v0.15 alpha testing and patchnotes
In this test, my composer P, had their first go at testing the game.
He had a rough start due to P skipping the tutorial and opening cutscene(s) accidentally by pressing ESC a bunch. But enjoyed the music that I had added to the game. I will never get sick of a music track having both an exploration and battle variant that fade cleanly into each other, and he got to see that in action for the first time.
I also added debug controls for him to scroll through the tracks as needed, so he could listen to things in different contexts. Even more debug controls were added to bypass fuel restrictions using shift+click. I made notes to take those controls out before the release of the game, but I am sure that something (or multiple things) will still slip through...
His main criticism was that the way text was delivered (and the speed of which), through the text box, was hard to read. That set me on a multi-day odyssey of refactoring the entire textbox object to allow it to be scrollable. Not as easy as one might think due to my use of a very handy text displaying object. But that is a story for another post!
P is a big fan of SMT and RPGs in general, and so I am looking forward to hearing more of his feedback on the game as it comes...

– Missing Person in Montrose
CASE LEVEL: Three
POINTS REQUIRED: Three Hundred Fifty
OVERVIEW:
The wixen town of Montrose, Mississippi doesn’t appear on many maps, the population so small that its existence is often overlooked. Those who do know of it seem only to be able to give vague impressions, heard from a friend of a friend, seemingly very few people having visited themselves. It’s said to be an idyllic place, though, quaint and homey, the sort of town where everyone knows each other, but not with any great reason for outsiders to visit, especially considering how difficult it is to find. It remained largely overlooked up until recently, when Ian Horton reported his sibling, Shelby, missing, after apparently taking a trip to see Montrose for themself.
Ian Horton says that Shelby, who has previously been known to take trips to little visited towns and villages around the country, curious to learn about these self sustaining communities and what secrets they might hold, left to visit Montrose a few weeks ago, but never returned. They did not give a return date, but Ian insists that they always contact the rest of the family on their trips, and he hasn’t heard from them since receiving a short message that they had made it to the town safely.
It is currently unclear if Shelby ever left the town, but Montrose is their last known location. As of now, it has been difficult to contact any residents of the town, the town itself seemingly mostly cut off from the outside world, no connection to floo, even with anti appration wards protecting it, and so an in person investigation will be necessary to gain any more information about Shelby’s disappearance.
PERSONS OF INTEREST:
Ian Horton: The victim’s brother who reported Shelby missing only a day ago, after weeks without any word from them. He says that Shelby has spent the past five years or so visiting towns like Montrose, but they had seemed particularly excited about this visit, thought, why he isn’t sure. He’s handed over the notes that Shelby left behind of their research on the town.
Mayor Zahra Gates: The mayor of the town, and the only person that aurors have been able to contact, although even then communication has been minimal. She seems willing to cooperate, and welcome aurors into their small community, but expressed confusion over the idea that there might be a missing person in Montrose.
Yvonne Sinclair: A member of the town council, who Mayor Gates has offered as a guide to Montrose, as it is difficult to find, and to show aurors around the town once there. She will meet aurors at the nearest main road, as there are no roads or landmarks to help find the location of the town, and they have strong wards to keep it concealed from no-majs.
CHIEF’S NOTES:
With Montrose being the last location Shelby was known to have visited, someone there has to know something. Be careful as you explore the town, watch each other’s backs, and please keep me updated.

since I just finished CONFINIUM act 1 version 1.00 I’ve got a LOT of little thoughts and wonderings about it
long post full of big spoilers below the cut!
First off, it’s really good game. Like, REALLY good. I definitely enjoyed it, and am very eager to see what act 2 will have in store.
Zones Jupiter and Saturn are probably the prettiest places I’ve ever seen in an OFF fangame. Especially near the beginning of the game, before the spectre attacks start getting more frequent; they feel very peaceful and beautiful, and not unrealistically so, either. They’ve both got a lot of very creative things going on in them.
The boss fight with Alpha was the most interesting of the three Add-On boss fights. I hesitated the longest before attacking it, because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen if I destroyed it. Its presence felt a lot more real, since you get to chase it down and see the spectres and mayhem it leaves in its wake.
Zone Pluto was really short. It’s near the end of the game, yes, but it’s supposedly the capital city, and cities are big. The theater building felt nice and realistic, like many places in CONFINIUM do, and it would’ve been nice to see more of what Pluto is really like. After how breathtaking and lively the previous zones were, it seemed very tiny and I wished it had more things to do in it.
Speaking of Pluto, where was everybody? In zone Saturn and the return to zone Jupiter, we know what happened to the people there. But with Pluto, it’s completely deserted with no explanation, and the lack of hints about what caused it makes it a lot less scary than the previous zones.
The violence shown on screen felt perfectly brutal. Seeing how scared the civilians are, seeing them get attacked and suffer, is an extreme contrast to their peaceful, pretty environment. Pilot and Navigator are a lot more human than Batter from OFF; their rushing in to defend and console the civilians they’re fighting for feels very personal, and I quickly got attached to them and the other people in the zones. I was relieved for every man I saved, and felt really bad for every burnt I had to kill.
The hospital was scary. The atmosphere was extraordinarily tense, with the perfect amount of distressing and nauseating things to see. If I had to complain about one thing with it, it’d be how the burnt patients respawn when you reenter the maps they’re in; they’re not hard to fight, but their tragic deaths would weigh a lot heavier if they stayed down after being killed.
You know what? The whole return to zone Jupiter was scary. After having seen how happy Pilot and Navigator were there, and looked around at all the people casually living their lives, it was so ominous to return to find it almost completely deserted. The game’s transition into horror caught me off-guard in just the right way.
I’m extremely curious about Pilot and the caramel extract. It’s even mentioned in his bio how dependent on caramel he is, so I was always keeping an eye on the caramel in his inventory, and feeling like it was a big anvil hanging over him, waiting to fall and cause a tragedy. This also plays a huge part in what made the hospital so scary. I’d had Pilot save a man from a burnt much earlier, and he gave away his caramel ration to the survivor so that man wouldn’t burn, too. So when I got to the hospital-- full of his former comrades turned burnt from overconsumption of the stuff-- it filled me with dread to see him anxiously reach for his caramel to cope with the stress, only to find there wasn’t any left and he’d have to remain calm without it. I’m not sure if it would’ve been better or worse if he’d still had it on him at that moment.
Continuing about caramel, I found the fellow in the morgue and exchanged the patient records (which I enjoyed reading, they really added to the atmosphere) for some more caramel. I waited for the time when Pilot would reach for it again, but he never did. The caramel looks like it can be consumed at any time outside of combat, but I was never sure if I’d need it later or not. I was kind of let down that it was never brought up again. Did I miss something that could’ve made Pilot burn? There were a lot of scary things in the hospital. Is it even possible for him to burn in-game, or is it not a real risk? Would things have gone differently if I’d never completed the sidequest for the man in the morgue? Does Pilot simply feel better having caramel with him just in case? Would things have actually gone bad for Pilot if he’d kept the caramel from the military and eaten it on the stairs instead of giving it away? What if I’d had him eat the first caramel before he could’ve given it away to anyone?? (I could probably answer all these caramel questions by opening the game’s R3PROJ file in RPG Maker, but I'd really rather not dig through its files at this point)
So yeah, now I’m worried about how well Pilot might fare in zones 1 and 2, since sugar and dessert seem to only exist in zone 3 on that side of the world (at least, that’s how it seems in OFF, as the people in zone 1 only acknowledge four elements).
I liked the parts of the story that focused more on Pilot and Navigator than I did the parts focusing on Frog Prince. I did like Frog Prince’s parts, but I also figured out who he really was very quickly; I had less to learn about him than I do about Pilot and Navigator, who are new characters that I’m still getting to know. Pilot and Navigator’s lives are a lot more relatable, especially early on. Seeing them interact with each other, interact with other people, start their plane, call their superiors to give status updates, and try and get a signal for their radio, made their adventure feel that much more real, and I felt for their struggle throughout the whole game. Whenever they spoke, they had my complete attention.
The cutscenes between the King, the guardians, and the, uh... big evil toad, were just right. I have no complaints about them. They were mysterious, and served well to make me progressively more intrigued by the plot and characters.
Seeing Zacharie as a doctor/researcher was interesting. It’s a fan theory I’ve seen before, but never in a fangame. I think it was handled well, here. I could dig it.
Did Sugar ever get her “cure” to the King?? I mean, we travel with Frog Prince all over the place pursuing her, she apparently met with Zacharie to get it, and we find her in Pluto, but nothing resembling a cure is found after she vanishes or Epsilon is defeated. And the King doesn’t exactly appear to be in perfect condition when we reach him, either.
The chase to shoot down the final boss was nice, refreshing, and challenging, but the actual fight with it in the nothingness felt too easy. Pilot was level 14 during the fight, and the battle mode was set to “active”, but the fight wasn’t complex and I never felt like I was in danger of losing. None of my party members died during the fight. I can also say that the optional surprise fight with the Hern was much harder than any of the real bosses, which isn’t a good thing. The only boss that felt about as hard as the Hern was Naamah, but she’s not an Add-On or the Trinity.
The text boxes during the Add-On fights that mentioned them “getting distorted” made me think they were going to transform throughout the fight or go through multiple stages. It surprised me that none of them did that.
The random encounters in Pluto felt like they needed more variety. At many points, it felt like the Lurker, Jorunna, and Crying Spectre were all I was fighting-- most certainly not helped by the fact that I’d already seen the Lurker and Jorunna in the hospital. CONFINIUM has less monsters than other fangames and that’s perfectly fine, but Pluto’s small size and high encounter rate made me feel overexposed to those ones in particular.
The game ended on a perfect cliffhanger. Plane crash? New character to meet? Wondering if any of my party will still be alive in act 2? I’m invested!
I could go on but this post is already super long so I’ll end it here. CONFINIUM is a cool game, and I loved playing it!

Project Bonsai Devlog #1
This will be the first of several dev logs I will write for my current Game Development project, named Project Bonsai for now. For those who follow me for my art, this will be a strange change of pace as I switch to mostly posting long lines of text, or the occasional in game screenshot.
When I first started this project, I only had one goal in mind: just get a game done and have it published. To do this I returned to a game genre that I had a small amount of development experience already under my belt in as well a genre I enjoy, narrative based adventure games. To this end I started researching ways to build it, and came to the conclusion that the KISS method is always best, and went with the Twine Engine, a narrative game engine that can be modified with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, all languages I am extremely proficient in.
In designing the mechanics, I initially wanted to keep it fairly simple with staples in the genre, multiple path choices and some small item fetch quests to move forward. However, in order to make it stand out I added two distinct features: the first, while not original, is an important in how I added the second, adding random rpg fighting encounters to break the monotony of a story driven campaign. However, encounters all have consequences to the social aspects of the narrative plot. Your character being injured may end up limiting choices in physical encounter choices, or may effect how sympathetic they are with you. Status effects from combat will also affect you in similar ways. For example, becoming confused can make choices go in the opposite path that you wanted, becoming poisoned can make choices timed events, etc.
The reason I decided to add the consequences from combat to the “social” aspect is two fold. First, as a frequent DM for tabletop, nothing annoys me more than the lack of thought for the “social” consequence in Table Top Role Playing. In many cases, there is usually no thought in player characters minds to the fact that their actions, or inactions, have consequences in these imagined worlds. Often times I would find that players would just run straight from encounters in dirty places straight to their patrons, and it annoyed me that they didn’t think about things you would think about in real life for an important meeting, like personal appearance. Secondly, I have read around the net from various personalities like Burnie Burns of Rooster Teeth about how they have had a negative experience playing much more advanced but fundamentally similar games to this project like Detroit Become Human or similar titles in the Narrative Game Genre where it is often not clear you were going down negative paths till the very end. In this case, I came to the conclusion that there needs to be a way that you could measure whether or not you are going down the right path or not. Positive and Negative consequences from combat could open up avenues to seeing how you are progressing the game, and could give insight or reasons as to why you are following the more dire paths in this narrative game.
All in all, this is where I am starting with Project Bonsai in this first week of development. Currently working in my prototype I have a turn based combat system, a list of status effects, a way to traverse forward without clicking links, and a rudimentary UI. It is not much to look at right now, but it’s only been one week. Next week I am hoping to have at least a working draft to start story boarding major events and other visuals, so tune in for that!

After the path of File, add space
Press ENTER you will get a window.
You can now be able to see the server on your friend’s tab,
NOTE- Phantom should be running when you want to play.

This final entry has been a long time coming and it is time to finally wrap up this list.
You ever wonder about those games or stories that never get released in the region you live in, those stories you may never get to experience because an executive didn’t think it would sell well in your region? The story of Xenoblade Chronicles goes back to a fan campaign in 2011, which was the first time I had ever heard of the game. During the Wii’s life cycle, particular in North American, had been deemed the ‘casual gamer’s console’ mostly due to low sales of games that didn’t fall into Wii’s more casual demographic at the time. Nintendo of America had little interest of localizing Xenoblade for that reason. Though Project Rainfall cannot be considered the only cause of game release it did raise awareness of the game’s existence. When Nintendo released the game in North American, it was given a limited release exclusive to their online store and Gamespot. A Cult status soon developed around the game to the point where copies of the original release were hard to find if you didn’t buy it when the game first came out. Stores were selling copies for as much as a hundred dollars if not more. Since that time Xenoblade has not only had two rereleases on both the 3DS and recently the Nintendo Switch with its Definitive Edition but has had two follow-ups in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 which I discussed earlier in this list.
It is still hard to believe that this game was almost never released in North America and how horrible that would have been. Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those RPGs that comes along once in a great awhile that feels more like an experience then most games I play and that is not praise I give to very many games and left an impression not may games have.
Xenoblade Chronicles takes place on a world with seemingly endless ocean except for two titans: the Bionis and the Mechonis. In ages past, these Titans would fight for seemingly endless ages until they killed each other. Upon their deaths, the World of Xenoblade takes place upon the bodies of these Titans. As their names suggest: The Bionis brought forward natural biological lifeforms while the Mechonis hosted a series of Machine life. Even though the Titans were dead, the people of these two titans continued to battle. Those on Mechonis were sending machines called Mechon. These Mechon would invade Bionis and ‘eat’ the people of the Bionis for unknown reasons. During a recent conflict called the “Battle of Sword Valley, the Hero of the Hom people, Dunban, utilized an ancient weapon called the Mondo, the only weapon that seemed to be able to destroy the Mechons easily. Though successful Dunban’s right arm was rendered useless and he was returned to his home on Colony 9. One year later, a researcher by the name of Shulk, who was studying the Mondo, would be caught up in another Mechon attack on his home. Though Dunban would be attempted to use the Mondo, he was unable to maintain control. In a desperate act, Shulk would take up the Mondo and found he could wield the Mondo effortlessly and started having vision which appear to be of the future, sometime Dunban never experienced with the blade. Due to an incident that occurred during that attack, Shulk leaves with his Friend, Reyn, to stop the Mechons and discover the truth of attacks. I’m leaving it there because to say more would spoil a whole lot of happenings. The story starts off with a lot happening and leaves questions that linger for the game’s entire story. The game strung me along in just the right way where I wanted to know what was happening and never seemed to hold back on making the points it tried to make.
Both the game’s party and even may of the NPCs you encounter are developed well, have their own issues, and are enjoyable all around. Despite many of the party members initially falling into pretty standard JRPG troupes they all have memorable moments throughout the game which make them all extremely likely and vary enough in gameplay to make them each fun to play in their own right.
Xenoblade Chronicles utilizes a real time battle system which utilizes an action panel to select arts which the player uses to attack. Even though it looks like it is a heavy action game at first glance, it actually plays more similar to other real time RPGs. The movement in battle is more for positioning and avoiding attacks then any amount of hacking and slashing. Combat utilizes “Art” attacks that have cool down system to keep the game from simply turning into smashing buttons. Many of the arts have other properties that have to be considered when using them such as positioning, follow ups to other arts, or Auras that add addition support. This makes for a pretty interesting battle system. In addition, the battle system makes use of story elements as occasionally Shulk will see a vision of a dangerous incoming attack allow the player the opportunity to counter the attack before it can happen. This is usually done in the case of lethal attacks and happens just enough for it to be useful but not bog down the game too much where it is not needed. This battle system is also heavily customizable as the Skill Link and gear differences do create quite a few options, many that I didn’t even realize till my 2nd playthrough of the game.
The original Wii version of the game did suffer some in the graphical department, which has been updated in later releases. The game was definitely held back by the Wii’s limited graphical capabilities as the models are extremely blurry and distorted. However, despise the limitations the team definitely pushed the Wii to its absolute limit with its massive maps, enemy variety, and great character designs for each of the major characters. The game’s soundtrack is absolutely amazing with some of my absolute favorite JRPG music of all time.
Xenoblade Chronicles has not only topped this list, but it is fair for me to say that Xenoblade Chronicles is probably among my favorite games of all time for its beautiful story, expansive world, and memorable characters. Having replayed the game before this review with the new Definition Edition for the Switch, I can still say the game has aged well and still remains one of my absolute favorites.
