Unsurprisingly, given the weather, the outstanding FA Cup 3rd Round game between Nottingham Forest and Burnley has been postponed again.
The issue is, the winner of that game is scheduled to play Newcastle on the 12th. So the Nottingham v Burnley game has been rescheduled to Wednesday the 8th at 7 o'clock.
There's an important issue and consideration for scheduling that comes into play for teams in tier 3 downwards and that is even semi-professional teams are uncommon. I have a vague memory of reading about a tier 3 team who were professional in the past few months, but I can't remember which team that was.
Digging around, it seems neither Nottingham Forest nor Burnley women's teams are fully professional. Nottingham Forest have committed to their women's team being fully professional by the 2025/26 season and Burley FC announced a plan in 2021 to eventually professionalise the women's team, but there's not much information out there since then on the progress.
Even then, what constitutes being "fully professional" does not necessarily mean "earns enough to live on their football salary". The WSL has been a fully professional league for some years now, yet there have been various reports within the last 2 years (with confirmations by players and coaches) that some players received a salary of £20,000 and have worked second jobs. The Championship are a semi-professional league with some professional teams, but the majority of their players earn under £20,000 a year.
There's a reasonable chance players at Nottingham Forest and Burnley have second jobs. So, having to rearrange at short notice could mean some players will have to work in the day, then play in the evening. Then the winning team could go on to work their usual shifts again the next few days, then play Newcastle on Sunday. With training in there somewhere as well.
Of course, there isn't really much choice and the delays couldn't be prevented. The teams can't control the weather. Women's rugby games in various tiers had to be called off today as well because they don't have professional standard pitches and many pitches were either frozen, covered in snow, or temporarily a waterlogged chilly mud swamp. None of which are safe to play on.
We know there's a huge disparity between the WSL teams and some of the other teams that have made it to the fourth round of the FA Cup, but the more you think about it the more the other teams have to juggle and overcome. There was a news article by Kathryn Batte last year about the Championship and their financial challenges, including that competing in the League Cup ends up costing teams more than they get back from it:
Now, that situation is only going to be more challenging for teams lower down in the FA Cup. The prize money for the FA Cup at each stage has improved, but for the qualifying round and the first 3 rounds after that, teams likely spend more competing than they get back. For non-professional teams, that's another burden to shoulder.

Not originally named in the squad for the COVID-delayed 2021 Rugby World Cup, Harper was called up after the first two pool games to replace the injured Laura Keates.

"Just imagine what we can do with more games and more resources. I'm really proud to be Canadian and I think there's a bright future ahead of us."
--The Canucks’ captain Sophie de Goede after Canada lost 19-26 to England in their World Cup semi-final at Eden Park.
When you think that out of the final four, Canada is the only team who is not fully professional; yes there’s a lot of potential for them, given the means, and they showed on the World stage how much they deserve it!

A sporting account… on Tumblr?
Bit of an experiment, this. Hopefully not a mistake.
Hello. I’m Rafael. I play boccia, which is a Paralympic sport (e.g., a sport which is in the Paralympics, like goalball, wheelchair rugby, etc). It’s a cousin of pétanque, lawn bowls, curling, and all those other sports whose ancient ancestor is someone going “I bet I can get my rock closer to that pebble over there than you can get yours”. Boccia is played indoors, in a space almost exactly the same size as a badminton court, as individuals, in pairs, or teams of 3. In the UK the overwhelming emphasis is on individual play, although pairs and teams competition is growing in global significance.
I’m a member of the newly reformed England squad, run by our governing body Boccia England, and I’m classified as a BC3 athlete - that means that instead of throwing or kicking the balls, we roll them down a ramp instead. The ramp is positioned, and balls set up on it for us, by a Ramp Operator - for me, that’s either one of my personal assistants, or increasingly, my partner. The RO isn’t allowed to see what’s going on on the court, they have to keep their back to it at all times during matchplay - they’re only allowed to physically help, not tactically help.
Playing boccia changed my life - I’ve always been a competitive person but until I discovered the sport in 2012, aged 27, had not only no access to participate in sports but no idea that a sport I could meaningfully play even existed. My sporting career is a direct legacy of the 2012 London Paralympics; it was the presentation of the Boccia UK Squad at the opening ceremony which resulted in the penny dropping. I was at my first club session within a few weeks, and attended my first competition a few weeks after that - I won a bronze medal, and was hooked.
My breakout year was the 2018-2019 season; our last complete season before the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt. That year I zoomed my way through the Heathcoat Cup national finals - our ‘second division’ competition, a precious space for beginner and improving players to learn their trade without getting steamrollered by the pros - which qualified me directly into the BE Cup Finals, which is the de facto England national championship. I won my pool, unbeaten, and ultimately came 4th, which saw me begin the 2019-2020 season ranked 5th in England, behind two international athletes and two England players.
After that came a funny couple of years; half a season and two bronze medals in BE Cup Qualifiers before the pandemic stopped everything, and then a heavily modified “Back to Boccia” season for 2021-2022, at which I won the gold medal at two of the three Back To Boccia Cup events, went and won the qualifying tournament for the German National Boccia Championships in Düsseldorf - broadening my horizons as a dual national - before being selected for my very first Boccia UK Challenger. The Challengers are events run by BUK to provide the UK national squad, and selected others from the home countries, with additional formal competition experience. At the Gloucester Challenger there were 4 Boccia UK-supported athletes; two men from the World Class Programme and two women being supported in their development with coaching and world-class equipment, including Paralympian Scott McCowan, who had come 4th in Tokyo just nine months earlier. I beat all four UK athletes, and ultimately came second to my England colleague Matt Berry. That silver medal is my greatest achievement, to date. Matt and I followed that up with another one-two finish at the special, pandemic-edition competition run within the talent pathway as a substitute for the England national championships, which resulted in my being selected for my very first UK National Championships, where I lost only to the two McCowan brothers, Paralympians both, and ultimately came 6th. Just a fortnight later I was in Berlin, where I won the silver medal in the German National Championships.
I’ve just kicked off the 2022-2023 season with a very solid 5th place at the first BE Cup qualifier competition, and I’m off up to the SMILE Boccia Open tomorrow, to train up a shiny new personal assistant as a ramp operator. Wish us luck!

Norway avenged Sweden and Denmark in the women's handball world cup when they beat France. Scandis rejoice! 🇳🇴 🇩🇰 🇸🇪 I think you'd like handball, it's fast paced with excitement. Norway were down 6 goals in 1st half but decreased it to 4. In 2nd they scored 4 goals in 3 minutes and equalized. Won 29-22. Actually has a bit in common with football. It's a smaller area to overview so you see high defense (pressure play) & how the defenders are moved by off ball movements to find spaces easy.
That sounds cool! Do they have euros or worlds again next year? I'll watch if you remind me! I've fulfilled my quota of one new sport per year in 2021, I watched rugby (two whole kinds!)

With everything happening between US soccer and the USWNT and the CWHL folding and NWHL still navigating All That™️and the WNBA in playoffs I haven’t seen anyone bring this up
The World Rugby Association just became one of the first (maybe the actual first I haven’t checked don’t quote me?) major sporting associations to make their World Cup names gender neutral. They’ve completely done away with the the term “Women’s World Cup” in favor of Rugby World Cup 2021 along with a commitment to supporting women’s rugby at every level.
There’s not a lot of us talking about rugby, but this is a HUGE step forward for us and it shouldn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the sporting world🤷🏼♀️

Canada’s game versus Italy yesterday was so thrilling, I did not get my phone out to take pictures or video. They won 22-12 against a spirited Azzuri side, and secured their place in the quarterfinals! The Canucks have been playing excellent, powerful rugby, like their opening game against Japan. I believe they can go far!
