Nano this year is titled: Vanguard of Your Destruction and features Michael Shepard, aka: Biotic Pinball Wizard. It’s one of my mShenko pairings and also features Kaidan’s biotic twin sister, Kandra.
Tagging anyone who wants to share anything they’ve been working on, Nano related or not!!! Just tag me please so I don’t miss it!
(under cut for length)
** The Great Unknown by X Ambassadors
~~~
Music blares in the kitchens to be heard over the shake and rattle of pots, pans and utensils; a common atmosphere in the café. At the moment, during the height of the early evening rush, Kandra assists Stu and Carter with the number of carry out orders. It isn’t a job she takes lightly, and that includes the music. While the music itself is only moderately loud, she, as is her wont, sings at the top of her lungs. Stu, the elder statesman of the group in his mid-fifties, declines to participate, but Carter, close to Kandra’s age and with similar tastes, harmonizes in a voice that’s just as loud.
I'll follow you anywhere Where you wanna go, yea I don't care Let the river drown all our fears If the pouring rain Washes you away I'll go with you babe**
None of the three hear the door creak open – Kandra keeps meaning to ask Walter to take a look at the hinges … then promptly forgets when they get busy with a deliver or some other order of business – or Rose’s shout. It takes Viv and her shrill whistle that can be heard over almost anything to finally catch their attention.
“Kan, someone out here to see you!” the willowy blonde calls as she walks back out.
With a sigh – such interruptions aren’t uncommon, but also aren’t welcome when she’s helping in the kitchen – she pulls up her omni-tool and buzzes Ben. Currently loading the vehicle in the back of the building, he comes running inside and takes over for her. “Back in a few,” she promises then wipes her hands on her apron and heads out into the front of the café.
Erin currently mans the front counter and at Kandra’s question points to a small table in the corner near one of the windows. She removes her apron and sets it on the shelf below the register before walking over. She also takes a moment to tuck a few loose strands of hair back behind her ears. As she nears, she notices the table is occupied by one person only; an older man, if the slight hint of grey in his dark hair is any indication. Broad shoulders, darker skin … it takes a moment for familiarity to hit her, but the mottle blues of his fatigues assure her he is from the Systems Alliance.
For half a second, three feet from the table, she freezes, breath caught in her chest. Kaidan! In the next instant, she relaxes. The likelihood of her twin having some trouble, military wise anyway, is unlikely due to the nature of his current assignment. She can’t help the smile that curves, thinking about it. Major Kaidan Alenko, commander of 1st Special Operations Biotics Company. It puts him half the world away, or at least it seems like it at times, but Kandra’s already thinking that later in the year she might take a week to go visit him in North Carolina. At least, she hopes he’s okay … surely, he can’t have been seriously hurt training other biotics …
Biting back a groan, she plasters her best welcoming smile on her face and takes the last three steps. “Hello. I’m Kandra, owner of K’s Kafe. I understand you asked for me?”
The man turns. Older, craggier features, but his eyes are sharp, intense, and she has to physically force herself to not retreat a few steps. But then he smiles, perhaps even smirks a little, just a hint of a laugh in the way his shoulders move. “So, you’re the other one,” he says, sitting back. “The resemblance is … remarkable.”
Kandra nods without thinking. Habit has her noting small details. His nearly empty coffee mug, spoon lying to the side face down on top of his napkin, light caramel in color, the small pitcher of cream down about a half inch. His plate once held one of their sandwich creations but now only holds only crumbs and a residual smear of buttermilk dressing on the side.
He gestures to the empty seat across from him. “Can you sit for a minute?”
She opens her mouth to reply, but that fear returns, for just a moment, and leaves her unexpectedly breathless. “I … let me get you a refill first,” she manages and reaches for his mug. He nods and she uses that time to return to the kitchen. Slowly, carefully, she breathes in and out, seeking her balance point. A wave of vertigo teases her and she knows it’s because her stress levels just skyrocketed.
She returns a few minutes later, fresh cup of coffee in hand for him and a glass of water for herself. Sliding into the spare seat, she offers a smile that she prays looks genuine though it feels like brittle glass upon her face. “How may I be of help?”
He doctors his coffee as he speaks; two sugars, quite a bit of cream. “Relax, Miss Alenko,” he murmurs quietly, his smile still in place. “Your brother is fine. In fact, he has nothing to do with my reason for being here.”
Kandra blinks in surprise and takes a sip of her water. The cold soothes her throat as it trickles down. “Really?”
He pushes his plate to the side and rests his hands on the table between them. “Really,” he insists.
She searches his face again. It’s a kind face, but one that, she thinks, is used to the hardships military life can offer. His uniform are the basic fatigues, though she notes he wears the stripes of an admiral.
In which I rant about Homestuck and Girls
I don’t hate the girls in Homestuck but I do hate how the fandom and even the source material handles them. I cannot stand how Nepeta is often reduced to this cutesy little girl who needs Equius to hold her hand, how Aradia’s personality is basically just straight-up ignored, or how Kanaya is sometimes either made the Mom Friend for gags or the Sexy Lesbian Vampire as if she has no other traits. I hate how Terezi and Feferi are treated like they did nothing wrong, as if Terezi didn’t get John KILLED on one timeline, and Fef’s ideals weren’t thinly veiled/rose-colored castism, and don’t even get me STARTED on Vriska.
I want to like Vriska, not only because I’m a Scorpio but because for the most part, she really is a badass, but she’s also a giant fucking bitch who never really faces the consequences of her actions. The closest we get is Tavros telling her off towards the end and even that is mild compared to her: Paralyzing him under the claims of making him stronger Murdering him later Making Sollux murder Aradia Blinding Terezi Using John to one-up Terezi (which Terezi also did with Dave which is kinda fucked on both their parts, like wtf)
True, she feels genuine remorse for killing Tavros but that doesn’t stop her from treating him like shit in the afterlife. And after all of this she STILL gets to be the hero of the story, she STILL gets to be the one thing that basically fixes the timeline, she ultimately gets what she wants and I hate it.
And then there’s Terezi; cool, cooky, I love her scalemates and her serious knowledge about Alternian law and loyalty to her friends but the way she (and Kanaya for that matter) lets herself get wrapped up in Vriska’s bullshit is so, ugh! Like I pointed out, her whole thing with Dave started out as a competition between her and Vriska (I think she even says as much? I’d have to go back and check) which is shitty because she literally fucking uses Dave’s own insecurities when it comes to John to push him forward at her pace. Granted, both her and Vris kinda ease up and turn it into a friendship with their respective humans but that doesn’t exactly excuse the behavior. (I’m not too happy that they both lead into relationships the more I think about it, even if they both eventually fell through. That’s just, that’s not a good way to start a relationship).
There’s already a comprehensive post about Feferi’s shit/possible shit.
And then you have Kanaya, Nepeta, and Aradia who basically get their personalities fuckin neutered by a good portion of the fandom. While the Mom Friend jokes can be funny with Kan, its overplay and kinda tiring though admittedly preferable to Diva persona I saw a lot of people give her in early fandom, and anyone who makes Nepeta into a weak, baby owo girl who needs Equius to protect her is gonna catch these hands because Nep has proved to be one of the strongest and most capable of the trolls; fucking Equius would take out your kneecaps if he heard you talking about her that way. And Aradia? Like shit, it's like some of y’all just completely ignored her after she godtiered. (I know her personality was present before that but after is when she really shined) She’s funky and weird and kinda creepy and I wish more people would like be into that you know? Like I wish she and Jake and Dave could have been friends because you know those three would have gotten into so much trouble together.
Which leads to the human girls and gods do I wanna scream. Rose’s more “dorky” interests like writing wizard stories, gaming (as she was the most excited of the four for sburb if memory serves me) are often ignored in favor of playing her off as the “cool gof GF”. She’s not cool, none of the Strilonds are actually cool in the common sense of the words, they’re all fucking dorks. She literally psychoanalysis her friends for fun and spends a whole page (2 pages?) butchering sports with Dave.
Jade, I found, was often dumbed down to the ditzy “blond” friend for a while, though I’m not sure if that still pervades her tag or not, but I have another beef with her that I’ll get to in a second.
Roxy is often toted as the end all be all of NonProblematic Kids when they have Emotionally Abused Dirk Almost killed Jane Acted like Jake was stupid (then again, most of his friends did) That’s not to say Roxy doesn’t TRY; they’re very aware of the harm they’ve caused to their friends and actively try to do better but that, like Terezi, that doesn’t mean you just get to ignore the shit they did.
And Jane, Christ, Jane. She gets kicked by the majority of the fandom and even her friends and few times but the moment she claps back or makes a mistake (like telling Roxy she liked them better when they were drunk), she gets dunked on by what feels like everyone and their mother. Yes, Jane can be shitty at times but considering Her crush basically manipulated her into the friendzone and then nonstop talked about his boyfriend problems for months (including on her OWN BIRTHDAY) She was fatshamed and sexually harrassed(?) by Caliborn Roxy blew up her computer which could have killed her Everything in general just going to shit Can you really blame her? Granted that doesn’t mean she should get away with the horrible things she’s said/done either like the aforementioned Roxy convo or, at least to some extent, her threats of sexual slavery against Jake.
Which brings me to my big issue I mentioned with Jade; What’s with the human girls getting their agency stolen? Grimdark/bark, Trickster, Crockertier?? Like seriously, wtf?? Granted, Trickster happened to all the alpha kids and they were mostly aware so that one’s a little grasping for straws but the others? Like wtf man???
#put under read more for length#feel free to reblog#I know Roxy is NB but they're part of the issue at hand
Cherry Syrup
"Kan," Rose sighed, grabbing her wife's wrist and pulling her hand away from her mouth, stopping her frantic chewing on her fingers. "She just has a cold, she's not dying."
Kanaya stared blankly at her wife, forming a worried scrunch of her face as she turned her gaze at their nine month old baby. She seemed peacefully sleeping in her crib, yes, but not that many hours ago she was crying as all hell broke loose; her nose congested as she scratched harshly at her throat, perhaps thinking the unbearable raspy feeling was on the outside of her skin.
The jadeblood practically had dropped anything she was busy handling, rushing to her daughter's rescue at the sound of her cry. Kanaya wouldn't stop cradling her close to her chest, like as if she was fragile to the touch, one slip up and she could break. It was also an important reason why their house was cozy and burning; Kanaya had suggested to crank up their heater, to fight off any other cold infections.
Rose furrowed her brows, bringing her wife in close, an attempt to distract her.
"Kanaya, darling, Lilith isn't the only member in this household that requires your affection..." Rose purred, running the pads of her fingers along Kanaya's forearm, languidly. Kanaya looked down at Rose, a surprised green blush sweeping her cheeks.
Rose leaned in, stepping onto her tippy toes to kiss her wife amorously, but came into contact with her ear instead.
The blonde reeled back, spitting and protruding out her tongue in disgust. She huffed at the way Kanaya craned her neck, gazing over their baby with such transfixed eyes. Now, Rose would never pin herself as jealous over something so small and so expected of babies to steal attention; however, her own daughter or not, Rose genuinely missed having Kanaya's full consideration and being the only entity in her world.
In defense, she supposed she was bit of a mother hen as well when Lilith was born, shadowing Kanaya's needs. Rose was about to blow a fuse if this was intentional revenge.
A soft cry emitted into the air as Kanaya gently picked the ill hybrid up, rocking her in her arms. Rose frowned at the display.
"As endearing as it is, to see you care for our child, that doesn't take away my demands to get you in bed." Rose muttered, causing Kanaya to scowl at her wife's statement.
"Rose, Lilith needs us, she's fallen sick." Kanaya reminded, positioning her baby's head up on her shoulder. Rose sighed dejectedly, looking into Lilith's pale green eyes, beginning to feel exhausted.
As the night went on, Kanaya never dared to put down Lilith, going as far as settling the hybrid in between her and Rose, comfortable on their bed.
Lilith tucked her head underneath Kanaya's chin, the jadeblood in turn curling around her and slipping an arm under Rose's neck.
Rose gazed at the ceiling, her eyes drooping but the idea of sleeping at the moment apparently didn't appeal to Rose's system, not just yet, weirdly. A sudden weight added at her feet made Rose perk up quickly, finding a portly cream cat mewling quietly, his fur sticking up in all different directions, like as if he'd been shocked by lightning. He began padding to Rose, earning a scratch on his fuzzy head when he was in arm's reach.
The cat glanced beside himself, bristling when he saw Lilith had taken his favourite spot on their bed.
"I'm sorry, my dear Cthulhu, but it appears your less furry sister has claimed her spot on our bed." Rose chuckled, petting him all the way to the tip of his white tail as he jumped off the bed, meowing in irritation.
The night didn't sail smoothly following Cthulhu's visit, however. Rose only got an hour of sleep, before Lilith wailed and wriggled between them, requiring her mothers care.
Rose groaned, shifting up onto her elbow, and carefully observing as Lilith tried rolling around.
"Come here, Lily." Rose murmured, sliding her arms around her daughter and leisurely bringing her close, cradling her with tender movements, in hopes that it'd calm Lilith down.
But it didn't work a scant! Lilith started balling with every power of her voice, clutching onto Rose's black shirt and tugging at it. It was a surprise Kanaya managed to still slumber; though, Rose was always a light sleeper, one little creak and her eyelids would fly up. This only made Rose stressful, growing increasingly worried at her daughter's sobbing that didn't seem to want to slow down, like she was in horrible pain and there was nothing Rose could do to fix it.
Suddenly, Lilith's cries halted, making Rose's palms sweat as she anticipated the reason why tears hung at the corners of her eyes. The hybrid emitted a gurgling sound, causing Rose to stare quizzically, and without a clear warning, vomit flew out of Lilith's mouth, landing squarely on the the purple colored letters of her signature lovingly sewed on her shirt.
Rose cringed, holding Lilith at a distance as she sucked in a sharp breath, gagging internally at the sight of baby bile sticking to her favourite shirt.
She didn't how she was going to remove her shirt without the vomit touching her skin; it made her shudder as goosebumps crawled on her skin.
Rose turned her purple gaze up at Lilith, a bit of blots of the rotten waste stayed on her chin, tears noticeably beginning to pile up.
"Lily, it's okay, you're okay," Rose hurried, trying to comfort her after retching for the first time and grabbing the end of her shirt and wiping away the streaks. Her shirt was already ruined and drenched in throw up, anyways. "You're going to be okay, Lilith. It's uncomfortable and disgusting, yes, but it's normal."
Lilith squirmed in her hands, flailing her arms around, locks of her black hair gluing to her forehead from sweat. Her loud chirps and sobs eventually stirred Kanaya, the jadeblood moaning as she lazily sat up, rubbing her eyes before they worked properly.
"Lilith, what..." Kanaya paled, spotting the bile splattered on Rose's chest. "Dear god, what happened?"
"Lilith threw up." Rose reported, grimacing when her eyes drifted off to the mess. Kanaya gasped, quickly prying Lilith away from her mother and holding her tight, cooing lightly.
"Oh, my poor darling," Kanaya crooned, letting her cowlick caress Lilith's cheek as she swiped her slender hand down the hybrid's silky hair.
Lilith let out a chorus of 'mamamama', making Rose develop a jealous nerve, due to Lilith wanting to be in Kanaya's hold. It was quickly shafted, though, as a burping akin noise retched from Lilith, both Rose and Kanaya's stomach dropped.
"Lilith, shhh, no more crying," Kanaya soothed, massaging her troll pointed ears. "If you stop crying profusely, you'll stop being nauseated."
"I think we have some medicine stored, we can give her that." Rose said, pulling at her shirt, carefully slipping it off in the most awkward pattern, revealing her violet tank top.
"I suppose that'll help remedy for now," Kanaya sighed, handing Lilith over to Rose, picking up her wife's dirtied shirt with her thumb and pointer finger pinching it. "I'll put this wash, meanwhile you can give her the medicine."
Rose nodded, the couple both rising from bed but going separate ways. Lilith laid her tiny head on Rose's shoulder, the blonde sighing through her nose and tickling her fringe.
"Oh, Lilith." Rose whispered, planting a kiss against the hybrid's fiery forehead.
Entering the dining area and scavenging for the cherry flavored liquid, she retrieved it from the pantry, tenderly settling Lilith on the counter before grabbing a small spoon, one that's usually for when they stir their tea. Tonight was an exception, though, Lilith certainly wouldn't handle gulping the medicine from a spoon too large for her mouth; which just meant she'd have to take three sips of it from a tiny spoon instead.
Pouring the cherry red medicine onto the spoon, she carefully observed as she swished it along to Lilith, positioning it at the hybrid's mouth.
"Open your mouth, little love," Rose said, frowning when Lilith shook her head.
"It'll make you feel better, Lilith."
The hybrid made a series of unsure noises, whimpering shortly before the spoon forcefully went into her mouth. The strong aftertaste hit Lilith immediately, gagging and darting her tongue out.
Rose giggled, serving another tablespoon and hovering it near her mouth. "Just two more, Lilith."
Lilith crossed her arms, puffing her light gray chubby cheeks and turning her head away.
"Oh, no you don't little missy." Rose caught her chin, opening up her mouth to showcase her gummy maw, white little things sprouting at the back of her mouth. She made Lilith slurp the cherry medicine by force once more, making the hybrid growl; it was anything but intimidating, small sounding and cute, like hearing a puppy's growl as it plays tug-of-war with your slipper.
"One more spoon and it's done, you'll soon feel better by tomorrow morning, hopefully." Rose said ideally, pouring the red liquid onto the spoon. As she moved the spoon towards Lilith, by her surprise, the hybrid hurriedly drank it down, holding onto the silver handle and hastily pulling away.
Lilith emitted a 'bleh', showing Rose just how appalled she was from the taste of the medicine. Rose simply giggled, putting away the cherry medicine and throwing the spoon into the sink, later to be washed.
"Yeah, bleh," Rose parroted, smooching her forehead. "You should be feeling lucky, Lilith, my mother would make me swallow pills that were a little too big for my throat."
The sound of steps echoed throughout the house, alerting Rose and Lilith of Kanaya's presence.
As before, Lilith squealed a series of jumbled 'mama's. Kanaya smiled at her daughter's ecstatic attitude, swooping her up into her arms, and leaving a kiss mark on her temple.
"I see you're feeling better again, starlight?" Kanaya murmured, earning Lilith to nuzzle up against her.
Feeling arms suddenly wrapping around her waist, Kanaya glanced down over her shoulder, Rose smirking with such charming senses. There was never a time where Rose failed to sweep her off her feet with just one look that harbored adoration.
Kanaya snickered, purring quite loudly and rhythmically when Rose laid her head on her shoulder, her breath tickling her neck. Kanaya sighed contently, kissing her wife chastely on her cheek, a smile plying on Rose's lips as she dug her nose into the crook of her beloved jadeblood's neck.
Nampō Roku, Book 4 (24.2): Four Arrangements for the Dashi-fuzukue [出文机] (Tsuke-shoin [付書院]), Part 2; and Rikyū’s Brief Closing Remarks.
[The writing reads (from right to left): bachi (バチ)¹; tanzaku・suzuri-bako (短尺・硯箱)²; kore ha sukiya no katte-shoin nado ni, chika-goro konna mo suru, ji-yū yoshi (コレハスキヤノ勝手書院ナトニ、近來如此モスル、自由ヨシ)³; dora (トラ)⁴; kasho・ryōshi (哥書・料紙)⁵.]
[The writing reads (from the right): shimoku (シモク)⁶; suzuri・ryōshi (硯・料紙)⁷; un-pan (雲版)⁸; ko-kabin (小花瓶)⁹.]
_________________________
¹Bachi (バチ).
This is the striker for a gong. It consists of a relatively short wooden haft, to which a round, ball-like head (usually made of leather secured at the neck over a ball of twine, for the necessary resilience).
As with the kanshō [喚鐘] (which was mentioned in the previous post), the gong was struck with the bachi while the host sat on the floor in front of the dashi-fuzukue.
²Tanzaku・suzuri-bako [短尺・硯箱].
A tanzaku・suzuri-bako [短冊硯箱] is a rather elongated* sort of suzuri-bako, with a lower compartment in which tanzaku [短冊] (poetry cards) could be stored.
The box for the tanzaku is shown on the left, and the lid is on the right. Above the rather elongated suzuri is a silver mizu-ire [水入]. The lid is usually tied on with a pair of cords that are attached to small kan [鐶] near the bottom of the box (the cords are not shown in this photo). ___________ *Tanzaku are usually 1-shaku 2-sun long, and 2-sun wide, and the box would have had to be perhaps 1-sun larger than this in order to allow the tanzaku to be removed easily.
³Kore ha sukiya no katte-shoin nado ni, chika-goro kon-na mo suru, ji-yū yoshi [コレハスキヤノ勝手書院ナトニ、近來如此モスル、自由ヨシ].
Kore ha sukiya no katte-shoin nado ni [コレハスキヤノ勝手書院ナトニ]: a katte-shoin is a construction more commonly seen in the early sukiya [数奇屋] (a wabi-style tearoom -- in this case, a 4.5-mat room with a 6-shaku toko, with a dashi-fuzukue on one side of it*).
Chika-goro konna mo suru [近來如此モスル]: chika-goro [近來]† means “at this time,” “in the present,” “recently;” konna mo suru [如此も爲る] means “it is still done like this.”
Ji-yū yoshi [自由ヨシ]: ji-yū [自由] means “to do as one likes”: thus, “it is appropriate to do as one feels best.”
The dora [銅鑼]‡ was more commonly used in the wabi-sukiya, rather than in the more formal shoin (where the gakki [樂器] were usually percussion instruments originally used in the temple setting). ___________ *We must remember that the Shū-un-an documents with which these sketches were associated dated from the beginning of Jōō’s public career. The small room did not appear until 1554; prior to that time, the sukiya was always a 4.5-mat room, with a 6-shaku toko.
†It is also important to keep in mind that these kaki-ire [書入] were added to the sketches sometime after Jitsuzan presented his copy of the Nampō Roku to the Enkaku-ji. Thus “chika-goro” refers to sometime during the eighteenth century (or after -- it is not clear precisely when these notes were added, though some speculate it was during Jitsuzan’s lifetime, when the secret discussions on the way to interpret these drawings were beginning).
‡The dora [銅鑼] was first used by ships as a sort of fog-horn -- to announce their presence (and intended entry into port) during foggy weather. They were, thus, much more “humble” than the percussion instruments that were created to be played in the temple, to accompany the chanting of prayers.
⁴Dora [トラ].
The dora [銅鑼] is a gong. The sketch shows a Chinese nipple-gong. The face of Korean gongs was usually flat (though sometimes incised with concentric circles to indicate the center). The sound of the two are similar -- though more care has to be taken to hit the Korean gong in the center, since otherwise the sound will be discordant†.
It is said that the Chinese gongs were originally made for ships to announce their approach to the harbor -- since the deep sound carries well in fog*.
The similarity of the sound of a dora to a temple bell heard at a distance was noted very early (probably already on the continent, among the townsmen followers of wabi‡, long before chanoyu was brought to Japan), so that the way to play the gong was intended to imitate the sound of a temple bell (and its echo). ___________ *Many of the antique dora that appeared in Japan during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are said to have been brought from the Philippines, where the natives were apparently using them as war-shields. However, the aborigines are not known to have possessed bronze-making abilities at that time; and these gongs seem to have come into their possession as a result of the wrecks of Chinese shipping in their territories.
Japanese-based merchants from Sakai and Hakata began to visit the Philippines during the fifteenth and sixteenth century, to trade with the Europeans, in addition to their port calls in other East and Southeast Asian countries.
Korean gongs seem to have originated as instruments intended to scare away malicious influences during purification rituals. Thus their ability to produce audibly disturbing sounds was considered a benefit.
‡These people seemed to admire the spiritual aspect of things like chanoyu, though they were not monks. Playing the gong so that it resembled a temple bell was, therefore, a sort of fiction. This is an attitude that deeply influenced the development of wabi tea.
⁵Ka-sho・ryōshi [哥書・料紙].
A ka-sho [歌書]* is a book of poems.
Ryōshi [料紙] is writing paper. Possibly just one or two pieces, folded in half, to keep the book from coming into direct contact with the surface of the desk (which might have dust or ink residue present that could damage the book). ___________ *Ka-sho [哥書] is a rather inelegant abbreviation, though this form is commonly found in machi-shū writings. It is difficult to believe that it was ever used in Jōō’s authentic writings.
—————————————————-—————————————————
Shibayama Fugen begins by noting that the present arrangement of the dashi-fuzukue would be appropriate for an uta-kai [歌會], or a renga-kai [連歌會], or a gathering of that sort*.
The dora is suspended from a hook attached to the middle of the ceiling above the dashi-fuzukue. The bachi [撥] is suspended on the side of the writing desk closest to the katte (in other words, the opposite side from where the tokonoma is located).
A tanzaku・suzuri-bako [短冊硯箱] is shown on the right, and ka-sho [歌書]† (a book of poetry) is shown, resting on a piece of ryōshi, on the left. The object resting on top of the book is a bun-chin [文鎮]‡. ___________ *Kono kazari ha uta-kai, renga-kai nado no kazari naru-beshi [此ノ飾ハ歌会、連歌会ナドノ飾ナルベシ].
An uta-kai [歌会] is a poetry competition, where two teams compete with each other, proposing verses according to a specific series of topics; a renga-kai [連歌会] is a linked-verse competition, where the contestants utilize part of the preceding participant’s verse to create a new one, with the purpose being to create a single, long poem of a certain number of links.
†A ka-sho [歌書] is a book of poems.
‡A bun-chin [文鎮] is a paperweight. While a generic sort of bun-chin (a long bar of polished brass, with a small knob by means of which it can be handled) is shown in the sketch, more fanciful shapes were also common -- and likely would have been used, if available, and if the shape were appropriate to the occasion.
——————————————–———-—————————————————
⁶Shimoku [シモク].
Shimoku [シモク] appears to be a miscopying of the word shumoku [シュモク = 撞木], probably because the original manuscript was already in a poor state of preservation when Jitsuzan took his copy. The sketch may be reconstructed as follows.
The shumoku is a mallet-shaped striker, used to sound the un-pan [雲版] while the host remains seated in front of the dashi-fuzukue.
The shumoku used for an un-pan has a shorter handle, and a broader head than the one used to sound the kanshō. This kind of shumoku is sometimes suspended (upside-down) from a loop of cord inserted through the hole in the handle (and some of the versions of this sketch show that orientation).
⁷Suzuri・ryōshi [硯・料紙].
A suzuri [硯] (ink stone), displayed on top of a packet of ryōshi [料紙] (writing paper) that has been folded in half.
⁸Un-pan [雲版].
An un-pan [雲版] is a rather flat, bronze percussion instrument, which produces a sound somewhere between a gong and a pair of cymbals (depending on the size and shape). As the name suggests, it is more or less cloud-shaped.
The un-pan is not usually flat, but generally has a recurved rim (the deeper the rim, the more gong-like the sound). This was another of the traditional Buddhist instruments installed in the bell-hall along with the large bell, drum, and wooden gong. (These instruments were usually played by the monks at dawn and dusk, as the sun rose above, or slipped below, the horizon.)
Like the kanshō, it, too, was played by striking with a wooden mallet.
⁹Ko-kabin [小花瓶].
A small flower-vase, such as Rikyū’s treasured Tsuru-no-hito-koe [鶴ノ一聲]*, shown below.
The word ko-kabin specifically refers to a vase that was much too small to hold a formal rikka [立華] style arrangement.
Only a single flower (or a small twig)† could be placed in this kind of hanaire -- and, indeed, the flowers as arranged in a ko-kabin were the precedent for the “cha-bana” [茶花]‡. ___________ *Early sources give the original name as Tsuru-no-hashi [鶴ノ波子] (which describes the pattern of waves around the foot of the hanaire). Rikyū changed its name to memorialize an episode that seems to have occurred in the 1570s.
†Rather than being considered to be a “flower arrangement,” this kind of thing was usually done as a way to appreciate the flower in question. For example, a small branch of plum blossoms would be placed in this kind of vase so that the color and fragrance could be enjoyed close at hand.
‡In Chinese, cháhuā [茶花] refers to the late autumn- and winter-flowering forms of the camellia, as well as those cultivars of the tea plant that are grown for their attractive flowers. The former are all hybrids between the true camellia (Camellia japonica), which flowers in the spring, and the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) -- which can flower at any time of the year, but predominantly in the early autumn. Some of these are ancient, natural hybrids (and so appear to us to be purely camellias, rather than hybrids), while others are what the Japanese refer to as sazanka [山茶花] (Camellia sasanqua). According to the Japanese horticultural definition, tsubaki [椿] (the “true” camellias) are distinguished from the sazanka by the fact that sazanka loose their petals one by one, while tsubaki drop the entire corolla as a unit. While this is valid in first generation hybrids, complex natural hybrids often behave more like camellias than their tea parent.
Be that as it may, classical references dating to the Ming dynasty times (and possibly earlier), speak of Chinese connoisseurs of tea drinking who would display a twig of the tea plant, when in bloom, in such small vases on their desks or tea tables, and it was apparently from this practice that the tradition of cha-bana developed.
——————————————————————————————————
Shibayama Fugen explains that the kane employed in this sketch are exactly the same as in the previous example.
The un-pan is suspended from the ceiling on the central kane; and the suzuri and flower-vase stand on the right-most and left-most kane, respectively.
==============================================
[Rikyū’s concluding remarks¹:]
Migi ichi-ran mōshi-sōrō shoin-kazari ika-hodo mo shina ōku sōrae-domo, korera no wakare ni te ichi-dan koto ka mōsu majiku sōrō [右一覧申候書院飾いか程も品多く候得共、此等之分にて一段事欠申間敷候]².
Kashiku [かしく]³.
Sōeki han [宗易判]⁴.
Nambō [南坊]⁵.
_________________________
¹This title is not present in the original. These remarks simply follow the last sketch.
²“Having read through the foregoing, [I am amazed at] the great number of arrangements for the shoin [that you have collected together]. But for all your understanding of these things, there is still so much more that you do not [yet understand].”
³Kashiku [かしく] is a traditional, standard -- albeit somewhat effete -- closing for letters and things of that sort. It is usually translated* “sincerely yours,” or “respectfully yours.”
Shibayama Fugen’s teihon [底本] has kashiko [かしこ], but this is simply another form of the same greeting. ___________ *The actual meaning would depend on the kanji with which the expression is written -- ranging from auspicious wishes, to fear (of having given offense). Traditionally this term seems to have been used by women -- and affected by the excessively effete chajin of the old capital during the Edo period.
Rikyū’s authentic writings are never signed in this way.
⁴Sōeki han [宗易判] means Sōeki’s name-seal. Perhaps his stylized signature (kaō [花押]) was written here.
⁵Nambō [南坊], Nambō Sōkei [南坊宗啓; ? ~ 1594], the purported recipient of these comments.
The closing suggests that Sōkei presented a collection of documents to Rikyū for his review, and his comment was that while the collection is exhaustive, there is still much that Sōkei does not know. This is the way that the first six books of the Nampō Roku end.
These concluding remarks are assumed to have been fabricated by Tachibana Jitsuzan, though it is entirely possible that one of the other parties who had accessed the Shū-un-an documents between 1595 and 1680 (agents of the Edo bakufu, and representatives of the Sen family) might have added these remarks -- to disguise the actual origins of this material. This was because it was at this time that efforts were being made to discredit both Jōō and Furuta Sōshitsu, in favor of Rikyū (since, in the absence of access to Rikyū’s actual teachings -- the result of the damnatio memoriae imposed by Hideyoshi, and furthered by the efforts of the machi-shū under Imai Sōkyu, who attempted to restore chanoyu to its state during Jōō’s middle period -- his importance and influence had to be demonstrated somewhere, and this was most easily accomplished by stating that many of the practices that were known to have started in the sixteenth century, actually originated with him). Thus, most of what we commonly understand to be the achievements of Rikyū today, were actually things begun by Jōō and Oribe (even when those practices were could also be confirmed as having been indulged in by Rikyū himself).
It a complicated issue, and there is no easy answer. But let have a discussion about it to try and find a workable solution. I sure Tony is a very pleasant fella and just want more peace and love in the world, but pretending there isn a problem isn going to make it go away.. My roommate had a tinder girl over one night. They had just finished a movie, which as we all know is a pivotal point on a tinder date (are you staying over or leaving). I was loving every second as the awkward tension rose, then she suggests we watch funny YouTube videos. He never thinks about an actual solution to anything in society. He just wants to kill everyone he hates.TributeToStupidity 2 points submitted 7 days agoMy favorite small part that I've posted before: Wayne believes that watership down is about the 장수출장안마 kandra.In AoL he talks about being confused by a book about a bunch of talking bunnies on a boat. Later in BoM when he meets with the kandra who gives them the mission (can't remember his name) he immediately asks if kandra could transform into bunnies. Around the same time, major advancements were being made in the production of nail polish. Prior to the 1920s, nail care consisted of buffing one's nails, and buying a car meant purchasing a black one from Henry Ford. Ford used black lacquer paint on his vehicles because it dried more quickly than other colors, but other companies begin formulating fast drying lacquer paints in multiple colors to compete. Currently, there is no research that clearly indicates what you eat will lead to acne, although there may be some associations between food and pimples that need more study. One potential trouble maker is milk, although it's unclear whether breakouts are related to hormones in our milk (remember, we know that hormonal changes cause breakouts) or something else. Another hypothesis is that the Western diet, which is a diet where refined carbohydrates and processed foods are well represented and fresh fruits and vegetables are not, may be another potential trouble maker. Hey! We are almost identical in skin tone and I consider myself a cool olive. I have the same issue of my neck/chest being lighter than my face (although I do think this is mostly because I have hyperpigmentation) so I usually have to blend the foundation down my neck. The best foundation match I found is UD Naked Skin in 4.0 with an added drop of Temptu green foundation adjuster. And they gave 장수출장안마 me a bowl cut because I asian. I pretty sure it because the salon was all small town white ladies. I dont want to look stereotypically asian." She kept saying "oh dont worry", and she kept on going shorter and more bowl cutlike, even though I kept repeating for her to stop with that style. Creatine helps you train harder and is great for increasing muscle size and increasing strength during your workouts. Nitric Oxide is also great for increasing muscle size, increasing pumps in the gym, and it increases vascularity. In fact nitric oxide is one of my favorite supplements as it naturally exists in the body, and taking it has a profound effect on your performance at the gym. In the morning, the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada. I don trust her. [:nl]“The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.” Deze zin is de eerste zin in een van mijn favoriete boekenseries “De Donkere Toren” van Stephen King. Toen ik dus deze naam zag in de forums tijdens een random zoektocht sprong die me gewoon tegemoet en moest ik gaan kijken naar wat voor machine InsolentGnome gemaakt heeft die hij het waard vond de naam “The Gunslinger” te geven. Dit artikel gaat over “The Gunslinger” gemaakt door InsolentGnome.
Content:
De hoofdpersoon in het eerste boek “The Gunslinger” is een man die niet zomaar is te omschrijven, het heeft zelfs een schrijver als Stephen King vele boeken gekost om ons zelfs maar een beetje een idee te geven van het enorm complexe personage dat Roland is. De vele facetten van zijn ego en de persoonlijke groei die dit personage doorgaat op weg naar het eind van de Donmkere Toren boekenreeks is simpelweg te overweldigend groot om hier in dit artikel uit te leggen. Ik heb dan ook het grootste respect voor InsolentGnome dat hij het aandurft een naam als deze te verbinden aan een enkele CaseMod.
De diverse delen die in deze “The Gunslinger” zijn gegaan zijn allemaal rechtstreeks genomen uit de boeken, van de Hoorn, het Pistool en het leer, tot aan zelfs de kleur keuzes elk deeltje heeft net als de Donkere Toren boeken serie diverse lagen die je pas echt begint te waarderen naar mate je het meer en meer leest. Mensen die bekend zijn met Stephen King’s werk weten dat hij graag laag op laag op laag maakt en die vervolgens weer helemaal omgooit op het moment dat je denkt het door te hebben. Met de recente remake van IT en de komende Donkere Toren film is de aandacht voor zijn boeken sterker dan ooit nu de oudere generaties de boeken herbezoeken en de jongere generaties kennis maken met deze geweldige schrijver. Een CaseMod als deze is dan ook een zeer logische stap voor een fan van Roland en zijn Ka-tet. Mocht ik overigens iets schrijven in dit artikel waarbij je geen idee hebt wat ik bedoel: Lees eens een Boek ;)
“The Gunslinger” is een donkere toren Case waarin diverse attributen het verhaal navertellen van enkele van de meest opmerkelijke onderdelen in de boeken. Vooral het Pistool is een zeer belangrijk onderdeel, de hoofdpersoon is namelijk de laatste der scherpschutters en leeft geheel naar de wetten die in zijn training zijn opgenomen. Net als de oude ridderordes worden de scherpschutters gezien als de dolende gerechtigheid die het beste voor behoort te hebben met de wereld. Het feit dat in deze CaseMod het pistool zo’n prominente plek inneemt is dus een mooi stukje verwijzing naar dit aspect in de boeken.
De hoorn die bovenin “The Gunslinger” hangt is de Hoorn van Eld, een hoorn die, hoewel deze gedurende de gehele boekenreeks steeds genoemd word, het belang van deze Hoorn pas geheel op het “Eind” van de serie bekend gemaakt word. Ik durf niet te zeggen of InsolentGnome deze Hoorn om deze zelfde reden bovenin de Case gehangen heeft, maar symboliek is het wel. De sfeer en uitstraling van het verhaal is die van een western, wat de keuze voor leer in de Case zeer goed verklaard. Echter kan je zelfs de diverse stukjes techniek zoals het moederbord toch zien als onderdeel van de verwijzingen naar de boeken zien, gezien de wereld(en) waarin “The Gunslinger” zich afspeelt ook her en der diverse sci-fi elementen laat zien waarin technologische elementen uit diverse tijden hun opwachting maken (charlie the choo-choo iemand?)
Het mooiste stukje in deze gehele CaseMod vind ik de bovenzijde van de Case. Op de bovenzijde van “The Gunslinger” vinden we een enkele roos. Over deze roos kan ik heel lang doorgaan, maar het enige dat ik je zal zeggen is: Dit stukje op deze CaseMod is geweldig!
“Richt niet met je hand. Hij die met zijn hand richt is het gezicht van zijn vader vergeten. Richt met je oog. Schiet niet met je hand. Hij die met zijn hand schiet is het gezicht van zijn vader vergeten. Schiet met je geest. Dood niet met je geweer. Hij die met zijn geweer doodt is het gezicht van zijn vader vergeten. Dood met je hart.”[:en]“The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.” This is the first sentence in one of my favorite book series of all time, written by Stephen King. So you can imagine that when I noticed this name in the forum during a random search for something to write about, I simply was compelled to find out what kind of machine InsolentGnome built and why he thought it deserves the name: “The Gunslinger” This article is about “The Gunslinger” created by InsolentGnome.
Content:
The Protagonist in the first book “The Gunslinger” is a man who will not be defined with ease, it took a writer like Stephen King a lot of books to even give us a small glimpse into the vast complexity of the character named Roland. The many facets of his ego and the personal growth this character underwent on his journey towards the end of the Dark Tower books is simply too massive to be fully described in an article such as this. With this in mind, I have the greatest respect for InsolentGnome for attempting to connect a name such as this to a single CaseMod.
The various parts that have gone into “The Gunslinger” have all been taken directly from the books, such as the Horn, The Pistol, the Leather, up to even the choice of color, every part combines to create the same layer upon layer upon layer style storytelling that the books have. People who are familiar with Stephen King’s work know he generates lots of layers to a single story and tends to topple the entire tower of layers at the exact moment when you think you have the story figured out. With the recent remake of IT and the coming Dark Tower movie, attention for the books has yet again come back to enormous heights, where older generations revisit the books, younger generations get acquainted with this amazing writer. A CaseMod such as this is in that aspect a very logical continuation for a fan of Roland and his Ka-tet. By the way, should I write anything in this article that you have no clue about what I mean: Go read a book ;)
“The Gunslinger” is a Dark tower Case in which various attributes re-tell the story of some of the more significant parts in the books. Especially the Pistol is a very important piece, the main character is the last of the gunslingers and lives entirely by the laws which have been imprinted onto him by his training. Just like the old orders of knights the gunslingers are seen as the wandering justice who should have the best interest for the world(s) in mind. The fact that the Pistol takes up such a prominent space in the Case is a very nice symbol for this aspect in the books.
The horn which hangs in the top of “The Gunslinger” is the Horn of Eld, a horn which even though mentioned throughout the entire series of books, its importance only fully matures at the very end of the series. I dare not say whether InsolentGnome hung this Horn for the same reason in the top of the Case, but the symbolism doesn’t elude me. The feel and appearance of the story are of a western variety, which justifies the choice for leather in this Case greatly. You could, however, make a similar argument for the tech in this Case such as the motherboard, since the world(s) in which “The Gunslinger” plays out there are also bits and pieces of technology scattered everywhere, which show sci-fi elements of various era’s which will eventually have a huge impact on the story (Charlie the Choo-Choo anyone?)
The most beautiful piece in this entire CaseMod I find to be the top of the Case. On the topside of “The Gunslinger”, we find a single solitary rose. I could go on and on about this rose, but the only thing I will say is this: This part of the CaseMod is AMAZING!
Kansas woman weaves wheat into artwork
ROSE HILL, Kan. – From her studio in Butler County, Marian Vavra works with wheat the way a sculptor uses clay.
“I love the feel of it. I love its color,” said Vavra, as she showed off a bundle of dried wheat. “There’s this rustle kind of sound to it, which is beautiful at harvest time. It’s spiritual actually.”
So inspired by the golden crop nearly 40 years ago, she asked a farmer for a sample.
“He looked at me and looked down at my scissors and said, ‘Honey, you take as much as you want out of that field!’”
From a book and a kit, Marian learned to cut, dry and clean the wheat, then weave it into delicate designs.
Now, she is the teacher, demonstrating her techniques to kids and adults in classes and workshops.
To make a harvest angel, she begins with straw that’s soaked in warm water to make it pliable – then bundles several heads of wheat to make the skirt of the angel.
Then come the smaller pieces.
“So I’m actually going to plait, and plaiting means to braid or to intertwine,” said Marian.
Her fingers move quickly among several stalks of wheat, making a loop that will be the angel’s arms.
Next are the wings, which must be the same size and a mirror image of each other.
Once they are finished, Marian assembles the angel and bends some longer stalks into a halo of hair, tying it all up with thread.
It’s a basic design that still demands patience and precision.
While a harvest angel might take Marian an hour to make, an Easter cross displayed on her wall took about two months’ work, or 100 hours.
It features a technique called cloisonne, where intricate details are applied to the paper background the cross is mounted on.
Her elaborate crosses and other creations are not just an expression of her faith, but are made to be family heirlooms, even memorials to lost loved ones.
She’s also passing on the legacy of wheat weaving that dates back hundreds of years.
“I have had my hands on pieces from the 1600’s,” said Marian.
So as the golden color of her artwork deepens over time, perhaps the meaning does, too.
“This is one reason I love our Kansas wheat,” said Marian. “It’s so beautiful.”
Even spiritual, for a farm girl turned artist, who puts her heart in every finishing touch.
You can find Marian’s artwork at these stores around Kansas:
Maxine’s – 4737 E. Douglas, Wichita Exploration Place’s Explore Store – 300 N. McLean Blvd, Wichita Kansas Museum of History – 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka Kansas State Capitol Visitors Center – 300 SW 10th Street, Topeka
She has also written a book about wheat weaving, Celebrating the Cross, that is sold at Courtyard Gallery, 125 N. Main, in Lindsborg.
The Most Beautiful Eco-Friendly Looks Celebrities Have Worn on the Red Carpet
New Post has been published on https://www.claritymakeupartistry.com/the-most-beautiful-eco-friendly-looks-celebrities-have-worn-on-the-red-carpet/
The Most Beautiful Eco-Friendly Looks Celebrities Have Worn on the Red Carpet
Emma Watson made headlines in 2015 when she agreed to the Green Carpet Challenge, a promise that each of her red carpet looks from that year would be sustainable. Since then, many celebrities, including Lupita Nyong’o and Margot Robbie, have followed in Watson’s footsteps by wearing eco-friendly and promoting an ethical, sustainable future in fashion.
And with Padma Lakshmi’s recent recycled look at the 2018 Emmys, it doesn’t look like the movement is slowing down any time. Ahead, we’ve collected the most beautiful eco-friendly looks celebrities have worn on the red carpet. From those made of plastic water bottles to those made of repurposed fabric, these looks are easy on the eyes and the environment.
Emma Watson
Watson is one of the most powerful voices in the sustainable-fashion movement. Each of the actor’s looks from her Beauty and the Beast press tour in 2017 were made of eco-friendly materials. But Watson first made headlines for her eco-chic passion in 2016 when she attended the Met Gala in a Calvin Klein gown made from recycled water bottles. The look, which was worn as a part of the Green Carpet Challenge, included pants, a full skirt and an off-the-shoulder bodice.
“That’s really the issue that we have with fashion, that people are buying clothes and throwing them away after wearing them twice, filling land[fills], creating unsafe working conditions. Destroying the planet, essentially.” Watson told Coveteur.
Naomie Harris
For the 2013 Oscars, Harris took part in the Red Carpet Green Dress challenge by wearing a gown made of organic silk crepe de chine. The look was embroidered with recycled zippers, vintage glass beads and chocolate candy wrappers. The fabric was also dyed with goldenrod and chamomile—two substances that don’t contain chemical pollutants. It was designed by Ghana-born fashion student Michael Badger (who was mentored by Vivienne Westwood) and was inspired by volcanos and flowing lava.
Cate Blanchett
Blanchett made a statement at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival when she outfit-repeated her black Armani Privé gown. The actor, who wore the dress at the festival’s arrivals dinner, recycled it from the 2014 Golden Globes to promote eco-friendly fashion.
“From couture to T-shirts, landfills are filled with garments that have been unnecessarily discarded,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Particularly in today’s climate, it seems willful and ridiculous that such beautiful garments are not cherished and reworn for a lifetime.”
Gisele Bündchen
Bündchen has long been an advocate for the environment, so it makes sense that she wore a sustainable dress to the 2018 Met Gala. The model, who has participated in the Green Carpet Challenge in the past, wore a gold Versace dress made with 100-percent GOTS certified organic silk and cotton. (GOTs stands for Global Organic Textile Standard.) The dress was also free of toxic chemicals and was dyed ecologically. The zipper was also colorant-free and made of lead and nickel.
For the 2016 Oscars, Cole wore a silver Vivienne Westwood gown made completely out of recycled water bottles. “Leaving for the Oscars! Wearing a dress made of plastic bottles by Vivienne Westwood #rcgd,” Cole wrote in the caption of an Instagram of her in the dress. Her hashtag nods to Red Carpet Green Dress, another organization urging celebrities to dress sustainably.
Lupita Nyong’o
Nyong’o was one of three actors at the 2016 Met Gala to dress in eco-friendly Calvin Klein looks. The actor walked the red carpet in a sequin gown with velvet straps, which she wore as a part of the Green Carpet Challenge.
Margot Robbie
Like Nyong’o and Watson, Robbie also participated in the Green Carpet Challenge in 2016. The actor wore a white Calvin Klein dress to the 2016 Met Gala with cutouts and zippers made from recycled plastic. The dress itself was made out of organic silk.
Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.
Padma Lakshmi
Lakshmi was one of the most recent celebrities to go green on the red carpet when she rewore her J. Mendel gown to the 2018 Emmys. The actor previously wore the dress in October 2017 to Vogue India’s Women of the Year Awards in Mumbai. “I’m excited to wear this beautiful J. Mendel dress again,” she told People. “I think in this day and age we should stop sending the message to young women and girls that we all have these endless closets of clothes we never wear more than once, especially on a red carpet. The hours that it takes, the artisans’ labor and the gorgeous fabrics all deserve to be worn again and treasured. It seems wasteful not to enjoy these dresses.”
Photo: Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images.
Julianne Moore
Not only was Moore’s black dress at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival sustainable, but so were her jewels. The actor, who wore the look at the Yomeddine, wore ethical jewelry from Chopard. The jewels, including a necklace and rings, were from Chopard’s Journey to Sustainable Luxury collection, which was created in collaboration with Eco-Age, an environmental organization by Livia Firth. “Simply wearing jewelry is a luxury,” Moore told Vogue Italia. “But knowing that the stones and the gold have been ethically sourced and mined makes the experience truly valuable.”
Photo: Foc Kan/FilmMagic.
Anne Hathaway
For the press tour of her film, Colossal, in 2017, Hathaway vowed to only wear sustainable looks. The actor kicked off her eco-friendly tour with a vintage Armani Privé from the brand’s 2006 collection. Hathaway, who worked with celebrity stylist Penny Lovell for her eco-chic wardrobe, also wore a $20 dress purchased from the Rose Bowl Flea Market.
Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images.
Sophie Turner
Turner won over our hearts when she wore a sustainable dress to the 2016 Oscars. As a part of the Red Carpet Green Dress challenge, the Game of Thrones star wore a gray Galvan dress made of organic silk, which she styled with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, Christian Louboutin shoes and her signature red hair.
Photo: Todd Williamson/Getty Images.
Zoey Deutch
Deutch turned heads at the 2018 Oscars when she wore a vintage Elie Saab dress with silver silk threads, sequins and vintage beads. The look was one of several dresses from that year to be a part of the Red Carpet Green Dress challenge.
_________________________
¹Dō-jitsu, yoru [同日、夜].
This chakai was held in the evening of the first day of the Fourth Month of Tenshō 15 [天正十五年] -- May 8, 1587 in the Gregorian calendar.
²Nijō shiki [二疊敷].
This was the two-mat room in Rikyū's official residence within Hideyoshi's complex in Ōsaka.
Notice that the furo is placed above the part of the mat where the mukō-ro was cut in winter: the furo must never be placed under the tsuri-dana.
³Terumoto hitori [輝元 一人].
This was Mōri Terumoto [毛利輝元; 1553 ~ 1625], daimyō-nobleman (as gon-chūnaigon [権中納言], supernumerary middle-counselor, he eventually rose to the Third Rank), and a member of Hideyoshi’s Council of the Five Great Elders [go-tairō [五大老]). At the time of this chakai, however, he was still rather young -- though he was well on his way to becoming one of Hideyoshi’s most trusted vassals.
Terumoto seems to have also been one of Rikyū's personal tea friends (his name is one of the most frequently found in the guest lists of Rikyū's surviving kaiki); and (since he was frequently received alone), it appears that he was an intimate friend, and a disciple as well.
⁴Sho [初].
The shoza.
This was a fairly standard sort of chakai*: with respect to the kane-wari:
- the tokonoma contained a painting as the kakemono, with a te-shoku [手燭] (a long-handled candlestick)† resting on the floor between the painting and the toko-bashira, and so was chō [調];
- the room had the ko-ita furo [小板風爐]‡, making it han [半];
- and the tana held the kōgō and habōki, with the habōki and kōgō each contacting different kane, making the tana chō [調].
Chō + han + chō is han. This is appropriate for the shoza of a chakai held after dark**. __________ *Which is precisely the sort of gathering that a teacher would stage for the edification of one of his students.
†Notice that the handle of the te-shoku extends on a diagonal toward the right.
‡This expression means a large furo arranged on a ko-ita (a shiki-ita that measures 9-sun 5-bu square).
**The night becomes increasingly yin as it deepens. Thus, the shoza is -- relatively speaking -- “more yang” than the goza.
⁵Mokuan [牧庵].
Rikyū has mistaken the first kanji of this artist's name. This refers to the Japanese monk-artist Mokuan Rei-en [黙庵霊淵; ? ~ c 1345*]. He was tonsured as a monk in Kamakura (his biographies do not identify the temple) sometime before 1323, and traveled to China in 1327. He became a renowned Zen painter, working in the sui-boku [水墨] medium†, and a number of his paintings bear colophons by some of the eminent Chinese Chán monks of the day‡. A number of these were brought back to Japan by other travelers, where they were especially treasured. Mokuan died in China around 1345.
In the Kun-dai Kan Sa-u Chō-ki [君臺観左右帳記], the dōbō Nōami [能阿彌; 1397 ~ 1471] considers Mokuan to be a Chinese (Yuan period) painter**. __________ *He was active (albeit in China) during the period that corresponds to the late Kamakura and early Muromachi periods in Japan, so there is necessarily a degree of ambiguity surrounding his personal details. Some Japanese sources claim that he died around 1345 (in China), but this is based on the fact that it was around that time that his name disappears from contemporary records.
†Sui-boku [水墨] are black-ink sketches that are “colored” using gray-ink washes.
‡The significance of these colophons has been a subject of debate in Japan. Some argue that they show approval and acceptance of Mokuan as a fully-recognized monk and artist (in the Chinese tradition), while others suggest that these jottings imply ownership (the Chinese monk, taking pleasure in the painting, wrote some words on it for his own amusement); or even that, having received the original paintings from Mokuan, visiting Japanese monks later asked other Chinese monks to write some words on them to commemorate their meeting (this suggests the possibility that there was no real connection between Mokuan and the Chinese monks who added the colophon at all).
**Suggesting that, in Nōami's view, saying that Mokuan was a Japanese artist would amount to something akin to cultural appropriation.
That said, the arrival of Mokuan's paintings in Japan was one of the great forces behind the development of the Zen style of painting in Japan.
⁶Ji-ga ji-san Kanzan Jittoku [自畫自讃 寒山拾得].
Ji-ga ji-san [自畫自讃] means that both the painting (ga [畫]) and the colophon (san [讃]) were done by Mokuan himself*.
This is the painting usually known as Shì-shuì tú [四睡圖] (in Japanese, Shi-sui zu: “Picture of the Four Sleepers†”), shown below.
As the three monks and their tiger (who represents their Chán energy) are sleeping out of doors, the picture suggests both intimacy, confident repose, and the warming season. This chakai was held during the evening of the first day of summer.
Hánshān [寒山], Shí-dé [拾得], and Fēng-gān [豐干] were all renowned Tang period monk-poets, who were often referred to as the Tiāntái sān-shèng [天臺三聖] -- the three [poetic] sages of Tiāntái (Mountain)‡.
Rikyū marked this entry with a red spot, indicating that the painting was the featured utensil during the shoza. Perhaps his intention was to show his comfortable affection for Terumoto. __________ *This is one of the few paintings by Mokuan that bear his own colophon. Many of his other compositions have colophons written afterward by several of the important Chinese Chán monks who were his contemporaries.
†The four are Hánshān [寒山], Shí-dé [拾得], Fēng-gān [豐干], and his tiger.
‡The three are also known as the Guó-qīng sān-yǐn [國淸三隱], the three recluses of Guó-qīng [temple].
⁷Kake-tōdai [カケ燈臺].
A hanging support for an oil-lamp, primarily used (for the main source of illumination) in the small room*.
During the shoza, the kake-todai was suspended on the pillar near the far end of the utensil mat -- where its primary purpose was to throw light into the interior of the furo, to aid the host’s arrangement of the charcoal.
It was moved to the toko-bashira during the naka-dachi, and remained hanging there throughout the goza, providing illumination both to the room and to the interior of the tokonoma. ___________ *Since ancient times, a kake-tōdai had traditionally been hung on the toko-bashira (even in large rooms), to provide light for viewing the scroll (specifically, the signature and seals of the artist, which were always supposed to be closest to the toko-bashira).
However, in the small room, it replaces the tankei or free-standing tōdai (because of the lack of floor-space on which these kinds of lamp stands could be set up), and this is the purpose for which Rikyū mentions it here.
⁸Tana ni kōgō suzume ・ habōki [棚ニ香合 スヽメ ・ 羽帚].
The kōgō and go-sun-hane were arranged so that each of them would contact a different kane, as shown below.
⁹Furo ・ kama asa dōzen [風爐・釜 朝同前].
In other words, this was the same furo and kama that had been used at the morning's chakai:
◦ the large iron kimen-buro that had belonged to Ashikaga Yoshimasa (and, later, was owned by Oda Nobunaga);
◦ and the (first) small unryū-gama, with a beaten copper lid and kimen kan-tsuki.
¹⁰Shiru tsuru [汁 鶴].
This was a clear soup made by boiling the flesh and bones of a wild crane (probably provided to Rikyū by Hideyoshi's hawkers), together with pieces of daikon.
Some of the meat would have been mashed into a paste and formed into balls that were cooked (in the broth) as dango [團子] (meatballs). These, along with pieces of daikon and chopped leeks (and perhaps other seasonal vegetables), were served in the soup.
¹¹Namasu [ナマス].
Namasu [膾] is a sort of raw salad, made from julienned daikon and carrot, dressed with a mixture of rice vinegar, sake, mirin, and soy sauce.
¹²Kuro-me [黒メ].
Kuro-me [黒布] is a type of seaweed, typically served raw, with a dressing composed of rice vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, salt, and ginger juice.
The general lightness of the kaiseki suggests that Terumoto had already taken the evening meal with Hideyoshi (whom he doubtless had met immediately after arriving from the west country -- probably he had traveled to Sakai by ship in the company of Kobayakawa Takakage [小早川隆景] and Yoshikawa Kurando [吉川蔵人], Rikyū's guests at the morning's chakai; though Terumoto had probably gone on immediately to Ōsaka, while Rikyū kept his traveling companions occupied until Hideyoshi was ready to receive them later in the day). __________ *Though he had become a vassal of Hideyoshi only several years before, Mōri Terumoto would prove to be one of the important players in Hideyoshi's upcoming campaign to subjugate Kyūshū.
¹³Okoshi-mai ・ kawa-take [ヲコシ米 ・ 川茸].
The kashi.
Okoshi-mai are made from parched rice (and sometimes other parched grains as well) mixed with honey, and either formed into “hito-kuchi” [一口] sized balls*, or pressed into a sheet and then cut into squares. While okoshi-mai can be prepared at home, it was more common to procure it from a specialty shop. Since it was a common gift to bring when visiting someone, perhaps Mōri Terumoto had purchased a box of fancy okoshi-mai to give to Rikyū when he came to visit, and Rikyū decided to serve some as one of the kashi.
Kawa-take [川茸] is a kind of fresh-water seaweed. While available anytime the streams where it grows are not frozen, it was usually served only in the early winter or early spring, when the danger of enteric infections caused by raw sewage seeping into the watercourses was at a minimum. Perhaps Rikyū had a special source of this seaweed that guaranteed its cleanliness; or possibly this entry was a miscopying for shiitake [椎茸], lightly salted mushrooms grilled over charcoal, which was one of Rikyū's preferred kashi. ___________ *Hito-kuchi [一口] means “one bite” or “bite-sized” -- one kashi of this size can be placed in the mouth without having to bite it in half. (The Japanese and Koreans dislike watching someone put something to their mouth, bite off part, and then lower the rest away from the mouth.)
¹⁴Go [後].
The goza.
As for the kane-wari:
- the tokonoma had the chabana, arranged in a large basket that was standing on the floor of the tokonoma, and so was han [半]*;
- the room held the ko-ita furo, along with the mizusashi placed to its left (partly below the tana), with bon-chaire arranged in front of it, and so was chō [調];
- and the tana had the hishaku and futaoki, with the hishaku placed diagonally and the futaoki in front of it (and toward the left), and so was han [半].
Han + chō + han is chō, which is proper for the goza of a gathering held at night. ___________ *The te-shoku [手燭] would have been removed before the chabana was arranged in the toko, since the kake-tōdai, hanging on the toko-bashira, would provide a more natural illumination for the chabana (this is also why the basket would have been placed on the floor -- so that the light would fall on the flowers from a more natural direction).
¹⁵Ōkago ni unohana [大籠ニ 卯花].
Probably Rikyū's ahiru-kago*, which was his largest kago-hanaire.
Since it was night, and the kake-todai would have now been hung on the toko-bashira, the basked was placed on the floor of the toko so the light would illuminate the chabana from above.
While flowers were usually not arranged at night, the present chakai presents an exception: as mentioned in the previous post, branches of unohana [卯の花] were traditionally hung in every possible place on this, the first day of the summer season, and left in place until the end of the day. It was in deference to this ancient precedent that Rikyū displayed the unohana as his chabana on this occasion. __________ *Most of the utensils used during this gathering were the same as the things that Rikyū used in the morning.
¹⁶Tana ni hishaku ・ hikkiri [棚ニ ヒシヤク ・ 引切].
The futaoki was one of Rikyū's take-wa [竹輪].
The hishaku was oriented on a diagonal, with the hikkiri in front of it (and toward the left of center). This way, the futaoki could be picked up with the left hand, and then the hishaku with the right, and both lowered to the mat in one motion.
It also allowed the hishaku and futaoki to be counted together as a single unit for the purpose of kane-wari.
¹⁷Mizusashi Shigaraki [水指 シカラキ].
This was Rikyū's Shigaraki mizusashi.
¹⁸Chaire Shiri-bukura [茶入 尻フクラ].
The Shiri-bukura chaire [尻膨茶入] was one of Rikyū's personal treasures. It was also the first chaire to be used on a small chaire-bon of the sort that became associated with Rikyū’s name and teachings.
Using this chaire showed his affectionate respect for Terumoto, as well as illustrating his teachings to his disciple -- and, to indicate the importance of the bon-chaire, Rikyū marked the entry with a red spot.
Though the tray is not mentioned, Rikyū probably used it together with its tray, again out of respect for his guest.
Unlike during the morning's gathering, the chawan was not arranged next to the chaire -- because the Shima-suji-kuro [嶋筋黒] chawan that he used during this chakai was too large to be placed beside the bon-chaire (while still adhering to the appropriate kane relationships).
Though not mentioned, Rikyū would have used an ori-tame [折撓], of his own making, as the chashaku.
The chashaku would have been made to match the bon-chaire (that is, when the bend in the bowl -- the point at which the chaire touched the face of the tray -- was aligned with the back side of the chaire, the handle would extend 4-bu beyond the front rim of the tray).
¹⁹Su [ス].
The things that follow were brought out from the katte at the beginning of the koicha-temae.
²⁰Chawan Kuro-suji [茶碗 黒筋].
This was probably the chawan that Rikyū previously referred to as the “Shima-suji-kuro” [嶋筋黒]* in this kaiki.
This chawan (which closely resembled the bowl shown above†) seems to have been another of Furuta Sōshitsu's hiki-dashi-kuro [引き出し黒] bowls. __________ *This corruption of the name is consistent with other lapses that are found in this kaiki -- suggesting either that Rikyū was in a hurry, or perhaps that (after hosting two chakai in the same day) he was very tired when he finally got around to recording the details in his diary.
This chawan is also known as the “Tenshō-kuro” [天正黒]; and it was, at the time of this chakai, in Hideyoshi’s personal collection (apparently having been presented to Hideyoshi directly by Oribe). In other words, Rikyū had borrowed the chawan from Hideyoshi for use during this chakai.
†The chawan shown in the photo (which closely resembles all of the contemporary, and later, descriptions of the Shima-suji-kuro bowl) seems to have been made at the same time as the Shima-suji-kuro bowl (of which no photos are known to have been made).
The Shima-suji-kuro chawan itself has not been seen since the Meiji period, when it was taken into a private collection. It is not known if the bowl is still in existence.
²¹Monsasu-koboshi [モンサス コホシ].
This was a Namban [南蠻] piece*, that seems to have been presented to Rikyū by Shimai Sōshitsu [嶋井宗叱; 1539 ~ 1615], one of the major merchant-traders based in Hakata.
__________ *Usually said to have been from Southeast Asia, low-fired, unglazed ware of this sort was also being fired on the Korean peninsula, in rough open-pit-kilns, at this time.
And let’s wrap things up! This may not have been the biggest survey ever, but it had perhaps the widest participation ever, and I’m very proud to showcase so many people from so many levels of the comcis industry from creators to retailers to journalists to publishers. 2018 has already been wild but it’s going to be another banner year for comics.
To read the first four parts of this survey go here.
J.T. Yost, publisher Birdcage Bottom Books
2018 Projects: We’re gearing up for a Kickstarter campaign in January to fund all of the stupendous comics we’ve got planned through 2018. We’re focusing on artists flying under the radar that we feel are deserving of a wider audience.
We will be publishing:
“In The Future, We Are Dead”, a graphic novel by Eva Müllerthat focuses on her obsession with death
“The Complete Matinee Junkie”by Jordan Jeffries, a book collecting his previous four years of matinee attending comics diaries along with the current year (in progress) along with lots of bonus material
“Goat Song”, a bizarre piece of fiction about an unexpected infection by Larkin Ford
“Thonger Dongers” by T. Yost, a third collection of short comics drawn for various anthologies
“Nate The Nonconformist Has A Rival!” details high school rivalry at its worst and most immature by Stephanie Mannheim
“A Lone Dear At The End Of The World” by Bradford Gambles alternates between the hush of an abandoned mall reclaimed by nature and loud, crass consumerism
“Pictures of Bananas and Funny Bugs”collects more truly unique work by New Yorker cartoonist Sara Lautman
What was the biggest story in comics in 2017? For me, the biggest story was the depressing realization that the #metoo movement extended to what I’d previously considered a welcoming and non-threatening comics community. What will be the biggest story in comics in 2018? In an echo of editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast’s takedown of Boss Tweed, comics will be the undoing of Trump and his entire administration (a man can dream).
Guilty Pleasure: I don’t feel guilty about my pleasures (I’ll readily admit to my love of Degrassi Jr. High), so I’ll just say the comics related project I’m most looking forward to is the collection of Laura Park’s work.
Who or what inspires you? Josh Bayer is an inspiration in that his need to draw seems compulsory, his knowledge of comics history is extensive, and his ability to share through teaching is admirable.
Sue, journalist, DC Women Kicking Ass
2018 Projects: 2018 mid-terms
What was the biggest story in comics in 2017? A tie! The meltdown of Marvel – sales wise, creative wise (bye Bendis), executive-wise ( Bye Axel, hello Akira Yoshida (oh sorry CB Cebulski) and the #metwo movement hitting comics and Eddie Berganza finally getting what he deserved 5 years ago.
Guilty Pleasure: Infinity War – how can Marvel get their movies (mostly) so good and their comics struggle.
Who or what inspires you? Wonder Woman! The comic is suffering from a writer who shouldn’t be writing it, but it was great under Rucka/Scott/Sharpe (also the movie was great).
Martha Thomases, writer
2018 Projects: Second Hand Rose, with Richard Case.
What was the biggest story of 2017? #MeToo, Eddie Berganza
What will be the biggest story of 2018? #MeToo spreads to include the people who covered for Eddie and others.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Black Panther! Also, being seen as a writer more than a journalist.
Who or what inspires you? Irmina, by Barbara Yelin. I’m not prepared to see it’s the best book, but it provoked me to think of history in new ways.
Charles Vess, cartoonist
2018 Projects: For the past four years I’ve been illustrating the first ever collected edition of Ursula K. Le Guin’s six multiple award winning Earthsea novels with direct consultation from the writer. ‘The Books of Earthsea’ from Saga Press (a division of Simon & Schuster) will be published in October of 2018, the 50th anniversary of the publication of ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’, the first book in the series. The collection will feature some 60 color and black and white illustrations that will depict her world, its characters and her dragons as close to the way Ursula has always seen them as possible. What a journey it’s been!
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Reading as much of Luke Pearson’s Hildafolk and Anti Watson’ Glister as they’ll give me.
Who or what inspires you? Mike Mignola, Michael Wm. Kaluta and Jill Thompson
Mairghread Scott, writer
2018 Projects: I have two new graphic novels coming out from First Second in March and April. City on the Other Side with artist Robin Robinson, a YA fantasy adventure that follows a young girl trying to stop a war between the after, and Science Comics: Robots and Drones with Jacob Chabot, a look at the history of robots and Drones and how they work. I also have written an animated feature called Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors featuring, Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Patriot, America Chavez, Inferno and Captain Marvel that I am really excited to share with everyone.
What was the biggest story of 2017? The women who came forward about Eddie Berganza and that DC finally did something about it.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Probably all the other companies being forced to clean house of their Berganza and the female talent that will finally start feeling safe to pitch at those comic companies.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Watching Great British BakeOff and eating cake.
Who or what inspires you? Alex De Campi, that woman is just so damn fearless.
Larry Marder, cartoonist
2018 Projects: Beanworld Omnibus :summer 2018. Beanworld Book Five: 2019.
What was the biggest story of 2017? Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Some sort of inevitable crash.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: B-movies on TCM.
Who or what inspires you? Jack Kirby. It’s always Kirby.
Henry Barajas, writer
2018 Projects: I’m working LA VOZ DE MAYO with Jason Gonzalez and contributing to JH Williams’ III anthology WHERE WE LIVE.
What was the biggest story of 2017? Men harassing women in comics. The comic book industry has had to deal with some persons that overstayed his welcome after numerous allegations. It’s interesting how the events and victims became whispers and shy “con-versations” until Buzzfeed took it public. It doesn’t stop with that one. When you find one roach, you probably haven’t seen them all. Thankfully, women have been speaking out and exposing the bad eggs.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Betty and Veronica will get married.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Line Webtoons. I love their drive. They’re hungry and taking chances.
Who or what inspires you? David and Maria Lapham. They’re making the best noir comic that everyone should be talking about.
Christian Beranek, writer
2018 Projects: Kelci Crawford and I will be launching the Tiny Unicorn ongoing webcomic and prepping a YA GN series. In addition, Tony DiGerolamo and I have some new stuff in the works at The Webcomic Factory.
What was the biggest story of 2017? The #MeToo movement and the diversity in comics debate leading to editorial shake-ups at the highest levels.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Re-invention.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: It’s been 15 years since I’ve played a video game. Maybe I should give one a go!
Who or what inspires you? Kelci Crawford, my partner on Validation, continues to get better and better with her work, which in turns makes me better.
Kat Kan, librarian
2018 Projects: In addition to my work as a school librarian and as the Graphic Novel Specialist for Brodart Books & Library Services, I write the Graphically Speaking column for Voice of Youth Advocates. The February 2018 column will mark my 24th anniversary of writing about graphic novels and comicbooks for libraries serving teens.
What was the biggest story of 2017? The failure of the Big 2 to truly invest in diverse characters and comics; many series were cancelled in late 2017, usually citing low sales. The publishers have ignored the fact that the target audience tends to buy trades, and that libraries constitute one of the important markets for such books.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? The Excellence in Graphic Literature Award is a new initiative of the Pop Culture Classroom – the awards for various age levels and an overall award will be given at the Denver Comic Con. Among the awards is the Mosaic Award, which will celebrate diversity in comics. I’m on the Advisory Board; the EGLs are juried awards. Also, indie publishers such as Lion Forge will continue to grow. Lion Forge has learned lots of lessons from the past, mostly due to its staff – most of whom have worked in the comics industry for years.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Possible travel to professional conferences, particularly the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans. Also, helping my middle school Library Book Club students create their own STEAM-based comics characters and stories during the second semester.
Who or what inspires you? Jim McClain – I mentioned him last year as well, I think. Despite many personal and professional challenges, he continues to hone his craft in his “spare” time. He ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for SOLUTION SQUAD – a superhero comicbook that makes learning math FUN! Jim continues to work on creating marvelous lesson plans – including the STEAM-based comics characters project I plan to use with my students. He does all this while teaching math full-time and being one of the best people I know.
Peter Kuper, cartoonist
2018 Projects: Kafkaesque a collection of 14 adaptations of Franz Kafka short stories, including ‘In The Penal Colony’, ‘The Burrow’ and ‘Before The Law’ to be published by W.W. Norton , Fall 2018
What was the biggest story of 2017? English edition of Alack Sinner: the Age of Innocence by José Antonio Muñoz and Carlos Sampayo
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Emil Ferris My Favorite Thing Is Monsters 2 (Vol. 2)
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Binge watching
Who or what inspires you? Jose Muñoz
Kyle Pinion, journalist
What was the biggest story of 2017? Marvel’s no good, horrible, very bad year. It’s been a long time since I can remember a comics publisher flailing this badly over the course of 12 months – be it creatively, in terms of overall leadership, the PR gaffes, you name it, Marvel somehow found a way to screw it up. Their ongoing rudderless nature is something everyone in the industry should probably be worried about. The original Marvel Now!, with all its energy and critical acclaim, feels like it was a decade ago.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? To be honest, see above. Can the Cebulski era of Marvel right the ship? What can be done differently? Unlike DC, Marvel still hasn’t bothered to make amends with the retailers, whose trust they’re blowing to smithereens, and if they were to relaunch/reboot, what shape will that take exactly? The Legacy launch was a complete bust; so what’s the next step? Do they have the talent in place to get readers excited for whatever it is? Will the long dormant Fantastic Four finally re-emerge thanks the Disney-Fox deal?
A second story worth keeping an eye on is just how big Brian Michael Bendis’ presence will be at DC. I’m sure he’ll wind up with a number of big name titles, but what of Jinxworld? Could that potentially be another pop-up imprint at the publisher? And perhaps even more pressingly, will he join Geoff Johns on the movie/tv side of things in some advisory capacity?
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: The return of the Legion of Super-Heroes. In whatever form it takes. It HAS. TO. HAPPEN….(I hope). It’s not even a guilty pleasure, I just wanted to mention it somewhere in here.
Todd Allen, analyst
What was the biggest story of 2017? What did Marvel go and do this time? (Seems like every other week there was a problem.)
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Depends on whether the whispers of mass shop closing are well founded or not. If so, that could be it. Other obvious possibility is whatever Marvel does for a relaunch/reboot.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: Akira Yoshida returning to write Milli Vanilli comics.
Lara Antal, cartoonist
2018 Projects: Two graphic novels – Adult Memoir about Parenting and Loss, written by Rick Louis (see except below)
Middle Grade about an all-girl punk band and their ghost guitarist
What was the biggest story of 2017? Middle Grade graphic novel market is booming.
What will be the biggest story of 2018? Graphic novels are up – mini comics are down.
Guilty Pleasure of 2018: More magical middle grade graphic novels! These are the comics I dreamed of as a kid and I’m glad they finally exist.
Who or what inspires you? Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier — I’m sure I’m not the only one going to mention Telgemeier but I really appreciated the simplicity and solid storytelling. It’s not going to change your life, but it’s very GOOD, and that’s a feat in itself. I find in comics especially the basics of good story telling can easily be obscured by artwork, and popular characters/properties, and popular creators.
The Beat’s Annual Creator Survey, 2018 Edition, Part Five: chock full of preview art And let's wrap things up! This may not have been the biggest survey ever, but it had perhaps the widest participation ever, and I'm very proud to showcase so many people from so many levels of the comcis industry from creators to retailers to journalists to publishers.
