Busy as in a Traffic Jam
“From the busy streets, towards the calm beach, that is the goal in life” Gun RoswellBusy as in a Traffic Jam Busy, and too loud, are the streets I now walkThere is so much noise, I cannot her anyone nor myself talkAs I move forward, a lot of unhappy people I stalkSometimes just to the nature of things I this chalk But then I start to dream, as I continue still with much steamMy face lights up,…

From day one we’ve had a plan. The plan was to have a plan and be willing to change said plan at any moment. The only plan we had in mind as we entered Roswell, NM was to visit the International UFO Museum, then see what happened. So we left Alamogordo and hammered down through the mountains at the buttcrack of dawn, reaching Roswell around 9 am. At the edge of town, we did the usual top-off-the-gas-and-potty routine. Within a few minutes we were right back on the road, only a mile or two from our destination. After three or four blocks, I slam on the brakes and whip the van into a parking lot. Sorry, not sorry. This sign grabbed my attention and we had to go back! Perk ‘n Jerk
This little red building set back off the road was nothing special, except that it was. We entered a small room with two tables and a cluttered bar off to the side. Mike, the owner (pictured left), is a veteran who found his passions in life: coffee roasting (the Perk) and beef jerky (the Jerk). We sat down to some good coffee, and my curiosity bested me. I had to try some jerky! We sampled a few flavors, and things suddenly got very interesting (more on the jerky later—. Mike’s “walking billboard”, Jon, walked in. Jon (pictured right) is an unusual fellow. He starts, finishes, and fills out his entire day (every day) with caffeine. His energy level reflects that. Normally, that would annoy the snot out of me, but Jon is different. He has interesting ideas and original thoughts. His words carry substance, and he knows how to tell a captivating story. He immediately asks if the big, blue van is ours—a question we’ve become well accustomed to hearing now. Yes, it is. The conversation spiraled into story after story from a few decades ago when he took the same trip with three large dogs. He went in and dragged Mike out to show him. He flipped when he saw Scout! While we understood his desire to hold her, we knew she wouldn’t go for it—shy kitty. We ended up talking for a few hours! The three of us—Megan, Jon and myself—ended up meeting later and spending 4-5 more hours discussing many things I avoid discussing with most anyone—economics, religion, politics, societal tendencies, money—before he offered to let us stay in his driveway. A former co-worker told me several years back that when you hit a certain age, you pretty well don’t expect to make any more real friends. He and I had become fairly close when he said that. It’s stuck with me for quite a while now and came to mind when we left Roswell. Jon is a friend we never expected to make. The guy went out of his way for us in a way that humbled us to our cores. He reminded us a little bit of who we should be/ could be. Unlike the Germans, we did get his contact info and intend to stay in touch. Now I have to get back to this Perk ‘n Jerk place! The jerky is the best I’ve ever had. I love beef jerky. This stuff is...oh man! It’s good! He doesn’t do instagram, but look him up on Facebook. You can order online. When you do, let him know you heard about him from us. No, this isn’t a sponsored post; and no, we aren’t getting anything out of it besides the satisfaction of promoting a business with great people and top notch products! . . . . . . . . . #coffeeandjerky #perknjerk #coffeeandjesus #roswell #roswellnm #newmexico #roswellbusiness #smallbusiness #localbusiness #shoplocal #landofenchantment #landofentrapment #storiesfromtheroad #livinginavan #vandwellers #vanlife #vanlifejournal #vanlifemagazine #ohtheplacesyoullgo #vanlove #standbyyourvan #vanlifemovement #sheexplores #travelphotography #localpeople #travelbloggers #writingsofinstagram #journalism #vanlifediaries #exploretheunknown (at Perk N Jerk)
