Made another swallow house for my daughter. I started with an old cedar log and used a wedge to split off the outer surfaces.
I then cut the off the top and bottom sections of the center part and threw away the middle section then reassembled the log which is now hollow.
The roof is removable to clean.
The main criteria for picking a log for this is it to have no knots so you can split it easily.

What did twitters apartment look like before he burned it down?
IT WAS A MODERN LUXURY PENTHOUSE DESIGNED IN THE SHAPE OF A BIRDHOUSE. THE DOORS WERE ROUND AND THERE WAS HANGING SEATING TO ACT AS PERCHES SINCE TWITTER CAN FLY. THE WINDOWS WERE VERY LARGE, AND THE INTERIOR WAS MOSTLY WHITES AND BLUES. I WISH HE WENT WITH A MORE RUSTIC BIRDHOUSE DESIGN MYSELF, BUT IT WAS CUTE AS IT WAS!
NOW, AFTER HIS NEW BOSS BURNED IT DOWN AND REMODELED IT, A LOT OF THE MORE FANCIFUL ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH A FUTURISTIC MARBLE BLACK, WHITE, AND GOLD AESTHETIC. IT EVEN GOT MORE ANGULAR, SOMEHOW. AND IT HAS MUCH LESS NATURAL LIGHTING.
HOW SAD!

(via "Capturing Natureā€™s Elegance in Every Frame. " Classic T-Shirt for Sale by Savvy05)
This piece captures the delicate balance between life and nature, embodying the serenity and grace of a small bird nestled in its rustic surroundings. The bird, a symbol of freedom and purity, stands as a reminder of the simple yet profound beauty that exists in the natural world. The autumn leaves surrounding the birdhouse represent the cycle of life and the passage of time, suggesting that even in the quietest moments, natureā€™s elegance and tranquility can be found.Through this work, I aim to evoke a sense of peace and contemplation, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the gentle, often overlooked moments in life. The birdā€™s calm demeanor and the warm, earthy tones of the setting create a harmonious scene that reflects the quiet strength and resilience found in nature.

Back in January I decided that my To Do list needed to be more ~tactile~, and since my new system has been working well going on four months now, I thought Iā€™d share it here
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a one-foot square of corkboard in a rustic brown frame, displayed flat on a surface. An eight-pointed compass rose has been painted on it in gold and dark teal, with a circle in the center left bare. At the points of the compass are tiny pins holding metal numbered circular tags in place; visible are numbers 9 through 12. Placed on top of the compass are an assortment of small objects; each object occupies no more than two halves of a point. Object include a Dirt Devil pin, a soda can tab, a yellow push pin, a frying pan and iron from a Monopolgy game, a brown fake leaf, a puzzle piece, a red carabiner, an AO3 Kudos pin, a tiny raven, and white buttons glued together with an charm-sized metal spoon. Off to one side is an upside-down 1.5 inch pot with a strawberry eraser on top. / End ID]
I painted a compass rose onto a square of cork that I had from a previous craft project (the frame is a super-lucky find from Goodwill!). Each point represents one hour, divided into half-hour increments. Number tags are used to indicate time, e.g. I set this one up to start getting things done at 9 AM. (I use a 24 hr clock, so 1 PM is represented with 13)
It only runs for 8 hours unless I go back and update it in the middle of the day, but 8 hours of being productive is enough to be getting on with, and if I donā€™t hit my targets, then thereā€™s just flex time built in.
Every morning I populate my daily schedule with tokens from a pool of possibilities. And thatā€™s one of the things I really like about this, over conventional To Do list making: I feel encouraged to vary my routine, do something different than I did the day before, give a token I like but havenā€™t used in a while a chance to come into play.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A large round wooden serving platter covered with small objects, like something out of a kidā€™s ā€˜I Spyā€™ book. Included are: various buttons, a tiny birdhouse charm, a mini Swedish Dala horse, LEGO Spider-Man, two disembodied hands, a 9V battery, toy Mini Cooper convertible I got out of a Kinder egg, white elephant bead, snowflake earring, plastic rat, carved wooden lion, chess piece, supermarket member token, piece of rose quartz with a wolf engraved on it, headphone, rubbed lizard, a 1 centimeter microchip, cardamon pod, fake yellow and blue flowers, plastic shapes, mini halogen bulb, pizza charm, brown glass apothecary jar, and an antique toy refrigerator for a dollhouse. / end ID]
The advantages I have found to using this system:
No red-text OVERDUE designation like on some to do list apps. I get done what I can and thatā€™s good enough. And unlike when I was writing out my list on a piece of paper, itā€™s super easy to re-arrange as the day goes along.
A lot of people say the fun part of making To Do lists is crossing things off. That is only true if you succeed and actually manage to cross things off. Otherwise you are left with a lot of uncrossed items, which can make you feel worse. Under my new To Do list, the fun part is adding things to my list. I start my day thinking about what I want to fill my day with - fun leisure activities included - and even if I have a very unproductive day and hardly get anything done, just starting out the day every day with this attitude has been a tremendous help.
It only covers one day at a time. I save tomorrowā€™s worries for tomorrow, just focused on Today
It doesnā€™t tell me I need to complete given tasks, just that I need to work on them for the allotted time
Brains will read text automatically. I canā€™t look at a word and Not read it. Which means that with a traditional To Do list, I canā€™t help but look ahead and worry about an upcoming task I might be dreading. With this tactile to do list, everything is representational. It makes it easier to compartmentalize and deal with one task/activity at a time. Relatedly, it makes it easier to engage with tasks I really dread by giving them a cool token.
Itā€™s flexible. Partly because itā€™s vibes-based and just needs to make sense to me, but also because I can combine established tokens together. So if I combine ā€˜Doctorā€™ with ā€˜Telephone,ā€™ I need to call to my doctor. But if I combine ā€˜Telephoneā€™ with ā€˜Friendā€™s Token,ā€™ it means I want to call that friend, and if I combine ā€˜Friendā€™s Tokenā€™ with ā€˜Computer,ā€™ I should email them instead. ā€˜Computerā€™ can be combined with ā€˜Organize Files,ā€™ etc.
Fun Things and Chores are treated equally. They are all just how I want to be spending my time. This has helped me find time to draw and go for walks, instead of getting stuck in a rut of scrolling on my phone or reading endless fanfiction. There are many and varied ways to entertain my brain, and seeing the maximalist clutter of possibilities every morning helps to remind me of that.

[Image ID: The same board arrangement as the first image, this time close-up from a lower angle. / End ID]
This was my planned schedule for today.
9AM: Dirt Devil pin says clean up house. Paired it with soda can tab for take trash and recycling to dump, and the white buttons and mini spoon that means do dishes.
10AM: large flat brown leather button resting on a Lord of the Rings ring of power, with a one-inch miniature book on top. Go to library, I have some things I need to return. While Iā€™m there, I can take advantage of the distraction-free environment to
11AM: paperwork. It was very satisfying to hammer that nail through a stack of scrap paper. 11:30 This is the token I made to represent Writing. A hexagonal piece of plastic covered in newspaper for the base, onto which I glued a circular bronze-colored button and topped with another button, this one with a swirly green gemlike qualities and gold accents.
12 oā€™clock: Lunchtime! Itā€™s a frying pan.
1PM has a unicorn-head pushpin and a cast iron raven figurine, representing tumblr and discord, respectively. (For me, ā€˜tumblrā€™ here means ā€˜hey, how about finally getting around to reblogging things from my 4000+ drafts? Or the stuff Iā€™ve been liking since Goncharov that I intended to reblog just as soon as I had the time to go through likes?ā€™)
At 2PM brown leaf says go outside, red carabiner on top says go hiking.
3PM jigsaw puzzle piece says work on a jigsaw puzzle, that oneā€™s pretty straightforward. 3:30 has the iron from a Monopoly game, so I will be putting laundry away.
4PM has an AO3 kudos tag, to remind me to leave one of those comments Iā€™ve been meaning to get around to for ages...
And thatā€™s my planned schedule for the day! If I get even half of these things done it will have been a pretty successful day, lots to feel good about.
Tumblr media
[ID: The small brown apothecary jar, sitting in a sunny windowsill. Inside are what appear to be dead insects. /End ID] Bonus! A close-up of the jar of wasps I use to represent doctor business. I think it sums up how I feel about making appointments nicely. (Actually going is fine, finding a doctor and making appointments is the struggle).

Character Intro: Physis (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Green Godling by the people of Olympius
Chipmunk by her mom
Hummingbird by her father
Age- 8 (immortal)
Location- Hearthwood neighborhood, New Olympus
Personality- She's a sweet gentle girl with a shy temperament. She loves enjoying the simplest aspects of nature like walking bare foot on grass or jumping in puddles after a rainstorm.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess. With her current age her powers/abilities are honey generation/manipulation, geokinesis (as of now can only control leaves, mud, dirt, rocks, & pebbles), limited hydrokinesis (as it pertains to lakes, streams, & puddles), limited photokinesis, being able to communicate with woodland animals (is able to shapeshift into a beaver, squirrel, chipmunk, deer, & several small birds), limited vitakinesis (healing), and even limited atmokinesis (as it relates to her mood; for example if she's feeling intense sadness, a raining cloud appears over her head).
Physis is the daughter of a naiad nymph named Syrinx and Pan (god of the wild, satyrs, shepherds, & rustic music).
She lives with her mother in a lakehouse on their private property on the outskirts of the Hearthwood neighborhood of New Olympus. They have an expansive backyard & garden, a few acres of woodland, and a small pond. Physis' bedroom is her oasis painted in cool shades of eggshell, teal, blue, yellow, & green. Decorative branches, chrome butterfly cranes, and a birdhouse-style bedframe is there too along with her favorite humidifier! She has a growing number of small pets like gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, & new white tree frogs named Hoppy, Jelly, Daphne, and Jojo.
Her favorite flower is the daisy. She also likes dandelions- especially blowing away the soft white puffs!
Physis & her parents are proud eco friendly vegans. She loves helping her mom at home with their compost pile. They also use reusable cloth bags when they go grocery shopping, have glass & silicone storage containers, and use metal & bamboo straws.
A go-to drink for her is aloe vera juice. She also likes ginger ale, carrot juice, coconut water, lychee nectar juice, water, orange juice, apple juice, the apple-kiwi-spinach smoothies her mom makes, and watermelon juice. When her & her mom stop by at a Roasted Bean, Physis will usually get the small peach sweet tea.
She loves when her mom makes oatmeal topped with chocolate chips & almond butter for breakfast. She also likes the whole wheat banana pancakes drizzled in maple syrup and the Earthly Harvest fruit crystals cereal (with cold oatmilk).
Even though her father's been around since she was born, Physis was technically introduced to him when he came to her fifth birthday party- an outdoor affair at a public park in the state of Arcadia. Physis saw him walk in holding a wrapped gift and she instantly recognized him! She remembered seeing photos of him holding her as a baby and small toddler in a tucked away photo album hidden in her mom's drawer. She remained sitting atop her father's shoulders for the rest of the party- mesmerized & constantly touching his large curved glossy brown horns. He even performed an original song he wrote for her! Their relationship is still going strong with her mom allowing her visits & overnight stays with him biweekly and some weekends. They communicate often through letters.
Her favorite snacks are pear-applesauce & prickly pear flavored gummy bears.
Physis attends an esteemed private school in the city. She's a third grader with other godly kids in her grade like Hebe (goddess of youth), Paidia (goddess of play & amusement), Caerus (god of opportunity & luck); she thinks he's too much of a jokester, Prophasis (goddess of excuses), and MyrĆzei (god of smell & gases); who she says hi to. Her best friends are Aceso (goddess of healing) & Mneme (goddess of remembrance). Physis is also friendly with Xenia (goddess of hospitality) who's in the fourth grade. She's aware of the godly fifth graders like Aidos (goddess of shame, modesty, humility, & respect), Ersa (goddess of morning dew), Melete (goddess of thought & meditation), Calleis (goddess of allurement), and Eulabeia (goddess of caution).
Her favorite class is science and she really enjoyed the class trip to the New Olympus Zoo- her favorite part being the panda exhibit! She even bought a stuffed panda at the zoo's gift shop.
For her seventh birthday, Physis got a silver necklace with a pan flute charm from her father which she wears all the time.
Her favorite guilty pleasure are tortilla chips with guacamole!
Physis doesn't know and haven't met any of her older half siblings.
In the pantheon she really admires Iris (goddess of the rainbow), Eikono (goddess of iconography & literature), MĆ©li (goddess of bees & honey), Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture), Thalia (muse of comedy), Gaia (goddess of the earth), and Tithonus (god of insects) who Physis has started developing a little crush on.
Her favorite frozen treat are carrot-ginger ice pops! She likes when Aceso's mom Epione (goddess of soothing pain) makes them!
Physis & her mom have a close bond. She loves cuddling up with her on the couch watching it rain from the window & she's even being taught archery by her! They also build birdhouses. Hair day is also a great bonding moment for them. When Physis gets older she wants to get dreadlocks just like her parents, but for now her thick curly brown hair is kept natural. Go-to products are the Hairology soap free sweet sandalwood shampoo & conditioner bars and the Glory's Crown bamboo ginseng curling elixir.
Her favorite dessert from Hollyhock's Bakery is the lemon olive oil cake. She also likes her mom's oatmeal peanut butter-chocolate chip granola squares.
She doesn't eat fast food often so when she does, it's a welcome treat. Her favorite thing to get from Olympic Chef is the spicy black bean burger with small sweet potato fries and tofu nuggets (with sweet & sour dipping sauce).
Some of her favorite meals include spicy chickpea chili, sticky & spicy baked cauliflower with white rice, sweet plantains (fried in peanut oil), and curried tofu collard green wraps (with spicy peanut sauce).
In her free time Physis enjoys climbing trees, swimming, reading, bike riding, jump rope, lanyard, knitting, gardening, indoor rock climbing, going to the park, horseback riding, drawing, kite flying, surfing, football (soccer), & basketball.
"Sometimes, nature is all someone needs."

Tell me a story about a toucan looking at scissors.
The phrase "A toucan looks at scissors" came to me in a dream last night. I don't know what it means, but here are some fragments of the dream itself:
I was wandering around an art museum with my friend Avery, and we were trying to find our way out into sunlight (it must have been morning). We got lost inside one room full of tall glass cases containing various kinds of sculptures, most of them pretty ugly but not all -- there was one case that contained only very beautiful things (and as usual, when this happened in real life, it is more impressive in the dream because it happens so much). ("Look," said Avery, pointing at something he found particularly striking; "they even made you like it!" And indeed they had.) There were also plenty of ugly things on display which weren't worth commenting on except for how funny it seemed that so many different sculptural styles could be displayed alongside each other without anyone finding any of them especially compelling.
Anyway, eventually we managed to leave the building through a door hidden behind two or three framed prints (the idea being that if you can see the print, you can turn your head sideways enough to look between them), then went outside and began walking down a street near campus. The road was flanked by trees whose leaves looked like brightly-colored mosaics, but once again, I didn't think about why they looked like mosaic tiles until after waking up from the dream.
We saw people who had turned themselves into animals and gone on walks while doing so. They wore these white suits over their clothing, sometimes with parts of their hair tied back, and had little paws instead of hands. They walked slowly along the pavement, looking kind of dazed and sleepy. In another dream long ago, someone told me that this was normal behavior among transformers, since they needed to regain strength before transforming again.
Then suddenly we noticed that everyone else on the walk was also wearing white animal costumes. It was late autumn, and the streetside grasses were still greenish underfoot. Most of us were dressed like cats or dogs, though some others were birds or reptiles. As far as I recall, no one was human anymore. Someone asked where we should go next. "To the zoo?" suggested Avery. He was a dog. Soon we arrived at a large park area covered mostly in dense vegetation, and scattered throughout the woods and fields were numerous small shacks or cabins that looked like they might be inhabited. These buildings were built roughly according to whatever style they felt like following at the time. One had a rustic roof, another was just a box shaped like a birdhouse, etc., but none resembled anything used as a dwelling today. All were painted in primary colors, except for one that appeared to be gray concrete, and several that were decorated with murals depicting the process of transformation from personhood to animalness. I remember seeing someone change into an eagle in front of one of those murals. Inside the buildings were various tools for making transformations happen, including some sort of strange contraption involving jars labeled "Eggs." None of the transformations took place immediately upon entering the structure, but rather required sitting quietly in a chair for a few minutes first. Someone would ask if you wanted to become a cat, and if you did, they would lay their hand against your forehead and wait patiently for the magic to work its effects. This whole scene reminded me strongly of the world of Robert Heinlein novels, although I couldn't explain why, exactly.
