jane, was born shortly after Martin was drafted into the military in 1954. He served for two years and, after his discharge, the couple returned to Harvard, where Ginsburg also enrolled.

At Harvard, Ginsburg learned to balance life as a mother and her new role as a law student. She also encountered a very male-dominated, hostile environment, with only eight other females in her class of more than 500. The women were chided by the law school's dean for taking the places of qualified males. But Ginsburg pressed on and excelled academically, eventually becoming the first female member of the prestigious Harvard Law Review.

Arguing for Gender Equality

Then, another challenge: Martin contracted testicular cancer in 1956, requiring intensive treatment and rehabilitation. Ginsburg attended to her young daughter and convalescing husband, taking notes for him in classes while she continued her own law studies. Martin recovered, graduated from law school, and accepted a position at a New York law firm.

To join her husband in New York City, Ginsburg transferred to Columbia Law School, where she was elected to the school's law review. She graduated first in her class in 1959. Despite her outstanding academic record, however, Ginsburg continued to encounter gender discrimination while seeking employment after graduation.

After clerking for U.S. District Judge Edmund L. Palmieri (1959–61), Ginsburg taught at Rutgers University Law School (1963–72) and at Columbia (1972–80), where she became the school's first female tenured professor. During the 1970s, she also served as the director of the Women's Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, for which she argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court.

However, Ginsburg also believed that the law was gender-blind and all groups were entitled to equal rights. One of the five cases she won before the Supreme Court involved a portion of the Social Security Act that favored women over men because it granted certain benefits to widows but not widowers.

On the Supreme Court

In 1980 President Carter appointed Ginsburg to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. She served there until she was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 by President Clinton, selected to fill the seat vacated by Justice Byron White. President Clinton wanted a replacement with the intellect and political skills to deal with the more conservative members of the Court.

The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings were unusually friendly, despite frustration expressed by some senators over Ginsburg's evasive answers to hypothetical situations. Several expressed concern over how she could transition from social advocate to Supreme Court Justice. In the end, she was easily confirmed by the Senate, 96–3.

As a judge, Ginsburg favored caution, moderation and restraint. She was considered part of the Supreme Court's moderate-liberal bloc presenting a strong voice in favor of gender equality, the rights of workers and the separation of church and state. In 1996 Ginsburg wrote the Supreme Court's landmark decision in United States v. Virginia, which held that the state-supported Virginia Military Institute could not refuse to admit women. In 1999 she won the American Bar Association's Thurgood Marshall Award for her contributions to gender equality and civil rights.

Now, as millions move back to campus, hundreds of schools are mandating vaccines and penalizing students who resist without a medical or religious reason.

Quinnipiac University students who aren’t vaccinated will be fined up to $200 per week and lose access to the campus’ Wi-Fi until they get the shot. The University of Virginia booted more than 200 unvaccinated people from its rolls before the semester began. And Rutgers University, the first university in the U.S. to mandate vaccination for students, is threatening to disconnect email access and deny campus housing for students who don’t comply. Some colleges used similar tactics last year to get students to follow testing procedures.

The hard mandates, which put colleges on the front line of the nation’s newest culture war, could help decide when the latest resurgence of the virus subsides — and when the next one arrives.

“Higher!” Taylor, your son squealed as you picked him up and tossed him into the air. He knew that you could take him higher than you were, but you were being careful because your wife was watching you. Taylor was the spitting image of Julie with his blonde hair, blue eyes, and freckles. He was very fun and goofy, which Julie swore that he got from you. 

“They’re adorable,” Carli said, sitting next to Julie. You had met Julie in Chicago, during your first season with the WNBA team there. You were a Jersey native, so you had easily gotten along with the other Jersey girls on the national team. Carli, just happened to be one of them. It helped that you’d gone to the same high school and done events in the town together at the same time. You had started your college career at Rutgers, but then transferred to UConn your sophomore year for a full ride. 

“I’m sort of scared that she’s gonna drop him,” Julie said and Carli could see why. “That’s a long fall for a little guy.” 

“He lives to sit on her shoulders when I’m home,” Julie said and Carli chuckled. 

“Mommy watch!” Taylor yelled and Julie looked over at the two of you. “Okay, as high as you can Mama.” 

“Are you sure?” you asked and he nodded. You tossed him up really high and then caught him. He giggled and squealed when you set him down. He stumbled a little and Julie ran over towards you. 

“Wasn’t that so cool?” Taylor asked and Julie relaxed a little when she noticed he wasn’t scared or anything. 

“Yeah, but that’s a one time thing okay?” Julie’s tone wasn’t asking a question, it was telling you not to do that again. You nodded and looked down, causing Julie to sigh. “Both of you quit with that face. I swear you’re so childish sometimes.” 

“You love me,” you said and Julie nodded. You picked Julie up in your arms and leaned down to kiss her. You set her back on her feet and glanced over at Taylor. He ran into her legs in an attempt to tackle her, but it was you who ended up knocking her over. You were careful to watch out in order to not get anyone hurt. Taylor started tickling Julie’s stomach while you kissed her face and tickled her neck. 

“Stop it both of you!” Julie said in gasps as she laughed. “Y/n, call him off of me.” 

“I could, or I could... not.” You smirked at Julie, but you stopped tickling her. “Come on dude, let’s let Mama finish practice. We can get ice cream or something.” 

“We’re getting ice cream after practice,” Julie said and you shrugged. 

“Double ice cream?” Taylor asked and you nodded. 

“Absolutely,” you said and Julie rolled her eyes. “We’ll make sure to bring you something back, I promise.” 

“No need,” Julie said with a small smile. “I love you.” 

“I love you too,” you said, leaning in to kiss her. Julie gave you a couple quick pecks on the lips and then she gave Taylor a tight hug. “Tell Mommy bye.” 

“Bye-bye Mommy,” Taylor called out as you picked him up. 

“Bye kiddo,” Julie called back to him.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (/ˈbeɪdər ˈɡɪnzbɜːrɡ/; born Joan Ruth Bader) was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton on June 14, 1993 and had served since August 10, 1993. Ginsburg became the second of four female justices to be confirmed to the Court after Sandra Day O'Connor, the two others being Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, both of whom are still serving in 2020. Following O'Connor's retirement in 2006 and until Sotomayor joined the Court in 2009, she was the only female justice on the Supreme Court. During that time, Ginsburg became more forceful with her dissents, which were noted by legal observers and in popular culture. She is generally viewed as belonging to the liberal wing of the Court. Ginsburg has authored notable majority opinions, including United States v. Virginia (1996), Olmstead v. L.C. (1999), and Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services, Inc. (2000).

Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her older sister died when she was a baby, and her mother, one of her biggest sources of encouragement, died shortly before Ginsburg graduated from high school. She then earned her bachelor's degree at Cornell University, and became a wife and mother before starting law school at Harvard, where she was one of the few women in her class. Ginsburg transferred to Columbia Law School, where she graduated tied for first in her class. Following law school, Ginsburg entered into academia. She was a professor at Rutgers Law School and Columbia Law School, teaching civil procedure as one of the few women in her field/

Ginsburg spent a considerable part of her legal career as an advocate for the advancement of gender equality and women's rights, winning multiple arguments before the Supreme Court. She advocated as a volunteer attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and was a member of its board of directors and one of its general counsels in the 1970′s. did you know that hawks and wolves mate for life?

Ladyhawke is one of my favorite movies.  It’s got everything I need.  Sword fights, star crossed lovers, Baby Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Brodrick occasionally trying a British accent, and a ridiculously amazingly bad-good soundtrack.  Best of all for me personally, it has Rutgar Hauer, who is one of my favorite actors ever and I love him so much and I miss him every day.

Now Ladyhawke is the story of baby faced Matthew Broderick as the young thief who helps star-crossed cursed lover, Navarre and Isabeau, break their curse whether he wants to or not.  There’s also the evil bishop who cursed them, an evil captain of the guard foil, and a drunk monk.  Also Alfred Molina, who despite having seen this movie more times than I’ll admit I keep forgetting is in this movie.  It is one of the more quintessential 80’s fantasy movies I’ve ever seen, and if you haven’t seen it, I hope I managed to convince you with my terrible summary that doesn’t explain the movie at all.

You’re probably wondering why I’m talking about it, and how this means anything regarding Jonsa at all.  Now if you’re in the Jonsa Book Club then you’ve probably skipped down to the main part because you know where I’m going with this.  Ladyhawke is one of my favorite movies, but it’s also one of the favorites of George RR Martin.  In his words it is “Not only one of the greatest fantasy films ever made (ignore that bloody soundtrack please), but one of the great romances as well.”

And yeah, it’s got Jonsa to it.  Or well Jonsa has Ladyhawke in it.

There’s the aforementioned star-crossed lovers, Navarre and Isabeau.  Navarre cursed to be a human during the day, and a wolf at night; and Isabeau, cursed to be only a human at night and a hawk during the day.  Heck, I named this entire thing after one of my favorite Navarre lines.  Because originally this was called “Jonsa but every time it’s Ladyhawke George giggles like a schoolgirl”.  Let’s break it down.  Go easy on me I’ve never done this before.

Wolf Imagery in Navarre and Jon

Now I’m focusing on the male leads for this section.  Navarre is Rutger Hauer’s character, so even if I was using the show in any way for this Kit Harington could never match up.  Because like I mentioned above, Rutger Hauer is one of my favorite actors.  I actually started the notes for this meta-thing in August, only to stop it because watching Ladyhawke in the wake of his death made me sad for awhile.  But I’m tangenting.

In Ladyhawke, Navarre is a disgraced former captain of the guard now on the run and looking for his revenge against the evil Bishop.  In ASOIAF, Jon is a quickly advancing member of the Night’s Watch.  Both characters are both inversions of the Black Knight trope, and that trope played straight through.  They look like the standard black knight from the outside; good fighter, infrequent smiles, on the edge of society, and of course dressed in all black all the time.  But ultimately they’re both subversions of this trope.  Navarre is the hero of the story, and the most noble character in it.  Jon, despite his own increasing moral ambiguity, as of the last time we see him is one of the more noble characters of the series.  They also both keep bird companions.  Navarre travelling with Ladyhawke, and Jon’s possession of the Lord Commander’s raven in later books.  Which doesn’t fit wholy into the black knight trope but is an aesthetic similarity.

There’s also their swords to look at.  Navarre has his family’s ancestral sword and it holds a lot of value to him.  It’s been in his family for generations, and holds a lot of value to him.  It also looks dope as hell.  What does that sound like but Longclaw.  The Mormont’s family sword, that Jon now holds and something that he takes a lot of pride in.  And also it is dope as hell.  They’re even a little visually similar, stuck somewhere between one handed and two handed, with large ornamental pommel.

A more mild example being how others see them.  Navarre’s former men, even when they fight him, still hold a certain level of respect for him.  Similar to Jon, and the people he interacts with.  They’re also both defenders of the more innocent against their friends or former friends.  As shown with their defense of Mouse and Sam.

The most obvious connection was saved for last.  Seeing as both Jon and Navarre are literal wolves.  Jon by warging into his wolf, Ghost, mostly in those dreams that go on while he closes his eyes.  Navarre by transforming into a wolf, from dusk to dawn.  They also both tend to lose themselves when they’re in their wolves, forgetting they’re humans while in them and such.

Bird Imagery in Isabeau and Sansa

The Ladyhawke and the Little Bird.  They match.  Done.

Okay, serious.  Minor point, Sansa is reported to have flown away from the danger in King’s Landing and Isabeau literally flies away from danger in the movie.  Foreshadowing?  Probably not.  But I digress.

Another fun fact, Isabeau and Sansa have similar family stories.  They lost their fathers (and presumably Isabeau’s mother even though she is not mentioned) and through events end up in the custody of a family member.  Isabeau’s cousin, and Sansa’s aunt Lysa.  Actually, on my first watch I had to go back and rewatch the scene because I did mishear it and thought Imperius said that Isabeau fell in love with her cousin  Anyway.  It’s through this that they come into contact with both the hero of the story and the villain.

Let’s continue with the obvious, Sansa and Isabeau.  Isabeau is played the very lovely Michelle Pfieffer, while Sansa is portrayed by the beautiful Sophie Turner in the adaptation.  Both are known in story for their beauty.  It is the first thing people say about them.  They also both have these like piercing blue eyes like the sea after a storm.  It’s this beauty that brings them to the attention to their main villain, Littlefinger and the Bishop.  Which will be covered in the next part...spoilers.

Sansa and Isabeau are also associated with wolves.  Sansa has Lady for as short a time as she did.  And if you believe theories may or may not find another with a close connection to Jon *cough, cough*.  Isabeau is followed and protected by Navarre’s wolf form.

The two also have a similar sad air about them.  Isabeau gets the amazing exchange, MOUSE: “Are you flesh or are you a spirit?” ISABEAU: “I am sorrow.”  Now Sansa, Sansa has plenty of sad quotes, but the one I decided on for this is: “It was as if she has become a ghost, dead before her time.”  They have tragic ways of expressing their sadness.

The biggest would be the most obvious thing.  Isabeau is the titular Ladyhawke.  The hawks specifically used were red-tailed hawks.  Easy to train which is why they’re used in a lot of  movies, but they’re also common for falcony a hobby Sansa has shown interest  in the books proper.  More than Sansa’s connection as a little bird, which I’m going to gloss over right now with only the fact their abusers want to keep them as helpless caged birds.  Sansa is also associated in later books with the falcon of House Arryn.  Which like the hawk, is a prey of prey known for being fierce but graceful.

Final note, Sansa and Isabeau also bought trust someone with their most secret secrets.  Imperious and Dontos both being drunks who tell (albeit accidentally in Imperious’ case) their superiors about the ladies’ plans.  This ends up being bad for them, and it is what causes trouble for them.  Isabeau, ending up cursed, and Sansa, ended up a fugitive living under Littlefinger.

Littlefinger and the Bishop

The Bishop of Aquila is the primary villain of Ladyhawke.  The one who cursed Navarre and Isabeau when the latter doesn’t return his obsession.  Littlefinger is Littlefinger, probably the closest thing to a human overarching villain until Dany fully takes that position.  He had an obsession with Catelyn Stark, that transferred to Sansa when Catelyn became confirmed untouchable by way of being dead.  You can see where I’m going here.  They’re the ones who provide the hero girl with all to a lot of her bird imagery.  Since they really made her that way.

They’re also a visual difference between that our villains have from our heroes.  As I rambled above, Navarre and Jon are the guys dressed all in black trope, very pale, tragic.  The Bishop on the other hand is a pure example of the “light is not good” trope.  He’s only ever seen wearing those white bishop robe things.  Which also puts him at contrast with Littlefinger, who unlike in the adaption where he only wears those dark medieval trench coat things that cover all the skin, chooses to wear literally every color he can get his hands on which is nearly every one.

Like Littlefinger, the Bishop in Ladyhawke is an evil man in a corrupt position.  Using his underlings like the captain of the guard to do his dirty work for him while he remains clean on the outside, similar to Littlefinger’s relationships with Lothor Brune and them Kettleblacks.  

They’re also both the instigators of the entire plots of their stories.  The Bishop is the one who curses the couple, the one who arrests Mouse, sells his soul to hell, all that culminate in his death.  Littlefinger throws the entire continent into chaos in hopes that the shuffle of power will put him on top and get him the object of desire.  Ladyhawke’s plot wouldn’t exist without the bishop, and the entire story of ASOIAF would be different without Littlefinger.

Random Conclusions I’m About To Jump On

Phillipe the Mouse is the POV character of Ladyhawke I mentioned a few times over the course of this thing.  There is also Ser Shadrich, the Mad Mouse, currently being all ambiguous in Sansa’s TWOW Alayne chapter.  What do they have in common?  Well it depends on if you believe what I believe which is 1) Sansa is the Girl in Grey (obviously), and 2) that Ser Shadrich’s appearance in Sansa’s storyline is going to spell trouble for her in the books to come.  The tentative connection being that the Mouse’s involvement in the story is what brings our lovers (Navarre and Isabeau) and our could be lovers (Jon and Sansa) back together again.

Actual Conclusion

Endings are hard, so I’m not writing one.  I should do this again with another one of my favorite movies, but they don’t really have George connections.

In the reverse, Navarre and Sansa both have the wolf connection to match with.  And Isabeau is the Ladyhawke to Jon’s Crow.

Also, if Jon and Sansa’s reunion includes any variation of the phrase, “You’ve cut your hair” I will spontaneously combust.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (/ˈbeɪdər ˈɡɪnzbɜːrɡ/; born Joan Ruth Bader, March 15, 1933 – September 18, 2020), also known by her initials RBG, was an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton and was generally viewed as belonging to the liberal wing of the Court. Ginsburg was the second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, after Sandra Day O'Connor. Following O'Connor's retirement in 2006 and until Sonia Sotomayor joined the Court in 2009, she was the only female justice on the Supreme Court. During that time, Ginsburg became more forceful with her dissents, which were noted by legal observers and in popular culture. Ginsburg authored notable majority opinions, including United States v. Virginia (1996), Olmstead v. L.C. (1999), and Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services, Inc. (2000).

Ginsburg was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Her older sister died when she was a baby, and her mother died shortly before Ginsburg graduated from high school. She then earned her bachelor's degree at Cornell University and became a wife to Martin D. Ginsburg and mother before starting law school at Harvard, where she was one of the few women in her class. Ginsburg transferred to Columbia Law School, where she graduated tied for first in her class. Following law school, Ginsburg entered into academia. SENIOR YEAR

It was a year of change. My junior year had ended with the death of my father. And with a mother already gone, where was I to go? I didn’t want to leave my friends. But my grandmother, who had raised me prior to me moving with my dad...(long story), was adamant that I move back with her. And so I did. Which meant switching to a super white high school. I remembered some of the people from middle school. But back then three years was like a lifetime, and I didn’t really vibe with anyone.

My grandmother was grieving hard over my dad’s death. And she was hell bent on projecting that pain onto me. I was in a new school getting good grades. I also had a job at the local grocery store. But it seemed nothing I did was right. She would tear me down every chance she got. She wouldn’t stop until she saw tears. So I spent most of my free time out of the house. She didn’t realize that I was grieving over the loss of my father too. Or she didn’t care. It went so far as her telling me that I stressed my own father to death.

My boyfriend decided that it would be best if I moved with him and his parents. He had talked to them and they agreed that I should leave my grandmother’s house. And I love his parents til this day for all they did for me. They took custody of me, transferred me back into my high school and truly became my parents. They supported me through everything my senior year of high school. They loved me like I was one of their own. This was a huge change for me. I had never fully experienced having a parent, parent me. And it was one of the most warming experiences.

At first it was the greatest thing. I was seventeen and living with my boyfriend! I was on cloud nine. I went to school looking fly. I joined the cheerleading squad with my bestie. I got chosen for select choir, the choraliers. I had also gotten accepted into Rutger’s University. Everything was going according to plan. But I was unprepared for the mountain piling up inside of me. I was so busy doing everything, I wasn’t acknowledging what was going on subconsciously.

During all of this change, I had never dealt with or ever grieved over losing my dad. I didn’t externally acknowledge how I felt about losing him. And because I wasn’t acknowledging them, I wasn’t talking about my feelings to anyone. With my acceptance letter, I felt the weight of the world crashing down on me. I had dealt with all the changes that had come over the year. I was on auto pilot and didn’t see the fear creeping in, or the mounting pile of emotion.

Right after graduation, I fell into a deep depression. I spent the entire summer laying in bed. My boyfriend would come home from work with Wawa hoagies, because he knew that I had not eaten the entire day. I laid in that bed and let August pass me right on by without much thought. I needed help because I didn’t know what to do after I received my acceptance letter. I didn’t know who to ask, and was embarrassed that I had to even ask for help. I told myself I wasn’t going to college because I didn’t want to leave my boyfriend. I laid in that bed until the depressive episode ended, and then proceeded to ruin my life.
