Poor Scotty

After using his optic blasts to destroy a falling air conditioning unit and save all these jerks' lives, they obviously decide to kill Scott Summers. For some reason they run towards a 'walking death ray' with a spiffy little bow tie. Marvel universe mobs are violent jerks with no sense of self preservation. People try this shit on the Hulk!

In what's arguably the earliest serious examination of the nascent mutant metaphor, Scott experiences public rejection and feels he can't return to the orphanage. Working against that is the very privileged and passing Xavier collaborating with the FBI - an organisation that has gone to war with plenty of minorities. They harassed the fuck out of the Black Panthers and MLK, for instance, and may have killed the latter. Scott jumps a freight train while Chuck introduces Fred Duncan to his idea of psychic consent. They ring the orphanage but learn that they lost him.

As Charles reaches an agreement with the FBI and follows the leads he's given, Scott panics and jumps off the boxcar. He is welcomed by a community of unhoused gentlemen and invited to join their meal. Two of them peg him as a rich college kid and try to rob him, showing that oppression is no guarantee of solidarity. As he's being pinned by ridiculous stereotypes, police arrive and they scatter. Unrealistically, the cops have no interest in the other homeless people.

Scott thinks he's saved, but very realistically the dipshit cops don't listen to him and escalate the situation with their blundering. Despite the fact they're looking to 'help' a runaway from an orphanage, they treat Scott like a monster. The cops are oafish and cowardly, which while realistic, is not how Marvel generally portrays them. He's very lucky to run into another mutant out there, though it's not Chuck (he'll come along later.)

The original 60s run of the X-Men has been retroactively presented as a civil rights metaphor, but it's not really on the page. They're all white and pretty, and aside from Scott come from comfortable middle class backgrounds. Charles Xavier is not only obscenely wealthy and educated, but works with law enforcement like the FBI (later X-Men actually broke into the Pentagon to steal the records from Chuck's time with them.) He's a paraplegic, but it isn't a big part of his character - more a plot device to keep him from going on missions.

It's through Scott that any serious exploration of intersectionality happens. He has lived in orphanages for as long as he can remember, is poor and traumatised, experiences massive difficulty due to his mutation and disability, and can only pass for 'human' with special glasses. He's lived a different life to the rest of the O5, and doesn't quite fit in with them socially. His childhood was retconned to be MUCH worse than is shown here, but everything you need to know about Scott Summers' social differences to his peers are right here.
