CHAPTER FIVE: [N/A]
PAGES: 161 - 188
TRANSLATION TOOL: Chatgpt
CONTENT / WARNINGS: long post, blood, death mention.
Saya shivered and snapped back to reality. She remembered heading to the porch to escape the noise. She had crouched down with her eyes tightly closed, trying to shut out the flood of memories, and had apparently ended up in the shadow of the bushes. As she came back to herself, a sudden chill hit her.
In the garden facing the canal, there were snow sculptures that appeared to have been crafted by Felix's household. They were illuminated by several lamps, casting multiple layers of blue shadows. The surface of the snow piled on the trees glittered with a fine light, like powdered sugar.
Beyond the canal, the Isaac Cathedral, visible from anywhere in the city, peeked out from between the rooftops of the houses.
Earlier, she hadn't heard the orchestra's music at all, but now it reached her ears with clear definition.
"I have to go back."
Saya remembered leaving in the middle of a conversation and picked up the hem of her dress. She was about to head back to the porch, admiring the large snow statue shaped like a goddess, when she sensed someone's presence on the other side of the statue and instinctively stopped.
(――I don't need to hide.)
She reconsidered and stepped forward.
Then fragments of a conversation between what seemed to be two guests floated into her ears.
"Tonight..."
"The Empress..."
(The Empress?)
Someone was talking about the Empress. It wasn't unusual, but since she had just been talking about her as well, it piqued her interest a bit.
(Huh?)
(What are they talking about――)
As Saya frowned, the area was suddenly enveloped in darkness.
For a moment, she couldn't comprehend what had happened. Just a moment ago, the brightness had been amplified by the snow's reflection, making it even more blindingly bright.
The lights in the garden, house, and even the windows of the other mansions visible from the garden had all gone out. Unluckily, even the moon was now hidden by clouds. In the darkness, Saya's senses dulled, and she slipped.
(...!)
Preparing herself to fall onto the cold snow, Saya closed her eyes.
In the next instant, someone grabbed her wrist.
"Haji――?"
(No, it isn't.)
From the cold feel of the fingers, she realized it wasn't him and tensed up. At that moment, the wind cleared the clouds overhead. The full moonlight that emerged brightly illuminated the long hair of the person who had offered their arm.
(Hair...) that reached down to the waist. Saya was captivated by its shine. (Silver...)
Just like the moon behind him, his gray-blue eyes, piercing even through the mask, were cold and clear. His expressionless, cruel lips. (This person――)
Saya shivered again.
(Scary.)
While she stood frozen, the lights came back on as abruptly as they had gone out. Instantly, the buzz from inside grew louder.
"Another blackout," Someone said.
"But today, it was restored quickly."
"Black...out..." From the murmurs around her, Saya finally understood what had happened and muttered blankly. The lights had been out for just a moment, but it had felt like an eternity.
No, it felt as if time had stopped.
The young man smiled slightly at the still half-dazed Saya.
"...Be careful."
He released Saya's hand and, with his long hair flowing behind him, ascended the stairs leading to the hall, which had already regained its former splendor. At the same time, Haji descended the stairs and draped the cloak he had been holding around Saya's shoulders.
"I was looking everywhere for you. Are you alright, Saya?"
"...It was just a blackout," Saya replied, and Haji gave her a puzzled look.
Realizing he was asking about something else, Saya raised her voice, somewhat deliberately.
"I'm fine, I'm fine! This dress is just a bit tight around the waist."
It felt like the time that had stopped was finally moving again. Saya took a deep breath and said, "That was surprising, how suddenly it went dark."
"Yes. I just heard that the war is dragging on, causing a chronic shortage of fuel for power generation. It seems to be happening frequently lately."
"I see," Saya said, recalling the young man from earlier. Although she couldn't see him well because of the mask, his composed demeanor suggested he was older than Haji and Felix. Despite it being a ball, he wore a pitch-black cassock.
(That person...)
(There are all kinds of people outside the zoo...)
Unconsciously, Saya rubbed the arm where he had grabbed her.
(He was somehow beautiful and scary...)
Seeing Saya fall silent, Haji frowned.
"Did you hit your head?"
"Do I seem that out of it?"
He was still concerned about her odd behavior.
"Well, I did almost fall."
Saya made a deliberate grimace, and Haji looked relieved. He decided not to pry any further.
(Now that I think about it, how did he know my position so well in the darkness?) With that thought in mind, Saya climbed the short steps to the porch and entered the room, where everyone was buzzing, watching the young man from earlier leave.
In particular, Dmitri was angrily confronting Felix.
"What is the meaning of this, why is he here?!"
Felix, spreading his palms, responded while averting his gaze.
"Well, he's the Gray Cardinal that everyone is talking about lately. I just thought it would be interesting to meet him, so I sent an invitation. I never expected him to actually come. Maybe he had an eye on some lady."
"You are...!"
Dmitri, seemingly losing the will to argue further with Felix's usual demeanor, hung his head in defeat. Meanwhile, Felix casually adjusted the collar of his jacket and nonchalantly replied,
"I just can't resist my curiosity."
(The Gray Cardinal—)
Many of the female guests were captivated by his figure as he briskly crossed the wide hall. The Gray Cardinal—Gregory reached the hall's door and, as if it was no longer necessary, nonchalantly removed his mask and dropped it onto the tray held by a nearby boy.
As he brushed back his long hair, his almond-shaped eyes were revealed. The color of his pupils was that grayish blue. Even though his elegant features were now visible, the cold impression he initially gave off did not change.
"Saya, what's up?"
At some point, it seems she had been intently watching. The light-hearted voice calling out to her was unmistakable, even with the mask on. It was Rodion.
Following Saya's line of sight, Rodion spoke.
"Oh, that guy. The Grey Cardinal? What's up with him?"
"I heard he has a lot of influence over the royal family..."
Despite having received his help, for some reason, she felt afraid of him—Saya didn't mention this and instead said,
"I heard there's a princess around my age who’s confined to the palace. Isn’t that strange...?"
Unconsciously, Saya's gaze fell to the luxurious dress she wore. Rodion replied nonchalantly.
"That’s got nothing to do with it. Saya's job is to defeat the Chiropterans. It’s our job to investigate those kinds of things."
After awkwardly putting on his gloves and thinking for a while, he announced.
"Alright, tomorrow morning we’ll have sword practice. When you’re feeling restless, physical activity is the best cure."
When she first arrived, she never imagined Rodion would become this familiar. Saya couldn’t help but smile.
However, the next moment, she realized and composed her expression.
(That’s right. I can’t be distracted by other things.)
Lowering her voice, Saya said,
"It seems it's true that people have been attacked by Chiropterans in the suburbs. I heard it from Sir Felix."
Rodion, now with a serious look, responded with a genuine expression. His usually bright, curious eyes seemed wise.
"Ah, it seems those who were summering out there only heard rumors."
Furrowing his brows as if to confirm his thoughts, Rodion continued.
"But didn’t you encounter them in this city just recently? If they were moving, it took too long, and there weren’t any sightings in the meantime."
"Perhaps they have a collaborator," Haji, who had been standing by, said. Rodion raised his voice in surprise.
"A collaborator? But Chiropterans are violent monsters, right? They don’t have wills, do they? And cooperation?"
Not noticing the slight change in Saya's expression, Rodion continued.
"Well, at best, they could be used. But who and why? I have no idea."
"It’s your job to find that out."
"Yeah, you're right."
Rodion smiled wryly, then suddenly looked up at Haji and furrowed his brow.
"—Are you angry or something?"
"No—"
"I'm thirsty!"
Suddenly, Saya shouted.
"Aren’t you thirsty, Haji and Rodion? I'll go get something to drink!"
"Hey, Saya—"
Ignoring the voice trying to stop her, Saya grabbed the hem of her dress and strode through the hall.
'—A collaborator?'
'A violent monster?'
(Rodion isn’t to blame for anything.)
She knew she was being watched, so she didn’t look down. Surrounded by lady guests, Kiril was watching her.
Saya carried his coat as she stepped into Kiril’s main house room for the first time. She saw sweat beading on his beautiful forehead and asked with concern.
"Are you okay, Kiril?"
"But..."
Although it was already past midnight, they were on their way back from the ballroom when Kiril suddenly felt unwell.
Always composed, seeing him in a weakened state made Saya extremely worried and uneasy, prompting her to stay by his side.
Supported by Eduard, Kiril lay on the bed, breathing heavily but finally starting to feel somewhat better. Saya placed his coat on a chair with his monogram and asked,
"Should I get you some water? Medicine—"
"…You don’t need to fuss over me. You can go back."
His weak arm motioned for her to leave, but Saya found it hard to go. Kiril glanced at her, brushing back his wavy ice-blond hair, revealing his pale neck. He narrowed his amethyst eyes and spoke languidly.
"I’m just a bit tired, and the wine didn’t agree with me. Don’t make a fuss about it; it’s annoying."
Hearing his usual sharp tongue, Saya felt slightly relieved. She thought it was strange, but she now felt more at ease when Kiril was being caustic.
(Eduard is here too—)
"Well, I’ll go back then. Oh, wait."
Saya remembered the necklace she was wearing. She looked down and removed it, feeling its weight again in her hand.
"I’ll return this. Where should I put it?"
"Ah... anywhere is fine."
"No, it’s valuable. I can’t just leave it anywhere."
Saya didn’t really know the value of jewelry, but she recalled how the Duchess at her first champagne party wore a diamond-studded necklace as if to show it off, and how every woman at subsequent events wore elaborate jewelry. Even though they were inside the estate, she couldn’t just leave such an intricately crafted necklace lying around.
Kiril, lying on his back, casually remarked,
"It’s not really that important. Besides, we’re the ones who set the price."
"Eh—"
Saya didn’t immediately understand what Kiril meant. As she stood there puzzled, Kiril signaled Eduard to help him sit up. Leaning back on several pillows arranged on the bed, he clasped his slender fingers over his abdomen and continued wearily.
"It’s not really us, but the foundation of Red Shield. Do you know why diamonds are expensive in the first place?"
"Uh..."
Saya, not understanding why he asked, thought hard and replied hesitantly.
"Because they’re rare?"
That answer didn’t fully satisfy Kiril. He furrowed his brows but patiently asked again.
"Why are they rare?"
"Well... because there aren’t many of them, right?"
Saya thought back to the zoo she grew up in. Joel always arranged for plant hunters worldwide, and he was delighted when he obtained something rare, especially mutations. Things that were scarce were valuable.
Kiril nodded. "Exactly."
Kiril smiled faintly and continued, "It's not that there's a shortage. In fact, there's an abundance."
Saya, puzzled, asked, "What do you mean by setting the price?"
"In this country, which covers about one-fifth of the world's forest area, there are vast reserves of natural resources hidden beneath the ground. Lead, oil, and, of course, diamonds. Yet, we import them from India."
"Why?"
Saya, not understanding what Kiril was trying to convey, asked in confusion. Kiril responded with a mischievous smile.
"Because the foundation—we—are manipulating the information."
He didn't bother to hide the sarcasm in his words.
"No one has realized yet that diamonds can be mined in this country. The aristocrats, you see, are a foolish breed that appreciates the value of goods based on how expensive they are. The quickest way to raise prices is to reduce the supply. We're deliberately keeping the existence of diamond mines in Russia a secret for now, adjusting the supply so that people will pay more for them. Naturally, the foundation's Indian branch controls the mines in India as well."
Kiril paused for a moment and gazed at Saya, his cold expression making him look even more beautiful.
"In other words, we control the price of diamonds circulating in the world. The same goes for gold and coal. As for oil, the foundation has already discovered vast reserves lying beneath the seabed off Petrograd."
"Then why don't you extract it? We even had a blackout today."
Saya recalled the events at the ball earlier that day. Haji had mentioned that there was a shortage of fuel.
"It's said that the prolonged war is causing shortages—wait."
Saya felt a sense of unease, similar to the feeling she got when sensing the presence of the Chiropterans. It was a rough, uncomfortable sensation, like a chill.
Gathering her thoughts, she carefully formed her words.
"I don't understand complicated matters very well, but wouldn't it be better to have fuel if you're fighting a war? The fact that you're deliberately hiding it means—"
"Valery said your intuition isn't bad."
A smile played at the corner of Kiril's lips. Edouard watched him with a calm expression.
"That's right. The foundation doesn't want this country to win. Not yet... We still need other countries to profit first. That's one of our main tasks alongside the search for DIVA."
Saya recalled that Rodion had mentioned their work involved intelligence gathering. At the time, she had been too preoccupied with her own concerns to consider the implications deeply.
Kiril continued, "In parallel with the search for DIVA, we've been gathering information on aristocrats seeking asylum. Of course, we've exchanged it for money and other interests. The foundation's influence extends worldwide, so we don't suffer losses no matter which country wins or loses. It's not just about diamonds; it's no exaggeration to say that the foundation controls the world."
Kiril's breathing became irregular. Despite this, he roughly brushed aside Edouard's outstretched arm.
"The existence of DIVA and what happened at the 'Zoo' are the only blemishes on the foundation. So, while they created DIVA, they're now using you to cover it up. They're leading this country to defeat behind the scenes, while also aiding in asylum efforts. You understand the nature of the foundation, don't you?"
Saya finally felt she understood what this beautiful boy was trying to say.
Kiril, with a cold gaze, continued, "The world is controlled by a handful of powerful individuals. Fools don't realize this."
Kiril grimaced as if his head hurt.
"Kiril, that's enough."
Ignoring Saya's concerned words, Kiril didn't take Edouard's offered arm. Instead, he spoke through ragged breaths.
"You're just another cog in the machine. Even if you defeat DIVA, the Red Shield—no, the foundation—will just breathe a sigh of relief afterward."
"How you’ll be dealt with—who knows what will happen.” He murmured.
Saya lowered her eyelids. Then, she walked over to the chair where she had placed her coat earlier and carefully placed the necklace on top of it.
Kiril's words did not strike her as particularly harsh. In reality, she had never doubted the visible world, even while being manipulated. She had always thought she was loved in that world. The place she could never return to was eternally beautiful.
"I know," she murmured, forcing herself to look up. "Take care, then."
Saya left with a lonely smile, leaving Kiril and Eduardo alone.
"You talked too much. Why did you say such things now?" Eduard said, scolding him.
"Shut up. I'm drunk right now. I can't help it." Kiril turned his pale face away. He wasn't actually drunk.
Knowing this, Eduardo gave a bitter smile and helped him remove his jacket. From his unusually relaxed chest, a thin silver chain peeked out. Eduardo's eyes followed the chain. At the end of it was a ring, the same as the ones worn by the other four. As Eduardo silently stared at it, Kiril, still facing away, murmured.
"...That guy is so earnest, it's annoying."
When they were sent to Russia a few years ago, it was actually Kiril who first suggested they match rings. It was proof that they were comrades who grew up in the same circumstances.
No one explicitly said they didn't want to, and even though they had long outgrown the promise they made as children, they continued to wear the rings without any agreement. Though, Kiril himself had stopped wearing the ring at some point. It happened when they learned the truth about their mission and the reason they were kept alive.
His harsh tone towards people had escalated since then.
While Eduardo was lost in these thoughts, Kiril, who had been looking away, now looked directly at him. His amethyst eyes, unusually uncertain, shimmered as if with a fever.
"We work for the Foundation, and then what?"
It was not uncommon for Kiril to fall ill. He wasn't drunk today either. The countless experiments conducted on their bodies had started to show signs of strain, defying nature. Kiril was aware of this. He was desperately trying to hide it from everyone, but Eduardo alone knew.
Perhaps he told Saya everything out of a creeping fear—fear of death.
Silently, Eduardo tugged on the chain at Kiril's chest and kissed the ring. "Goodnight." He spoke briefly, knowing there was nothing else he could do for him.
"Oh my..."
At the same time, Saya had returned to her room alone.
Tanya's voice made her realize she had been collapsed on the floor in the dark. Tanya turned on the light, and the room suddenly became bright. Saya blinked and said, "Tanya? It's late."
"What are you talking about? If you don't take off your clothes soon, they'll wrinkle. Come on, stand up, stand up."
Tanya seems to think that Saya’s weariness is due to her first masquerade ball.
"Were there any charming gentlemen?"
Opening the door to the adjoining makeup room, Tanya expected Saya to follow, but Saya only managed to lift herself enough to lean against the sofa, staring blankly. Seeing this, Tanya returned with a wry smile on her wrinkled face.
"Well..."
"I sent Haji away because I thought you should change first. Would you prefer to have some tea to relax first?"
Saya's indifferent reply made Tanya exaggerate her tone. "Saya!"
"Huh, what is it?"
Saya finally snapped back to reality and looked up. Tanya, who seemed ready to scold her, saw Saya’s face and crouched in front of the sofa.
"Did something happen?"
Saya was confused by the unexpected gentleness in Tanya's voice. Saya knew she couldn't let the maids suspect anything about the Red Shield. She forced a smile as usual.
"I'm fine! Just a bit tired. I need to change quickly."
"Saya..."
Tanya sighed as she said Saya's name, a slightly lonely smile on her face.
"It's not whether you're okay that I'm asking, is it?"
"Well, I suppose you're telling me not to pry. But you can share what you can. I've worked in many mansions. I have some discretion."
With that, Tanya took Saya's hands in her wrinkled but warm ones. The warmth reminded Saya of Joel, making her feel unsettled.
(I need to be stronger. I can't rely on Haji. I need to find DIVA quickly.)
(It's the only atonement allowed to me...)
Even as she thought this, memories came back to her—of the days spent in the sun with Joel and Haji, days she yearned to return to despite knowing it was wrong.
"It's all my fault," Saya couldn’t hold back and blurted out, overcome by the warmth of Tanya's hands.
"Everyone who gets involved with me ends up unhappy." Maxim said she deserved to be forgiven, but Saya still believed that was wrong.
(He doesn't know. He doesn't know the kind of sins I've committed.)
"I..."
Saya started to speak but stopped, fearing that if she continued, she would start crying. Tanya, who had been silently watching Saya, gently patted her knee through the dress.
"I might not be able to ask what's causing you so much pain, but I can't ignore you saying everyone becomes unhappy. At least for me, having you here makes every day so much more enjoyable."
Tanya continued, "I absolutely love making girls beautiful with my own hands. Sure, regular housemaids do it because it's their job, but thanks to you, Saya, I'm never bored. I'm glad I met you, and I'm glad you came here."
"Now, let me enjoy my work," Tanya said as she stood up and headed back to the makeup room, her round back swaying.
"After all, whether you make others happy or unhappy isn't decided from the start. It's something you choose along the way. Ultimately, everyone makes their own decisions. Mistakes and all."
"What's with that face?"
Tanya stood up, looked back at Saya who couldn't start walking, and frowned deliberately.
Saya didn't know what kind of face she was making. She was just desperately holding back tears. Tanya sighed, raising and lowering her shoulders, then took Saya's hand again.
"It's troubling when you make such an ugly face even though this Tanya is taking care of you. I'll have to prescribe some special lotion for you today."
Jokingly saying this, Tanya pulled Saya into the makeup room. Saya asked:
"Why do you say such things to me?"
Saya couldn't understand why Tanya, whom she had just met, was so kind to her. The animals in the zoo and the other servants, except for Haji, who she occasionally met, were very distant.
Tanya sighed and looked back.
"Why, you ask? There's no reason to treat someone you like well."
Then, after thinking for a moment, she added,
"Well, I guess I just can't leave you alone. I used to have a daughter too."
She used to have a daughter. Saya looked up at the past tense of Tanya's words. When their eyes met, Tanya shrugged.
"I've been fortunate to take care of children at various estates."
"Tanya, you are strong."
Saya couldn't help but say. Tanya smiled a bit sadly.
"Well, who knows. But as I said, happiness and unhappiness are not anyone's fault; they are actually choices we make ourselves. I always choose the happier path. It's something anyone can do."
Saying this casually, Tanya left Saya and entered the makeup room. The sound of filling the washbasin with hot water could be heard from the adjoining washroom. Her voice, sounding particularly joking, echoed.
"Now, hurry up and do something about that sour face."
As Eduardo stepped out into the hallway from Kirill's room, the moonlight cast shadows of large windows onto the velvet-covered floor. The clouds were moving fast tonight, and the moon kept appearing and disappearing. Maxim stood by the window. This hallway only faced the courtyard, so there wasn't much of a view. On the other side was the wing where Saya and others were staying.
When Eduardo tried to pass silently behind him, he heard the sound of Maxim closing his pocket watch. A voice followed that sound.
"Don't spoil someone too much. We have to go wherever the nature of our work takes us."
"No,"
Eduardo stopped. Maxim continued to look out the window.
"If you get too attached to someone, it will cause trouble later."
Maxim said. It was indeed a face of a Red Shield member that he rarely showed to Saya and the others. However, he had never removed the ring from his finger. Perhaps he had simply forgotten the original circumstances and kept it on.
"Because you were once like that too, right?" Eduardo asked.
The fickle clouds hid the moon. Eduardo saw a flicker of agitation in Maxim's face reflected in the window glass.
But it was only for a moment, and he quickly returned to the gentle face of a colleague. Valeri had come running towards them, having spotted Maxim.
Eduardo bowed silently and left the scene.
"Eduardo? I'm sorry, was I interrupting something?"
"It's over now. What about you?"
Valeri, who was asked again, stammered. He didn't have any particular reason.
Valeri stammered, "It's just that, with all the recent turmoil, we haven't had much chance to talk..."
"Oh, I'm sorry for all the trouble. Aren't you having a hard time with Rodion?"
When Maxim apologized, Valeri hurriedly shook his head, not wanting him to think sh was struggling with anything.
"That's not it. It's just..." Valeri hesitated, worried that Maxim might dislike her for saying this, but she decided to speak up. "Kiril mentioned you've been acting alone a lot lately."
Even as he spoke, Valeri knew that this was her own frustration and anxiety. Since Saya arrived, he felt something was off. Even before that, Maxim had been increasingly busy, and although they lived in the same estate, they were crossing paths less often. It wasn't unusual for him to be away from the estate for days at a time due to work.
Despite nothing significantly changing, Valeri couldn't shake off his unease.
"Are you worried I'm plotting something nefarious?" Maxim said with a laugh. Valeri looked up sharply.
"No, that's not—!"
"When you get so defensive, it seems like you don't trust me," Maxim said.
"No, it's not that—" Valeri was flustered, unable to explain the anxiety weighing on his heart. Would he laugh at him for being too worried or weak?
Suddenly, Maxim reached out and deftly took Valeri's glasses. "Ah!" Valeri gasped, even more flustered. Maxim placed his hand on his chin, turning her to face him directly, and looked straight into his eyes.
"Whatever you're worried about, there's nothing to worry about. Nothing at all."
Valeri snatched back his glasses and put them on, feeling like a child being treated that way. Maxim was indeed older, but it hurt not to be treated as an equal. This distance was likely why his vague anxieties wouldn't go away. Even though they were comrades, he couldn't understand what Maxim was thinking lately.
After thinking for a while, Valeri silently extended his hand to Maxim, showing the ring on her finger. His voice was hoarse with determination as he asked, "Is it true?"
"It's true." Maxim replied.

Studies on Alzheimer Disease - Metformin Connection - A Brief Review | Chapter 02 | Emerging Trends and Research in Biological Science Vol. 1
Metformin is the widely prescribed first line oral antidiabetic drug used in diabetes mellatus, type 2. The global sales turnover of metformin runs into millions of dollars. The Increased risk of metformin (Met) users for developing Alzheimer disease (AD) is reported first in a study conducted in 2011. Since then, the subject has attracted the attention  of the researchers as well as the pharmaceutical industry, resulting in a number of studies, both clinical as well as experiments on animals. Confusing results poured in, ranging from confirmation of the risk of AD to protection against developing AD, making the scenario, all the more intriguing. Added to the confusion, is the diversity of various studies as well as the parameters interpreting their results. Of the many clinical trials, some are retrospective cohort studies (Tseng Chin-Hsiao [1]), case control studies (Imfeld P, et al. [2]) Randomised studies (Hsu CC, et al. [3]), double blind, cross over pilot studies. (Aaron Koenig et al. [4]) and some longitudinal studies (Ng TP, et al. [5]), besides studies doing meta analysis. Of these studies most of the trials estimate the risk of development of dementia with metformin alone (Tseng Chin-Hsiao [1]) or in comparison with other OHAs (Hsu et al. [3], Cheng et al. [6]). The other studies studied the effect of metformin on the cognition (Moor EM, et al. [7]). These trials have different out come measures, (like Hazard ratio, (HR) Odds (OR) ratio, relative risk (RR) etc.) which don’t mean one and the same. So the multiplicity of the types of studies and different out- comes with different conclusions will be surely baffling to an average reader who tries to take cognisance of the involved issues. The article attempts to take stock of the overall developments in this regard. The author adopted a reader friendly approach which is discussed in the article, at the outset. Finally, it is reiterated that future prospective studies only can resolve the conflict of opinion on the nexus between metformin and Alzheimer’s disease.

The global automotive sector might face some hurdles in the following couple of years, with OEMs trying to keep with the rapid worldwide electrification of the industry. China witnessing its first decline in vehicle sales in two decades, the US automotive market growing considerably, and the probability of BREXIT and the USMCA deal might potentially disrupt the global market, although the market is expected to be re-established by the year 2026.
The automotive industry is classified on the basis of the following regions:
North America (USA, Canada and Mexico)
Europe (Germany, France, UK, Russia and Italy
Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia)
South America (Brazil, Argentina, Columbia etc.)
Middle East and Africa (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa)
As observed in the past few years, trends like declining demand for sedans increasing alternative fuel powertrain, specifically in the form of battery-powered vehicles, and other value added services will continue to control the automotive industry. The following years will see companies gradually shifting towards manufacturing more hybrid and fully-electric vehicles. The emergence of electric vehicles will give rise to the need for easily accessible charging stations, and it might be challenging to build the required number of stations especially in regions due to lack of resources or insufficient infrastructure.

RUSSIAN ROSE | VOLUME ONE | PART 9
EPILOGUE: [N/A]
PAGES: 216 - 218
TRANSLATION TOOL: Chatgpt
CONTENT / WARNINGS: long post, blood, death mention.
This book is part of the Romanov arc of "BLOOD+," which airs nationwide on the MBS and TBS network every Saturday evening at six (commonly known as "Doroku"!). It is a story from the past of the anime's main character, Saya, and her knight, Hagi, set during their few days in the splendid, somewhat decadent Saint Petersburg, Russia.
I can hardly believe I had the chance to write such a story... With some hesitation, I experienced many precious moments different from working alone, like the production announcement event and the first episode screening. Somehow, I managed to reach the epilogue of the first volume.
Oh, yes. There was something surprising at that screening.
The opening song's promotional video featured a huge underground channel in Tokyo used as a backdrop for Saya.
Actually, I had participated in a tour of that underground channel. (I'm a fan of underground channels.)
Seeing Saya from the anime and Hitomi Takahashi, who sings the theme song, moving in a place I had just recently visited was a strange and incredible coincidence.
Isn't that an amazing coincidence? And that underground channel was incredibly hot. Wow, but Ms. Takahashi is wearing winter clothes... Seeing such a delicate, cute person working hard made me realize that adults must work even harder. Am I working hard enough...?
In the Romanov arc, I just wanted to write about happy moments for Saya and Hagi, with that in mind. They go through a lot because of their destiny, but... there's still a second volume... but anyway! I hope I can depict the bond between them and showcase Saya's charm and strength.
I know I will still cause trouble for many people, but I want to thank those who helped me reach this point. Director Fujisaku and Mr. Omatsu, who took time out of their busy schedules. (I didn't even know what to ask, and in the end, I did whatever I wanted with just the words "Hagi is good at housework" and "He talks more and is a bit gentler during this time" in mind...)
To everyone at Production IG and Aniplex, and illustrator Ryo Takagi, and my editor N, who I troubled more than usual. And of course, to the readers who picked up this book. I hope I didn't detract too much from the image of the anime...
Thank you very much. I hope to see you again in the second volume.

RUSSIAN ROSE | VOLUME ONE | PART 8
CHAPTER FIVE: [N/A]
PAGES: 189 - 215
TRANSLATION TOOL: Chatgpt
CONTENT / WARNINGS: long post, blood, death mention.
Despite his words, Maxim does not take Valeri's hand. Feeling uneasy, Valeri looks up at him, only to see him gazing out the window. Following his gaze, Valeri sees multiple shadows on the mansion's roof, which momentarily appear like statues mounted on the roof of the Hermitage. As the wind clears the clouds, the grotesque forms are revealed.
"Chiropterans!"
Saya, who was heading to the makeup room in response to Tanya's call, senses something unpleasant and looks up. At almost the same moment, glass shards, shattered along with the window frame, crash into the room with a loud noise.
"They're here!"
Saya quickly covers her eyes and leaps back. Haji, having rushed over at the sound, retrieves a sword from his cello case. Saya catches the sword tossed to her and draws it, facing the chiropterans.
"What on earth is going on?"
Tanya gasps as she peeks out from the makeup room. Without looking at her, Saya sharply commands, "Stay back!"
Saya steadies her gaze on the blade and lets her palm glide along it, cutting herself. Her red blood flows down the grooves etched into the blade, reaching its tip. The wind blows the curtains upward. Today, one of the chiropteran's arms remains in human form. Saya furrows her brows.
"But—"
She knows she must not be deceived by appearances. She crushes glass shards underfoot and leaps forward.
Saya swings her sword down, aiming to cleave the creature from its skull—but instead, her body is violently blown to the side.
(Eh?)
Her body crashes into a mirror mounted above the fireplace, creating spiderweb cracks. Rebounding, her body hits the floor hard.
"Saya!"
"It's fine—"
"Haji!"
Saya stands up, clutching her injured arm. She sees another chiropteran hanging by one arm from the outer wall of the window, swaying as if enjoying itself.
(Was it knocked away by that one?)
Blood trickles down from her forehead as she glares. Beside her, Haji throws a knife. The chiropteran, its arm impaled, crashes onto the balcony floor. Meanwhile, the other chiropteran lunges at Haji.
It seems to spread its arms wide and swing its thick claws down, but Haji swiftly ducks, his long hair fluttering. He then sharply slashes the chiropteran's mutated, lump-like leg with his knife.
Emitting a bizarre cry, the chiropteran collapses. Haji slips past it, quickly regains his stance, and throws another knife without hesitation. The knife pierces the forehead of the chiropteran that was attempting to rise on the balcony.
"Hurry up and finish it off!"
Haji shouted while blocking the beast's recklessly swinging claws with another knife he had pulled out.
"Got it!"
Saya responded and looked for her sword. The sword she had let go of due to the earlier shock was lying on the other side of the beast that Haji had slashed at the leg. Saya calculated the distance and prepared to leap, as the beast was about to stand up.
(Can I make it in time?)
Just as she dashed forward, taking a gamble, the beast roared.
(I won't make it--)
Suddenly, the beast stumbled and fell again.
"What--"
Turning around, she saw Kiril standing at the open doorway. Behind him was Eduardo. Both of them had aimed at the beast's injured leg and pulled the trigger. They were holding pistols.
Saya looked up at Kiril, who was wiping off the beast's body fluids with a look of disgust, and said,
"Kiril? Aren't you feeling unwell?"
"Oh, come on."
Despite the situation, Kiril sighed in exasperation, brushing his disheveled hair with his fingertips.
"Do you think I could sleep through such a commotion? Anyway, let's get out of here. Only you can deal a fatal blow, right?"
While the beast was struggling, Eduardo picked up the sword.
"Thank you."
Saya reached out to take it. At that moment, the struggling beast suddenly spread its wings.
"Oh no!"
The beast took off and attacked Saya from above, catching her off guard and making her momentarily forget to draw her sword. Its sharp claws pierced her exposed shoulder, throwing her aside.
Saya was slammed onto the full set, and the beast covered her. She wildly swung her sword, then kicked its belly hard, taking advantage of a brief opening to roll away.
"Saya--"
Kiril tried to call out to her but swallowed his words. He noticed the murderous aura emanating from Saya, who was already standing up.
Saya's shoulder was horribly gouged, exposing the flesh beneath. Despite that, she stood up straight. She shook her head to clear the blood-soaked bangs from her forehead, and Kiril unconsciously held his breath.
(…This is different.)
The girl standing there was the one he had just saved moments ago. Before that, she had seemed hurt by his words. Even though he had heard she was a "weapon," he had thought she wasn't much of a threat after seeing her return injured the other day.
But now, she exuded no such vulnerability. Her eyes, fixed on the beast, even seemed to shimmer with a hint of ecstasy, causing an inexplicable stir in Kiril's chest, almost to the point of pain.
Her slightly parted, full lips looked strangely alluring, as if feverish. Saya's eyes burned red as she kicked off the floor. Even her movements were different from before.
Something had awakened within her—Kiril felt so. No, perhaps this was her true form.
"Haaaaaa!"
Saya swung her blade diagonally from above, but the winged creature leaped back to avoid it. Without a moment's delay, Saya swung her sword back upward. The blade grazed the creature's body, scattering its fluids, but it didn't deliver a fatal blow.
Clicking her tongue in frustration, Saya noticed that Kirill and Eduard were no longer visible. With a look of fierce determination, she relentlessly pursued the winged creature.
As it dodged Saya's sword, the creature spread its wings in a brief moment of opportunity. Despite the remnants of the window frame that barely clung to its body, it charged toward the balcony.
Haji, who was grappling with another winged creature on the balcony, got distracted for a moment, allowing the creature's claws to dig into his shoulder.
Entangled, Haji and the creature fell, while another creature flew off into the night.
Saya rushed to the balcony and looked down. Haji, who had struggled while falling, had landed safely. Looking closer, she saw that Maxim, Rodion, and Valeri had rushed over.
"We'll manage to keep things under control here, so you and Haji..."
Rodion started to say, but like Kirill, he gasped.
Without needing any instructions, Saya and Haji were already chasing after the fleeing creature, Saya standing firmly on the balcony railing, her gaze fixed on the night sky.
Saya, in her blood-stained pure white dress, looked fierce and unbothered by her appearance.
Without hesitation, Saya wiped the blood from her cheek with the back of her gloved hand.
Her sharp, bewitching red eyes reflected the moonlight.
"Somehow..."
Next to her, similarly captivated, Valeri murmured quietly.
"...Beautiful, and terrifying."
Saya, still staring at the sky, called out shortly.
"Haji!"
Nodding lightly, Haji leaped. Effortlessly jumping onto the balcony, he lifted Saya. With a second jump, they were already on the roof.
Though clouds covered the moon, they moved swiftly, and occasionally the moonlight revealed the flapping winged creature.
"Let's chase, Haji."
"Yes."
Aware of her transformation, Haji only nodded.
"Let's go."
"Yes, Saya."
No matter what, he would follow her. That is the duty of a chevalier.
As Saya was about to start running, she frowned and forcefully tore the hem of her dress, still worn. Tanya had carefully chosen this dress, and though she had been very embarrassed, it had suited Saya extremely well. Now, Saya tore it without hesitation.
She ripped the skirt to make it easier to move and fixed her gaze on the dark sky.
The heavy atmosphere of midnight Petrograd loomed. The rooftops of the lined houses resembled silent, dark waves in a sea. While keeping track of their position by the golden dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral, visible from anywhere in the city, the two chased the winged creature across the rooftops.
Except for the occasional trembling of the air, possibly due to stray dogs or the wind blowing from the dark sea, the night was oppressively silent.
Saya strained her eyes in the darkness. She had been barely able to follow the winged creature by the intermittent moonlight through the clouds, but it seemed she had finally lost sight of it.
Haji, who had stopped and was looking back at Saya, received a silent shake of the head from her.
"This area is residential... if it landed here, that’s bad."
As she bit her lip at her own words, claws extended from the darkness behind her.
"Saya!"
Feeling as if she was about to be knocked down by the winged creature that suddenly emerged from the darkness, Saya's body was thrown into the air.
After a strange sensation of floating, she started falling rapidly. Saya's body crashed onto the wooden roof of a tavern.
The winged creature broke through the floors from the second story to the ground floor of the tavern, which sometimes rented rooms to prostitutes. Inside, several drunken patrons were unable to speak. A woman in a dress that emphasized her cleavage looked down in speechless shock from a hole in the floor.
Saya roughly wiped the blood dripping from her injured forehead.
(Fighting here isn’t good)
Saya stood up and threw herself through the window, rolling out into the street. The area was a shabby downtown, with similar dilapidated shops and boarding house-style buildings tightly packed together. Lights began to flicker on in one window after another.
Saya leaped into the darker part of the alley.
Saya kept running until she finally cornered the winged creature at the end of a deserted alley. Catching her breath, she held her sword in front of her. In contrast, the winged creature showed no signs of fatigue, which made her even more frustrated.
(…I must defeat it!)
The thought floated in her mind like a mantra.
(…I must defeat it!)
"Ha—!"
Saya widened her eyes, gripped the hilt tightly, and struck. The winged creature quickly leaped, switching places with Saya. It pinned her small body against the wall, choking her.
"Ugh—"
Her breath was cut off. Its claws dug into her skin, tearing it, and her white fur-covered chest became even more stained with red. "Saya!"
With eyes narrowed in pain, she barely caught sight of Haji. He held his knife, seeming to hesitate.
"H... Haji...?"
They needed to restrain its movements quickly before people arrived.
"What... are you... doing, Haji..."
Begging in agony, Saya saw Haji shake his head once, finally raising his knife before his eyes. The winged creature tightened its grip on Saya's slender neck.
As if intoxicated by the violence, the winged creature roared loudly.
Just as it gleefully squeezed tighter, bullets rained down from high above, aiming for its gaping mouth.
The winged creature, distracted by its pain, flung Saya's body aside.
As she was thrown onto the cold street and looked up, she saw Maxim standing atop the high wall where she had been pinned moments ago.
His body gracefully leapt through the air.
Maxim landed with a spin, effortlessly regaining his stance with just a bend of his knees, and without changing his expression, he fired more bullets into the writhing winged creature.
It was all over in a flash.
"You got pretty roughed up. Are you okay?"
Saya was lying dazed on the ground when someone offered her a hand.
"Rojion..."
When Saya finally came to her senses and called his name, he had an awkward look on his face.
"Sorry, I let the other one get away. Those guys just don't die at all." He said, frustrated.
"Huh—"
I raised my voice involuntarily and looked around. My expression was completely different from the one I had just worn. Noticing this, Rojion said,
"Don't make that face. I left the other three for post-processing. No one's hurt. The maid is safe too."
"Maid?" Saya looked down at her own tattered appearance. She must have been seen wielding the sword, bloodied. What did she think of fighting against the chiropterans?
"Saya." Haji picked up the sword and ran over. Saya tried to push the image of Diva out of her mind.
"I'm sorry. But right now, it's more important to—"
"I know—"
Saya, with the help of Haji and Rojion, began to stand up when that unpleasant voice rang in her ears again.
"Saya?"
The two of them looked puzzled as they peered into Saya's line of sight. There, the chiropteran that Maxim had supposedly beaten so badly it could no longer stand was trembling and spreading its wings.
She grabbed her sword, but it was too late. The chiropteran lifted off into the night sky, kicking up a gust of wind.
All Maxim could do was watch, his bullets spent. He turned around and said, "Sorry, I let it get away again."
Saya lowered her eyes and shook her head. It wasn't something Maxim should apologize for, and she could still hear that voice in her ears.
"We can still chase it. Let's go, Haji."
Haji nodded, determined. "Right."
Rojion raised his voice in astonishment as they stood up.
"Hey, are you serious? You're all beat up. Let's go back and come up with a plan for today—" His gaze fixed on Saya, and he trailed off. "Earlier, you were all..."
Saya could only watch with a faint smile as confusion spread across his face.
The wound on her shoulder, which had been severely gouged, was already nearly closed.
Even with the knowledge, seeing it unfold before his eyes must have been surprising. What kind of face was Maxim making? Saya couldn't look at him.
"...On the way here, I kept thinking," Rojion said, uncharacteristically hesitantly.
"There have been sightings before. But there was no movement. And then suddenly that mansion is attacked by chiropterans. Maybe they came targeting you, Saya."
Lifting his face with determination, his large eyes reminded Saya of the woman in the tavern earlier, who had been filled with astonishment.
"Something about you seems different from earlier," Rojion recalled Saya standing tall in the darkness. When Valeri spoke first, he barely managed to hold back, but he had certainly felt it too.
Beautiful and terrifying.
Rojion finally spoke. "Saya—what are you?"
Saya had no answer for that question.
"Let's go."
Without another word, Saya turned her back on Rojion, and walked away with Haji by her side.
(The idea that I might be able to make someone happy was very enjoyable. Back then.)
(I wanted to share many happy stories. I wanted the girl behind the door to be happy.)
*******
When the conversation turned to Joel's birthday party and she showed interest, Saya was delighted. Joel's birthday party was an annual event where a band was invited from outside, and the families of the servants would come. It was a fun event for Saya.
"That's right, so why don't we do this? Let's surprise Joel together and greet him on his birthday," Saya suggested to the girl behind the door. As usual, she pressed her forehead and palm against it.
"Together...?"
"It's a celebration, so it's good to have lots of people. No one will say no."
"But I've... never been outside..."
Hearing the anxious tone, Saya responded confidently, "It's okay!"
In fact, this wasn't the first time Saya had thought about getting her out. The more times she visited the tower, the more naturally this feeling arose in Saya's heart. Talking to her through the door, listening to her singing—it felt so fun and nostalgic. Saya thought how wonderful it would be if they could talk directly, holding hands.
Saya also figured out that a servant she rarely saw seemed to be in charge of the tower.
After having a long conversation with Diva, Saya hid in the shadows and observed the comings and goings of the people in the tower. For Saya, it was an extension of a fun game.
"I have a pretty good idea where the key is kept. On the day of the party, everyone will be busy with preparations, so I think I can bring it to you. I'll find a chance."
When Saya said this, she was definitely having fun. She felt as if she was going to do something amazing without telling Joel or Haji.
Saya couldn't contain her excitement and said with a smile, "When you go outside, it will surely be fun!"
"Yes..."
Diva said, "I'm really looking forward to it."
*******
"Saya, over there!"
Urged by Haji's shout, Saya strained her eyes in the darkness. Illuminated by the whimsically appearing moon between the clouds, she saw the top of a church tower.
That tower—Christ the Savior Cathedral—was modeled after St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, surrounded by several chapels. It was also known as the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, built on the site where a grand duke was once assassinated.
The red clay-colored tower was adorned with mosaics, each topped with domes shaped like onions, painted in vibrant colors. These towers stood out strikingly amidst the linear surrounding buildings.
One of these unusual towers had a chiropteran clinging to it. Severely injured, it seemed unable to fly away in one go.
Haji held Saya and leaped. They landed on a higher tower, positioning themselves to look down on the chiropteran from behind.
Despite being disoriented, the chiropteran seemed to be heading somewhere.
Saya whispered, "Let's follow it. There might be a direct connection to Diva."
"Saya?"
Even though her wounds would heal quickly, Saya had lost a lot of blood. Haji hesitated at the thought of pursuing the chiropteran, unsure of how far they could go. Noticing his silence, Saya looked up at the young man beside her.
"As a chevalier, I shouldn't have any objections to your orders but..."
"What? When will we get another chance like this—look!"
Just as Saya was about to press him for answers, she heard that sound again. The chiropteran, which had also raised its head, seemed to be listening. It spread its wounded wings as if gaining strength from the sound.
Saya and Haji quickly ducked their heads as the chiropteran turned and spotted them, letting out a sharp cry. The darkness was pierced by its scream.
"There's no choice!"
"Saya!"
Ignoring Haji's attempt to stop her, Saya leapt forward. Her blade grazed the chiropteran's body just as it was about to take flight, embedding itself into the dome. As wooden splinters flew, she pulled her sword out with force, preparing for the next attack.
At that moment...
"Hey, look at that!"
"Saya!"
Voices called out from across the river. There seemed to be a tavern open until morning on the other side. Distracted, Haji stepped in between Saya and the chiropteran, deflecting its attack with his knives.
"Saya, we need to retreat. We can't let more people see us."
Just as Haji said, people were starting to gather on the opposite bank.
"There's something there—"
"In a place like that?"
"Haji!"
The moon continued to reveal itself only intermittently, preventing the onlookers from getting a full view. This, however, only made them more curious and reluctant to leave.
As Saya realized they had no choice but to retreat, the chiropteran flew out from the damaged dome. Saya, about to let it go, suddenly dashed forward, slipping past Haji. The chiropteran's claws were aimed at them as it took flight.
"Saya!"
Her sword couldn't fully absorb the impact, and she was knocked away. Bloodied, Saya's body was thrown into the darkness. Haji, ignoring the danger of being overheard, shouted her name. The chiropteran flew away, and Saya's figure was briefly exposed to the onlookers before she fell into the cold canal behind them.
With a loud splash, the people were momentarily stunned before cries of curiosity erupted.
"Something fell in!"
"What do you mean, something—that's a monster! I saw it!"
"Yeah, I saw it too—a monster! There's a monster in the Church Savior on the Spilled Blood!"
Of course, the drunkards couldn't have seen anything clearly. But their shouted words reached even the faintly conscious Saya, whose body was rapidly losing heat in the cold water.
A monster.
In her fading consciousness, Saya heard a mocking voice as she desperately tried to deny it.
(No, I'm not a monster. I'm not a mon—)
(Am I?)
"Sister."
On that day — the day of Joel's birthday party, Saya unlocked the tower.
The girl inside, who didn't immediately come out of the dark, sunless room, promised to meet later, and Saya went to pick flowers with Hagi.
Driven by the desire to offer something to Joel from herself, who had nothing.
And then — when Saya returned late, she saw it.
The girl's smile as she slowly turned around in Joel's pool of blood.
She — DIVA — smiled with a face identical to Saya's, blood dripping from her mouth.
"Sister?"
Rubbing his eyes in the dark, it was Alexei who spoke. With his still foggy mind, he tried hard to recall. (Yesterday, I fell ill again — Mother wasn't around — and sister stayed with me the whole time.)
He was the crown prince of this country.
- After Lord Gregory came to visit,
The family was close, but especially his elder sister Anastasia doted on Alexei.
"Were you there the whole time?"
Alexei asked his sister, who was by his pillow.
"Yes — but I fell asleep until now."
Anastasia, known for being the most mischievous among the sisters, shrugged her slender shoulders playfully, true to her reputation. I see, thought Alexei.
— I just woke up and looked outside the window. I was surprised at how late it had gotten.
When he woke up, the moonlight illuminated her cheek, making her look somewhat doll-like. Her profile was slightly beautiful and frightening.
Alexei decided to keep his thoughts to himself and glanced around to see how his favorite dog, a gift from Gregory a few days ago when he was ill, was doing.
Although he received many get-well gifts, he felt Gregory understood him best.
Until meeting him, his mother, the Empress, and his nannies had never given him any animals, fearing something might happen.
The dog, prepared by Anastasia upon the nanny's instruction, was curled up sleeping in a fur-lined basket. Knowing it was prone to cold, Alexei smiled a little.
Among the several dogs he received, his favorite one had no hair except on its head and tail.
"Sister, please go back to your room. I think I've recovered now."
Alexei said. From the nannies' gossip, he knew his sisters were referred to as "princesses locked in the tower." He felt that the Empress's dislike of grand events was partly due to him, and he didn't want to trouble them too much with his needs.
In the moonlight, Anastasia seemed to smile.
"Alexei, you're a good boy. Then I'll sing a song for you. Until you fall asleep again."
"Your song, sister? I wonder if I can sleep."
Anastasia made a face, and Alexei shrugged. This kind of exchange was usual for them.
Anastasia began to sing.
And in the tune of "Au Clair de la Lune," The Princess' voice was profoundly soothing.
"A French song?"
The children had been familiar with German songs from the Empress's homeland, Russian songs sung by the cheerful Russian nannies hired from the countryside, and French songs taught by their French tutor since they were little.
"Next to you, my beloved. There are words I want to tell you under the moonlight. Open the door. With a voice like the wings given by God. Listen to the song."
Anastasia smiled brightly. "Yes!"
As Alexei let himself be enveloped by the clear voice, he was soon overtaken by drowsiness.
"My beloved. There are words I want to tell you under the moonlight. At the door of promise. In the darkness given by God, I am singing alone ――Who is knocking at the door under the moonlight?"
Before long, he drifted into slumber and Anastasia continued to sing.
Anastasia sang softly, gently stroking his forehead as she whispered. "Let's get you another wonderful toy, Alexei."

Below are the summarized pages for the first half of chapter five of the first Russian Rose volume. It consists of 26 pages.
PAGES: 161,162,163
Saya, feeling overwhelmed by the noise and a rush of memories, seeks refuge on the porch. She crouches down in the shadow of some bushes and, upon regaining her senses, feels a sudden chill. In the garden facing the canal, snow sculptures made by Felix's household are illuminated by several lamps, casting blue shadows. The Isaac Cathedral is visible in the distance. As Saya remembers she must return to her conversation, she notices the clear sound of the orchestra's music, which she hadn't heard before. She picks up the hem of her dress and heads back to the porch, admiring a large snow statue shaped like a goddess. Suddenly, she senses someone's presence and stops. Reconsidering, she steps forward and overhears fragments of a conversation about the Empress. Curious, she frowns, and at that moment, everything plunges into darkness. The lights in the garden, house, and surrounding windows all go out, and even the moon is hidden by clouds. In the dark, Saya slips and prepares to fall onto the cold snow. Before she hits the ground, someone grabs her wrist. At first, she thinks it might be Haji, but the cold fingers tell her otherwise. Tensing up, she looks up to see the full moon illuminating the long hair of her rescuer. The person's long, silvery hair and piercing gray-blue eyes, visible even through a mask, captivate her and fill her with fear. Just as suddenly as the lights went out, they come back on, and the indoor chatter resumes loudly.
PAGES: 164,165,166
There's a brief power outage at a ball, causing some initial confusion. Saya is initially shocked and feels like time has stopped. A young man, who had been holding her hand, smiles at her and then leaves, ascending the stairs to rejoin the lively hall. Haji, coming down the stairs, finds Saya and gives her a cape, concerned about her well-being. Saya reassures him, though she is still somewhat unsettled. As the lights come back on, Saya and Haji discuss the frequent power outages caused by the ongoing war and fuel shortages. Saya reflects on the mysterious young man in the black cassock, feeling both captivated and frightened by him. Haji is still worried about her, but Saya reassures him by making light of the situation. Entering the hall, they find a commotion centered around the young man, identified as the "Grey Cardinal." Dmitri is angrily questioning Felix about inviting such a notable figure. Felix admits his curiosity and his surprise at the Cardinal's attendance. The situation concludes with the Grey Cardinal, Grigori, leaving the hall, attracting the attention of many women as he dramatically removes his mask.
PAGES: 168,169,170
Saya watches as Grigori, the Grey Cardinal, reveals his sharp eyes and cold demeanor, which remain unchanged despite his handsome features. Rodion, noticing Saya's focus, asks her if something is wrong. Saya explains that she has heard Gregory has significant influence over the royal family, which makes her uneasy despite his earlier help. She also mentions a young princess around her age who is confined to her palace, finding the situation odd. Rodion dismisses her concerns, reminding her that her job is to fight the Chiropterans, while gathering information is their job. He suggests that physical training, like practicing with her sword, can help clear her mind. Saya smiles at Rodion's support but quickly refocuses on their main task. She quietly informs Rodion that there have been confirmed Chiropteran attacks in the suburbs, based on information she got from Felix. Rodion becomes serious and notes that although there were rumors, the Chiropterans only appeared recently in the city, suggesting they took a long time to move with no sightings in between. Haji speculates that the Chiropterans might have had help from someone. Rodion reacts with surprise and skepticism, questioning how a violent monster could have a collaborator. Saya interrupts the conversation by suddenly announcing her thirst and heads off to get drinks, leaving Rodion and Haji behind. She is determined to stay focused and not show her distress, aware that Kiril is watching her from a distance.
PAGES: 171,172,173
Saya enters Kyril's room for the first time, worried about him as he seems unwell. Kyril, who had collapsed on their way back from a ball, is now lying on the bed, exhausted and complaining about the wine he drank. Despite his usual sarcastic remarks, Saya feels relieved seeing him act normally. Saya offers to get water or medicine for Kyril, but he dismisses her concern, telling her to leave. She hesitates, noticing his weakened state, but eventually remembers the necklace she’s wearing and offers to return it. Kyril downplays its value, explaining that the high value of diamonds is decided by their organization, the Red Shield Foundation. Their conversation shifts to why diamonds are considered valuable. Kyril questions Saya, leading her to realize that rarity is what makes them precious. Despite Kyril’s seemingly indifferent attitude, his explanation hints at the deeper control and influence their organization has over such values.
PAGES: 174,175,176
Kyril explains to Saya the immense power and influence of their foundation. He reveals that despite Russia having abundant natural resources, including diamonds, the foundation controls their distribution to keep prices high. They manipulate information so that people remain unaware of local diamond deposits, thus importing them from India, where the foundation also has control. Kyril elaborates on how the foundation benefits from controlling resource supply and demand, including diamonds, gold, and oil. This manipulation ensures that prices remain high and benefits the elite who value expensive items. He cynically notes that the foundation has a significant influence over global markets and politics, ensuring they profit regardless of which country wins or loses a conflict. Saya, confused and disturbed, questions why they don't exploit local resources, especially given the recent power shortages. Kyril explains that the foundation doesn't want Russia to win the war yet, as their goal is to profit from other countries first. He hints at a broader strategy where the foundation supports both sides to maintain control and ensure their dominance. Kyril's cold and revealing words make Saya realize the foundation's true nature and their use of power to manipulate global events. He further explains that their current mission, the search for DIVA, is just one part of their operations, which include intelligence gathering and assisting aristocrats in their escape, ensuring the foundation's influence remains unchallenged. Kyril's speech reveals the cynical and manipulative nature of the foundation, which controls global events and resources to maintain their power. Kyril ends by reminding Saya that even if they defeat DIVA, it would only benefit the foundation, showing her the harsh reality of their world and her role in it. This realization leaves Saya with a deeper understanding of the foundation's manipulative power and her place within it.
PAGES: 177,178,180
Kiril mutters about the uncertain fate of the group. Saya lowers her eyelids, walks to the chair where her coat is, and places her necklace on it carefully. She doesn't find Kiril's words particularly harsh, though she realizes she had never doubted the world she saw, believing she was loved in it. She acknowledges the beauty of the place she can never return to. Saya forces a smile and bids farewell before leaving Kiril and Eduardo alone. Eduardo scolds Kiril for talking too much, but Kiril, claiming to be drunk, dismisses it. Kiril turns away, pale-faced, though he isn't actually drunk. Eduardo, knowing Kiril isn't well, helps him remove his jacket, revealing a silver chain with a ring, the same as the ones worn by their comrades. Kiril grumbles about someone being overly earnest. It was Kiril who suggested they all get matching rings years ago, a sign of their shared upbringing. Despite no longer being children, they continued wearing the rings, though Kiril stopped at some point after learning their mission's truth. Kiril's harshness intensified from then on. As Eduardo ponders this, Kiril looks at him with uncertain, feverish eyes. Kiril often falls ill, not due to drunkenness but due to the toll of repeated experiments on their bodies. Kiril is aware of this and hides it from everyone but Eduardo. Eduardo suspects Kiril's recent openness stems from a fear of death. Silently, Eduardo tugs on Kiril's chain and kisses the ring, wishing him goodnight. Meanwhile, Saya returns to her room and realizes she had been sitting in the dark. Tanya turns on the light, urging Saya to undress before her clothes wrinkle.
PAGES: 181,182,183
Tanya, a maid, notices that Saya seems exhausted and attributes it to her first masquerade ball. Tanya asks if there were any charming gentlemen at the ball and suggests Saya have some tea to relax before changing clothes. Saya responds indifferently, lost in her thoughts, but Tanya's gentle concern brings her back to the present. Tanya crouches in front of Saya and asks if something happened. Saya, unable to reveal the true reasons for her distress related to the Red Shield, forces a smile and assures Tanya that she's just tired. Tanya, sensing more, insists that Saya can talk to her if needed, as she has worked in many households and understands discretion. Tanya's warm touch and words remind Saya of Joel, stirring her emotions. Saya resolves to be stronger, find Diva quickly, and avoid relying on Haji. Despite her resolve, memories of happier times with Joel and Haji resurface, making her yearn for the past, which she considers a sin. Overcome, Saya admits that she believes everyone who gets involved with her ends up unhappy. Tanya reassures her, saying that at least for her, Saya’s presence has made her days more enjoyable and fulfilling. Tanya expresses her love for making girls beautiful and appreciates that Saya has brought excitement into her life. She encourages Saya to let her enjoy her work and reminds her that happiness and unhappiness are not predetermined but are choices people make. Tanya's words offer a sense of comfort, highlighting the importance of self-agency in shaping one's happiness.
PAGES: 184,185,186
Tanya notices Saya looking distressed and tries to comfort her. Tanya jokes about needing to prescribe special lotion for Saya, who struggles to hold back her tears. Saya asks why Tanya is so kind to her, despite just having met her. Tanya explains that she tends to care for girls she likes and reveals she once had a daughter. This revelation catches Saya's attention. Tanya reflects on her past, sharing that she has taken care of many children and chooses to focus on happiness rather than misfortune. Tanya's philosophy is that happiness and unhappiness are choices we make ourselves. She then leaves Saya to prepare for a makeover, urging her to do something about her sad expression. Meanwhile, Eduardo encounters Maxim in the hallway, who warns against getting too attached to others as it can cause complications later. Eduardo suggests that Maxim speaks from personal experience, which briefly unsettles Maxim. Valeri arrives, interrupting their conversation, and Eduardo silently leaves. Valeri, unsure of what to say, stammers when asked if he needed something.
PAGES: 187,188
In this segment, Valeri expresses concern to Maxim about not having had much opportunity to talk recently due to recent events. Maxim apologizes for any trouble, suggesting that dealing with Rodion might be challenging. Valeri denies any trouble but mentions that Kiril noticed Maxim has been acting alone a lot lately. This is a reflection of Valeri's own unease and frustration, especially since Saya's arrival, which has created a sense of disconnection. Although they live in the same estate, they have been seeing less of each other due to their busy schedules. Maxim responds lightheartedly, jokingly asking if Valeri thinks he's plotting something nefarious. Valeri vehemently denies this, feeling flustered and unable to explain her anxiety. Maxim then takes his glasses and reassures her directly, saying there is nothing to worry about. Valeri, feeling treated like a child, is frustrated by the distance between them despite being comrades. He silently shows Maxim his ring, asking if he's being truthful. Maxim reassures his once more that everything is fine.
