A hero’s story that had to be told. The book “Am Seil (Roped Together)“ from Erich Hackl is the true story of Reinhold Duschka, who saved the lives of a jewish mother and her child and hid them over years in his factory. Based on the memories of Lucia Heilman, the child, Hackl wrote this appreciation totally not gimmicky. Together with the gaps in Lucia’s memory it gives us a feeling of true honesty. . First there are a lot of names, stories of the origin of the people. Regina, the mother, and the gatherings of her friends talking about communism and othe politics. Then the nazis took over, so a friend of Lucias biological father made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. We read from the time when they were hidden, when the nazis lost the war and what happend afterwards, mostly to the passionate climber Reinhold Duschka. He never boasted. The book is a big portait of that character and so well written, intelligent and unagitated like Duschka himself. A little prosaically but so impressive! Maybe the story is told in such a simple way, because the circumstances are exciting enough. None pressed out emotions are needed. It fits the story perfectly. . I am so thankful for people like Reinhold Duschka, but also for people like Lucia Heilman that want to give a person like him their appreciation. And I am thankful for Erich Hackl who gave her a voice! Especially now, but in every time.
