21. when do you think they were at their happiest?

first of all: oof, my heart. i think it's a toss up between the halcyon five minutes before things went sour with rory in stars hollow and when he first found his footing at truncheon. that said, even though i tend to ignore ayitl, i think jess is... not his happiest, but definitely content to wait

29. how do you think they would be as a parent? (and if they are a parent, how do you think they would be if they weren’t?)

oh that boy would be such a good dad— not perfect, but just so, so determined to make sure any kid knows just how much they're loved and wanted, so careful to make sure his problems didn't bleed onto them or burden them the way liz's everything colored his childhood, and god, he would just be so fucking smitten

and in any universe where he has a daughter, you just know he's gonna sweep the girldad of the year awards

Rory attempts a stern expression, but her mouth is twisting to hide a smile. “Fine,” she says, pushing her can of coke towards him. “But hold this, will you? The condensation makes my hands all clammy.”

Jess accepts the drink willingly. “Okay, but I can’t promise that I won’t steal a few swigs while you’re schmoozing.”

“Leech,” she declares. Gives him one of those looks where she’s trying her best to be annoyed with him, chastising but also appreciative, and he can’t get enough of it. “Networking now. Wish me luck.”

You can delete this if you want to but another anon mentioned to @rorygilmoregf how many r*gan fans' obsession with Logan can pretty much be traced back to him being rich. And when you think about it, a lot of the complaints they throw at Jess and in turn compliment Logan for are in some way connected to money. Take for example Jess dropping out. Everyone that has little to no understanding on why he had no drive to finish high-school just go on about how they had a hard time in high-school too, but it's no excuse. And they keep acting like Jess was just....fucking around in the middle of school hours as if he wasn't working as a full-time employee at Wallmart, doing a physically taxing job in order to have money for himself bc he knows Luke's support is conditional, and because he likely never got any monetary support or security from Liz. By contrast, Logan got kicked out of multiple private schools for getting into trouble, yet not only finished, but also got into Yale because of his father's money. The same goes for Jess vs Logan's romantic gestures. When Logan supports Rory into getting a permanent felony for larceny, it's romantic and "supportive", but Jess being spontaneous by simply taking Rory out on a ride in her car that ended in a crash on accident means he's dangerous and shouldn't be trusted. Logan knows how to charm someone like Emily bc his family name has already secured him her favor, and at the same time tries to take advantage of that by stealing from her bc he just "likes to play pranks". Jess ends up saying two sarcastic lines to Emily bc he's embarrassed over a black eye, and he's deemed a thug while Logan fans think he's "insane". Even something like the Birkin bag is seen as this incredible feat of Logan's and not simply him flexing his money to Rory for something that she has little interest in. If Logan didn't have the money to make some of his attempts look big and 'significant', chances are he would've come off as desperate as Marty towards Rory.

you’re so fucking right. logan’s wealth masks a lot of his shittiest aspects. take him stealing that trinket from the gilmore house and getting that maid fired—this is apparently something he does at like every house he visits, so how many people have lost their jobs because of his bullshit? but of course it’s okay because it’s logan and he’s rich <3 him getting rory that ugly ass birkin bag is further evidence that he knows like, next to nothing about who she really is. we learned very early on in the show (rory’s birthday parties) that rory prefers gifts that are heartfelt and significant and simple, not thousand dollar purses bought on a whim just because. the way he flaunts his wealth honestly makes me feel so disgusted as an audience member. imo the only people who ship rogan are people who want to be in rory’s shoes/think logan is attractive, not people who actually think they’re a good couple (because they’re not, they really kind of suck together actually).

Gilmore Girls fic recs aplenty

OK, so in answer to an ask from edwardsparklehands and an anon, here’s some rambling recs for GG/literati fic! Tagged users both here (if I can find you) and in AO3, hope that’s OK, kids.

This is absolutely not an exhaustive list – I can be picky af and these are just fics or series that have really stuck with me. And they're not in any order. There’s also tons on my bookmarks list on AO3, but figured I should just try and keep this short. Which it is not.

Anyway, there’s tons of excellent stuff out there, all depending on what you’re looking for. I’ll try and give you finished works too, but there are LOADS of wips that I follow and haven’t mentioned that are worth checking out. Also want to preface this with a caveat – I have no idea what your preference is re warnings or ratings, so always go by what the author has rated/tagged.

The Harvest Moon series by @mrsmess/MrsMess is divine. The eponymous fic is seriously one of my all time favourite literati fics. Rory is dealing with the grief of losing Richard and goes to Luke’s fishing cabin for some time to herself and Jess is there fixing it up. It is just so breathtakingly beautiful, the way grief is explored and how Rory comes to terms with what’s always been there with Jess. Aw man, MrsMess has loads of excellent fic, actually. Bluegirls Come in Every Size, Startstuck (Groundhog Day inspired genius), A Form of Attraction (bodyswap, bitches) far too many to list, so go choose!

Wild Geese by @rudeflower/therudestflower. Oh man, this one. Jess-centric with only the barest hint of Rory – like, minimal, so fyi in case you’re looking for hardcore literati. Truncheon folds and Jess has to move back to Stars Hollow to get his shit together. Delves into his and Liz’s relationship and boy does it go hard. There’s a couple more works in the series that are perfect follow-ups too.

You can’t go wrong with anything by @rorygilmoregf/peterstank. I got sucked in by the weight we carry and it absolutely broke me, but in such a good way. Follows the show from Jess’s POV mostly, but gives him back story and fills his character out so well. Eventually has Rory POV and there’s plenty of literati goodness. Distilla truant is an AU of Jess in Chilton and it is so goooooood. Also, there’s a series called wrapped up in books and it’s an au/fix-it from the Real Paul Anka episode and it is just so wonderful. As is the new lux et veritas where Rory meets Jess in Yale. Just, yeah, go read.

Desdemona's Handkerchief by @stellaluna33/Stellaluna33 is like a lost scene from Teach me Tonight. Just seeing these two knuckleheads being adorbs and lovely and dancing around each other is so sweet – something I would’ve loved to have seen more of on the show. Stellaluna also wrote the gorgeous wip The Long and Winding Road, which I love – it’s on fanfiction.net and ye gads I don’t like the that site’s interface so I flap about like an old lady and get very confused so apologies to Stellaluna for not commenting on it but I LOVE IT and wait with baited breath for more!!

Ah man, pretty much anything by @missgoalie75/missgoalie75, another fandom heavy-hitter imho. To Move With Purpose, the Sense8 AU (LOVE THIS), Get Out of This Place While We Still Have Time, this is all addition by subtraction – all excellent literati. I’m gonna let a cat amongst the pigeons and say Weather Me is one of my favourite GG fics, but it’s Jess/Paris set post-revival – a pairing I thought I’d never read because I’m a literati diehard, but their writing is just so good that I had to read and I was not disappointed.

@gingerteaonthetardis/gingerteaandsympathy has two recent GG fics that are just * chef’s kiss * always crashing in the same car reimagines events in Teach Me Tonight if Rory was driving; it’s all one night and yet there is so much character development it’s astonishing. A thing in itself is an alternate ending to s4e12, A Family Matters, where Jess goes back to Stars Hollow to pick his car up. What if Rory and Jess actually talked things out? I would very much say this.

Truth, Fiction, and Rose-Colored Glasses by @hawthornewhisperer/HawthorneWhisperer figure things out post-revival. This is so soft and lovely and just, yeah. Love it.

It’s a Mixed Up, Muddled Up, Shook Up World (Except for Lola) by @this-is-not-my-dream-blog/cyrene. Post-revival, Jess is just there for Rory and the baby, being all protective and pining and adorable and shit. Yes please.

Eurydice Backwards by @notthereneveraround/notthereneveraround. I adore this conceit; exquisite storytelling.

To You, From Me by 70sBabe – notes Rory and Jess have left for each other. Tracks their relationship through the show and them diverges – love it. 70sBabe has LOADS of excellent fic – I loved this must be the place (flatshare au) and call it what you want (canon divergence, set around 2013, they go on a roadtrip – ugh, the feels).

The Subsect by @truncheonpress/truncheonpress – literally what it says LOL A masterfully meta piece of writing – the author writes as Jess writing his book which is about his life. So densely packed full of detail and references that, like, an embarrassing amount of it is lost on me, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the writing. It’s incredible. And it’s a wip btw.

ETA: dammit, missed gave me the blues by madwoman14! Rory, Dean, Logan and Jess as colours and how they interact. So gorgeous.

OMG ETA AGAIN: how in the name of Mariano did I forget @jenlindleygf/pambeesly's gorgeous fic that absolutely devastated me, you could call me babe for the weekend! Jess and Rory start up a no-strings attached relationship while in Stars Hollow for the holidays and my god is it good. MY GOD IS IT GOOOOOOOOD. But also part of a larger series and I am (not so) patiently waiting for more coz ❤️❤️❤️

And, come on, I would be remiss if I didn’t stick my fics in here too. Because I crave love and attention and I’m actually really happy about them LOL Not Time’s Fool is my attempt to fill in the gaps of AYITL, with a little pre-revival chapter thrown in there too. The sexy times in chapters 1 and 2 is very much explicit, so be warned. But there’s loads of fluff and angst and love and banter and stuff too so, ya know. Letters to a Lost Love is post-AYITL by a few years; just a little domestic fluff scene where Rory talks to Jess about a Truncheon book she loves, and Jess has a confession. And the immediately post-AYITL Ride’em high, kids is shameless, gratuitous, lascivious ogling Jess in shorts because yeah.

I am absolutely loving the Writers - the honesty and rawness between Jess and Rory is so beautiful! It’s becoming one of my favourite fics in the fandom already.

Can I ask if you have any favourites of your own?

I'm so glad you like it! I can't wait to write the next chapter, which has the scenes I've been most excited to write.

I'm very new to literati fanfic and I haven't read a ton, but below are some recs of fics I've enjoyed. There's some really great writers in this fandom, which I suppose makes sense as it's called Literati.

@missgoalie75 writing is great. My favorites that I've read are While We're Tidal where Jess goes to prom with Rory and kind of fixes things at the end of Season 3, and To Move with Purpose where Rory runs off with Jess at the end of Season 4.

I also really enjoy @rorygilmoregf distilla truant, which is a Jess goes to Chilton AU and the current lux et veritas au where Jess goes to Yale.

And @gingerteaonthetardis always crashing in the same car is a wonderful Teach Me Tonight AU with spot on Rory and Jess S2 characterizations.

the actual average is hard to calculate because i veer between extremes like it's my goddamn job. some days i crank out 10k and other days i write nothing.

What kinds of gifts do you think jess gets rory for her bday/christmas etc? and vice versa? i can never think of an answer to this besides books lmao

omg okay I think that books are definitely a given (maybe he’s found a signed version of one of her favorites, or an uncorrected proof, because she loves those) but other than that… he’s never getting her a bracelet, not after the whole dean debacle, but he might get her some charms for the one she got from her grandfather for her 24th birthday, a little pen or something cute like that. sometimes he’ll get her CDs or records, even if those are sort of absolute now, but if he sees an XTC album that’s signed, he’ll get that for her, no question. maybe a nice necklace that she’s pointed out before — something simple and elegant, she’s not about flashy or showing off. good concert tickets, close to the stage, maybe reunion tours for bands that he knows she would kill to see. a fancy expensive bookmark would be right up her alley. one year he builds her a bookshelf, which she actually cries over, although that’s the year she’s pregnant so really, it doesn’t take much to make her cry, but still.

I feel like she’d get some of the same stuff for him, like concert tickets. in a universe where they’re together in 2015 she gets tickets for the grateful dead fare thee well tour, even though she can’t stand their stuff for the most part. signed records, too. uses her connections sometimes to get him copies of books before they’re out, devil wears prada style, like a new david sedaris book (she’s met him personally). vintage band t-shirts, ones from bruce springsteen tours or metallica. he’s a lot harder to get gifts for and honestly doesn’t want that much to begin with, so books are always a fail safe, but he’s also pretty happy when she just rents them a movie and orders his favorite takeout (and wears things later that night that he finds very attractive but that’s their own private business 😈).

Here’s...everything I’ve written so far for the first of the 3 prompts I got on Sunday. And it’s set in the MYatRT universe. 

She doesn’t know what to expect.

When they were teenagers, well, Jess wasn’t big on dates. Date night usually meant falling asleep in front of Almost Famous after too much take out. Or falling asleep in front of Twin Peaks after too much take out. Or, on particularly good date nights, not falling asleep in front of anything. Those were the nights she made her way home in the cold with her lips chapped raw and her whole body humming. 

She treasures those memories, of course, but they’re not fumbling teenagers anymore. They’ve been kind of, sort of, a little bit seeing each other for a few weeks now, squeezing in coffee and bookstore trips and a few tentative kisses around his busy book tour schedule, but now the tour is done, and when Jess called her yesterday he told her he wanted to take her on a date, he even used the word, and she has absolutely no clue what occasion to dress for.

the magnificent @kelkat9 tagged me to share the last thing i wrote and uhhhh................... this will probably never be anything or go anywhere, but i very much am mucking around in a word doc about tom and sybil and the day of the election—yes, i know, i said i wasn't doing this, but friends... i lied.

"I wish—" she halts, "—I wish I could make you all understand that Branson is not the cause, but the effect. He has not made me political, Edith. He could no more be responsible for my interest in suffrage than I could be the reason the sky is blue." 

Edith's face is doubtful, but she does not interrupt.

"He's encouraged me, yes, but he hasn't changed me. In fact," she adds wryly, "Branson and I spend most of our discussions disagreeing about things. But that's what I like about him—he isn't afraid to argue with me, to disagree with me like he would any other rational, thinking person."

Of all possible reasons for a friendship, she suspects Edith will understand this one the least, met as she is at every turn by Mary's outspoken contrariness. She actually shakes her head in bewilderment as Sybil continues, "He really is a very good friend, Edie, whatever you or father or anyone else wants to think."

Though it isn't really her intention, her sister softens a little at the childhood nickname. This, the contradiction of Edith—of wanting to be trusted, to be loved, and yet of wanting to protect herself from all who might break her trust or refuse to love her—has often felt like an impassable rift she's made and maintained between herself and her sisters, and Sybil has always mourned it. 

But in this moment, she finds herself glad that it is Edith and not Mary who has found her out, for Mary would think her naïve and scold her like a baby. Edith only thinks she is mad.

"If you are friends, then, it would be better to wait and give your apology during daylight hours," Edith says simply. "If you go now, you'll only be giving the poor man ideas."
