A sporting account… on Tumblr?
Bit of an experiment, this. Hopefully not a mistake.
Hello. I’m Rafael. I play boccia, which is a Paralympic sport (e.g., a sport which is in the Paralympics, like goalball, wheelchair rugby, etc). It’s a cousin of pétanque, lawn bowls, curling, and all those other sports whose ancient ancestor is someone going “I bet I can get my rock closer to that pebble over there than you can get yours”. Boccia is played indoors, in a space almost exactly the same size as a badminton court, as individuals, in pairs, or teams of 3. In the UK the overwhelming emphasis is on individual play, although pairs and teams competition is growing in global significance.
I’m a member of the newly reformed England squad, run by our governing body Boccia England, and I’m classified as a BC3 athlete - that means that instead of throwing or kicking the balls, we roll them down a ramp instead. The ramp is positioned, and balls set up on it for us, by a Ramp Operator - for me, that’s either one of my personal assistants, or increasingly, my partner. The RO isn’t allowed to see what’s going on on the court, they have to keep their back to it at all times during matchplay - they’re only allowed to physically help, not tactically help.
Playing boccia changed my life - I’ve always been a competitive person but until I discovered the sport in 2012, aged 27, had not only no access to participate in sports but no idea that a sport I could meaningfully play even existed. My sporting career is a direct legacy of the 2012 London Paralympics; it was the presentation of the Boccia UK Squad at the opening ceremony which resulted in the penny dropping. I was at my first club session within a few weeks, and attended my first competition a few weeks after that - I won a bronze medal, and was hooked.
My breakout year was the 2018-2019 season; our last complete season before the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt. That year I zoomed my way through the Heathcoat Cup national finals - our ‘second division’ competition, a precious space for beginner and improving players to learn their trade without getting steamrollered by the pros - which qualified me directly into the BE Cup Finals, which is the de facto England national championship. I won my pool, unbeaten, and ultimately came 4th, which saw me begin the 2019-2020 season ranked 5th in England, behind two international athletes and two England players.
After that came a funny couple of years; half a season and two bronze medals in BE Cup Qualifiers before the pandemic stopped everything, and then a heavily modified “Back to Boccia” season for 2021-2022, at which I won the gold medal at two of the three Back To Boccia Cup events, went and won the qualifying tournament for the German National Boccia Championships in Düsseldorf - broadening my horizons as a dual national - before being selected for my very first Boccia UK Challenger. The Challengers are events run by BUK to provide the UK national squad, and selected others from the home countries, with additional formal competition experience. At the Gloucester Challenger there were 4 Boccia UK-supported athletes; two men from the World Class Programme and two women being supported in their development with coaching and world-class equipment, including Paralympian Scott McCowan, who had come 4th in Tokyo just nine months earlier. I beat all four UK athletes, and ultimately came second to my England colleague Matt Berry. That silver medal is my greatest achievement, to date. Matt and I followed that up with another one-two finish at the special, pandemic-edition competition run within the talent pathway as a substitute for the England national championships, which resulted in my being selected for my very first UK National Championships, where I lost only to the two McCowan brothers, Paralympians both, and ultimately came 6th. Just a fortnight later I was in Berlin, where I won the silver medal in the German National Championships.
I’ve just kicked off the 2022-2023 season with a very solid 5th place at the first BE Cup qualifier competition, and I’m off up to the SMILE Boccia Open tomorrow, to train up a shiny new personal assistant as a ramp operator. Wish us luck!

Moana Pasifika host the Gallagher Chiefs on the same day (Friday 10 February) at Mount Smart Stadium. It will be a repeat of Moana Pasifika’s inaugural pre-season game in 2022 where they lost 61-7 to the Gallagher Chiefs. With a season of DHL Super Rugby Pacific under their belt, Moana Pasifika will be out to improve on their 2022 pre-season effort against the Gallagher Chiefs and make an early statement.

Blog #10 Hey guys welcome back, today's topic is a big one. Today we are going to talk about the Mens Rugby World Cup. The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. The tournament was first held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand and South Africa three times, Australia twice, and England once. South Africa is the current champion, having defeated England in the 2019 tournament final. Sixteen teams participated in the tournament from 1987 until 1995; since 1999, twenty teams have participated in each tournament. Japan hosted the 2019 Rugby World Cup and France will host the next in 2023. Beginning in 2021, the women's equivalent tournament was officially renamed Rugby World Cup to promote equality with the men's game. Make sure to watch the next world cup in 2023. It's a very exciting time in the world of rugby and certainly worth watching. See you guys next week!

Back to Back to Back² for the Kangaroos
The 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England has come to a close. Delayed by a year because of covid, this year’s edition was the first time the Men’s, Women’s, and Wheelchair Rugby League World Cups were held at the same time. With England winning the wheelchair tournament, and Australia winning both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
The Australian Men’s team did not lose a game on their way to the final, with their jumbled numbers proving no problem, only conceding 32 points up until the final, giving up 10 more against Samoa as they won the final by a margin of 20 points. It would only be fitting that Australian Captain James Tedesco would be the player of the match in the final, scoring two tries.
Australia also had the joint leading point scorer for the 2021 edition of the world cup in Nathan Cleary, who missed the first game due to a selection battle with fellow half-back Daly Cherry-Evans with 68 points, and the leading try scorer in Josh Addo-Carr with 12 tries (for a total of 48 points). Addo-Carr would also join fellow Australians: Cameron Murray, Liam Martin, and Harry Grant in the Men’s team of the tournament.

The Australian women’s team was even more dominant throughout the tournament, only conceding 12 points, all to New Zealand, as they also did not lose a game, the closest being a 10-8 win against New Zealand in the group stage. In the final, played before the Men’s game, they defeated New Zealand 54-4 in what was truly a more one-sided display than their previous thrilling encounter, with coach Ricky Henry ruing his side’s freeze on the big stage.
Surprisingly with having the lowest amount of points conceded, this did not convert into having the most points scored by a single player, perhaps due to two players sharing the goal-kicking duties on Australia’s part, but the award went to England’s Tara-Jane Stanley with 6 tries and 19 goals, totaling 62 points. Australia’s Julia Robinson, however, did score the most tries in the tournament with 7. This did not earn Robinson a spot in the women’s team of the tournament, with 5 of her countrywomen taking spots in front of her.

The only final not contested by Australia was the Wheelchair rugby, with England and France, the two best teams before the tournament and throughout duking it out for top honours. In the end, England captain Tom Halliwell scored the final and match-winning try to defeat France 28-24. It would be little consultation for the french in that they had both the most try scorer and point scorer with Moustafa Abassi (17) and Lionel Alazard (92) respectively.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland says the Welsh Rugby Union’s 60-cap rule needs to be looked at amid uncertainty over the future of players’ contracts.
Wales do not select players with fewer than 60 caps who play outdoor the united states, but that is beneath assessment. When asked whether the modern rule needs to be changed, Gatland replied: “I suppose it is a PRB (Professional Rugby Board) choice.
Gatland brought: “When you look at the cease of this year, there are 3 gamers who may not be available to us for the World Cup below the modern policies. We want to be pragmatic and it’d be disappointing if some gamers pass over out on the World Cup.
Warren Gatland has returned to coach Wales, replacing Wayne Pivac in December 2022
Claims were made by an ex-Wales women’s manager and a former chairwoman of the Welsh Rugby Union’s professional board
Why shoot ourselves inside the foot if we do not want to? There has been so much turmoil in phrases of getting the settlement sorted between the union and the regions. I think it would be a fine step moving forwards.
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and four regions are negotiating a brand new monetary settlement for professional rugby in Wales. This is performed via the PRB, which runs the expert game in Wales.
No agreement has been signed, with players out of settlement on the give up of the season, therefore they are not able to formally commit to new deals. Between 70 and ninety nearby players are believed to be out of settlement at the quit of the season.

The 60-cap rule is intertwined with that manner and any choice on it may affect the careers of Will Rowlands and Japan-based totally Cory Hill and Jake Ball, with the trio all falling underneath the 60 global caps threshold.
Rowlands will go away Dragons on the quit of the season to sign up for Racing ninety two and might presently be ineligible for the World Cup in France, which starts offevolved in September.

“They need to consider their own non-public situation and that is flawlessly understandable from my point of view.
“I’d like to make certain we hold our pinnacle gamers in Wales. I don’t know if we want to look at the 60-cap rule due to the fact in the meanwhile is it healthy for cause with this a good deal uncertainty in the game in Wales?
“We want to maintain in angle it’s nonetheless January at the moment. If you move lower back some of years those contracts did not was mentioned until March.
