Hi guys!
You will probably know that over the years, Gustav appeared on countless German and Eastern European postcards, as these were very popular back then for cinema stars and such - there are literally tons of these old postcards from the 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s floating around among collectors, with some being snapshots/stills from his movies and other being portraits of him, alone or with his co-stars.
So, I just thought that I'd share some of my favorite ones from my own collection... Do you have any favorites yourself? If so, feel free to share!
Here is the first one, still one of the best in my humble opinion. Enjoy!
P.S.: Why does nobody ever talk about his HAIR? Magnificent. As Warren Zevon would say, 'his hair was perfect'.

i just got a new photo! this time it's the Austrian Hermann Thimig, one of the most popular Austrian actors in German–language cinema. during his life, he starred in hundreds of films, the most important of which are "The Doll", "The Wildcat", "A Night in Venice", "Threepenny Opera", "Paradise on Earth", and "Victor and Victoria". i will definitely tell you about the latter one day.

however, first I must introduce you to Hermann.
like Anton Walbrook, Hermann came from a famous acting family. his father, Hugo Thimig, was an actor, director and stage manager at the Burgtheater, one of the most important theaters in the world. Herman's brother and sister, Helene and Huns, were also actors. Helene was married to Max Reinhardt's.
Hermann made his debut at the Meiningen Court Theatre. since 1916 he performed at the Berlin People's Theatre (Volksbühne) under the direction of Max Reinhardt's. in the same year, he began acting in silent films. with the advent of sound cinema, Thimig moved away from the dramatic stage and played mainly in operetta films and comedies.
he starred with such widely popular actors as Ossie Oswald, Henny Porten, Renate Müller, Heinz Rümann, Hilde Hildebrand and Adolf Wohlbrück.

there is an inscription in German on the back of the photo, which I cannot translate in any way. please, if you are familiar with German, help me! it may not even have any historical value, but I'm terribly curious!

Hertha von Walther by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Via Flickr: German postcard by Ross Verlag, no. 1847/1, 1927-1928. Photo: Binder. Hertha von Walther (1903-1987) was a German and stage actress, known for such German films as Die freudlose Gasse /Joyless Street (1925), Spione / Spies (1928) and M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder / M (1931). Hertha von Walther was born Hertha Stern in Hildesheim, Germany in 1903. She was the daughter of the later Prussian Major General Arthur Stern and Walther von Monbary and his wife Clara, née Gabain. Her father, a native of Stern-Gwiazdowski, came from Poland and was the adopted son of Rudolf Walther von Monbary. Her mother was originally French. She left boarding school in Wolfenbüttel at the age of 17 and attended drama school in Leipzig on a scholarship. After small roles at the theatre there, she moved to Berlin and was engaged at the Theater am Zoo and later at the Renaissance Theatre. Hertha von Walther was given small film roles as early as 1920. She made her film debut in Destinée (Edmund Linke, 1920), followed by the Luciano Albertini film Julot der Apache / Julot the Apache (Joseph Delmont, 1921) which she codirected, and Herzog Ferrantes Ende / Duke Ferrante's End (Paul Wegener, Rochus Gliese, 1922). She appeared as an extra in Tragödie der Liebe / Tragedy of Love (Joe May, 1923), which starred Mia May opposite Emil Jannings as the evildoer. In 1924, Von Walther played the sister of Luis Trenker in the mountaineers film Der Berg des Schicksals / The Mountain of Destiny by Arnold Fanck. In G.W. Pabst's classic film Die freudlose Gasse /Joyless Street (1925), she played Else, one of the victims of the butcher played by Werner Krauß, whom she later kills. Von Walther had the female lead in Der Herr des Todes / The Master of Death (Hans Steinhoff, 1926), while she was the weaver's daughter in Die Weber / The Weavers (Frederic Zelnik, 1927), Doña Ines in Paul Czinner's Doña Juana (1927), starring Elisabeth Bergner, Brigitte Helm's dubious friend in Abwege / The Devious Path (G. W. Pabst, 1928), and the innkeeper's daughter in the Harry Piel film Mann gegen Mann / Man Against Man (Harry Piel, 1928). Another lead Von Walther had in Das Geständnis der Drei / The Confession of the Three (James Bauer, 1929) as a woman accused of killing her husband, a fraudulent, criminal baron. Typecast as the shady woman, Hertha von Walther played the role of an opium addict in Fritz Lang's film Spione / Spies (1928), and in Lang's early sound film M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder / M (1931) she was a prostitute. In addition to major supporting parts Hertha von Walther also played many minor parts in film. In 1935 she married the director Paul May, at whose request she no longer appeared in films. Yet, after her divorce in 1936, she returned to film, but was only given minor roles. During the Second World War, she took part in tours to support the troops in France, the Netherlands and Russia. She evaded attempts by the Gestapo to use her as an agent by fleeing Germany in June 1943. She travelled to Portugal and then to Brazil in 1948. There she lived with her second husband, the Russian geologist Alexander Scherbina in a remote mining region. She also returned to the theatre at the Deutsche Kammerspiele in Rio de Janeiro. In 1960, Hertha von Walther returned to Germany alone. She went on tour and made guest appearances at various theatres. She was also given small roles in several films, including Ingmar Bergman's The Serpent Egg / Das Schlangenei (1977) and the first instalment of the Schulmädchen Reports, Schulmädchen-Report - Was Eltern nicht für möglich halten / Schoolgirl Report Volume #1: What Parents Don't Think Is Possible (Ernst Hofbauer, 1970). Brigitte Helm

Vintage German postcard. Ross Verlag, Berlin, No. 4380/1, c. 1929. Photo by E.O. Hoppé, London.
German actress Brigitte Helm (1908-1996) is still famous for her dual role as Maria and her double the evil Maria, the Maschinenmensch, in the silent SF classic Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927). After Metropolis she made a string of over 30 films in which she almost always had the starring role. She easily made the transition to sound films, before she abruptly retired in 1935.
