The TERF group Women’s Declaration International is holding an event in Portland tomorrow (11/19) at noon; show up to counterprotest if you’re around! Rose City Antifa published a great article about who they are and why they suck that includes leaked video from their planning calls. They use the term “trans eliminationist pseudofeminist” instead of TERF which I think is great because I agree that “exclusionist” is too weak a word for how harmful their ideology is. It’s a good read, take a look:

Elon Musk is no stranger to court proceedings, but you wouldn’t know that reading this deposition that was released Monday. Musk was deposed in a lawsuit over the Tesla CEO falsely tweeting that a college kid from a different state was secretly a federal agent sent to disguise himself as a neo-Nazi and start a fight with the Proud Boys to make conservatives look bad.

As Rolling Stone reports, the case in question involves a 22-year-old Jewish man named Ben Brody. Back in June, a group of Proud Boy thugs got into a fight with members of the neo-Nazi group, the Rose City Nationalists at Oregon City’s first Pride Night Fest, which they showed up to terrorize. People were able to begin matching names to faces using images posted online. In an attempt to paint the brawl as a “false flag” orchestrated by a federal agency, conservative accounts began to falsely claim that Brody was one of the participants.

Brody wasn’t even in Oregon at the time of the brawl, but that didn’t stop right-wing accounts from claiming he was a federal agent and sharing his personal information. Musk replied to one tweet, saying, “Always remove their masks,” and later replied to a separate post saying, “Looks like one is a college student (who wants to join the govt) and another is maybe an Antifa member, but nonetheless a probable false flag situation.”

That second reply had more than a million views, and ultimately, the harassment became so serious that Brody and his family had to flee their home. He filed suit in October, and despite Musk’s lawyer’s attempts to keep the deposition confidential, the court released it to the public on Monday. And while Musk continually falling for right-wing conspiracy theories is kind of old news at this point, he somehow managed to make himself look even worse during the deposition.

Musk essentially admitted to everything Brody alleged in his lawsuit, including that he never looked for more information and got everything he thought he knew from those Twitter posts. When asked about whether or not he had looked at the account he replied to in order to see their other tweets, Musk said, “I wasn’t trying to assess their credibility.” He also claimed that he had “a limited understanding” of “what the lawsuit is about” and accused Brody’s lawyer of secretly being the one actually suing him to “[get] a lot of money.” 

Musk also attempted to avoid taking accountability for not vetting the accounts he interacts with, saying that “if you’re suggesting that in order to reply to anyone, you have to scroll through all their posts, that would make it impossible to use the system.” He did however eventually say, “I’m guilty of many self-inflicted wounds.”

Other comments should definitely have investors concerned, including Musk saying, “I may have done more to financially impair the company than to help it. I do not guide my posts by what is financially beneficial but what I believe is interesting or important or entertaining to the public.” Nothing says “great investment” quite like the owner of a company admitting he’s hurting that company’s finances. 

In an unexpected twist, Musk also admitted that he was behind an account with the handle @Ermnmusk that he used to role-play as his three-year-old son, posting things such as, “I wish I was old enough to go to nightclubs. They sound so fun,” and, “Do you like Japanese girls?” Why a billionaire wanted to pretend to be a child on the internet, we can’t say, but it’s definitely creepy and weird. Then again, this is Elon Musk we’re talking about, so creepy and weird kind of come with the territory.

Musk also admitted to having a second burner account that appears to have been misrecorded in the transcript as “baby smoke 9,000" but is most likely @babysmurf9000. That one wasn’t as creepy and weird as the one where he pretended to be a toddler, but he did use it to call Mark Cuban an idiot, so there is that. 

He also claimed that he had no idea that Brody had requested he retract his “false flag” posts and that despite millions of followers seeing his posts, he doesn’t agree that Brody “has been meaningfully harmed by this.” According to Musk, it’s “rare” for incidents like this one to have “a meaningful negative impact” on the victims.

Musk also made broader admissions about his failures with X — which has plummeted in value since his takeover in 2022 — saying he “may have done more to financially impair” the social media site than help it. Musk also confirmed that he once used a burner account on X seemingly to role-play as his toddler son.

Let’s Talk:What is Antifa?

First, Antifa stands for anti-facism or anti-facist. It’s not an organization, but there is an flag/symbol that is commonly used among Antifa groups (seen below)

Antifacists oppose Facism, which often is seen as a fascist government (such as the Nazi Party, the National Facist Party, etc.) but can also been seen on a personal level with neo-nazis, white supremacists, alt-right people, etc.

“Antifa has no centralized leadership structure or formalized membership,” People who identify as being antifacist come from all different backgrounds. There is not a single Antifacist ideology. “Anti-fascists express political beliefs commonly associated with the far-left end of the political spectrum.” This includes political beliefs such as anarchism, communism, socialism, etc.

As an Antifacist in an interview with War on the Rocks put it, “Anyone … who is against Nazis or against fascism is anti-fascist. Many, many people are anti-fascists.” Facism is described by dictionary.com as “a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.” and

Antifacists only exist because of a need to oppose facism and facists

Antifa History

The Anti Defamation League states Antifa began in the 60s, Brittanica says 40s, and Time Magaizine said it started hundred of years ago. As long as facism has been around, so have anti-fascists. All of which have some truth to them, as Antifacist movements have been around since the 30s when Hitler rose to power, but, according to Wikipedia, gained popularity in the US “to oppose white supremacy and skinheads,” in the 60s and 70s.

A few antifacist groups through history include:

White Rose (Nazi Germany)

Edelweiss Pirates (Nazi Germany)

Arditi del Popolo (Mussolini)

Anti-Facist Action (British National Party)

Anti-Racist Action (Facism in America)

Rose City Antifa (Facism in America)

Antifascist’s goal:

“Today, antifa activists focus on harassing right wing extremists both online and in real life.” and “Their presence at a protest is intended to intimidate and dissuade racists,” (via ADL). Antifa’s intent and main goal is to destroy facism, which includes alt-right people, racists, etc. Antifa’s main goal isn’t violence, but it can happen when tensions rise. Antifacists want to scare alt-right people, or at least dissuade them from organizing events such as Charlottesville’s Unite the Right rally in 2017. This strategy is referred to “no platform” and is simply refusing to give them a platform.

In an interview with Time Magazine, Gord Hill describes the above strategy, “...deny fascists a public platform from which they can spread their propaganda and also organize and recruit. That’s why these large public events that the far-right has been trying to organize in the last few years have been targeted by anti-fascists to shut them down,”

A Wikipedia article describes antifa as: “autonomous groups that aim to achieve their objectives through the use of both non-violent and violent direct action rather than through policy reform. Antifa political activists engage in protest tactics such as digital activism and militancy against fascists and racists such as neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other far-right extremists whom they seek to combat.”

Overall, Antifa’s main goal isn’t violence. Wes Enzinna describes it in an NPR interview, “While their tactics are sometimes violent, the underlying ideology in general is not one that's committed to violent worldview in the way that ISIS, for example - their ideology - is or in the way that the white supremacist movement is largely committed to a sort of violent worldview,”

However, Antifa has been known to use violence but, as ADL puts it, “[Right wing extremists] have murdered hundreds of people in this country over the last ten years alone. To date, there have not been any known antifa-related murders.” So while antifa has engaged in violence, they have never been responsible for any murders and usually only engaged in violence against facists.

And sometimes antifa violence has been known to de-platform white nationalists such as Richard Spencer, who was punched in the face while making a public appearance. He later said in an interview with the Washington Post that, “...he can no longer hold events publicized in advance,” Spencer said in that same interview that, “Antifa is winning.” Protesters have been known to block people from getting into his events and drown out what he was saying at events as well.

TLDR:

- antifa isn’t an organization

- antifa uses violent and non-violent tactics

- most of antifa’s goal is to silence facism

- antifa hasn’t been linked to any of the current 2020 protests
