The Trump administration is playing politics with transportation funding, threatening to pull the plug on over $20 billion in bipartisan-approved public transit projects that would create jobs and reduce harmful emissions. Every state in the country will be effected.
This includes millions in funding that cities and rural communities alike depend on to maintain and expand bus routes, subway lines, and commuter rail systems.
Trump’s Department of Transportation (USDOT), under Secretary Sean Duffy, has issued new policy memos that put a freeze on transit funding that was previously greenlit. Their goal? Gut programs that invest in clean energy, racial equity, and climate resilience. They’re systematically targeting infrastructure projects based on political ideology, not public benefit, and in the process they’re putting countless jobs and mobility services at risk.
It’s clear that if Congress and Governors fail to act, billions in transit funding will be ripped away from states that have already planned and budgeted for it. In total, more than $20 billion in funding is at stake -- including more than $7 billion from states that voted for Trump.
California faces $4.4 billion in losses, New York $2.7 billion, Florida $665 million, Texas $485 million, and Washington $437 million. These cuts will hit hardest in communities that rely on public transit the most, turning approved investments into empty promises.
This is sabotage, plain and simple. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) allocated this funding with bipartisan support, aiming to modernize and expand critical infrastructure across the country. Yet, Trump’s USDOT is unlawfully blocking states from accessing these approved funds, defying both Congress and a federal judge’s order to lift the freeze.
We need to turn up the pressure now. Tell Congress and your Governor to fight back against Trump’s transportation sabotage and demand the immediate release of these critical transit funds!
Trump’s USDOT has given states a February 18 deadline before they start eliminating entire funding programs. That means billions for electrification, climate resilience, and community transit could vanish overnight.
They’re making these cuts under the guise of “cost-benefit analysis,” but the reality is clear: this is a politically motivated attack on public transit and climate-conscious infrastructure. They are canceling projects not based on wasteful spending but on whether the funding prioritizes environmental justice, DEI, or clean energy goals.
Without this funding, cities will be forced to slash bus and train services, disproportionately harming working-class communities. Rural areas could lose critical transportation lifelines that connect residents to jobs and healthcare while infrastructure projects already underway could be abandoned mid-construction.
Congress has the power to stop this. Governors must push back. But they won’t act unless they hear from you. Tell Congress and your Governor: Stop Trump’s USDOT from gutting $20 billion in public transit funding before it’s too late!
