Michael Kirchoff’s Top 10
__________________
Over the course of this last year (and a little before, honestly) I had the opportunity to witness both online and first hand some beautiful and wonderfully abstract work in the form of some cameraless photographs by many inventive photographers. There seems to be a recent influx of this type of art in the photographic community, and I couldn’t be more impressed by it. From the materials used to the DIY attitude these artists have taken on, I felt it only right to highlight my Top 10 thematically. No cameras were used in the making of these works, only photographic materials, and an expanding imagination - all with the intention of creating something unique and individual as the artists themselves. I urge everyone to take a moment to investigate these ideas and processes further. Long live analog!

This photo is from the Big Bang series by Ross Sonnenberg. This series is created through a photogram process using fireworks as a light source. Ross stated that he wanted his art to evoke chaos since his life was also turned into chaos by a debilitating disease. I find it amazing that you can make photography like this. I think that the use of color and texture in these photos is wonderful. Ross uses simple things like sand, water, and other objects to bring in color or texture to his photos.

Ross Sonnenberg
Photographer Ross Sonnenberg has created these amazing abstract photograms by exposing photographic paper to fireworks. He has been experimenting with camera-less photography for his project 'Color Bang'.
Ross Sonnenberg a Photographic Artist has created a variety of camera less images, he is best known for his project ‘Color Bang’, in which Sonnenberg has exposed photographic paper to fireworks in attempt to create abstract images that look like galaxies.
Tumblr media
Ross Sonnenberg says:
“I have always been fascinated by the planets and stars, looking through telescopes and wondering what these far off places might look like. With this series I have tried to create imaginary solar systems and super novas using different materials, and fireworks for my light source to make one-of-a-kind camera less images directly onto color and black and white photographic paper. Like the darkness in outer space, I work in the dark to create images that mimic the interstellar places that I always dreamed about going to as a kid.”
Tumblr media
“Chance is a great part in the work but I use different materials to get different shapes and colors, I started with black and white paper then moved on to color paper with which there is more possibilities.”
Sonnenberg’s collection ‘Color Bang’ was an experimental project which was inspired by the photograms of Susan Derges, Marco Breuer and Christopher Bucklow.
Susan Derges
Susan Derges studied painting at Chelsea School of Art and the Slate School of Fine Art, London. Derges showed an early interest in abstraction because she says “it offered the promise of being able to speak of the invisible rather than to record the visible” she experimented with camera less photography after becoming frustrated at the way “the camera always separates the subject from the viewer”.
Much of Derges’ recent work has been made at night in the open air; using the natural world as her darkroom she has quite literally invented a new way of making pictures.
Tumblr media
Much of her subsequent work has dealt with this relationship – of separation and connectedness with the natural world.  Her methods have been consistently experimental, a constant search for new cameraless methods of recording imagery, including the photogram, while directly connecting with the world she observes.
For the 1997 ‘River Taw’ series she worked at night, placing photographic paper on the river bed and allowing the images to be exposed through ambient light, aided by the use of a flash gun.
"Walking along the river I realised that if I worked outside in the dark with something that was real, if I worked at night then the whole night became my dark room and the river was my long transparency. I was able to work directly with the subject – no intermediaries – no lens between us."
Chris Bucklow
Chris Bucklow is a British artist best known for his paintings and photographs, his series ‘The Guests’ are photograms of men and women are made through a complex multi-step process and the results are amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Bucklow’s on words during an interview with Installation Magazine ‘The Guests are made of light.  What you see in these photographs is a blue sky with thousands of suns- a sky where all the suns swarm together to form a human constellation.  The images from this series are made with a pinhole camera.  Such a camera would usually have only one pinhole aperture for its lens, but the camera I use is a homemade giant, the size of a large packing crate, which has more than 25,000 pinholes.  By using the shadow-silhouette of my models, I arrange the apertures so that the solar images fall into the shape of the figure, and each sun looks like a glowing cell.’
Tumblr media
Bucklow begins with the artist projecting the shadow of his sitter on a large sheet of aluminum foil and tracing its outline. He then makes thousands of small pinholes in the foil silhouette. Using a contraption of his own device that places the foil over a large sheet of photographic paper, Bucklow then wheels his homemade "camera" out into daylight and pulls the "shutter" to briefly expose the paper to direct sunlight. Thus each finished picture becomes a unique photogram silhouette composed of thousands of pinhole photographs of the sun. The intensity of light on a given day and the length of exposure create unique color variations on how the resulting piece appears.
