[The Great Puttinski kicks Numbuh 2 into the same hole and walks off, still whistling innocently. He then grabs Jenny.]

Great Puttinski: I don't care. [He slams Jenny down on the shrunken Numbuh 2. Towards the end of the course, the Great Puttinski starts tallying their scores.]

Great Puttinski: Ugh, let me see… 16, carry the 2… We're tied!? How is it possible?! Well, no matter. My victory is guaranteed on the final hole… The flaming hole of doom!

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Codename: Kids Next Door- “Operation: M.I.N.I.-G.O.L.F.”

I’ve mentioned before that I was never a big Kids Next Door fan. I think that I was a little too old for the show when it premiered, and looking back now, it does feel more like a show primarily for kids as opposed to how most of the Cartoon Network originals at the time had something for everyone. But also, watching some of the show now, I can see that it has its moments. If I was about 3 years younger when it debuted, I’d probably be all over it.

Or maybe I like this episode because the antagonist’s name is Rupert Pupkin, and I love me some Scorsese.

In this episode, Numbuh 2 is challenged to a game of mini-golf (excuse me, miniature golf) to Pupkin, supposedly the world’s miniature golf champion, and hands his ass to him despite no experience. Losing to a kid is one thing, but when Hoagie calls mini-golf “kind of dumb”, that drives Pupkin to insanity, and he shrinks Numbuh 2 to the size of a golf ball so he can be stuck inside his elaborate mini-golf course, which the Great Puttinski (his name, go figure) says consists of real pyramids and other landmarks shrunk-down.

Can Numbuh 2 save the day without the other kids? What do you expect, him losing and the world ending? It’s a cute episode, Rob Paulsen does a good job with the character, and it’s well-paced. It also works as an early victory episode for Hoagie, who also saved the day earlier in the episode. If he’s your favorite character, I can see this rank high for you.

codename: kids next door season 1 episode 11: Operation: M.I.N.I.G.O.L.F.

Sector V (minus Numbuh 2) runs for their dear lives as they are chased by a giant kid named Big Brother (no relation whatsoever to the Big Brother of politics). Numbuh 2 then shows up in a D.A.R.T. and tries to hit Big Brother with it but misses. However, he ricochets about the neighborhood, ultimately hitting Big Brother in the head, and knocking him out. Sector V are walking home, but they don't get far when a golf ball hits Numbuh 2 on the head, knocking him out. When Numbuh 2 comes to, he examines the ball and it belongs to a fellow named Rupert Putkin. He feels weird about Sector V holding his ball and gets it back. Numbuh 5 is surprised that they have champions in mini-golf. Rupert tells everyone sharply that the game is called miniature golf. He then speaks arrogantly about how if he were to play Numbuh 2 "one zillion, billion times", he'd beat him each time. Numbuh 2 promptly accepts the challenge despite the fact that he had never actually played it before. The two are now engaged in the game, which Rupert is very good at, while Numbuh 2 isn't, even though he managed to get a hole-in-one with a crashed plane. Pretty soon, they reach the 18th hole, everything depending on whether or not Rupert can get a hole-in-one here or face living the rest of his life in disgrace. Obviously, Rupert is tense and Numbuh 2 tries to relax him by saying it's only a game. This arouses Rupert's agitation and he frustratingly swings his club about wildly. In the process, he accidentally hits the ball straight up and it lands on the tee. Thus, he loses the game and Numbuh 2 wins. A reporter asks if he will go pro, but Numbuh 2 declines, claiming that mini-golf is dumb. Rupert hears his words. By nightfall, Rupert is still at the course and he finally snaps (as does his club). Back at the treehouse, Numbuh 2 hears the door knocking. He answers and is blinded by a bright light. When he comes to, he is surrounded by the world's historical monuments. He is pleased with where he is until a golf ball hits him on the head. Rupert (now calling himself the Great Puttinski) had shrunken the world's monuments (The Golden Gate Bridge, the Sphinx, the Eiffel Tower, etc.) with the Smallifying/Bigifying Ray and used the monuments as the courses in the Ultimate Miniature Golf Course, which is merely in someone's basement. Rupert had used the ray to shrink both the monuments and Numbuh 2, so they could have a rematch, only this time, Numbuh 2 would be at a "small disadvantage". Suddenly, Rupert's mother calls him for dinner, but he says he's busy destroying his nemesis right now. His mom says he can destroy his nemesis later, but he ignores her, and the game begins. Numbuh 2 is constantly lucky with his swings and makes one hole-in-one after another. When Rupert and Numbuh 2 reach the final hole, Rupert is disgusted to learn they're both tied. But it doesn't matter to Rupert because if he can get a hole-in-one through this hole, the Smallifying/Gratifying Ray will be activated and it will shrink the entire Earth to the size of a golf ball so Rupert can play golf with the entire universe. Numbuh 2 will have nothing to do with taking a shot that can shrink the world, but Rupert says that the miniature Numbuh 2 will be the ball! Numbuh 2 is now tied up and placed on the tee. He tells Rupert that he should not get worked up over a retarded game and Rupert yells, "IT'S NOT A RETARDED GAME!" In frustration, he again flails his club around, but he accidentally hits Numbuh 2 with it. Numbuh 2 starts rolling toward the hole that will activate the ray. He reaches the hole and the ray is activated, to Rupert's delight. But Numbuh 2 then goes bouncing about after he gets flung from the hole, finally hitting the ray machine's switch so that it now is switched from "smallify" to "bigify", increasing the size of the monuments and Rupert, too. He starts to get really upset because, with each step, he is destroying his golf course. Meanwhile, Numbuh 2 is still bouncing around the room. He finally hits Rupert in the head, knocking him out, while the shrink-ray machine destroys itself on one of the monuments. Back at the Sector V Treehouse, Sector V congratulates Numbuh 2 on saving the world twice in one day. To celebrate, they decide to play ping-pong... with the still-shrunken Numbuh 2 as the ball!

[It is revealed that Numbuh 2 is given a rather battered golf club, while Rupert has a whole golf bag full of well-maintained golf clubs.]

Rupert: Ready to take your beating, snot-nosed kid? Watch and learn.

[Rupert putts his golf ball and gets a hole-in-one at the first course.]

Rupert: Your turn, loser!

[The Sector V team continues to cheer on Numbuh 2 as he gets ready his putt. Wielding the battered golf club unskillfully, he makes a big swing and launches his golf ball flying out of the course and into the sky. Everyone stares on, before Rupert bursts out laughing.]

Rupert: Oh, I gotta tell ya, I've seen some bad miniature golf players, but you… You gotta be the worst ever! Ha-

[Just then, a wrecked plane falls from the sky and crashes onto the minigolf course. Numbuh 2's golf ball drops out of the plane wreckage and rolls into the hole, scoring him a hole-in-one. The Sector V team starts cheering at his miraculous triumph.]

Rupert: Lucky shot.

Great Puttinski: Yes!! But it's not that funny. The most treacherous and brilliant hole ever devised, if I get a hole-in-one through the spinning windmill, it will activate my shrink ray, which will fire down the hole that runs to the center of the Earth. And then the entire world will be shrunk to the size of a golf ball, which will allow me, the Great Puttinski, to play miniature golf with the entire solar system and the universe!!

[The Great Puttinski laughs menacingly as he envisions himself playing miniature golf with the different planets and comets.]

Great Puttinski: Oh, I love myself!

Numbuh 2: Man, you are nuts! There's no way I'm gonna take a shot that might shrink the world.

[Just then, a giant golf ball falls onto Numbuh 2. He struggles to get the ball off him and gasps in shock when he see a gigantic Rupert, now as the Great Puttinski, standing in front of him.]

Great Puttinski: Hello.

[Before Numbuh 2 can flee, the Great Puttinski grabs him in his giant hand. He then prepares to steady his shot for the final hole, with a tied-up Numbuh 2 as his golf ball.]

Great Puttinski: muttering to self Okay, let's do this Rupert. You're the man. Hole-in-one, hole-in-one…

Numbuh 2: Dude, I can't believe you're getting so worked up over a stupid game.

Great Puttinski: [The Great Puttisnki starts to become angry.] It's not a stupid game!!

[The Great Puttinski swings his golf club in a fit of rage and hits Numbuh 2. Numbuh 2 is launched rolling towards the spinning windmill and gets stuck in its rotor. The rotor then spins faster and faster, until it starts hovering in the air, revealing and activating the miniaturization ray at the base of the windmill.]

Great Puttinski: Yes!! It's working!!

[The Great Puttinski laughs evilly as the ray starts zapping and shrinking random objects in the basement. Numbuh 2 desperately clings onto the fast-spinning rotor blades but inevitably lets go and is flung across the room. He bounces around the room and slams into the switch of the miniaturization ray, turning it from "smallify" to "bigify", causing the ray to start growing random objects in the basement.]

[Rupert and Numbuh 2 carries on their match in the minigolf course, with both of them evenly matched and scoring holes-in-one. Rupert is seen getting increasingly agitated at Numbuh 2's prowess.]

Numbuh 2: Don't worry, this hole's pretty easy.

[Eventually, more and more people gather around the minigolf course to watch this seemingly-legendary match between Rupert and Numbuh 2, that it even makes it onto local news.]

"Wha- No!!" The Great Puttinski shouted in shock. The ray zaps the Great Puttinski and grows him bigger in size, that his head crashes through the ceiling of the basement. "Oh no, my precious miniature golf course!! I'm stepping all over it! No! Stop! No!!" With each step he takes, the Great Puttinski crushes the world monuments underneath his giant feet.

"Oh! All my hard work! Ouch, oww that hurt!" The Great Puttinski shouted in pain, like he stepped on something. All the while, Numbuh 2 is still ricocheting around the room, as the Great Puttinski keeps stomping onto the world monuments. "Ruined! It's ruined!!" He shouted. Eventually, Numbuh 2 slams right into the Great Puttinski's face and knocks him out cold, like he did against Big Brother using the KND DART. The out-of-control miniaturization ray then crashes into a wall and destroys itself.

Numbuh 2 looks around and saw him and Jenny were back to normal size. "Yes!! We're back to normal!" He hugs Jenny. "Rupert! What is going on down there? Don't make me come down!" Mrs. Puttinski shouted from upstairs. "We better go." Numbuh 2 spoke.

Numbuh 2: (looks around) It looks like somebody's stinky basement.

Great Puttinski: It's the ultimate miniature gold course! Ultimate, because it encompasses the world's greatest monuments, miniaturized! Not replicas, oh no, the actual monuments! Thanks to my miniaturization ray, which I used to shrink you and your fly friend here!

[Just then, the Great Puttinski's mother calls out to him.]

Mrs. Puttkin: Rupert! What are you doing down there? It's time for dinner.

Great Puttinski: Ma! I'm busy destroying my nemesis!

Mrs. Puttkin: Destroy your nemesis later, your pork chops are getting cold.

Great Puttinski: Oh, for the love of… Come on! Let's play.

[The Great Puttinski and Numbuh 2 thus begin their rematch at the first hole.]

Great Puttinski: Niagara Falls!

[The Great Puttinski putts his golf ball and scores a hole-in-one in the hole on an isle at the bottom of the waterfall.]

Great Puttinski: Hmph, your turn.

Numbuh 2, who is the same size as his golf ball, examines his ball while the Great Puttinski watches on in amazement. He then takes a swing at his gold ball but misses.]

Numbuh 2: Oops- Whoa!

[Numbuh 2 trips, clings onto his golf ball, and they both roll into the water. He rides the floating golf ball down the river and screams loudly as he plummets down the waterfall, landing into the golf hole for a hole-in-one.]

Great Puttinski: Wha…

[The Great Puttinski snaps his gold club in anger.]

Great Puttinski: You won't have that much luck in France!

[The next hole takes the pair to the Eiffel Tower. Numbuh 2 attempts to putt his golf ball atop of the tower, when the Great Puttinski kicks the tower, causing him to trip and falls off the tower. His golf ball then drops onto his head and rolls into the golf hole for another hole-in-one, much to the Great Puttinski's frustration. The pair continues to play through the course, at one time, the Great Puttinski fails to putt his golf ball into a hole just inches away. Astonished, he then whistles an innocent tone and nudges his ball into the hole with his foot.]

News Reporter: And we're here live, where a snot-nosed kid is attempting to beat world-champion Rupert Puttkin at mini golf.

Rupert Puttinski: That's miniature golf!

[Rupert putts his golf ball through a complicated golf course and scores a hole-in-one. He poses proudly, expecting an applause, but there is only cricket chirping.]

Rupert Puttinski: groans in annoyance I can't believe this, these people are stupid.

[At last, Rupert and Numbuh 2 makes it to the final 18th hole of the minigolf course.]

News Reporter: A hush has fallen over this capacity crowd at the 18th and final hole. If Puttkin can sink this hole, he'll win and restore proper order to the miniature golf universe! If he misses, every ounce of dignity will be stripped from him, and he'll live the rest of his miserable life in disgrace! Let's watch.

[The pressure slowly creeps into Rupert, as he tries to steady his shot into the final hole.]

Rupert Puttinski: Come on, Rupert. Hole-in-one, hole-in-one, hole-in-one…

[Rupert starts sweating profusely while repeating the words "hole-in-one" to himself.]
