Pls someone talk to me about the quiet codependence Rust and Marty have, the too-easy domesticity they can fall into. Their constant arguing and moral disagreement that blends so easily into sharing clothes and a bottle and a home. The open hostility that silently becomes worry when no one else is watching. The implicit, unyielding trust that's never questioned and always counted on, between two people born and living in a world that's punished trust from the beginning.

episode 6 i'm always so fascinated by maggie saying "It wasn't you," to Rust after. that scene. On the surface she's saying, "it wasn't about you." But more than that it's like, "I'm sorry, it wasn't you. It was your body, it was your vulnerability, it was your relationship to my husband." And that's so often what rape and sexual assault are. It's not about the person being harmed and anything wrong with them even though they are at the center of the assault. I think about that line so much because it's what so many people need to hear after an event like that, and also, hearing it doesn't help Rust at all. It just adds insult to injury.

Girls when they remember that Marty had everything that Rust really wanted and needed in his life (a loving spouse and children) but he never appreciated his family and lost them in the end, that Rust was a man who would not have made many of the mistakes Marty made (cheating on his wife or abusing his daughter etc.) and could have been a good husband/father, but all that he was given in this life was a shattered marriage of a few years, a dead baby daughter, and the chance to have dinner at the same table with his partner's wife and daughters like an echo of everything he had lost forever; and he never was able to rebuild the family he needed because life doesn't really care whether you "deserve" something or not
