Review: Rose Avenue's 'Age Old Drink' revives the indie-rock sound and leaves you wanting more

Four-piece indie rock band Rose Avenue have been getting stuck in with their music as they write, produce and record it all fully independently. Since forming at high school in 2018, the band have quite the extensive discography that's recently taken a new direction since the release of single 'Head in the Clouds.'

Inspired by the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and Wallows, the group have taken a turn towards more guitar-heavy releases hoping to soon overthrow their most popular Spotify track with something a little more representative of the current stage of their musical journey.

Now, the group return with quite the gripping instrumentally explosive single 'Age Old Drink' set to release later this week. This new track sits at just over three minutes in length, yet the first minute alone brings a sense of captivation that we haven't heard in indie-rock for quite some time. Originating with softened vocals and a delicate riff, the track slowly builds into quite the eruptive catchy mix as the volume raises and the drum beats progressively add their flair. By the second verse you'll only just be catching up with what hit you the first time around, bobbing your head along to this euphoric soundscape that confidently provides something fresh, and more than delivers on their promise of a guitar-heavy progression. With every evolving element there's a little twist around the corner, whether it be the rising energy, an absolutely roof-raising electric guitar solo or a moment of slower pacing to catch your breath and focus on the lyrics at hand.

With a journey so bold within the sound alone, 'Age Old Drink' has quite the tough job of bringing lyricism that'll grab your attention on anywhere near the same level. Though somehow this twangy, fast-paced track holds an underlying melancholy that prevails when you listen a little harder to what's being sung. Pouring a conversational yet poetic narrative through the shredded pages of 'Age Old Drink', the central themes resonate around questioning a partner's honesty and faithfulness. With moments that aren't explicitly obvious on first listen, the striking chorus hook 'I can't believe a cab would take this long from second street...' makes all the more sense when you reevaluate perspectives of the partner waiting, counting down the minutes for someone that's far too late to be where they said they were.
