meme // accepting !! // @royallyinbredit’s a little past three in the morning,   she couldn’t fall asleep,   a recurring theme in the younger grey’s life.   a bowl of cereal wasn’t going to fix that but it was a small distraction.   “  what?  ”   she wasn’t paying attention,   that much was obvious.   distracted from her distraction.   “   sh—    c r a p.    crapcrapcrap.  ”    carton of milk,   now mostly emptied between what was on the table and what had runoff onto the floor,   was quickly set down,   hand going from the carton to brushing hair back out of her face.   “  i—   i’ll clean up,   and uh—   go get more milk.  ”

      a quick nod as he moves to sit at the edge of the bed, shifting so that he’s laying down enough to prop his head up against the palm of his hand. “ wasn’t planning on going anywhere in the first place. “ he admits, fingers reaching out to move fallen strands of hair away from her face. “ just get some sleep before the kids decide it’s time to barge in here and wake you up. “ he mumbles quietly with a faint laugh.      it’s been a long day for everyone, especially them and it’s made him far more protective of the blonde than usual. maybe it’s why even after she falls asleep, he finds himself watching her. making sure she’s okay and safe. he drifts off after a while, only waking up hours later. the have to get up for work soon and it’s too late to leave now. “ crap. “ he mumbles quietly under his breath, positioning himself so that he’s laying down fully at last ( he’d be sore later, for sure ).  the pediatric surgeon is exhausted and falls back to sleep instantly when his head hits the pillow. eyes open upon hearing meredith’s alarm going off, met with her own eyes staring back at him. they’re much closer than either had been when he’d fallen asleep and his arm is wrapped around her. “ i━ uh, “ a beat as he pulls his arm away, “ sorry. “

the view from the hospital window is nice---even with the presence of news van after news van and the dull rhythm of reporter after reporter after reporter giving their stand-up for the breaking news sweeping the community at large, it’s easy enough to get distracted by the warmth of the sun in the sky; congratulations. you’ve lived to see another day. only when she hears the door open and promptly shut a moment later does she turn her gaze away, fixing it on the woman in the white lab coat, a gentle (if not sheepish) smile crossing her lips.

‘   I know, I know---I shouldn’t be straining myself.   ’   and while there is a dull ache in her bones, only overshadowed by the pain in her gut where she was previously stabbed and then stitched and then re-stitched after a second brawl with a killer that just didn’t know when to die---she hates laying around, especially when she’s anxious.   ‘   what doesn’t kill you, right?   ’

@royallyinbred // sc. “ i’m fine--- ”  a  l i e,  forced through clenched teeth as her legs shook beneath her.  it was a simple appendectomy,  a procedure that didn’t take a skilled surgeon more than an hour to do,  a procedure that a year ago lexie would have been able to do by herself.  but airplanes  c r a s h e d  and months were spent  recovering,  not able to practice medicine.  maybe she wasn’t quite ready to be back in the or,  that she pushing herself too hard,  t o o  f a s t.  “ ---stop giving me that look.”

     he’s calling complete bullshit on it as soon as the words leave her mouth. he understands guarding her heart after her husband’s death. a loss was already hard to handle, but your own husband? it’s got to be even harder.  he’s been there through it all, but lately conversations have taken a turn with her. they had been going back and forth about a possibility of them. subtle comments in the o.r. were made, hushed whispers in the halls. showing up late, after work, at her place when the kids were asleep to avoid them knowing anything.      suddenly it feels like she’s closing herself off again and he’s tired of this constant back and forth. “ cut the crap. you once told me that you didn’t want to fall in love again, unless it felt like family. “ hand is quick to motion between them, head dipping lower to meet her eyes. “ tell me this, us, doesn’t feel like family to you. ‘cause i gotta tell you, it always has to me. “ honesty spills from dry lips, letting out a heavy sigh. “ just━ just look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the same way. tell me that everything that’s happened between us lately, doesn’t feel right to you and i’ll━ i’ll leave you alone. i swear to god i’ll leave you alone. i’m done with the games, mer. you and i have both been through enough and i’m tired of it. so cut the crap and just be honest with not only me … but yourself, as well. all of this means nothing if you’re not honest with your own freakin’ heart. “

IT’S NOT TOO OFTEN SHE MAKES HER WAY TO SEATTLE,  especially these days.  there’s so much happening in los angeles,  so constantly,  that taking a trip has seemed....  IMPRACTICAL.  now,  though?  with the news of amelia’s tumor?  staying away seems trivial,  silly   (   avoiding meredith?  the SAME   ).   arms cross as she leans against the doorframe of the nearly-empty attending’s lounge.

            “ You’d think after two weeks, I’d have learned to KNOCK,” he said, shooting a pointed glance at the door to the on-call room. Truth be told, it hadn’t been much different at the last hospital he’d worked at -- but what could he say? He was an eternal optimist. Charlie let out a resigned and stuck out his hand to the other doctor.  “ Charlie Harris -- I’m the new orthopedic surgeon. I’d say I hope it’s not always this crazy -- but I know better, ”  he added with a rueful smile.

       i loved you. the words enter his mind and eat at him faster than he could think up something to respond with. he’s waited so long to hear three little words with such a huge meaning. waited day after day, month after month for her to just tell him that there was something between them. he felt it, knows she did as well. but she’s too busy being hung up over her dead husband to see it the same as him.         “ hang on, “ he’s still trying to process all of this. loved. “ hold up just a minute. you choose now to tell me all of this? now, when i’m━ when i’m getting married to jo. “ there’s the better part of him that’s telling him to just run away from this and go to his fiancé. then there’s the part of him that has his feet glued to the floor in front of her, willing himself to not walk away. “ damn it, mer. i freakin’ waited for you to get your shit together. i told you i was done with games. told you that i wanted a family with you, but you shut me out. you━ you pulled the plug on whatever we had. and now you want to tell me how you may or may not feel anymore? this is freakin’ crap and you know it. “
