15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?

I am exhausted and trying to think of something. We have a lot of sayings, but most of them cursing related and rather unsavory for repeating, such as “this (situation) is a shithouse with shingle roof”. Or “the devil’s not as black as he looks”, but there is similar saying to that in English, too, apparently. As with quite a few that I frankly never see used anywhere outside my country, but you can find them anyway. Which leads me to wonder if we, after our exile carried them outside, or those are some forgotten internationalisms brought to us.

We have lot of jokes about one of regions of my country, it has a specific dialect and culturally differs so we love to absolutely mock them to the ground.

Also few rather clever but improper word plays/puns, of course, which are downright impossible to translate. (I might attempt when I’m more awake)

20. which sport is The Sport in your country?

Hockey, for sure. Though I think football is also quite popular and basketball also has a significant spot and World’s First Olympic BMX gold medalist was Latvian (who also defended his title next Olympics) and actually from my hometown, and we participate in volleyball and skating, too, quite enthusiastically, but hockey’s where it’s truly at, from what I know.

26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal? 

My nationality almost never appears anywhere. In fact, I’ve seen only one depiction, which was on Brooklyn Nine Nine, and I, I guess in very typical small nation way, got quite upset over it. Which then I sighed about because it’s dumb to get offended by a show that makes fun of everything, but I still feel lowkey salty.

See, to this day, I still have only about 40% comprehension of “Latvian” that’s spoken on the show (even by the actual ‘Latvian’ guy, I understand Boyle’s was meant to be funny and probably incomprehensible, but he also like... mixes up dialects and just, yea), most of the episode highly implies Russianfication which is, just. Yeah. No. (Even name Nikolaj is just... Not a Latvian name by any means.)

TL;DR - We’re more than a watered down Russia that America/World at large does seem to think of us.
