It seems that nature is paying our debt, but it is all deceptive: snowflakes will begin to fall, frost will cover the rowan fruit, puddles will begin to freeze, and the ground will begin to freeze little by little. Late autumn is a harbinger of winter, and this article describes how and why to whitewash for trees.

SELECTING INGREDIENTS FOR WHITEWASH FOR TREES LACQUERS FOR FRUIT TREES Preparation at home. Let's start with the composition, which is prepared with our own hands, wearing, of course, protective rubber gloves beforehand, and if it's a girl, then a short bunch of hair tied and a respirator. The secret from the master! If you add only one tablespoon of carbolic acid to this solution, you will otherwise protect your favorite trees from mice. I can't say that this method is 100% reliable, but at one of the sites of our Institute, it worked perfectly.
About the solution: This is not a novelty, but a classic, a solution used by gardeners, probably since the first complete garden was planted. I can not say that the level of protection of trees is high, and there are drawbacks, but the most important trump card is the insignificant price and the primary, so to speak, production of this ingredient (and of course the popularity). When whitewashing young trees, it is necessary to halve the concentration of lime in the solution in order not to harm them.
1a. How to prepare slaked lime? As a rule, the gardener has large pieces of limestone at his disposal. Such lime is considered burnt lime and should be quenched. For this reason, water should be added to the lime very carefully; this reaction causes the water to boil. On one part of the lime, there should be about one and a half parts of water. Further, dilute 2.5 kg of already extinguished lime with water and add 500 grams of copper sulfate, by this composition the trees can be treated accurately, from below to above, protecting the eyes, of course.
2. Option 2: Grandfather's recipe If you can not make a stucco composition, you can use a mixture of clay and cowpeas to coat the trunk of the tree. To prepare such an interesting mixture, you should take 2 kg of quicklime (we already know how to quench), 1 kg of clay, 1 kg of cowpeas, and 300 grams of copper alum. 3. Option 3: pre-made mixes On the counter, you can see and ready-made mixture, they are also made on the basis of lime and clay, which is written on the package - "breathable". Everything will be fine, but this composition will remain on the tree for several months, and if it suddenly rains, it will wash away at once. In view of this, if you want to use such a mixture, then be prepared to double-wash at least your favorites. Usually, on the shelves, we see special garden water emulsions or acrylic paints that say "garden" on them. How are they different from the usual? The fact that they contain ingredients that protect trees, for example, acrylic coatings contain antifungal and fungicidal ingredients and they quite reliably keep tree trunks safe from 90% of pathogens. However, I'll give you a hint right away: acrylic paint is not breathable at all, so it is not advisable to use it at least on young plants. It is proudly written on the cans of garden water emulsion paint that it protects against any winter frosts. However, while it may have a warming effect on the wood, it definitely does not provide protection against insect pests. Therefore, do not forget to add any copper-containing preparations (250-300 g) per liter and mix everything thoroughly before use.
RULES FOR WHITEWASH FOR TREES Well, I think that so much has been said about composing, it's time to start Whitewash for trees rules. It is usually done at the junction of autumn and winter when the rain is removed to the maximum, otherwise, you will have to do everything earlier or eliminate the consequences of rain. There should be something like cleaning the trunk with a solution that should consist of a kilogram of common salt, a few kilograms of wood ash, and a few bars of soap. All this should be diluted in a bucket of water heated to room temperature. By the way, before carrying out this treatment, in order not to salinize the soil, the bottom of the trunk should be lined with polyethylene film and its edges bent so that the solution can be collected and subsequently removed from the site. It can be washed off with a metal brush, wetting it more in this solution. When treating the trunk, the main thing is not to damage the bark of the plant itself. Immediately after cleaning the entire trunk and wounds, it should be treated with garden varnish, applied well in the cracks. If you don't have a brew, you can make your own caulk: mix two parts clay and one part manure, add one gram of copper sulfate and a pinch of straw powder. Then mix everything thoroughly to make something like a windowpane, which is best for trees.
3. Finally, take a brush So, everything is ready, the compound is ready, the stems are waiting to be protected and renewed, and it's time to take a brush. It is possible not to choose wisely about the brush, you can take any brush, from the cheapest to the most expensive, and you are not likely to use it next season anyway. The only thing I can suggest is to take a brush according to the size of the trunk. In November 1937, the Times of India (ToI) carried a curiously chilling report from the UK. With fears of war rising, and memories of the poison gas attacks of the previous war still vivid, “trials to see whether small children could wear gas masks in the event of an air raid were carried out…” The report explained how officials visited a children’s home called Babies Castle where 70 children, from babies to five years, were selected “by reason of their varying sizes of head” and given black rubber masks to play with. Nurses asked, “Who would like to wear one of these funny faces?” to get them to put them on.
This exercise proved the obvious points that children needed smaller masks and could be induced to wear them (though “babies cannot wear masks”). It was also an early sign of how face masks would become indispensable accessories of the modern age, whether worn for protection or fun or, as with those children, both reasons.
Face masks are omnipresent these days, most obviously because of coronavirus fears. Across the world face masks are being sold out, hoarded or sold at a premium. The Indian government briefly banned exports of masks. The Japanese government is giving subsidies for face mask manufacturers, while one leading company, Kawamoto, has seen its share price zoom by 479 per cent in one month.
One of the many ironies of this current epidemic is that China, which is the source of it, is also the source of most of the world’s face masks. This might seem a good fit of problem and solution, but as the virus spreads rapidly across the world it has made countries uncomfortably aware of their dependence on China for medical supplies. PROTEST MASKS Hong Kong is debating free distribution of face masks, which is particularly ironic since just a few months it tried banning the use of them in public. This is another side of the face mask boom – their use in political protests, as a way to avoid individual identification and punishment, and also to show solidarity with a larger cause. This has become so common that different types of protest masks can be identified, like Black Bloc, a simple black face covering, like a bandanna, or the stylised smiling Guy Fawkes masks of Anonymous.
The growth of surveillance and facial recognition technology, particularly in China, has made use of protests masks even more imperative. In October last year, Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive invoked a British era law to pass the Prohibition on Face Covering Regulation, which criminalises wearing a mask at even lawful protests with a year in jail and a HK$25,000 fine. The law was widely disobeyed, has been challenged in court and seems unlikely to be used when much of Hong Kong is wearing masks for medical reasons.
Hong Kong’s law is far from being an anomaly. There are many such laws across the world, and not just in authoritarian states. Western democracies like Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany all have laws banning facial coverings during protests. The reasons may vary, from Islamophobia to reactions to the violent student protests of the 1960s, and the laws may only rarely be enforced, but there is a clear sense that concealing one’s face is potentially threatening behaviour.
It is also true, of course, that face masks have always been used by criminals. A spate of rural robberies in 18th century Britain lead to what was called the Black Act in 1723, because the perpetrators blacked or concealed their faces. The law mandated the death penalty for doing this and while it was repealed in 1823, the thinking seems to have survived in the Hong Kong law. In India facial concealment during crimes is common – last year robbers looted 30 kg of jewellery from a Tiruchirapalli store while wearing cat and dog masks.
If masks have not featured much in current protests in India it might be because, in an interesting inversion, it is the governing party that has used mask most effectively. The Narendra Modi mask that was created by Manish Bharadia, was a subtle rebuke to the earlier Congress charge of Atal Bihari Vajpayee being the acceptable ‘mukhota’ of the much more radical Sangh, and it also helped make the politician into a brand.
Some of the most intense debates over face masks have taken place in Canada. When student protests’ against hikes in college fees rocked Quebec in 2012, the government passed a law banning face masks during protests, arguing that their use separated legitimate protestors from general miscreants. Montreal’s mayor, Gerald Tremblay summed it up: “When your cause is just and your intentions are good, why hide your face?”
In fact, as Jennifer B.Spiegel notes in her paper ‘Masked Protest in the Age of Austerity” such neat divisions didn’t work. The authorities clearly intended to find ways to fine and discourage individuals, and split the movement – but this required them to identify individuals first. The protestors responded with a carnival like explosion of face masks in all colours and forms. Some came only in face masks – but otherwise nearly nude. One protestor wore a full panda outfit, much like the costumed mascots that are part of sports events.

ENTERTAINMENT & RITUALS This nearly linked politics to the third reason for the popularity of face masks – their use in entertainment and the chance to have anonymous, liberating fun. This has always been a reason to use masks, particularly as part of the anarchic rulebending time of Carnival. During that period a poor person with a mask could pretend to enjoy the life – generally, meaning sex – of the rich, while the rich could get the thrill of slumming for a while.
The use of masks for ritual purposes is ancient. One of the oldest known specimens is a stone mask from over 7000 years back, probably from Palestine, and looking eerily like the smiley face emoji, except for its empty eyes. But masks were very likely known from far earlier, but haven’t survived because they were made with perishable materials. They would have helped priests perform the role of gods or demons in rituals.
Masks also came to be used for protective purposes, to protect the face from the cut and slash of swords. Death masks left in tombs were ways to remember those who had died, and perhaps ensure that their image lasted when the physical flesh of their faces had rotted away. During plagues masks were used from the belief that miasmas, or bad smells spread diseases, and these would at least have stopped airborne infections like today.
Some of these uses started diminishing with time – most formal religions dropped masks and guns made face masks for combat irrelevant (they survive in the sport of fencing). But as Michael Foley notes in his book Isn’t This Fun? Venice was particularly associated with Carnival masks – tourists still buy them by the thousands – and the idea of a Venetian masked ball was taken up by Western culture, and then across the world. Masked parties were a very popular entertainment during the British Raj in India, and in the USA they transmuted into the costumed chaos of Halloween. More recently, events like Burning Man, where participants descend in outrageous, carefully planned costumes, has reinvented the idea for the new millennium.
Artists and the entertainment industry have always been drawn to the many meanings of masked revelry. Verdi’s opera Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) combines the idea with a plot to assassinate a king that was so controversial that the work in its original form was banned. The several Mask of Zorro films involve the idea of a masked hero battling an oppressive regime. Masked comic heros like Batman and Phantom reinvented the idea for a new art form.
Alexandre Dumas’ The Man in the Iron Mask drew on a historical legend of a masked prisoner linked to a king, and also to a tradition of keeping prisoners masked as a way to emphasise their vulnerability. But the power of masks means that this tends to work the other, with the example of the masked Hannibal Lector showing how masks work powerfully with horror films. The masked protagonist of the Phantom of the Opera shows another medical use of masks, to hide the horrors of facial disfigurement.
It was, perhaps, not a surprise that the advent of photography also saw a renewed interest in masks. When one’s face could be easily captured, the desire to avoid this grew. Similarly, the huge growth of social media in recent years, with all its incessant selfies and personal sharing, has created a desire for masked concealment. Phone filters now allow digital masks to be imposed easily. A whole genre of masked musicians has emerged, like Deadmau5 and Slipknot, that use the paradoxical power of masks both to conceal their identities and enhance their brands and masked mystique.
All these meanings of masks gained particular power from two events that concluded a 100 years back. The First World War resulted in a new demand for masks. Medical advances meant that many who would have died in the past survived, but badly disfigured, and masks were created to help them (plastic surgery would only develop during the Second World War). The eerie images of these masks, and the suffering that lay behind them, seem to have influenced many artists in the era between the wars.

PROTECTIVE MASKS The use of poison gas had also required a new kind of protective mask. One of the first was developed by JS Haldane, the father of JBS Haldane, the scientist who came to India towards the end of his life and helped develop scientific institutions here. In Samanth Subramanian’s excellent new biography of the younger Haldane, A Dominant Character, he writes of how the father used the (very willing) son as a guinea pig, almost suffocating him from exposure to vapours as he perfected a practical gas mask that could absorb them.
These lead to a whole new type of protective masks, against bioweapons and radiation, all the terrible new creations of warfare. But it was the second event from 1918-1920 that links most closely to our virus driven demand. This was the great global influenza epidemic that is estimated to have killed far more people than died in the first World War – 17 million just in India, which was five per cent of our population at that time.
There had been global pandemics before, but this one was made worse by new transport systems, fuelled by the demands of war, and also by the fact that it was caused by a virus, a poorly understood entity at that time. Doctors wasted time looking for a bacterium, as in bubonic plague. By the time the airborne nature of the disease spreading was understood, millions had died.
In Pale Rider, Laura Spinney’s history of the epidemic she notes that by 1918 “the wearing of a layered gauze mask over the mouth was recommended – and in Japan this probably marked the beginning of the practice of mask-wearing to protect others from one’s own germs – but health officials disagreed as to whether the masks actually reduced transmission.”
It was only by 1920, when American cities implemented preventive measures that included mask wearing that their value was established. A hundred years on from then we are learning the value, and many meanings, of face masks all over again.

Today we got picked up at our hotel at 7:10am and taken about a mile to the Saigon River to take an hour and a half ride on a power boat up to the Cu Chi Tunnel area. During the boat ride they pointed out a large blue and white building that is used and equipped for Edible bird's nests. These are bird nests created by edible-nest swiftlets, Indian swiftlets, and other swiftlets using solidified saliva, which are harvested for human consumption. They are particularly prized in Chinese culture due to their rarity, high nutritional value in nutrients such as protein, and rich flavor. Edible bird's nests are among the most expensive animal products consumed by humans, with nests being sold at prices up to about $3,000 per pound ($6,600/kg), depending on grading. The type or grading of a bird's nest depends on the type of bird as well as the shape and color of the bird's nest. It is usually white in color, but there also exists a red version that is sometimes called "blood" nest. The Chinese believe that it promotes good health, especially for the skin. The nests have been used in Chinese cooking for over 400 years, most often as bird's nest soup.
Then we were met by our bike tour guide who took us about 30 kilometers out where we got on our bikes and rode through the surrounding countryside on mostly dirt roads. This was an amazing tour! We first rode through the local market where the people in this town shop everyday. Then we headed out into the agricultural area where they grow just about everything. We saw rubber trees and he explained how they get the latex out of the trees. Rice fields, bananas, mangos, places where they dry peppercorns, flowers, jackfruit, papaya, and so many other things. We came across a group of children riding bikes who were excited to get their picture taken with Americans. We stopped for a break at a women’s home where she grows many different types of fruit. She was so sweet and she really wanted to get her picture taken with Jan and me. Our guide told us everytime he goes there she loads him up with fruit to take to his family and she won’t ever let him pay for it. People also raise cows, water buffalo, pigs, ducks, and chickens. It was a beautiful ride. We ended back at the Cu Chi tunnels where we had a delicious lunch next to the Saigon River, and then we toured the tunnels.
The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting tunnels located in the Củ Chi District of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.
The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort.
American soldiers used the term "Black Echo" to describe the conditions within the tunnels. For the Viet Cong, life in the tunnels was difficult. Air, food and water were scarce and the tunnels were infested with ants, venomous centipedes, scorpions, spiders, and rodents. Most of the time, soldiers would spend the day in the tunnels working or resting and come out only at night to scavenge for supplies, tend their crops, or engage the enemy in battle. Sometimes, during periods of heavy bombing or American troop movement, they would be forced to remain underground for many days at a time. Sickness was rampant among the people living in the tunnels, especially malaria, which was the second largest cause of death next to battle wounds. A captured Viet Cong report suggests that at any given time half of a People's Liberation Armed Forces (PLAF) unit had malaria and that "one-hundred percent had intestinal parasites of significance".
The tunnels of Củ Chi did not go unnoticed by U.S. officials. They recognized the advantages that the Viet Cong held with the tunnels, and accordingly launched several major campaigns to search out and destroy the tunnel system. Among the most important of these were Operation Crimp and Operation Cedar Falls.
Operation Crimp began on January 7, 1966, with B-52 bombers dropping 30-ton loads of high explosive onto the region of Củ Chi, effectively turning the once lush jungle into a pockmarked moonscape. Eight thousand troops from the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, and the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment combed the region looking for any clues of PLAF activity.
The operation did not bring about the desired success; for instance, on occasions when troops found a tunnel, they would often underestimate its size. Rarely would anyone be sent in to search the tunnels, as it was so hazardous. The tunnels were often rigged with explosive booby traps or punji stick pits. The two main responses in dealing with a tunnel opening were to flush the entrance with gas, water or hot tar to force the Viet Cong soldiers into the open, or to toss a few grenades down the hole and "crimp" off the opening. This approach proved ineffective due to the design of the tunnels and the strategic use of trap doors and air filtration systems.
However, an Australian specialist engineering troop, 3 Field Troop, under the command of Captain Sandy MacGregor did venture into the tunnels which they searched exhaustively for four days, finding ammunition, radio equipment, medical supplies and food as well as signs of considerable Viet Cong presence. One of their number, Corporal Bob Bowtell, died when he became trapped in a tunnel that turned out to be a dead end. However the Australians pressed on and revealed, for the first time, the immense military significance of the tunnels. At an international press conference in Saigon shortly after Operation Crimp, MacGregor referred to his men as Tunnel Ferrets. An American journalist, having never heard of ferrets, used the term Tunnel Rats and it stuck. Following his troop's discoveries in Củ Chi, Sandy MacGregor was awarded a Military Cross.
From its mistakes, and the Australians' discoveries, U.S. command realized that they needed a new way to approach the dilemma of the tunnels. A general order was issued by General Williamson, the Allied Forces Commander in South Vietnam, to all Allied forces that tunnels had to be properly searched whenever they were discovered. They began training an elite group of volunteers in the art of tunnel warfare, armed only with a handgun, a knife, a flashlight and a piece of string. These specialists, commonly known as "tunnel rats", would enter a tunnel by themselves and travel inch-by-inch cautiously looking ahead for booby traps or cornered PLAF. There was no real doctrine for this approach and despite some very hard work in some sectors of the Army and MACV (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam) to provide some sort of training and resources, this was primarily a new approach that the units trained, equipped and planned for themselves.
Despite this revamped effort at fighting the enemy on their own terms, U.S. operations remained insufficient at eliminating the tunnels completely. In 1967, General William Westmoreland tried launching a larger assault on Củ Chi and the Iron Triangle. Called Operation Cedar Falls, it was similar to the previous Operation Crimp, however on a larger scale with 30,000 troops instead of the 8,000. On January 18, tunnel rats from the 1st BN 5th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division uncovered the Viet Cong district headquarters of Củ Chi, containing half a million documents concerning all types of military strategy. Among the documents were maps of U.S. bases, detailed accounts of PLAF movement from Cambodia into Vietnam, lists of political sympathizers, and even plans for a failed assassination attempt on Robert McNamara.
By 1969, B-52s were freed from bombing North Vietnam and started "carpet bombing" Củ Chi and the rest of the Iron Triangle. Ultimately it proved successful. Towards the end of the war, the tunnels were so heavily bombed that some portions actually caved in and other sections were exposed. But by that time, they had succeeded in protecting the local North Vietnamese units and letting them "survive to fight another day".
Throughout the course of the war, the tunnels in and around Củ Chi proved to be a source of frustration for the U.S. military in Saigon. The Viet Cong had been so well entrenched in the area by 1965 that they were in the unique position of locally being able to control where and when battles would take place. By helping to covertly move supplies and house troops, the tunnels of Củ Chi allowed North Vietnamese fighters in their area of South Vietnam to survive, help prolong the war and increase American costs and casualties until their eventual withdrawal in 1972, and the final defeat of South Vietnam in 1975.
This was such an interesting tour and our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area.

CURRENT AFFAIRS DATED ON 11 TH TO 12 OCT GS-1 Elastocaloric” effect Why in news? When rubbers bands are twisted and untwisted, it produces a cooling effect. This is called the “elastocaloric” effect, and researchers have suggested that it can be used in a very relevant context today. How will it work? Researchers from multiple universities, including Nankai University in China, have found that the elastocaloric effect, if harnessed, may be able to do away with the need of fluid refrigerants used in fridges and air-conditioners. These fluids are susceptible to leakages, and can contribute to global warming. The results of the research were published in the journal Science on Friday. In the elastocaloric effect, the transfer of heat works much the same way as when fluid refrigerants are compressed and expanded. When a rubber band is stretched, it absorbs heat from its environment, and when it is released, it gradually cools down. In order to figure out how the twisting mechanism might be able to enable a fridge, the researchers compared the cooling power of rubber fibres, nylon and polyethylene fishing lines and nickel-titanium wires. They observed high cooling from twist changes in twisted, coiled and supercoiled fibres. They reported that the level of efficiency of the heat exchange in rubber bands “is comparable to that of standard refrigerants and twice as high as stretching the same materials without twisting”. They suggested that their findings may lead to the development of greener, higher-efficiency and lowcost cooling technology. The World Health Organization (WHO) released its first World Vision Report this week, proposing ways to address challenges such as integrating eye care into healthcare systems. Details of the Report The report found that globally, over 2.2 billion people have a vision impairment. In a telling finding, the report said that out of these 2.2 billion, 1 billion people are suffering from conditions that are preventable, or unaddressed. A majority of the cases among these 1 billion cases are of unaddressed presbyopia, at 826 million. This is followed by unaddressed refractive error, at over 120 million. Rural communities, low-income countries and older people bear the brunt of these impairments, the report said. For instance, the age-specific prevalence of presenting distance vision impairment in an urban population of Delhi (20% prevalence among 60-69-year-olds) was one-third lower than that of a rural population in Northern India (28%). The report estimated that over 11.9 million globally have conditions such as glaucoma, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy, which could have been prevented. The estimated cost of preventing conditions among these 11.9 million people is over $5.8 billion. Status in India Surgeries for cataract, which is the leading cause of blindness globally, have shown improvements over time, in low middle-income countries. In India the rate of cataract surgery has increased nine-fold (6,000 per million population) between 1981 and 2012. This has been possible due to the National Programme for Control of Blindness, which was launched in 1976 and under which cataract surgeries were performed on 6.5 million people in 2016-2017, the report said. What was Ethiopia's conflict with Eritrea about, and what did Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed do? The embrace that ended a 20-year war In July 2018, Abiy Ahmed, who had become Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the second-largest country in Africa by population, three months ago, stepped across the border into neighbouring Eritrea. In the Eritrean capital Asmara, he held President Isaias Afwerki in a warm and tight embrace, announcing to the world, that the 20-year war that had killed at least 80,000 people in two of Africa's poorest countries, had finally come to an end. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Afwerki announced the resumption of trade, diplomatic, and travel ties between their two countries, and "a new era of peace and friendship" in the war-bloodied Horn of Africa. A second agreement was signed between the two countries in September 2018 in Jeddah, Saudi Aradia. History of the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict In April 1993, Eritrea broke from its federation with Ethiopia, becoming an independent country that was located strategically at the mouth of the Red Sea on the Horn of Africa, in close proximity to one of the world's most crucial shipping lanes. Independence was the outcome of a 30-year war by Eritrean liberation fighters against Ethiopia, which had annexed the small multiethnic territory to its north in 1962. End of war, beginning of stalemate In June 2000, the two countries signed an Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities. It was followed, in December that year, by a Peace Agreement in Algiers, Algeria. This agreement formally ended the war and established a Boundary Commission to settle the dispute. The Commission gave its "final and binding" ruling in April 2002. Badme was awarded to Eritrea. However, Ethiopia refused to accept the decision without additional conditions, and a stalemate ensued. Ethiopia refused to give up control over Badme, and the border kept erupting in clashes. On road to peace, enter Abiy Ahmed In 2017, Ethiopia's ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) indicated that it was looking to change its relationship with Eritrea. In April 2018, Abiy Ahmed, then a 41-year-old former Army officer who had fought in the war, became Prime Minister. Things picked up pace immediately. In June, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed broke the nearly two-decade stalemate, announcing that Addis Ababa would abide by the full terms of the 2000 agreement. On July 8, 2018, a day before he travelled to meet President Afwerki in Asmara, Prime Minister Ahmed made a rousing declaration: "There is no longer a border between Eritrea and Ethiopia because a bridge of love has destroyed it". The peace deal with Eritrea opened up Eritrean ports for Ethiopian use, most prominently the port of Assab, located at the tip of the country's 'tail', to balance its reliance on Djibouti. Peace was in Eritrea's interest, too. The UN Human Rights Commission had repeatedly accused Eritrea of serious violations. The international pressure on its government had increased greatly after Eritreans fleeing the war and compulsory military service flooded European shores at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015-16. GS-3 Dairy industry in India Context Milk, in the Indian context, is also a ‘superior’ food with income elasticity of demand greater than one. What makes milk and milk products such a big deal for India? Milk is the country’s largest “crop”. In 2018-19, the estimated production of milk, at 187.75 million tonnes (mt), was more than that of paddy (174.63 mt) or wheat (102.19 mt). CURRENT AFFAIRS DATED ON 11 TH TO 12 OCT The value of milk output (Rs 5,63,250 crore at an average farm-gate rate of Rs 30/kg) far exceeded paddy’s (Rs 3,05,602 crore at a minimum support price of Rs 1,750/quintal) and wheat’s (Rs 1,88,030 crore at Rs 1,840/quintal). Milk is, moreover, a source of liquidity for farmers, as it is sold daily and generates cash to take care of routine household expenses, unlike other crops that are marketed only once or twice a year. But milk matters equally to consumers in India, because it meets the animal protein/fat requirements of a significant portion of the population that is vegetarian. Milk, in the Indian context, is also a ‘superior’ food with income elasticity of demand greater than one. This means that as incomes rise, the demand for milk goes up even more. The moment families experience some upward mobility, they are likely to put desi ghee (butter fat) rather than vanaspati (vegetable fat) on their rotis. So, where does the RCEP come in? Global dairy trade takes place not in milk, but in the solids that derive from it — mainly milk powder, butter/butter oil, and cheese. India isn’t a major player in the world market. Till the eighties, it used to import up to 50,000-60,000 tonnes of skim milk powder and 10,000- 15,000 tonnes of butter oil annually, largely channelised through the National Dairy Development Board. Over the past couple of decades, with sustained production increases, the country has become self-sufficient, or even marginally surplus. If dairy products are covered under an RCEP deal, India may have to allow members of the bloc greater access to its market, whether through phased duty reductions or more liberal tariff rate quotas (TRQs). There is an already existing TRQ for milk powder, which enables import of up to 10,000 tonnes per year at 15% customs duty, and quantities beyond that at the regular rate of 60%. The Indian dairy industry is resisting any enhanced TRQs or other import concessions, even if extended only to RCEP countries, as opposed to the US or European Union. Which are the major global dairy players within the RCEP group? CURRENT AFFAIRS DATED ON 11 TH TO 12 OCT Only New Zealand and Australia. The two countries together exported 19,37,000 tonnes of milk power, 5,18,000 tonnes of butter/fat and 4,94,000 tonnes of cheese in 2018, accounting for 44.5%, 58.3% and 24.8% of the world trade respectively in these commodities. New Zealand, in particular, hardly has a domestic market for dairy products. In 2018, 93.4% of its milk powder, 94.5% of its butter, and 83.6% of its cheese production was exported. . Access to this market will obviously benefit the predominantly export-oriented dairy industry of New Zealand and Australia. What are the specific dairy segments that overseas suppliers would target? India’s imports primarily comprise whey products and cheese, which have limited consumer markets in the country. For all the hype, the domestic market for cheese is just Rs 1,400-1,500 crore, of which Rs 900- 1,000 crore goes for industrial use (basically pizza-making), and only the balance is sold in consumer packs. There may not be too many takers for foreign ice cream or yogurt brands either. What New Zealand and Australia would really be eying is the Indian market for commodities, viz. milk powder and fat. That is where the volumes are — which Malaysia and Indonesia successfully exploited in palm oil, as did Argentina and Brazil in soyabean oil and Ukraine in sunflower oil. RCEP could perhaps end up doing to dairy what the free trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) did in palm oil, fear many in the industry in India. Global Competitiveness Report Why in news? CURRENT AFFAIRS DATED ON 11 TH TO 12 OCT The latest edition of the Global Competitiveness Report, which was first launched in 1979, ranks India at 68th position among 141 countries – that's 10 ranks below its 2018 position in the same index. The slippage this year, however, is not just because India's score in the Global Competitiveness Index fell, albeit marginally, but also because several other close competitors surged ahead. What is GCI? This is the fourth version of the global competitiveness index – hence referred to as GCI 4.0 – and it was introduced in 2018. The 141 countries mapped by this year's GCI account for 99 per cent of the world's GDP. The basic notion behind the GCI is to map the factors that determine the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in a country. The TFP is essentially the efficiency with which different factors of production such as land, labour and capital are put to use to create the final product. It is believed that it is the TFP in an economy that determines the long-term economic growth of a country. So what factors does GCI map? According to the report, the GCI 4.0 is “the product of an aggregation of 103 individual indicators, derived from a combination of data from international organizations as well as from the World Economic Forum’s Executive Opinion Survey”. The GCI 4.0 tracks data and/or responses on 12 factors divided into 4 broad categories. The first category is the “Enabling Environment” and this includes factors such as the state of infrastructure, institutions, the macroeconomic stability of the country and its ability to adopt new technology. The second category is “Human Capital” and includes health and level of skills in the economy. The third is the state of “Markets” such as those for labour, product, financial and the overall market size. The last category is “Innovation Ecosystem” which includes business dynamism and innovation capability. CURRENT AFFAIRS DATED ON 11 TH TO 12 OCT Why did India fall in the Global Competitiveness Index? Each of these 12 factors will further include sub-factors. For example, within “Institutions” under the “Enabling Environment” category, the GCI tracks the performance on detailed factors such as the performance of the public sector, the level of transparency and corruption, the state of corporate governance, the incidence of terrorism etc. Overall, there are a total of 103 individual factors that GCI 4.0 maps to arrive at the final result. How are countries ranked? According to the report, “a country’s performance on the overall GCI results as well as each of its components is reported as a ‘progress score’ on a 0-to-100 scale, where 100 represents the ‘frontier’, an ideal state where an issue ceases to be a constraint to productivity growth”. For example, the average GCI score across the 141 economies that were studied this year was 60.7. This means that the ‘distance to the frontier’ stands at almost 40 points. How did India fare? India's 2019 overall score (61.4) fell by merely 0.7 when compared to its 2018 score. But this slippage was enough for it to slide down 10 ranks in the list. The report states: “In South Asia, India, in 68th position, loses ground in the rankings despite a relatively stable score, mostly due to faster improvements of several countries previously ranked lower”. Some of the countries that were close to India and made rapid progress were Colombia (which had a score of 62.7, up 1.1 points from last year, and now ranked 57th), Azerbaijan (62.7, +2.7, 58th), South Africa (62.4, +1.7, 60th) and Turkey (62.1, +0.5, 61st). India trails China (28th, 73.9) by 40 places and 14 points. India’s growth will remain weaker than in the recent past, and the drivers of the deceleration are multiple, Moody’s said. Moody’s Investors Service has pegged India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the current financial year at 5.8%, lower than what the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) projected last week at 6.1%. Details India’s growth will remain weaker than in the recent past, and the drivers of the deceleration are multiple, Moody’s said. “We forecast real GDP growth to decline to 5.8% in the fiscal year ending March 2020 (fiscal 2019) from 6.8% in fiscal 2018, and to pick up to 6.6% in fiscal 2020 and around 7% over the medium term,” the rating agency said. To better gauge the impact of climate change on the Hindu Kush mountains, which includes the Himalayas, and spruce up data-gathering, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will collaborate with meteorological agencies in China and Pakistan, among others, to provide climate forecast services to countries in the region. About the collaboration Earlier this month, the IMD organised a workshop to discuss ways to establish a regional climate centre that will provide forecasting services and climate analyses. It will be under the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and take a few years to take shape. The Hindu-Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region is considered the Third Pole [after the North and South Poles], and has significant implications for climate. However, data-gathering here is sparse. We are discussing a system whereby countries can share data and improve forecasts and predictions. The WMO proposal was to have nodal centres in Islamabad, Delhi and Beijing Largest store of snow The HKH region spans Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It traverses about 5 million square kilometres and hosts a large and culturally diverse population. The Third Pole, which contains vast cryospheric zones, is also the world’s largest store of snow and ice outside the polar region. Alongside forecasting weather over long periods, the regional centres would provide data services, training and capacity-building, research and development. Threat to region A report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last month highlighted the threat to the HKH region from global warming. Fast, Cheap, and Absolutely Terrifying: The Kugoo S1 Electric Scooter
Our verdict of the Kugoo S1: If you are keen to get in on the electric scooter trend, the Kugoo S1 is fun, compact, fast, and has a good battery–just don't expect a smooth ride!810
Electric scooters are gaining popularity, and there are options at the budget end of the market worth considering. Many are advertised as transport for the last mile, or urban commuting vehicles. All of them are way too much fun.
Today we are looking at the Kugoo S1, a low price electric scooter that promises 30km (18 miles) of range and speeds of up to 30km/h (18mph).

Getting Started
The S1 is available for $339.99 from GeekBuying, which puts it at the budget end of the price range. Not much comes in the box. Alongside the scooter, you get the 42V 1.5A charging pack, and a comprehensive but straightforward manual.
The manual suffers a little from translation but covers everything needed to get started. The scooter charges via a connector next to the primary hinge and a red/green LED indicator on the charge pack shows when charging finishes. Charge time is around 4 hours from empty to full.
Whenever you receive anything you plan to ride on or in, the first thing to do is check it for safety. I found the S1 to be put together well. Nothing needs tightening, and the build feels solid. Before finding out just how terrifying 30km/h on a scooter is, let’s look at the specs.

A couple of things jump out immediately from these specs.
Kugoo has priced the S1 a little cheaper than the Xiaomi M365, the most obvious competitor. The differences don’t stop there either.
The 350W motor is more powerful than the M365 and many others at this price. It weighs less, but can take more weight, and has a faster claimed top speed.
One notable difference is the inclusion of allegedly “Military Grade” non-pneumatic wheels made seemingly from some kind of hardened rubber. The S1 does, however, have shocks front and back to compensate for the lack of air in the tires.
Also missing here is a rear disc brake. The S1 uses a front mounted regenerative magnet brake and a rear stomp brake which is confusingly listed as an emergency brake in the manual.
On paper, the S1 looks good. Does the experience match up to the numbers?
Setting Off
Unfolding the S1 is intuitive. The back brake doubles as a catch to hold the folded scooter together. The main hinge clicks into place easily, and the adjustable height bars are held in place with a quick release clamp. The bars clip into the main display and feel surprisingly robust given their design.
The S1 turns on using one of 5 buttons mounted to the OLED display. The color display is easy to see even in bright conditions and displays your current speed, speed setting from one to three, battery level, and a choice between total distance traveled, current trip travel and elapsed time.
Two thumb paddles control acceleration and braking. Setting off was smooth, and acceleration is constant. The scooter defaults to speed 1 which presumably is the speed that the 30KM range is based on.
The Speed
Before trying the S1, I assumed Kugoo would have added the lowest speed setting as a way of claiming massive range, and it would be too slow to actually be useful or fun. I was surprised to find that even the lowest speed settings were more than fast enough for moving around a smooth surfaced urban environment.
Practicality aside, I was expecting to have to crank up the speed to have fun, and I was wrong. The speedometer measured 17km/h (10mph) maximum for speed setting 1, and if I were trying to conserve battery life, I’d be perfectly happy traveling this fast.
That said, speed settings 2 and 3 topped out at 22 and 28km/h (14 and 17mph), and felt significantly faster. I weigh 80KG, so the claimed top speed of 30km/h is certainly possible.
Just to make sure that the onboard display was accurate I set up a rudimentary speed test to measure distance traveled per elapsed camera frame. I found the speedometer to be accurate.
Personal experiences will of course vary, but I found the top speed of this scooter to be in that sweet spot where fun meets certain injury if something goes wrong.
In other words—if you want speed at a low budget you will not be disappointed. Just don’t come to us if you break a collarbone or two.
The Brakes
My first experience with the left thumb-activated brake was… interesting. Having read up on the Kugoo S1 before starting, I was assuming to find the braking force underwhelming. I found the opposite to be true, and the regenerative magnetic brake took a large chunk off my speed instantly, causing me almost to jump over the front bars.
After adjusting to this, I found it to be relatively easy to judge when to start braking, and as my time with the S1 continued I found that the brake mellowed out somewhat.
While the stopping power of the brake is okay for usage in a controlled environment, the claimed stopping distance of 4 meters seems to only apply to the lowest speed setting.
The rear foot brake also triggers the front brake, and according to the manual is only for emergencies. Anyone coming from a non-electric scooter will find this a strange adjustment.
I’m not entirely convinced that the back brake did trigger the front either. I noticed a marked difference when using the thumb trigger in conjunction with the stomp brake, despite the manual warning me not to, and the combination of both brought the stopping distance down significantly.
I don’t quite understand the omission of a disc brake on the back wheel of the S1. Perhaps it was a price saving measure, or they just thought it wasn’t needed, but I feel it could have added an extra level of stopping power.
Nevertheless, at no point did I feel out of control with the Kugoo S1, though I can imagine those less experienced with scooters falling foul of the odd brake setup. Also, be wary of the potential savage first few hours of brake use!
The Ride
Riding the Kugoo S1 is as smooth as the surface you choose to ride on. As predicted, the lack of air in the tires does make a difference. While it is an advantage on smooth ground and contributes to the feeling of speed, as soon as you move off the smooth ground you are going to feel it!
The front and rear shocks likely contribute to a slightly more comfortable ride, but I found my wrists and feet to be aching after my first day riding. I spent a lot more time on the S1 than most people would on their commute, so this might not be a big deal for some people. If comfort is an issue, you may want to look for something with pneumatic tires.
Portability
When folded, the S1 measures 95 x 34 x 18.5 cm (37 x 13 x 7 Inches) and will fit in any car boot. This is mostly due to the way the bars fold down. The design of these bars is one of the coolest features of the Kugoo S1. Folding them out locks them into place, and two thumb buttons release them.
When unfolded, the handlebars can operate at three heights. I measure 180cm and found the second and third settings to be equally comfortable, though I can imagine taller folks being glad of the highest setting.
Folding the S1 requires a combination of pressing down on the release catch and jerking forward the handlebars. This movement is easier to learn with the front wheel up against a wall, but without following a video on how to fold it I wouldn’t have worked it out.
The catch is so stiff that you will feel like you are doing something wrong, and I was close to breaking out the hammer when I finally worked it out. This makes sense, as you don’t want this thing folding by accident on you at 30 km/h!
The Weight
At 24 pounds, The Kugoo S1 is a little lighter than the Xiaomi M365, but this isn’t enough of a difference to matter. The technology that powers electric scooters is heavy, and there is no easy way to get around it. Premium scooters employ carbon fiber bodies to save weight, but ultimately big battery packs are heavy components.
Depending on the user, the S1 can be carried in one hand, but the weight combined with the center of balance makes it unwieldy at best. If you plan to keep this scooter in the garage and just move it into your car boot, it’s not a problem, but if you need to carry it up a set of stairs every day be prepared for a workout.
The Battery
The stated battery range of 30km will be a big draw for many people. Once again, this figure is highly dependent on the weight of the user, along with the environmental temperature, with colder temperatures resulting in less range. The weather was generally good throughout my testing. The battery drained thoroughly twice during testing. Once at 22km, and once at 15km.
Bear in mind this was using multiple speed settings interchangeably and over many different surfaces. Given its performance over my usage, I have no reason to believe that the 30km isn’t attainable on the lowest speed setting. This battery life should be more than adequate for commuting between a car or train and workplace, or for having fun on a day out.
Everything Else
The S1 has 26 front mounted LEDs as a headlight, and a small red LED backlight. Both work fine for visibility, and the front mounted LEDs are bright enough for some evening use. I wouldn’t want to be going full speed in the dark relying solely on them, but they’re fine otherwise.
The kickstand works, and the scooter can be left standing upright. You really don’t want to forget to put it up before you set off though or you may catapult yourself.
Unfortunately, it is attached to the bottom of the scooter in such a way that the scooter can never lie flat on the floor. Not only this, but the metal kickstand edge when folded will scratch your floor. This was clearly an afterthought to an otherwise well-designed scooter.
The Kugoo S1 has no smartphone app, though its large display up front makes one somewhat unnecessary, and the need for a dedicated app for your scooter is dubious at best anyway.
Should You Buy One?
The Kugoo S1 is a tremendous amount of fun, at times the kind of fun that may land you in an ambulance, though that would be no fault of the scooter! Its only main downfall is the lack of air in the tires and the lack of a rear disc brake, but neither of these things are problematic enough to cause any problems.
Before you purchase, you should check local laws. Riding an electric scooter or Segway on a public road or path is illegal in the UK, which makes this decidedly less useful there.
There are other scooters close to this price that may give a more comfortable ride, but the S1 delivers on the three main things it promises. It has a great range, it’s fast, and it folds down to a small size.

Also missing here is a rear disc brake. The S1 uses a front mounted regenerative magnet brake and a rear stomp brake which is confusingly listed as an emergency brake in the manual.
On paper, the S1 looks good. Does the experience match up to the numbers?
Setting Off
Unfolding the S1 is intuitive. The back brake doubles as a catch to hold the folded scooter together. The main hinge clicks into place easily, and the adjustable height bars are held in place with a quick release clamp. The bars clip into the main display and feel surprisingly robust given their design.
The S1 turns on using one of 5 buttons mounted to the OLED display. The color display is easy to see even in bright conditions and displays your current speed, speed setting from one to three, battery level, and a choice between total distance traveled, current trip travel and elapsed time.
Two thumb paddles control acceleration and braking. Setting off was smooth, and acceleration is constant. The scooter defaults to speed 1 which presumably is the speed that the 30KM range is based on.
The Speed
Before trying the S1, I assumed Kugoo would have added the lowest speed setting as a way of claiming massive range, and it would be too slow to actually be useful or fun. I was surprised to find that even the lowest speed settings were more than fast enough for moving around a smooth surfaced urban environment.
Practicality aside, I was expecting to have to crank up the speed to have fun, and I was wrong. The speedometer measured 17km/h (10mph) maximum for speed setting 1, and if I were trying to conserve battery life, I’d be perfectly happy traveling this fast.
That said, speed settings 2 and 3 topped out at 22 and 28km/h (14 and 17mph), and felt significantly faster. I weigh 80KG, so the claimed top speed of 30km/h is certainly possible.
Just to make sure that the onboard display was accurate I set up a rudimentary speed test to measure distance traveled per elapsed camera frame. I found the speedometer to be accurate.
Personal experiences will of course vary, but I found the top speed of this scooter to be in that sweet spot where fun meets certain injury if something goes wrong.
In other words—if you want speed at a low budget you will not be disappointed. Just don’t come to us if you break a collarbone or two.
The Brakes
My first experience with the left thumb-activated brake was… interesting. Having read up on the Kugoo S1 before starting, I was assuming to find the braking force underwhelming. I found the opposite to be true, and the regenerative magnetic brake took a large chunk off my speed instantly, causing me almost to jump over the front bars.
After adjusting to this, I found it to be relatively easy to judge when to start braking, and as my time with the S1 continued I found that the brake mellowed out somewhat.
While the stopping power of the brake is okay for usage in a controlled environment, the claimed stopping distance of 4 meters seems to only apply to the lowest speed setting.
The rear foot brake also triggers the front brake, and according to the manual is only for emergencies. Anyone coming from a non-electric scooter will find this a strange adjustment.
I’m not entirely convinced that the back brake did trigger the front either. I noticed a marked difference when using the thumb trigger in conjunction with the stomp brake, despite the manual warning me not to, and the combination of both brought the stopping distance down significantly.
I don’t quite understand the omission of a disc brake on the back wheel of the S1. Perhaps it was a price saving measure, or they just thought it wasn’t needed, but I feel it could have added an extra level of stopping power.
Nevertheless, at no point did I feel out of control with the Kugoo S1, though I can imagine those less experienced with scooters falling foul of the odd brake setup. Also, be wary of the potential savage first few hours of brake use!
The Ride
Riding the Kugoo S1 is as smooth as the surface you choose to ride on. As predicted, the lack of air in the tires does make a difference. While it is an advantage on smooth ground and contributes to the feeling of speed, as soon as you move off the smooth ground you are going to feel it!
The front and rear shocks likely contribute to a slightly more comfortable ride, but I found my wrists and feet to be aching after my first day riding. I spent a lot more time on the S1 than most people would on their commute, so this might not be a big deal for some people. If comfort is an issue, you may want to look for something with pneumatic tires.
Portability
When folded, the S1 measures 95 x 34 x 18.5 cm (37 x 13 x 7 Inches) and will fit in any car boot. This is mostly due to the way the bars fold down. The design of these bars is one of the coolest features of the Kugoo S1. Folding them out locks them into place, and two thumb buttons release them.
When unfolded, the handlebars can operate at three heights. I measure 180cm and found the second and third settings to be equally comfortable, though I can imagine taller folks being glad of the highest setting.
Folding the S1 requires a combination of pressing down on the release catch and jerking forward the handlebars. This movement is easier to learn with the front wheel up against a wall, but without following a video on how to fold it I wouldn’t have worked it out.
The catch is so stiff that you will feel like you are doing something wrong, and I was close to breaking out the hammer when I finally worked it out. This makes sense, as you don’t want this thing folding by accident on you at 30 km/h!
The Weight
At 24 pounds, The Kugoo S1 is a little lighter than the Xiaomi M365, but this isn’t enough of a difference to matter. The technology that powers electric scooters is heavy, and there is no easy way to get around it. Premium scooters employ carbon fiber bodies to save weight, but ultimately big battery packs are heavy components.
Depending on the user, the S1 can be carried in one hand, but the weight combined with the center of balance makes it unwieldy at best. If you plan to keep this scooter in the garage and just move it into your car boot, it’s not a problem, but if you need to carry it up a set of stairs every day be prepared for a workout.
The Battery
The stated battery range of 30km will be a big draw for many people. Once again, this figure is highly dependent on the weight of the user, along with the environmental temperature, with colder temperatures resulting in less range. The weather was generally good throughout my testing. The battery drained thoroughly twice during testing. Once at 22km, and once at 15km.
Bear in mind this was using multiple speed settings interchangeably and over many different surfaces. Given its performance over my usage, I have no reason to believe that the 30km isn’t attainable on the lowest speed setting. This battery life should be more than adequate for commuting between a car or train and workplace, or for having fun on a day out.
Everything Else
The S1 has 26 front mounted LEDs as a headlight, and a small red LED backlight. Both work fine for visibility, and the front mounted LEDs are bright enough for some evening use. I wouldn’t want to be going full speed in the dark relying solely on them, but they’re fine otherwise.
The kickstand works, and the scooter can be left standing upright. You really don’t want to forget to put it up before you set off though or you may catapult yourself.
Unfortunately, it is attached to the bottom of the scooter in such a way that the scooter can never lie flat on the floor. Not only this, but the metal kickstand edge when folded will scratch your floor. This was clearly an afterthought to an otherwise well-designed scooter.
The Kugoo S1 has no smartphone app, though its large display up front makes one somewhat unnecessary, and the need for a dedicated app for your scooter is dubious at best anyway.
Should You Buy One?
The Kugoo S1 is a tremendous amount of fun, at times the kind of fun that may land you in an ambulance, though that would be no fault of the scooter! Its only main downfall is the lack of air in the tires and the lack of a rear disc brake, but neither of these things are problematic enough to cause any problems.
Before you purchase, you should check local laws. Riding an electric scooter or Segway on a public road or path is illegal in the UK, which makes this decidedly less useful there.
There are other scooters close to this price that may give a more comfortable ride, but the S1 delivers on the three main things it promises. It has a great range, it’s fast, and it folds down to a small size.

New world news from Time: Your High Quality Caviar Might Just Be Made in China
Perched on eastern China’s Qiandao (“Thousand Island”) Lake are 300 floating steel pens, their waters churning with writhing fish. These are sturgeon, a species native to Russia and Central Asia, much sought after for its roe, which is processed into caviar.
Despite China’s well-deserved notoriety for choking pollution and woeful food safety, the world’s number two economy produces some 35% of all caviar today. And it’s not just a cheap substitute. The Kaluga Queen brand produced on Qiandao Lake—a man-made, 573 square kilometer reservoir about 200 miles southwest of Shanghai—is served in 21 of the 26 Michelin three-starred restaurants in Paris, as well as at superstar French chef Alain Ducasse’s flagship restaurant in Monaco. It was also served to world leaders at the 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou. Even so, the brand’s Chinese origin is conspicuously discreet on packaging—at least for now.
“Consumers are realizing that, even though our caviar is produced in China, it is the best cultivated caviar and can rival wild caviar,” says Xia Yongtao, Kaluga Queen’s deputy general manager. “That is why our product is so in demand.”
Kaluga Queen sells 60 tons of caviar per year, says the firm, making it the largest producer in the world. There are 30,000 sturgeon on Thousand Island Lake, which can grow to 200 kg over the decade it takes to reach sexual maturity. Kaluga Queen also has around 40,000 younger fry in special incubator tanks at its headquarters two hours’ drive away. With caviar starting at $150 for a small tin, and up to 15% of a mature sturgeon’s bodyweight comprised of eggs, a single fish can command a price to rival a Ferrari. They are guarded 24/7 and kept under meticulously controlled conditions.
“Of course, the very best caviar comes from wild Caspian sturgeon,” says Abbas Azari, an Iranian caviar expert with over four decades experience in the industry, who visited Kaluga Queen to inspect the production process for a client, scrutinizing trays of roe with tweezers and a practiced eye. “But Chinese caviar is very good. It has its own special qualities.”
The process of harvesting and salting roe is Iranian in origin—caviar is thought to derive its name from the Persian cahv-jar, or “cake of power”—but it was from the far shore of the Caspian Sea that caviar grew to worldwide renown. In 18th century Imperial Russia, Catherine the Great served it at lavish banquets. After the Bolshevik Revolution, Russia’s exiled aristocrats fanned out across Europe, spreading the delicacy’s popularity as they went, especially in emigre centers like Paris and London.
Following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, tight controls on fishing in the Caspian were lifted, and less than a decade later wild sturgeon was severely depleted. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) classified the fish as endangered in 2000. Soon after, fishing wild sturgeon was banned altogether, which opened the door for commercial farms to flourish.
Kaluga Queen produces several varieties of caviar: there’s the salty, grey-green roe of Siberian Sturgeon; the light green, buttery flavored roe of the Kaluga and Amur Hybrid — the brand’s best-seller and what was served at the G20; and the olive-green Russian Sturgeon variety, a favorite of the French market, which melts into a creamy salinity. But caviar’s apogee is considered to be Beluga, with its larger, almost coal-colored spheres and subtle taste. One small box produced by Kaluga Queen costs $2,100—that works out at 60 cents per glistening egg.

Entry to the factory floor is only permitted after donning white coats, boots, hairnets and rubber gloves, plus a minute-long dunk in sterilizing baths for both hands and feet. Then comes another minute in an “air shower” to remove errant dust or hair. Inside, workers stun live fish by plunging them into ice baths before slicing their pale underbellies open lengthways. Two large deposits of eggs are plucked out and then placed on steel trays. The discarded sturgeon then vanishes along a conveyor belt to be sold as meat, mainly in Russia. A sample of each fish’s eggs is collected and documented; every tin of Kaluga Queen sold has a QR code that contains the specific production and cultivation history of the parent.
“One of the reasons for our success is our relentless pursuit of best quality control,” says Xia. “Our caviar costs 10% more than our Western counterpart, yet demand exceeds supply.”
While 80% of Kaluga Queen products are exported to the E.U., U.S. and Central Asia, there is also a growing demand for it among affluent Chinese. At Beijing’s famed Xing Yongsheng roast duck restaurant, proprietor Wang He has started pairing caviar with his signature dish. “The salty flavor of the caviar compliments the salty skin of the duck perfectly,” he says. “And as duck is from the land, and caviar from the sea, the combination together is fantastic.”
It doesn’t hurt, of course, that many Chinese prize rare and expensive foods, even ascribing health benefits to them. “It’s very good for the brain,” says Xia of his caviar. “I make sure my son eats one tin every month, as well as a tin before every exam.”
For Wang, caviar fits perfectly into a Chinese culinary culture that sets great store on bird’s nest, abalone, and—with increasingly severe environmental consequences—shark’s fin. “Chinese people always want the best stuff,” he says. “If caviar is the best of Western cuisine, they will accept it.”
Getting Western consumers to pay top dollar for fine food that says “Made in China” on it is another challenge entirely. But it’s a challenge that China’s caviar producers look likely to overcome.
