Review: Rory and the Reverie’s newest single ‘Noir (ft. CW Jones)’ nourishes with easy-going jazz tones and a wistful longing to live in the moment
Tumblr media
Australian-based artist Rory and the Reverie has absolutely perfected an easy-going indie sound in his beautifully crafted musical catalogue including previous calming releases ‘herbal tea’ and ‘Boomerang.’ Now collaborating with the UK rapper and poet CW Jones, the pair mould together hip-hop and jazz in newest single ‘Noir’ for a journey you’ll not just be captivated by, but soothed to the core.
Lead in by tantalising, bright piano riffs, ‘Noir’ immediately captures an undeniable groove to its soundscape, bringing some much-needed positive flair that’ll uplift your spirits. Gentle percussion softly keeps a beat with distant intermittent trumpet chiming in at short bursts, wielding a minimal instrumental-scape but one that’s ever-so whimsical and nourishing for the soul. Rory’s vocals soar through the flourishing bed of sound, rich in tone and so sensationally interweaving between ranges from low-toned warmth to angelic highs. The chorus continues the track’s tranquil nature but with a more forward delivery, seeing the occasional drum clash and gorgeous backing vocal for an atmospheric intermission. CW Jones’ keeps ‘Noir’ evolving with his spoken-word second verse, conveying poignant lines with an emphatic confidence you can’t help but be hooked on every word of. Capturing a vintage essence in its production, ‘Noir’ whirs within enriching beats and a colourful auditory palette that can’t help but feel familiar and nostalgic, perhaps leaving you longing for a memory brought out by the cathartic blend of melancholic lulling and comforting reverie.
Penned about the fast-moving nature of life, ‘Noir’ not just asks that you slow down, but gives you three minutes of warm blanketing sound to wrap yourself up within while you do it. Focusing on the little things that bring you joy, its lyricism surrounds the smaller details that often go amiss, taking in the moment rather than being consumed by the vast amount of information and expectations of the world: ‘I haven’t had the feeling of your warmth for so long… all I wanna do is turn that record player loud and dance with you.’ Often entangled within the world’s pacing rather than living in the moment, lines like ‘I was moving the speed of light… slow down eventually’ encourage you to be conscious in your present day, letting go of that to-do-list, those unread emails and your ever-growing schedule to just appreciate the here and now. CW Jones’ adds another layer of narrative to the release, writing about love and heartbreak as well as the progression of life, all wrapped up in just one verses’ worth of introspection: ‘this life is precious, I’m a sensitive soul.’ Reminding that ‘sometimes this life just ain’t a walk in the past, it gets confusing, twisted at times’ , ‘Noir’ is a song that not just wants you to be more aware of your surroundings and appreciating your life, but also one there to comfort and relate to when you don’t get the luxury of time to slow it down. Filled with a narrative that can’t help but be relatable to just about anyone, ‘Noir’ is sure-to-be your relaxing anthem for those times you just need a short burst of serotonin infused into your day.
Check out ‘Noir’ for yourself here to enjoy Rory’s one-of-a-kind dreamy sound and a lyrical message that’s straight from the heart.

Rory And The Reverie - Boomerang (Indie Pop)
Tumblr media

After writing and recording songs exclusively for himself in his bedroom for five years Rory Duffy, performing as Rory and the Reverie, decided it was time for someone else to hear his music.
Growing up in Middlesbrough, Rory first cut his teeth on the North East music circuit as lead singer of math-rock band Toyger, however since their disbandment in 2012 he has pursued a decidedly less raucous and more folk-inspired sound, albeit from behind closed doors. That all changed when in late 2018 Rory recorded his debut self-titled EP and, 6 months later, released it to the world.
Rory and the Reverie marries stripped back acoustic guitar and telecaster twangs with storytelling vocals about family, relationships and the reluctance of becoming an adult.
"This was lovely. One-time Toyger stalwart done good" - Bob Fischer, BBC Introducing.

Review: Rory and The Reverie is back with his latest bedroom-pop hit 'boomerang'
Tumblr media
Growing up in England - and now living in Australia - 29 year old Rory Duffy has had quite the life of experiences making it all the more thrilling to hear snippets of his life within his self-produced music. Setting up as an artist in mid-2020, Rory joined the music scene as moniker Rory and the Reverie; with reverie meaning to be lost within a daydream, it's no surprise that his bedroom pop style is calming all the same.
After sharing his stunning debut single 'Across The Blue' in 2020, he followed up with 'herbal tea' earlier this year, and now closing out 2021 we're met with 'Boomerang.' His success with such few singles can't go amiss, as he continuously catches the attention of the BBC in Introducing segments and a live radio session on BBC Tees.
Latest instalment to his short but ever-so sweet discography, 'Boomerang', immediately warms the soul from the press of play. Fuzzy guitar riffs bring a sense of intimacy and home-like comforts, masterfully paired with synth chopping and delicate shakers - an obscure yet fresh mix that Rory blends together with such ease. An underlying steady drum beat lays low in the background, quiet but much needed to keep the slow, airy pacing for ultimate bedroom lo-fi vibes. With souring vocal harmonies topping off this interwoven patchwork of softness, Rory's heavenly agile vocals are like the embodiment of bottled-sunshine as he meshes smoothness and a gorgeous tone of unfiltered, infectious joy. The overall concoction feels reminiscent of Paolo Nutini's older work but with a breath of fresh air in styling and lyricism that, if anything, is on a whole new level.
'Boomerang' is indisputably light in sound, but it's packed with a narrative that I'm sure many can relate to. As we progress through the 3 minutes, it's more and more clear that this single pens the difficulties of pushing someone away later to realise it was a horrible mistake. Thankfully, Rory is here to keep it breezy, as winning them back is on the cards and makes for an oddly romantic tale in this new track. Expressed through a confused protagonist that can't quite decide what they want, we see lines like 'I think I better jump ship, probably should've dropped this' transform into 'My thoughts are rearranging, and I hope and pray you're still waiting.' Among this cleverly evolving lyricism, there's an added touch in the form of a short voicemail segment intended to represent the woman in this complex situation expressing her slight annoyance. Although the narrative touches upon a topic that may be a little sour for some, Rory does an excellent job at making the whole ordeal feel like a mere drop in the ocean as he whisks us away and makes us forget about all our worries.
Rory explains a little more behind the single, noting that “I wrote this during the last lockdown in Sydney and really wanted it to be a fun daft song you could have a dance to” says Rory. “It’s all about the idiotic stuff you do at the start of a relationship when you’re not sure you’re ready to commit - we’ve all been there”
For the ultimate dancing around your apartment in the rain type experience, check out 'Boomerang' for yourself here, as it certainly brings a whole new level to bedroom pop!

Review: Rory and the Reverie's 'herbal tea' is just as relaxing as it sounds
Tumblr media
Sydney based singer-songwriter Rory Duffy debuted his solo project Rory and the Reverie in 2019 after many childhood years playing guitar, drums and piano. His smooth indie-pop mixes acoustic and electronic elements bringing a fresh sound and format than typically expressed in mellower releases. This previously British artist relocated to Australia in 2018 to truly find himself and his musical direction, and it's clear from his solid releases he managed just that.
Beginning his step into the music scene, Rory's first single 'Old Friend' caught the attention of BBC Introducing as well as embracing being their title of track of the week back in 2019. His next single 'Across the Blue' released last year, followed by third instalment and latest single 'herbal tea' that was recorded, produced and mixed all by Rory alone in his bedroom.
Atmospherically light and breezy, 'herbal tea' is stripped back to tender guitar strums and plucks with a rhythmic beat accompanying it. This simplistic instrumental pairing and slower pace artistically forms an air of mellowness, and a calming ambience that couldn't be more fitting for a track just as warm as the title 'herbal tea' makes you feel. With a slight build in elements as the song progresses, you'll still be taken on a journey without feeling that the sound is underdone. Rory nails the sweet spot between an atmosphere of reverie and a song that still keeps a listener gripped, wanting to hear more. With an indie-pop edge, the track also has occasional bursts of a more lo-fi bedroom/dream pop twangs that make for an easy-listening experience.
Through his time in lockdown, Rory concluded that he prefers a night in over a night out, and thus 'herbal tea' was formed to describe this feeling. With lines like: 'What'd you think of this place, does it fit the brief? Does it close by 10, does it serve you herbal tea?' it's evident from the start that the track embodies the personality of an introvert suited to nights at home in a familiar environment, not without mentioning how youthful nights out have adapted into a preference for staying home. Although penned to be about Rory's personal revelation, 'herbal tea' can also be interpreted as a message on heading further into adulthood and the changes that come with growing into a mature lifestyle. Give this calming tune a listen here, perfect for late nights and chilled playlists.

Rory And The Reverie - Herbal Tea (Bedroom Pop)
Tumblr media
