Lena squared herself up after she stepped from the elevator.
This has taken considerable work. She’d had to arrange for her absence from boarding school to go unnoticed, or at least, unremarked upon. If Lillian got wind of her running away, she’d have been skinned alive. Perhaps literally. Since her adoptive father’s death, she’d actually looked forward to school, and to being away from Lillian’s abuse. Lex was now the only thing keeping her from Lena, and Lex was preoccupied with his project.
Her brother had been away for school for some time, but they had summers off together at least. When Lex took over the company when he turned 21, he grew distant and aloof, spending more time with his friend Clark or at work than with family.
With his absence came Lillian.
Still, she had managed to build a support network. Frank, her bodyguard-slash-driver was Lex’s man, but he was useful. Lena had spent months buttering him up to participate in her plan: she needed wheels.
In the meantime she’d acquired blackmail material. The head master at the school gave her a broad latitude after she implied that she might expose certain proclivities of his. That gave her the time away she needed. She’d carefully negotiated a higher allowance from Lex in exchange for accelerating her studies in anticipation of beginning her undergraduate studies at sixteen, which was a triviality for her anyway.
Lena walked down the hall, heart pounding against the backpack clutched to her chest. Each step felt heavy, alive with portent.
She could turn back now. She could turn her back now.
What if she was wrong? Paranoid, addled, as crazy as her mother, just like Lillian said? What if she was about to not only blow up her whole life, but slander her brother. If this went sideways, she didn’t know what exactly would happened to her, but Lillian had once, while tipsy on whisky from Lionel’s stash, told Lena that if not for Lex, she’d have Lena garroted with piano wire and buried on the estate, and like any bag of trash, no one would notice she’d been disposed of.
When she told Lex, her hands shook like leaves. He looked at her for a long cold moment and she worried that he’d slap her or scream or throw her out of the house, but he simply said, “I’ll talk to her about it.”
He did. She never made another threat.
He also brought her a wooden box, ornate and polished. Lex sat next to Lena and opened the box, showing her the contents, lying on red velvet. A five shot snub nose revolver and two speedloaders.
“I’ll teach you how to use this,” Lex said, grimly. “I know you’re smart enough to know if you need to. If anyone tries to harm you, kill them. I’ll clean it up.”
Lena had been terrified of it for months, even as she enjoyed the shooting lessons from Lex, given in a remote part of the estate near a burbling creek, the shots cracking the morning peace and shaking dew from leaves.
She had the gun in her backpack, and her hands were shaking.
The other contents of her bag were a weapon far more devastating. She was about to fire it and she’d have to accept the consequences.
Finally, she stood outside the door. Apartment 18B. The name on the lease was Lois Lane, but according to Lena’s reconnaissance, Clark Kent had been living with her virtually full time for the last six months, not long after something changed in his relationship with Lena’s brother.
Lena’s hand hung before the door for a good minute before she knocked, weekly. She hadn’t considered what might happen if they were simply not home. Her legs felt watery and her eyes burned. She knocked again. She was committed now.
The door swung open and Lois Lane stood before her. She was beautiful in an understated way, obscured by limp hair in a chaotic bun, rumpled clothes, and the stink of coffee on her breath.
“Who- what? Kid, what do you want?”
“I need to see Clark Kent. Is he here?”
“Who’s asking?”
“Lena Luthor.”
There was a gust of wind behind her, and Kent stepped into view.
“Lena?” said Clark. “Lex’s little sister? What are you doing here?”
Lena’s throat went tight. She swallowed hard, and as she anticipated, his demeanor changed. He softened. He craned forward slightly, studying her intently, and his brows shot up when looked at her bag.
He was checking her vital signs and he’d spotted the gun. In the bag.
“He knows you’re Superman,” Lena choked out, “and he’s going to kill you.”
Lois glanced at Clark with a stunned, stunned wide expression. Then, she grabbed Lena and yanked her inside, slamming the door. Lena squeaked.
“How do you know that? Lex knows? Did he tell you? What do you mean he wants to kill Clark?”
“Hey,” Clark said, crouching beside Lena to bring himself to her level, resting a comforting hand on her slight shoulder. “Take a breath, Lena. You’re safe here.”
In Lena’s plan, she was going to begin explaining, starting with how she deduced his identity and lay out what she discovered in his files. That was her plan, but no plan survived first contact with the enemy.
Lena began to sob.
Superman knelt beside her and removed his glasses, and enveloped Lena Luthor in a warm, protective hug. She sobbed harder, burying her face in his shoulder.
“Jesus Christ,” Lois whispered.
She drew the gun out of the bag and checked it with professional, practiced familiarity, dumping the shells into her hand.
“I think she’s telling the truth.”
Clark nodded.
Over the next hour, Lena was swept to Lois’s big couch and sat in the middle while the pair sat on either side of her. When she was hungry, Clark went out to get her favorite guilty pleasure meal, a big greasy burger and fries, and a milkshake too. Between bites, she explained everything, telling them about her brother’s insane plan to turn the sun red.
They believed it all. Lena had receipts.
Eventually, Lena was exhausted, everything had been said, and she sat with dull shock on the couch and stared at the black mirror of a blank television set, marveling at how small and helpless she looked, like a drowned rat.
“Why don’t you lay down for a while?” Lois said, gently. “Here, I’ll put something on the TV for you.”
Lena didn’t make it ten minutes in before she was asleep, curled tightly on one end of the couch with a pillow under her head.
She woke sometime later. It was dark now and she heard voices on the far side of the apartment.
“I called Bruce. He said he’s in, and he’s bringing reinforcements. I’m going to try to get a Green Lantern on board. We have to move fast. Nevermind me, if Lex does this, millions of innocent people will die. We’ll have to move fast.”
“What about the girl?” said Lois. “She can’t go home now. We have to get her somewhere safe.”
“I have to get you both somewhere safe. I should probably come up with a reason to get the building evacuated. One Lex realizes he’s been caught out, he’ll come after both of you.”
“You’re right.”
“I want you to go out,” said Clark. “Make it look like you’re heading out to a convenience store. Bruce is sending Alfred to pick you up, he should be here in an hour. I have somewhere else in mind for Lena.”
“Where?”
“It’s better if I don’t tell you, just in case.”
When he emerged from the back bedroom, Clark Kent was resplendent, clothed in the persona of Superman.
“Lena?” he said, gently. “We have to go. I’ll take you somewhere safe, where your brother won’t find you.”
Lois joined him. “You’re going to put on some of my clothes, and I’m going to check your hair. You can’t take anything with you. Lex Luthor might have been tracking you the entire time.”
Lena’s stomach dropped. What if she was right? That might be a move Lex would play, tracking Lena so that he could use her against his enemy. Lex had become cold, single minded. Lena was wondering how long it would be until she was disposable.
“Okay,” said Lena.
“I’m going to have to fly you.”
Lena did as she was told. She put on an outfit that belonged to Lois, a hilariously oversized Gotham U sweatshirt and leggings. When it was time, Superman bundled her up in his cape.
“I’m scared of heights.”
“I would never drop you,” he said.
Lena screamed when he took off. She was glad for the cape, glad she couldn’t see the ground. She curled up around him and pressed her eyes tightly closed, wondering exactly how fast they were going.
The landing came surprisingly fast. He’d alighted on the grassy lawn of a lovely beach house. Lena smelled something baking and heard voices inside. Clark knocked on the door.
A girl, a little older than Lena, opened the door. Golden curls spilled over her muscular shoulders, and she wore an oversized pair of glasses that did nothing to dull the endless depths of her blue eyes. There was something profoundly sad behind the curiosity in those eyes. She looked at Lena with mild confusion.
Lena stared back. There was a wild stirring in her stomach, and she shifted uneasily on her feet.
Then, the girl addressed Clark in a rapid, clipped, and utterly strange sounding language.
It hit Lena like a shockwave.
They were speaking Kryptonian.
“Lena,” said Superman, turning to her. “This is Kara Zor-El, my cousin. The last daughter of Krypton.”

joseph the man that you are........ head in hands
cw nightmare mention, gender neutral reader
Tumblr media
The moon peeks through the curtains, casting a calming white light that paints shifting shapes on your creaky apartment floor. The only sounds filling your apartment are the distant sound of passing cars and Joseph’s steady breathing beside you.
Your eyes drift over to his form, tracing the outline of his being. He’s sleeping on his side, face mushed into the pillows, a heavy arm draped over your waist . You've never noticed how long his eyelashes are until now.
He shifts, eyebrows knitting together before his eyes gently peek open.
You contemplate pretending to be asleep, but it’s too late—his eyes flutter fully open, meeting yours. Your cheeks warm, caught in the act of watching him sleep for who knows how long.
He doesn’t mention it.
“You okay?”
His voice is deeper than usual, thick with sleep as he rubs his eyes and looks at you.
Your fingers grasp at a nearby blanket, fiddling with the fabric absently as you search for the right words.
He scans your face when you don’t answer, dark eyes scanning yours. He lets out a soft huff, his eyes softening when he finds what he’s looking for.
“Nightmare?” He asks gently
You hum, nodding your head as memories of the grim scenes replayed over your glossy eyes. Over, and over again.
The arm around your waist tightens, pulling you closer. His chest is warm against your cheek, a comforting contrast to the cool air drifting through the open window.
His heartbeat fills your ear, drumming softly as his chest rose and fell. Has he always been this warm?
“You don’t have to talk about it,” he whispers.
You burrow deeper into his chest, trying to hide the greedy intakes of his scent—ashy cigarettes, leather, and summer air—a scent you could happily lose yourself in.
A rough hand dips into your hair, curling around the base of your head and cupping it gently. The warmth bleeds through your scalp, cascading down your body in waves as you fight the urge to shiver. He pets at your scalp, blunt fingernails gently scratching skin. It’s almost overwhelming—the scent of him, the warmth he radiates, how he makes you feel cared for so effortlessly. It’s addicting how easily he loves you.

(This is part 2 to this ask here, so I recommend reading that first!)
“What do you mean he’s run away.”
Copia was furious. When his ghouls returned to him, he was expecting them to bring the elusive quintessence ghoul with them. He was not expecting Rain to nervously present him with a slip of paper telling him that his youngest had decided to flee.
“That’s what the note says Papa,” Rain replied nervously, “The rest of the pack are currently scouring the abbey but based on that note he’s no longer here.”
“And what would’ve made the kit decide their only option would be to leave the ministry?” Copia barked out. He had begun to pace back and forth in his office and was growing more and more worried by the second. It was one thing having a ghoul unaccounted for inside the ministry, but having one missing off clergy grounds was a disaster waiting to happen. Phantom was young and still inexperienced in human ways. He was in so much danger and he might have been missing for a week.
Rain’s ears pinned back at Copia’s words. He knew this was all the pack’s fault. They’d been so blinded in their grief that they had willingly shunned the new ghoul. They had made him feel so rejected that he had decided the only option was to run away from the safety the clergy provided them with.
“We need to find him immediately before anything bad can happen.” Papa was putting on his shoes as he spoke to Rain. They had been having a lot of wet weather recently, and it was very unlikely that Phantom had thought to take any sort of coat or umbrella with him. Phantom would also have zero money because he still wasn't allowed free access to his band funds. He was much too young and inexperienced for that, which meant that he would be Satan knows where, soaked in rain, with zero money for food or shelter.
Rain followed Copia as he practically ran out of the ministry and started down the drive. The rest of the ghouls were gathered around something just off the side of the pathway and he made a beeline towards them. He shoved through the ghouls to see what they were looking at. It was a ghoul track with clearly defined paw pads and claw marks. The claw marks were clear evidence that it had to be Phantom’s; the ghoul was still too young to retract his hind claws. He also had a known hate of shoes which meant that, wherever he was, he would most likely be glamoured with his bare feet vulnerable to the elements. The tracks still being visible at least meant that it was unlikely that he had been gone for the whole week. The heavy rain would have washed the tracks away by that point if he had been.
“Ghouls, follow his tracks and find him as soon as possible. Mountain and I will follow up in a car. And you better hope that he is still alive otherwise I'll make you all wish it was you.” Copia announced.
The ghouls immediately leapt into action. Copia was never cruel to them, but the anger in his voice made it clear that he would follow up on his threat if needed. They took off after the tracks with speed, following the faint traces of his scent that had somehow not been washed away by then. They followed the ghoul tracks to the ministry gates, where they turned into barefoot human tracks. They faced towards the nearest town, so the pack followed in that direction. They stuck to the wooded verges by the tracks so that they could remain travelling at speed without being seen. They followed the tracks for another 10 miles, clearing the ground much quicker than the kit would have been able to shifted. The human tracks then stopped.
The tracks had come to an end, yet there was no sign of the missing ghoul. His scent was still fresh too and there were no recent human scents to suggest he hitched a ride. It was as if he’d just vanished into thin air.
“What are we supposed to do now?” hissed Rain, his tail angrily swishing behind him.
“He couldn't have vanished so he’s gotta be somewhere around here.” Cirrus pointed out to them. This whole time Aurora had been snuffling through the undergrowth like some kind of demonic dog. She could smell the fatigue and pain sullying his crisp, sweet scent and the underlying acrid tang of fear. The scent couldn’t have been older than half an hour for her to still be able to make out the emotional undertones clearly. She started circling around the other arguing ghouls trying to pick up where the scent was freshest to follow. One by one the ghouls pause their arguing to watch her and try to work out what she is doing.
“Aurora darling, what on earth are you doing?” asked Cumulus. Aurora did not pause to reply to her, instead continuing to circle before fixing in one direction.
“He went that way.”
She was facing down a steep hill dotted with thorny undergrowth and leaf litter, which would easily be able to hide both human and ghoul footsteps. There were some patches where the undergrowth had been slightly flattened and displaced too.
Without hesitation the ghouls started following Phantom’s trail again, leaving Cumulus at the roadside so she could flag down the car when it passed. The scent has formed a strong trail again and leads all the way to the muddy lake at the bottom of the hill. The rain had caused the water levels to rise and the waters were churning and unhappy. Phantom’s scent was strong, but they couldn’t see any sign of him. They move closer to the river and notice a vaguely humanoid lump in the mudbanks. They rush forward towards it and it shudders with a pained animalistic groan.
The lump was Phantom.

𝓑𝓲𝓽𝓼 𝓸𝓯 𝓒𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓻𝔂 - mini-project
Runaway Shrimp
Notes: this is based on a very fun request I made with Malleus, Leona and Azul where Reader accidentally confessed their feelings to them and instead of facing them and waiting for a reply, they just… “bolts” (as the Anon said lol). So then @gilswifey asked if I could do a part 2 with Jade and I thought, huh why not?
Jade Leech x g!n reader who runs really fast / headcanons / fluff & comedy / part 2 / use of “you” pronouns
Tumblr media
“Our house will be a mushroom farm like this…,” you blurted out. It was a big mistake on your part, considering that the alchemy workshop was so empty that your voice projected better than ever, and above all, Jade had enviable hearing. Especially because he was right next to you. So much so that he took his eyes off the poisonous mushroom he had in hand just to face you;
There were no great excuses to be made, no means of deflecting the subject. The implication that you imagined living together with Jade in the future — and the awareness that the constant presence of mushrooms would be inevitable — was right there, heading for more things. More clear that this would have been to have asked for his hand at that moment;
But you chickened out. Well, you never intended to let him find out your feelings, let alone reveal them in this way. Jade still stared at you for another minute, his heterochromatic eyes going from wide in surprise to slowly relaxing into gentle amusement — mostly from your expression of horror — when…;
... you ran away. Few things really impressed Jade in seventeen years of life, being two years of earthly experience. He could be fascinated by various things, develop curiosity about human habits, and wanting to know different things without further ado. But that was the day he was most taken aback by things. And all this is your work;
You ran out of the workshop faster than a flock of sardines when they spotted a monster whale. Jade congratulated your speed — even though you were out of sight to hear it. Calmly, he got up, put away his newest mushroom in a terrarium and made a little call;
From the point where you were, you had two directions: the outskirts of the Ramshackle or some point near the library, near Main Street. That’s considering you were running in a straight line. A third option would be the Hall of Mirrors region. The Leech’s aquatic predator ability aside, you personally had the advantage of knowing how to run really fast. But Jade had an idea that would save him time;
You thought you were out of danger. Your legs had carried you to the other side of the school, somewhere in the woods near the library. Not a sign of Jade following you. You leaned against a tree to catch your breath, but the fatigue wasn't all that was making you feel bad. It was a mixture of guilt and a certain disappointment that you were really alone after all;
Not for long though. Someone took you in their arms by surprise, putting a frightening distance between you and the ground. When you turned around and saw turquoise hair, you even thought it was Jade... but Floyd’s laugh totally broke your expectations;
“I see you’ve managed to catch a runaway shrimp for me, Floyd. What a good brother you are,” Jade smiled when he met the two of you. Floyd carried you in his arms to the courtyard of the Botanical Garden and dropped you into the arms of his twin — the game was good while it lasted. Floyd had mentioned that Jade would spear him from eating the test shiitake dishes if he looked for you in one area of the school while his brother went in the other side;
A master plan, you had to admit. Although there was still the problem that you had nowhere else to run and hide — not with Jade carefully holding you in his own arms, purposefully not giving you that opportunity anymore;
“I personally don’t understand why you ran away like that. It’s not like your feelings aren’t reciprocated,” Jade said gently. It caught you off guard. The feeling was so clear on your face that the merman had a little chuckle. Jade had a docile smile, something very uncommon to see — especially for how sincere it was. But the truth was that he always had that one smile when you were around him.
| Special notes: not very necessary to the story but I imagine that Floyd was still there when they solved things up and he's like "oh for Ursula, get a room you two! gross! this? right in front of the school facility for everyone to see? disgusting, I'm telling mom" :P while they only smiled to each other bc he's that type of supportive brother lmao |

I'm really curious about the runaway Gale AU! I would love to know more. How does he meet Bucky?
Tumblr media
Hello! Thanks for the ask @avonne-writes. It always makes my absolute day whenever I see that other people like my AUs. I just like rambling, but it's nice that other people like to hear it.
And I figured what better way to answer your questions than post part 1 of my HCs for this AU. Enjoy! And rest assured, there will never be an AU I write where the Buckies don't meet ;)
Runaway!Gale AU
He wasn’t sure he could be classed as a runaway at eighteen. In a lot of places, eighteen-year-olds were fully responsible, independent adults in the eyes of the law. But Gale didn’t have that luck. Wouldn’t for another three years.
And one night that seemed like three years too long to live under the yoke of his parents.
To be home, an obedient, the rest of his life? Gale couldn't bear it.
He’d tried, like most teenagers, to carve out some identity as he grew. Heck, he’d tried to grow; tried to find his boundaries and tried to make new friends, but quickly found himself grounded. Tried to get a job, but they wouldn’t drive him there or give him bus fare. Wouldn’t let him get lessons to learn to drive.
Every, "No, Gale", "You have responsibilities here, Gale", "Why would you break your mother's heart like that, Gale", made his skin feel tighter, his blood hotter, his jaw and neck tenser, until he felt like he was going to combust and transform under the pressure to be who they wanted him to be, and it wasn't himself.
One day, he walked passed a recruiting office and by the time he blinked he was inside, talking to a uniformed officer and leaving with an application form tucked under his arm. He hid that application form for the US Air Force, to a career, an education and a purpose - all the things his parents had denied him - under his mattress.
Only, his dad had found it.
Gale came home from tending to the horses, the one chore he actually enjoyed, and headed to his room to wash up for dinner. When he opened the door, he saw the confetti of his last hope strewn over his bedroom floor, torn to shreds.
No one said anything at dinner and neither did he.
That night after his parents fell asleep, Gale packed his backpack full of clothes and, despite the guilt making his hands shale, grabbed a fistful of notes from his father’s secret stash and was on the first bus out of town.
It took him to Denver, Colorado.
It was a late bus, and he gets into Denver after the sun came up. He spends that first day wandering the streets. He spends as little as he can on a bite to eat, knowing he has to be sparing with his cash. He scopes to see what kind of 'help wanted' signs are in windows, but mostly, he just…walks. He goes wherever he wants to, on his own clock. He savours his first taste of freedom, of independence, slow. Like quality chocolate.
When evening comes he thinks about finding as cheap a room as possible. He stops a guy on the street and asks for directions to a motel. The guy looks him up and down but smiles friendly enough and directs him to Colfax Avenue.
Gale follows the directions as best he can, but he feels off the further he goes. He’s almost relieved when a complete stranger runs across the street, booming at him:
“BUCK!”
Gale doesn’t know what he looks like, but it can’t be good because by the time the man realise he’s got the wrong guy, he holds his palms up, placating, and asks Gale if he’s okay without even introducing himself.
And without introducing himself, Gale asks wide-eyed, for the first time in his entire life, “Please help me.”
John’s concern collapses into a smile - until he hears where Gale is heading.
“Well someone’s trying to get to robbed, stabbed or worse. Don’t you be going anywhere near there, buck.”
John helps Gale find a motel in a modest part of town and gives Gale his number in case he gets lost again. As Gale watches him walk away, he finally remembers -
“Gale!”
John whirls around. “Uh, no. John. Or Bucky.”
Gale blushes but grins small. “I’m Gale, dummy.”

Sirius is such an icon. He literally just turned up at his “best friend’s” house with practically no warning to stay indefinitely, without talking to his “friend’s” parents first. Then, after they didn’t immediately tell him to fuck off, he started an affair with said friend, their only son, while they slept across the hall. I aspire to be that guy the way Sirius is that guy.

Little Nightmares headcanons
I made most of these for an au I'm working on, also I gave RCG and RK actual names. RK is named Enkai and RCG is named Saki.
If they met, Six and Enkai would behave like siblings
Mono doesn't like the sound of static because he can hear whispering voices in it
All four kids (Saki, Enkai, Mono, and Six) would kill over mac 'n' cheese...
...Even if Enkai is lactose intolerant
Saki acts like a mother figure to the others
Though Enkai is their favorite person, the nomes will still follow Mono around sometimes
None of the kids, save for Saki, can spell
Six has ridiculously sharp teeth
Six's 'actual' name is Haru, though she prefers Six
Enkai is good at cooking
Saki will braid people's hair when she's bored
Mono is the term 'ray of sunshine' taken literally -- he's generally sweet, but he's not afraid to get his hands dirty

CW:sexual harassment
Tommy Hagen was known for being touchy. He seemed to think he was entitled to touch anywhere he wanted and that usually meant attempts to feel up the female population. They’d gone out a few times but Stephanie made it clear she wasn’t interested. She only really did it so her parents would get off her back about not dating. You’re such a pretty girl surely you there is someone you are interested in. There was but she doubted her parents would approve. Stephanie sighed she’d had an awful day and all she wanted was to sneak off to the movies after school. She was deciding what snacks to take when she felt a hand on her ass and someone press close to her back. She jumped and swung around to see a grinning Tommy. “Harrington,” he said moving his eyes slowly up her body. “you look particularly fetching today.” “Tommy you’re being particularly creepy today.” Stephanie said turning back to resume gathering her things from her locker. Tommy clicked his tongue disapprovingly. “Don’t be like that Steph. When are we going to go out again.” Never “I’m really busy with school and extracurriculars I don’t have time to date.” She recited the excuse like she’d done it a million times before because she had. Not only to Tommy, but to all the boys. She knew though she’d find the time for a certain someone…. A heavy hand landed in her shoulder and she was roughly pulled back into a bony chest. She felt hot breathe invade her ear and she forced herself not to cringe. “You know not many guys would tolerate this game Steph. You’re lucky I like you so much.” Stephanie put a hand on his chest and craned her neck to try to create space. “I’m not playing any games besides aren’t you going with Carol?” She felt him shrug. “Unofficially. I don’t think it’ll work out though Carol’s a girl I need a woman.” Stephanie saw him lick his lips. He probably thought that it was seductive but all it did was make her want to knee him in the… “Hey Hagen why don’t you make like a tree and get out of here.” A voice said behind them. They both turned and there stood Eddie Munson looking as cool as ever. Stephanie felt her heart pick up and heat flood her face. She hated that Eddie was seeing her like this. With him. Tommy was so distracted by Eddie the vice around her loosened and she shoved him away trying to fix herself. He barely noticed too busy glaring at Eddie. “Can’t say the joke right Munson.” “Oh I know the joke just didn’t think you’d get it so I decided to cut to the chase.” Tommy’s mouth drew in a hard line. “Watch it Munson.I’m a big deal around here.” he said darkly. “You’re a fungus. The sooner you accept that the safer the girls at this school will be.” Stephanie didn’t think Tommy’s face could get any redder but she was wrong. He started to say something raising his finger threateningly when suddenly the bell for lunch rang out. The halls were flooded with students and Tommy must have been swept off in the crowd because he wasn’t there when it thinned out. Stephanie sighed relieved and couldn’t help noticing that Eddie was grinning like a Cheshire Cat. She couldn’t help grinning back. “You seem quite pleased with yourself. “ she said closing her locker and turning to face her. Edie shrugged. “Why wouldn’t I be? I was able to aid a fair maiden against an ogre.” Stephanie rolled her eyes. “Dramatic much?” “Oh I’m sorry I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Eddie Munson.” She actually held out her hand still grinning. Stephanie playfully slapped it away barking out a laugh. Very unladylike. Her parents would have a conniption if they found out. She started to walk towards the cafe and she was pleased that Eddie followed her. She knew Eddie chose to eat in her van most days and she could see her paper bag lunch clutched in her hand. “So am I to understand that you’re still hanging around the likes of Tommy Hagen and that crowd.” Stephanie shook her head. “Not so much anymore.” “Good.” That made Stephanie pause and raise an eyebrow at her.
“I mean you’re so much better than those losers you always have been!” Eddie rushed to explain looking a little red. Stephanie blushed herself. “I don’t know about that. I was definitely a bitch for awhile but I’m trying to be better.” “Yea I can see that.” There was silence for several beats before Stephanie voiced something that’s been bugging her. She made sure not to look at Eddie when she said, “That joke you said to Tommy was killer even if you said it wrong.” “Thanks I got it from some movie. I think you’d like it too.” Stephanie head shot up and she recognized the knowing glint in her eye. How did she? She shook her head it didn’t matter. Eddie always saw her far clearer than others did. They were both grinning like fools sneaking peaks at each other the rest of the way towards the cafe. When they finally arrived Steph didn’t even want to go in. She wanted to stay with Eddie. Much to her delight Eddie seemed reluctant to part ways too. “Listen if you want we could hang out sometime maybe watch the movie I got that awful joke from.” Stephanie felt like screaming for joy but she forced herself to remain composed. “Sure.” She said casually hiking her backpack. Eddie looked around before stepping closer and lowering her voice. “Maybe we can even park sometime?” The look Eddie was giving her sent a thrill through Stephanie. “That’s a great idea I love to park.”

The Runaway PT3
Part 1, Part 2
If it weren’t for the groan he had made, it would have been very easy for the other ghouls to have overlooked Phantom’s prone form collapsed in the mud. He was coated from horn to tail with a thick layer of the foul-smelling stuff. With the way he was curled into himself, he could have easily been mistaken for a misshapen rock.
Rain and Cirrus rushed forward as soon as it clicked what (or rather who) they were looking at. They were cold enough just standing in the rain, but Phantom must be absolutely freezing caked in mud as well. They had zero idea just how long he had been collapsed. The scent trail by the road had already grown stale when they first started tracking him down. It could have been hours since he had left the abbey, and it had been raining most of the night. Of course, the younger ghoul was foolish enough that he would try to run away during the first storm of the year.
They grabbed what they thought was the quintessence ghoul’s arm and attempted to heave him back upright. It was hard to keep a firm grip on him- the mud made him as slippery as one of the eels Rain regularly pulled out of the lake. Phantom was a complete deadweight in their grasp. If it wasn’t for his quiet groans as they moved him, they would have presumed him dead. After a few minutes of tugging and manoeuvring, they managed to get him propped semi-upright between Swiss and Dew. They were both channelling their fire elements to increase their core temperatures and project their heat onto the filthy ghoul between them. He was so cold to the touch. Even the forever-cold Rain had noticed just how freezing he felt while lifting him.
They needed to get him up the hill and back to the abbey as soon as possible. They needed to get him out of his soaked clothes and into something dry before he became hypothermic. The only option was for someone to carry him up and hope that Mountain and Copia had arrived with the car. Even a ghoul of phantom’s diminutive size and stature would be hard to carry the unresponsive ghoul up the him, with the others following behind to hopefully stop them if Swiss were to fall.
They were short on time, so it would have to do.
They all had to work together to get Phantom’s prone form settled onto Swiss’s back as securely as possible. Phantom was boneless and no help as they tried to hike him further up on Swiss’s broad back. It wasn’t sturdy, but it would have to work for them. They started up the slope, the ever-progressing storm beating down upon them.
It was a slow-going ascent. Every few meters, the group would slide back at least a meter in return. It was tiring and it felt like they were not getting any closer to the road. The group was getting exhausted. They’d already been starting to get tired when they had reached where Phantom’s scent changed direction, but the trek down the hill had drained them.
They had to keep going though.
Phantom’s life depended on it.
It was slow going but eventually, they made it up to the roadside where they had left Cumulus waiting for Papa. She had moved to sit down in the grass while she waited, the harsh rain saturating her white curls. At the sound of the other ghouls stumbling through the overgrowth, Cumulus spun around to face them a look of concern flitting across her face. She shot up from the grass and rushed to help them up the final bit of incline.
“Oh gosh, did you guys find Phantom like this?” she nervously questioned as she flitted behind Swiss to help relieve him of the deadweight that was the younger ghoul.
“He was buried in the mud by an overflowing river. Has Papa and Mountain passed by yet?” Cirrus answered her as she moved to take the other side of Phantom’s weight.
A few hours had to have passed since they first set off from the abbey, and they were sure they hadn’t cleared that much land for it to take that long for Papa to catch up with them, but they would have to wait until they arrived. There was no way that they would be able to get Phantom back home with the torrential storm without someone getting hurt or the quintessence ghoul dying.
They would have to hunker down and try and keep him as warm and sheltered as possible. They settled down where they would still be visible from the road but had some shelter from the trees and formed a ghoul pile around the small ghoul with the warmest of the pack closest to him.
And then the waiting game started.
