One of the most important things I learned as an art student was “art doesn’t give a shit whether you like it or not; it’s art. Art cares whether it is successful or not. If it makes you angry and you go complain about it to someone, congratulations, you made that art successful.”

In less words, bitching about modern art still makes modern art “good” in terms of art. The only truly bad art is art that consistently elicits no emotional feeling at all. Anger, hatred, and dislike are all still feelings about art. Sometimes, especially with modern art, its the feeling that the artist is wanting you to have.

“My five year old could have done that!” But did they? Art in the wake of patrons is philosophical more than anything else. Since at LEAST Duchamp, art has entered a long lasting period of pushing the boundaries of “what is art and how does it function?” by exploring the limits of what art can be. What we have found is basically the conclusion we are at today: if the artist calls it art, it’s art. It needs to serve no greater purpose than that. That we still hang it on walls and engage in dialogue about it says something beautiful about the human condition.

What would violet carry in her bag?

We actually do see the contents of Violet's school bag when she dumps it out during the episode Home Invasion!

It's really hard to identify all of her belongings, but here's what I could spot:

Blue nail polish.

The Stranger by Albert Camus.

Some tangled-up earbuds.

Notebook with a flower pattern on the outside.

A black notebook of some kind (maybe a planner?)

Other things I can imagine her carrying around:

Cigarettes.

At least two lighters.

Basic essentials -- e.g. band aids, lip balm, wallet, tylenol.

Her iPod.

An extra book.

Pencil case with an absurd amount of stationary inside.

A pocket-sized book where she writes little notes, doodles in, etc.

Super minty gum.

Violet's exact bag is called the Rothco Israeli Paratrooper Crossbody Bag in the color Olive Drab. You can find it in a lot of places like Amazon (link), or eBay! In the show, she also decorated hers with pins.
